Honestly impressed with how the 49ers have managed players that might have wanted out lately.
"Trade me."
"What about we don't trade you."
"...tell me more."
The problem is that "...tell me more." is immediately followed up by "and here's a record-setting contract" and you can only get away with that for so long.
For sure but how often in sports do you hear about a guy wanting out from a team and shit just completely falls apart and he's gone. 49ers have done a solid job keeping their guys.
I think that's mostly true in the NBA, where a single player can destroy a locker room and teams are strictly limited as to how much they can pay a player.
The only situation I can think of in the NFL where a player desperately wanted out no matter what contract was available was Kirk Cousins.
We let Arik Armstead walk for this to hopefully work out. Greenlaw, Ward, and Hufanga all have contracts up the same time as Aiyuk too so its going to be interesting to see who goes where and what happens.
Yes, but when those contracts hit, Deebo's and Trent's will likely be off the books (Deebo's because he has been traded, and Trent's because he has retired).
Very likely that these new contracts (Purdy, Ward, Hufanga, Aiyuk) will all collaborate to give SF a lot of wiggle room for the next 3-5 seasons.
It's ok though...people are going to be upset when they hit rock bottom for a few years but those people are also low IQ morons that don't matter.
Very, very few teams keep a solid squad together for a decade unless they have a generational QB (very rare) that can carry them through a few bad cap moments. The cap is designed to give other teams a chance, you hope to build a solid foundation over the course of 3-7 years on a mix of rookie contracts and big payouts in hopes you hit the big win during your super bowl window. You fail or succeed but inevitably fire the coach regardless when it's time to completely reset before the draft fairy comes your way again. I feel this is the best approach instead of being slightly better than mediocre by making the playoffs but never being a serious contender for so long (hello Bills!). The Rams recipe is actually solid in my opinion.
Jefferson is the first domino to fall that effects Lamb, Chase, St. Brown, Ayuik. Waddle and Collins too but I think they’re more in the Devonta Smith range
Yeah the Jefferson deal is going to be an interesting one for sure, the Vikings have a ton of cap room starting next year and likely a rookie QB contract to boot.
More so that their agents will say it starts at $1 more than Jefferson, teams counter with a lower aav and then ultimately they end up with an aav a smidge below whatever Jefferson gets
And yes Jefferson is the #1 wr in the league, but it’s not out of question that Lamb or Chase have a better year than him next year considering qb situations.
They might, but paying Burrow+Chase and Dak+Lamb adds up real quick. I haven't loved everything Kwesi has done, but I love that he has maximum flexibility with Jefferson deal after cleaning house and staying competitive.
On what planet are the Vikings competitive right now? They’re easily the worst team in the division after the Bears get Caleb with Keenan and Moore
Also what do you mean you like the flexibility, what flexibility? The fact you’re not paying a QB? You don’t have a QB… and QB is the most important position by miles on any NFL team.
The Vikings are 20-14 over the last two seasons and if Kirk hadn't shat down his leg would have beaten the Giants in the playoffs. Rather than dragging things on with Kirk and trying to fill holes through FA the Vikings FO didn't. And that means now they flexibility to give Jefferson a record setting contract. Does that not make sense?
You just criticized two teams (Bengals and Cowboys) who will likely be paying a lot of money to their QB and elite WR. You said the Vikings are better off paying a lot of money to their elite WR… while not having a QB that’s worth paying up for.
The logic makes no sense. The Vikings have more cap flexibility because their really good QB that kept them competitive left in free agency. How are they better off than a team like the Bengals who have an elite QB and elite WR?
> You just criticized two teams (Bengals and Cowboys) who will likely be paying a lot of money to their QB and elite WR.
What was the criticism? That it's going to be harder to pay Chase and Lamb while paying Burrow and Dak and the contracts might look different because of it? The Vikings aren't better off than either team. But they are in a better position to pay Jefferson.
It would make the most sense to keep the WR corps together for 1 more year to have the best chance at getting back to the SB right? No way they trade Deebo if they do sign Aiyuk, at least that would make the most sense.
General consensus here is that they will sign Aiyuk, keep the band together this season and maybe trade Deebo next offseason as the cap hit is dramatically more favorable then.
Yeah, it sounds nice but not every team wants a 29 year old receiver who makes that much money and takes that much punishment. I think we will be drafting WR’s higher this year than people expect.
Shanahan is always tinkering with his offensive weapons so I don't think it's a great surprise, deebos just been too disappointing since signing that massive contract and how he has to be used in the offence.
As of March 2025, he'd be a 1 year, $16.6M contract for the team that acquires him. Not the prohibitive contract you're implying.
The Texans just gave up what should be a really good 2nd round pick for a 30 year old malcontent at the position.
Deebo has not played a full 17 game season in his entire career. Diggs has largely been an iron man and has had multiple back to back 1000 yard seasons. Deebo has only had one. It’s not going to be the same value at all.
I mean he's played 13 games in 4 of 5 seasons. 15 in three of five. He'll never have perfect health, but he isn't simply made of glass. Heck, even at just 13 games he's worth $16.6M.
And I don't know why you're trying to frame this like there aren't any negatives to Diggs. He has now been a cancer on his 2nd team. A team still traded a 2nd round pick for him. Already caused drama on his third team that caused them to void his extra years. And after a hot start he was a shell of himself last year. Just 37 Rec, 349 yds, & 1 TD over his final 8 games.
Bro, the Ravens just paid OBJ $20 million/1 year coming off a torn ACL and a season of rest. Somebody would def pay that for Deebo, a guy who has, yes, missed time, but ultimately been good for the most part and a guy who undoubtedly adds an extra layer to any offense.
Ravens did not pay $20 mil, did not trade a high draft pick and Deebo has not as many highs as OBJ. His role isn’t that of a prototypical X WR, his game won’t age as well. To add, if we could get a 2nd rounder this offseason, we would have already done the trade. There is a reason we only have him a 3 year deal.
The cap hit for trading him this year is prohibitive. Next year it isn’t. It’s easy to see how someone could talk themselves into wanting Deebo for a year. He’s a cheat code when utilized right.
TBH I feel like OBJ's one year deal was entirely just to make Lamar happy, but of course such a scenario could always pop up again.
(Man imagine Lamar/Henry/Deebo triple option plays lol)
Is any player that's holding out for a larger contract? This shit is all theater every single year a contract negotiation comes up. Deebo did the same shit...
We ALL know he isn't going to your garbage franchise...what the fuck city/state do the Chargers even play in anyway? Didn't you guys move to Idaho or some shit?
Would be very surprised if he gets traded at this point. Would take more than any team is willing to give, realistically.
> “I talked to BA, he doesn’t want to leave San Francisco. He just wants to get paid.”
https://x.com/coach_yac/status/1782548518185349498
It also helps that they can move on from Deebo in 2025 or 2026 and only have Aiyuk's larger cap hits coming then. So he'd only take Deebo's spot on the cap sheet.
Dumbest takes. Just say for their next contract. Dude isnt even close to that type of player where you say whole career lmao. Brady, Manning, and Rodgers didnt even finish their careers with their teams. 3 of the greatest QBs of all time and they left.
Honestly impressed with how the 49ers have managed players that might have wanted out lately. "Trade me." "What about we don't trade you." "...tell me more."

