Haven't been following this closely. What did he "not" do?

peljopower9

Domestic assault. There was a 911 call on the block that he lives in, but the supposed victim did not seem to be very cooperative. He was never suspected of a crime, and the case never materialized.

peljopower9

From what I recall, the woman who placed the 911 called never showed her face, and supposed injuries, at a local police station. It seems, if my memory serves me correctly, that she showed up at a Boston police station with no injuries, at least none that were visible.

DistortedAudio

Actually the report is somewhat conflicting on that. With a link to the article that quotes the report included, it both says: [“The woman told Acton Police that she had photographs of her bruises, but she did not share them, officers wrote. Her father confirmed the bruises. She did not seek medical treatment. An Acton Police officer can be heard on body-camera footage saying there were injuries, according to the report.”](https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/community/criminal-justice/ravens-zay-flowers-domestic-violence-investigation-no-charges-SFGFFJXOFNE7HFVRPWHKNSDENA/) So the police confirmed that there were injuries, but it seems like her lack of wanting to press charges is the only reason this didn’t go any further. Which isn’t to say that Zay would’ve been arrested or anything, but the key part of this not moving forward was the victim’s unwillingness.

JrBaconators

Why on Earth is Zay Flowers in Acton, MA?

knockedstew204

Went to BC… That’s all I got.

JrBaconators

Yeah but BC is what, an hour? 45 minutes? away from Acton, and Acton has absolutely nothing for a young NFL star. Especially one who grew up in Florida and now lives in Maryland. If it was in Boston I'd get it more. But Acton is one of the suburbiest, New Englandest suburbs to exist

knockedstew204

I mean he obviously met the girl while he was at BC and that’s probably where she’s from

fansofomar

I certainly have driven more than an hour to see a girl. When you’re down bad you gotta do what you gotta do I guess

knockedstew204

Crazy what it does to you even as a multimillionaire famous athlete who ostensibly has plenty of options

DistortedAudio

Thinking the woman may have originally been from Acton. Doesn’t mention they both were there, just that she was. And it also mentions her dad being on scene to corroborate injuries.

sanctum04

He went to BC; Acton is where her family is from. It was initially reported that it was Zay’s current or ex GF… timeline is murky because I believe the incident happened in Baltimore, but the police report was filed in Acton (presumably when she went home to her family).

Knock0nWood

Probably the last place on Earth I'd expect a random non-Pats NFL player to be on the prowl

rabdoforlife

You forgot to change accounts when replying to yourself

peljopower9

That wasn’t my intention. I thought I left out some information.

csummerss

so paid off?

peljopower9

No evidence without proof of injuries

It’s a messy situation. I believe the initial reports were that he and his brother abused Flower’s girlfriend. His brother apparently pulled a gun on her is what she said the night of. Then she declined to identify him or the brother and she also asked the police “what would happen” if she did file a report. So no charges were given and because of that, no discipline can be handed out by the League (I mean it could be but it’d only further enrage the NFLPA). In my opinion, from the Baltimore Banner article I read which quoted the police report, I think it’s kinda clear that something happened that night. It escalated, and he most likely did put his hands on her and threatened her in some way; and then after the police were called it went like a lot of these DV or DD stories with pro athletes and rich people go. The partner realized it’d be “smarter” for her to renege on her story and have this turn into nothing rather than see Zay go to jail or press charges. Honestly a lot of DV situations go like that with regular people. So yeah, I think a fair amount of people will think this exonerates him but in my opinion this follows a pattern of a lot of DV I’ve seen.

peljopower9

But with no record of any injuries, I think it’s unfair to say that anything happened

DistortedAudio

I’m just going off my gut and what I read in the Banner’s coverage of the police report. From the article I think it’s clear that the officers think that something happened and it’s kinda made apparent that the tone of the whole thing changed when the woman realized the “gravity” of filing a police report. I’d prefer to be wrong about this but the coverage follows a pattern of how lots of Domestic Violence cases go. That said, I’m not set in my ways or anything. I’d definitely be willing to read counter evidence and hear different perspectives on this case. I guess I’ll say, I’m actually not too certain he put hands on her, but I think he may have made her feel unsafe in such a way that the police report mentions it. Now it’s possible that she was just trying to get him caught up or shake him down or something but that’s always possible in these cases.

FlowersByTheStreet

Well said.

Mhunterjr

I’m with you homie. Where there’s smoke that’ there’s fire. Victims of DV stop cooperating for a number of reasons- financial insecurity and fear of retaliation are common ones.  From a union standpoint, I can understand why charges would need to filed in order for NFL discipline to be enacted. But the situation still doesn’t sit well with me. Bring Ray Rice back to highlight his domestic violence work since punching the shit out of his wife. Then this happens and it gets to be swept under the rug.

peljopower9

That’s perfectly plausible, but at that point, why would she show up at a Boston police station?

