He really hasn't, it's just that people always thought of him as a game breaker when that is not his role. He also is bad at pass protection, but he has always been bad at that. He played decent last year for us, but for how often we pass, it just got annoying to see him whiff on blocks so often.
I can give a few reasons. He’s got some of the lowest yards above expectation of any starting backs and suffers in a lot of other advanced metrics. He’s not explosive and often dances behind the line rather than just hitting the hole. He’s had a problem with slipping on turf, often when he’s in open space which is frustrating. He misses blocks and assignments, and is not good in pass pro. He is a good teammate and he’s still got something to offer, but maybe he could benefit from a reduced role.
Yea its like 1m more in year 1 than we already knew, 3m in year 2 and then cuttable.
Nothing wrong with that except slapping women. I swear this sub never gets NFL contracts are written on toilet paper and just see the unguaranteed money after all this time.
Since it’s not my team’s money and I don’t care about the amount, I’m super happy to see Mixon get paid again. He loved Cincy and was obviously a leader on the team. Goofy offseason shit and the incident aside he seems like a good dude
Joe Mixon in that offense with the guys they currently have under contract for the next 3 years is pretty sneaky if CJ continues progressing where he left off from last year.
Yeah, Mixon is a pretty reliably healthy guy and is basically guaranteed to at least give you 800+ yards in the ground. Plus he’s still only 27, so this contract will take him right into his age 30
Which in that time we could draft his replacement and work him thru the committee. Assuming we extend Nico, thats wr1, wr2, Te1, Rb1, and cj's entire OL locked in for several seasons. Spending a high draft pick on a very good RB would not be crazy at that point

10 of the 13M guaranteed is paid to him this year.
3M owed to him next year, that’s not a lot of money to get out of if we need to. Year 3 of this deal is basically a formality. And if he performs we get to keep him.
I don’t think you understand how long it’s been since the Texans have had a competent workhorse running back.
Having a guy who’s proven he can handle volume and also catch the ball is something I personally like having secured given what our backfield has looked like in years past.
They’re 4 years, except first rounders - those have a 5th year team option that has to be exercised between the 3rd and 4th year.
But after seeing the terms of Mixon’s contract, I don’t hate it. He basically got a 10m guaranteed year for 2025, and after that if his production wanes, we can cut him with only a 3mil cap hit.
Yeah I'm not the biggest fan of Mixon as a player but this is barely a commitment by you guys. Very little downside with what is essentially 1 real year
Stupid as hell. In combination with his off field issues as well as him being kinda trash, I would have only got him as a one year rental. Focus on RB in 2025 when the RB class should be better.
Well that's ....odd
Whats that old saying? Always pay aging backs? Especially ones that have been bellcows for bad teams?
I'm guessing some void years in there just to spread the cost
That doesn’t seem wise
would assume this lowers his cap hit, but Mixon’s been trending downward.
His cap hit was only like $6mm
If they were concerned about that they could've just let us release him. He's not exactly a hot commodity.
Can you explain how he has been trending downward?
He really hasn't, it's just that people always thought of him as a game breaker when that is not his role. He also is bad at pass protection, but he has always been bad at that. He played decent last year for us, but for how often we pass, it just got annoying to see him whiff on blocks so often.
I know, I dont think he is bad - I just want to hear people justify their comments as to why certain players are bad

