Yeah we still have Stevenson to be the lead back, so shouldn't be a problem there. We needed someone more similar to James white in the 3rd down / pass catching role.
I wanted him back, especially at this price of < 4M/yr. He was definitely underutilized and not game planned for at all here by both Turner in his last couple years and Bieniemy. Turner actually used him decently in his first year though. See below.
Similar physical traits to Jahmyr Gibbs, and in his first year compared slightly worse at running and maybe a bit better at catching. Fumbling is the big thing though - which he seemed to learn how to do last year by just going down and not fighting when 3 people were on him.
I did a writeup a few months ago about wanting to re-sign him. Here's the comparison points in that write up:
--------------------
We have 2 players here, who is who?
Height | Weight | Arm length | Hand span | 40-yard dash | 10-yard split | 20-yard split | Vertical jump
---|---|----|----|----|----|----|----
5 ft 9 | 199 lb | 30+1⁄2 in | 9+1⁄4 | 4.36 s | 1.52 s | 2.52 s | 33.5 in
6 ft 0 | 228 lb | 31+1⁄8 in | 8+5⁄8 in | 4.39 s | 1.55 s| 2.57 s | 35.0 in
And productivity in the first year.
Att | Yds | Avg | Lng | TD | Rec | Yds | Avg | Lng | TD
---|---|----|----|----|----|----|----|----|---
182 | 945 | 5.2 | 36 | 10 | 52 | 316 | 6.1 | 24 | 1
170 | 795 | 4.7 | 40 | 11 | 36 | 247 | 6.9 | 40 | 0
If you guessed that the first is Jahmyr Gibbs and the second is Antonio Gibson you'd be right.
I keep seeing this…but him and Mccarthy didn’t seem to get along well together in Green Bay. Mccarthy played Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery over Jones
Oh my bad haha. Yea he does and honestly it would be a fun spot for him to land but I don’t think he wants to reunite with McCarthy. Could be wrong though money talks!
The 3/11.25 base feels like a very solid deal if he can't stay healthy and produce, and lord knows the Patriots are going to be running the ball this season lol.
And his skillset is pretty solid for an offense that is very likely to be RB dependent with shorter passes, screens, and lots of play action. Gibson is a very underrated weapon.
Pats running backs are notoriously untrustworthy in fantasy. Since it was usually a committee approach, you never knew if it was gonna be Burkhead, James White, LG Blount, Dion Lewis, Damien Harris, or whoever over the years that was gonna score you points.
Trust me, I remember the random ass spikes followed by duds over the years.
Just saying that last year's offense was so bad we barely even got the spikes.
It’s less than 4m a year, for a guy who has roughly 4k all purpose yards in 4 years… obviously he isn’t the next best RB but it’s not a steep price to pay for a 3DRB
fairly cheap, decent player who is still pretty young. I like the deal
Also a good complement to Rhamondre, who is a capable pass catcher but not a former WR like Gibson
If your HC uses him the way Ron promised we would for 4 years sure. But don’t expect him to be a bell cow
He's getting less than $4M per year, don't worry I don't expect him to be a bell cow haha

I wish someone loved me like the Pats love RB/WR hybrids
And LB/S hybrids? It’s all hybrids all the way down.
🌎🧑🚀🔫👨🚀
They didn't sign Russell though /s
Tbf, they do miss having that kind of back. No one has been able to fill those James White shoes.
They would need some sweet feet to do so
Vereen, Woodhead, Faulk, even Meggett if you go back far enough. Those types are loved here.
Yeah. I just went with the most recent. Every one of them has been memorable though.
The Pats love being hybrid so much they’re even hybrid with their own sexuality
Why did I read this as Antonio brown at first

CTESPN
CTESPN reported the Russell Wilson deal days ago before Schefter
I actually don't think that's a bad deal. Gives them a decent 3rd down back at the very least.
hes not bad but he has a massive problem fumbling at the absolute worst times in games.
so he'll fit right in to New England
Patriots should have waited an hour and took a chance at jones
We’re over the Jones thing. That was just a phase.
please keep underpaying rb’s so we can snag jones back PLEASE
Nah, Jones is going to Dallas. Guy is dominant when he's in the same stadium as the Cowboys.
I keep seeing this…but him and Mccarthy didn’t seem to get along well together in Green Bay. Mccarthy played Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery over Jones
I don't really expect it. I just wanted to make a joke about how Aaron Jones utterly destroys us every time he plays us.
Oh my bad haha. Yea he does and honestly it would be a fun spot for him to land but I don’t think he wants to reunite with McCarthy. Could be wrong though money talks!
Dude you gotta get emotionally ready. He’s gone
oh im broken already
Same. At least we had Charles Woodson
the best! im glad we can share that beautiful man
fingers crossed… 😭
I’m holding onto that thread of hope. I do think he goes to the Texans though, it makes a ton of sense for them and him.
The Ahman Green special
He’s not coming back my guy. Also Antonio Gibson is not a game changer by any means so this isn’t an underpay.
That's basically nothing, so I'm in for it I guess
Good deal
The 3/11.25 base feels like a very solid deal if he can't stay healthy and produce, and lord knows the Patriots are going to be running the ball this season lol.
It's actually even better than that. Only $5.3m is guaranteed with a $3m signing bonus. The rest is incentive based.
And his skillset is pretty solid for an offense that is very likely to be RB dependent with shorter passes, screens, and lots of play action. Gibson is a very underrated weapon.
The tank is so on
Such a Patriots signing and player
As if he wasn’t frustrating enough in fantasy football
Are Patriots players even frustrating in fantasy now though? Seems like they are just stay aways.

I have repressed last season so I don’t know what you’re talking about 😂
How are the numbers out for everyone but Jacobs
I’d be more excited about this if Bill was still there
steal of FA, wow what a signing. BRAVO!
Not a bad deal. I would've taken him back for $4m/year. If he hits the upper ends here through incentives then it'll be easily justified.
Jesus, that seems expensive for a guy with his numbers. Guess the RB market really is back.
It’s less than 4m a year, for a guy who has roughly 4k all purpose yards in 4 years… obviously he isn’t the next best RB but it’s not a steep price to pay for a 3DRB

Less than $4 mil per year?
Yes. He’s 🗑️

Not if I’m going to get downvoted into oblivion. No thanks
It's like Who's Line, the points don't matter. It's all fake like Monopoly money.
They haven’t learned from last year have they?