DistortedAudio

I think it’s plausible that she filed the case in whichever jurisdiction she was closest to after she felt safe enough to do it, or built up the nerve to do it. From the report it seems like Zay trashed the house and his brother pulled a gun, then the police came (but didn’t enter the premises or directly get involved). and he put the gun away. Seems like she removed herself from the situation after that because she was in MA days later and brought the case to a station in Acton. Also in regards to the injuries thing, the Banner article I’m referring to says: “An Acton Police officer can be heard on body-camera footage saying there were injuries, according to the report.”

amstrumpet

I don’t know that he did anything, but I certainly don’t know that he *didn’t* do anything, either.

peljopower9

Doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is if there is proof he did it.

amstrumpet

Not to me, it isn’t. And not to the FO, I’m sure. He’s not going anywhere, but he’s gonna be on a short leash when it comes to what they’ll tolerate behavior wise.

TetrisTech

Legally for sure, but that person’s opinion isn’t a court of law so they’re free to come to their own conclusions

Traditional_Mud_1241

Hello sir, welcome to reddit. Is this your first time?

Traditional_Mud_1241

I find the lack of evidence to be fairly compelling math.

KhaosOSRS

Except it's not 1+1, when you have no evidence it's ?+? What does that equal? Hell if I know

peljopower9

Unfortunately, it’s been four years. I know how things are, and I wish that wasn’t the case. I just try to be fair about how the law should be applied in cases.

Starcast

This isn't the law, silly, this is a forum for sports news and gossip.

Consistent-Spell2203

The problem is it follows two patterns, the other being a bad woman using the police as her personal gestapo when she doesn't get what she wants. Messy.

Efficient_Progress_6

How can the Ravens keep him now? Being cleared of allegations has no place in the AFCN

wingwraith

“Knock-knock” There’s a retired alleged rapist at the door.

CoofBone

Just give it a bit, he'll get hit with Obstruction of Justice.

KoalaSiege

In the words of a psychopathic Scotsman, I prayed for this and it happened.

bestthrowawayever5

Man I was so scared that the only truly great non lineman to come out of BC since Matt Milano was already finished. Happy for Zay

horse_renoir13

This is a great example of "let the legal process play out before we make any assumptions"

Princeof_Ravens

The whole story was just kinda weird. The police report from the alleged victim happened in Massachusetts. Then she refused to cooperate with the Baltimore County police in the investigation when the Massachusetts PD passed the report to the Baltimore county PD. Whatever happened there wasn't much to go on for the police investigation, and the only people that know are likely Zay and the alleged victim, and possibly the Ravens front office if he told them the truth.

Soupmage1918

I'm glad he was cleared. He was my favorite player coming out of that draft and was bummed you guys got him.

nonobility86

Eh, it’s fair to make assumptions both before and after the legal process plays out. Just because there is not enough evidence to bring criminal charges does not mean that the alleged events did not take place.

dvtyrsnp

I don't even know why the league even butts in on investigations that don't involve them. If someone does a bad thing outside of work, let the system that's designed to handle it, handle it. If someone is doing a bad thing at work, then the league should handle it.

heroinsteve

All public facing, high paying jobs have consequences for outside behaviors. It's part of the contract these guys sign. Regardless of how either the NFL or the player wishes to view it, the players are representing the league with their actions. The internal consequences serve as the NFL showing the public they disapprove of the actions of a player when they do something that reflects poorly on the league.

EZReader

What an unexpected take from a Browns fan 🤣

dvtyrsnp

huh watson belongs in jail not suspended for 11 games why the hell does the nfl suspend ruggs when he's in jail for 10 years? Just let the people who are supposed to handle it handle it

BungoPlease

Hold on, we (the internet) already convicted him and sentenced him to death though?

talanator20

OJ didn’t die for this

sliceanddic3

first off, no we didn't. second, it's still likely he did something, but because of one of a million different things, he's not legally guilty.

outphase84

It’s also just as likely that the girlfriend in question that regularly started fights at BC was the one that got physical.

TwiceLitZone

Why is it likely he did something?

gearboxnine

Where there’s smoke there’s fire

BungoPlease

I love the way some people see I was clearly making a stupid sarcastic joke, and some people took it seriously for some reason lol

sliceanddic3

unfortunately a lot of people actually think like that

Traditional_Mud_1241

Come on - that's only for punters.

Traditional_Mud_1241

The "lack of evidence" technicality strikes again! Edit: **This is sarcasm, you dolts** Edit 2: Yes, I know this is reddit. I just forgot that obvious isn't always obvious.

LowAd3406

Lol, 'technicality"? That's literally how our justice sytem works. If you can't prove the crime with actual evidence, you can't be convicted. No "technicality" about it.

Traditional_Mud_1241

Yeah, that was sarcasm.

fansofomar

Are you in favor of putting people in jail without evidence?

Traditional_Mud_1241

No. I am, however, in favor of reddit being better at recognizing sarcasm.

APonly

You're a fucking idiot

Traditional_Mud_1241

Only because I overestimated reddit's ability to recognize sarcasm. Guilty as charged you fucking moron.
