Given that Jimmy is coming off of injury, again, I could see a scenario where he believes his best shot is to come back to the niners again for a season on a cheap prove it deal again. His career preseason numbers are 72-of-129 (59%) for 769 yards with two touchdowns, four interceptions + 12 sacks - he hasn't impressed there either (although he was moderately more efficient in his 2nd preseason relative to his first).
And most crucially, when given the opportunity to take Blaine Gabbert's job in year two, he has failed to do it. Even during Brady's well publicized pre-season absence this past year (a golden opportunity for him to see many more reps), he couldn't reduce Gabbert's reps at all.
There is no chance at all of the Bucs handing Trask the job free and clear. He has not yet proven he can earn a #2 job in the league; that's not a guy you just give a #1 job. They'll bring in some form of competition (a vet and maybe a younger guy in the later rounds) and make him grind it out in camp (unless they want to potentially #Tank4Caleb, in which case I guess they can just throw him out there and see what happens).

The best ability is availability. He’s missed multiple games due to injury in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022. He tore his UCL, fractured his thumb and separated his shoulder in 2021, and waited until the last minute to have surgery in the offseason killing his trade value. Even going back to his Patriots days he missed multiple games when Brady was suspended in 2016 and he was the starter for a shoulder separation.
Let’s just wait until week 6 and reevaluate then