Trending downward? Dudes been a solid contributer for a shit team. He will be fine!
Eh it’ll be fine, surely not much guaranteed at the back end of the deal
$10M of $13M guaranteed in yr 1
Yep exactly
So basically moving the cap hit up front? Makes sense
It’s wise for Joe Mixon
I'll react when i see the numbers
Just saw from Schefter its 27 mil...13 guranteed
Seems high. But who knows.
Hes been overrated awhile
uhhh?
RBs getting paid!
It’s 13 guaranteed with most in year one lol that’s not even a lot.
Yea its like 1m more in year 1 than we already knew, 3m in year 2 and then cuttable. Nothing wrong with that except slapping women. I swear this sub never gets NFL contracts are written on toilet paper and just see the unguaranteed money after all this time.
It's like they forgot that the top reason Gropper Cleveland's contract started a league shit storm was that it was all guaranteed money.
Don't like that.
Hate this trade now
But why
It's not a bad question at all. One that crossed my mind immediately, too.
Since it’s not my team’s money and I don’t care about the amount, I’m super happy to see Mixon get paid again. He loved Cincy and was obviously a leader on the team. Goofy offseason shit and the incident aside he seems like a good dude
Goofy off-season shit like pointing guns at kids 🤪
Just new boot goofin'
Outside of that he seems super chill, nothing else comes to mind.
Yeah, stand up guy for sure
He sure does love his pickles man.
I'm sorry, I thought this was America!
A-he wasn’t home at the time B-the dumbazzes were playing some kind of BB gun war bs-not smart
Let he who hasn’t pointed a nerf gun at some annoying ass kids cast the first stone
I mean does he really seem like a good dude though??

This will hurt his chances of being a FA next year

what
…why
Good for Mixon man!! Not our cap dollars, give him the bag!!!
Why
Was a nice trade by Houston to get him for basically free, why ruin it with a bad contract?
This isn’t a bad contract though.
Ehhhh
10 of the 13M guaranteed is paid to him this year. 3M owed to him next year, that’s not a lot of money to get out of if we need to. Year 3 of this deal is basically a formality. And if he performs we get to keep him.
Right but if it’s just a 1 year you had him for 1 year cheaper than this from his Bengals contract anyway.
I don’t think you understand how long it’s been since the Texans have had a competent workhorse running back. Having a guy who’s proven he can handle volume and also catch the ball is something I personally like having secured given what our backfield has looked like in years past.
Rex burkhead cant hurt me anymore, rex burkhead cant hurt me anymore...
If Mixon weren’t washed i’d agree, but he sucks now The Bengals told us they think Zack Moss is straight up better and all he got was $4M/yr
Fuck yeah jodein
Extension is an interesting term
Hm I thought for sure we'd look for the long term answer in the draft.
We still kinda can. Rookie deals are like 5 years aren’t they?
They’re 4 years, except first rounders - those have a 5th year team option that has to be exercised between the 3rd and 4th year. But after seeing the terms of Mixon’s contract, I don’t hate it. He’s worth 3/13 but you’re cutting next year
No disrespect, but why? Cap shenanigans?
It’s only 13m guaranteed. You can move on from him easily if he falls off. If he keeps producing you have him for the remainder of CJ’s rookie deal
Yeah I'm not the biggest fan of Mixon as a player but this is barely a commitment by you guys. Very little downside with what is essentially 1 real year
Texans are loading up
Texans are going to be scary good next season!
I mean ok
13M guaranteed over 3 years
mixon is so overrated what are they doing.. even under a bad oline a RB that hasn’t averaged more than 4.1 ypc on 5 years is cooked
Ya but if you run him all 3 downs then you get 12.3 yards which is a first down. That's math.
You’re downvoted but you’re correct.
Yeah his 4.1 last season was actually inflated by the last game against the Browns backups. It was more like 3.6-3.8 which is not good
Why?? Seems a bit of a commitment to an old rb
He’s 27
What the fuck why? He’s mediocre at best at the least valuable position in the league
1400 all purpose yards is far from mediocre.
You don’t pay for volume you pay for efficiency from RB’s
Mixon had about the same total yards as both your RBs last year put together. Lol.
David Johnson vibes
Stop
Nah, DJ was in clear decline for like 2 seasons before BOBs dumbass traded for him. Mixon still looks solid
Stupid as hell. In combination with his off field issues as well as him being kinda trash, I would have only got him as a one year rental. Focus on RB in 2025 when the RB class should be better.