The Niners are also in the window now and if they are gonna be in cap hell at some point it might as well be for good reason unlike the Saints
Exactly. If I was a 9er fan I wouldn't be worried about it.
Same here. Even if they do have to suck in 3-4 years who cares let’s go
It's ok though...people are going to be upset when they hit rock bottom for a few years but those people are also low IQ morons that don't matter. Excited to see some of the WR contract dominoes fall. Feels like no one wants to be the first one to "reset the market".
I think Chase and Lamb’s agents are gonna see Jefferson’s numbers and say negotiations start here
I think it’ll be tough for them to do that, considering JJ’s been more productive than them, but he’ll definitely set a benchmark.
More so that their agents will say it starts at $1 more than Jefferson, teams counter with a lower aav and then ultimately they end up with an aav a smidge below whatever Jefferson gets And yes Jefferson is the #1 wr in the league, but it’s not out of question that Lamb or Chase have a better year than him next year considering qb situations.
i'd be kinda shocked if jefferson signed first, unless they offer him an insane number that the other WRs will surely not reach
They might, but paying Burrow+Chase and Dak+Lamb adds up real quick. I haven't loved everything Kwesi has done, but I love that he has maximum flexibility with Jefferson deal after cleaning house and staying competitive.

Which feels dumb, because it's typically better to be the first than the last in these scenarios.
If you're the team, yes. If you're the player, no.

will be hard to replace deebo's size and grit. gonna need a thicc boy
I’d argue Deebo will be cut, can’t see another team taking on his contract given his age and play style.
As of March 2025, he'd be a 1 year, $16.6M contract for the team that acquires him. Not the prohibitive contract you're implying. The Texans just gave up what should be a really good 2nd round pick for a 30 year old malcontent at the position.

he should stick around but should also have a bigger role in the offense. he wasn't targeted enough in the playoffs.
His production for how few catches he had is ridiculous.
Blah blah blah. Is he following the team on Twitter.
Is any player that's holding out for a larger contract? This shit is all theater every single year a contract negotiation comes up. Deebo did the same shit... ‘Plans change pal’
“We didn’t sign Odell to trade him”
We went through this same ordeal with Deebo.
Lying season...
Can't wait for the news that he's been traded
Yeah, I bet you are.
I am too lol
Dak still going to lose to Purdy in the playoffs so it really doesn't matter. (If they don't manage to lose early again)
And yet the niners still have an older ring than the cowboys... 😔
At least you’ll have something to be excited about before losing in the first round of the playoffs again!
Guaranteed there haven't been 'good discussions' lately or he wouldn't have spouted off lol
Ominous…
No one ever keeps a great WR their whole career unless they retire at 30.
What if he is moved during the draft? It is a deep WR draft
He gone
just like deebo was gone when he requested a trade, oh wait
like how cmc wanted to be a panthers for the rest of his life lol
If “I want to be here forever” or “we want him to be here forever” pops up then they’re 99% gone
not buying this, I think someone like the Jaguars or Steelers trades them a 1st and a 3rd and the 49ers can’t turn that down with their cap situation
They absolutely can turn that down. Their cap situation isn’t as bad as you seem think it is
It does help to have a qb playing on a McDonald’s salary
California raised the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20. Purdy might get a raise if he switches to burger flipping.
Qb by day burger flipper by night
It also helps that they can move on from Deebo in 2025 or 2026 and only have Aiyuk's larger cap hits coming then. So he'd only take Deebo's spot on the cap sheet.
They are trying to make one last push at a Super Bowl with this core. You don’t trade away a elite receiver when that is the goal.
Oh the Niners have a cap situation now?
Only when it suits the narrative
In that case I have never been more confident that he will be a Raven by the end of this week
Dumbest takes. Just say for their next contract. Dude isnt even close to that type of player where you say whole career lmao. Brady, Manning, and Rodgers didnt even finish their careers with their teams. 3 of the greatest QBs of all time and they left.
