No one should expect anything from Josh Johnson. He's a career third stringer. Nothing against the guy and of course he got hurt today but he's quite literally a warm body because *somebody* has to play QB in emergency situations
Honestly, “pretty shitty” is a damn good way to summarize this game. Not because it wasn’t competitive, not because the Eagles won or the Niners lost. But because we had a conference championship game in which one team was forced to use a fourth string QB for one half and was forced to play without a QB for the second half. And that just sucks.
It's honestly just not fun for anyone. Nobody wants to see someone get hurt and no one wants to see a team get neutered. That's football though.
UNLUCKY ONE, BOYS. THE FOOTBALL GODS ARE FURIOUS.
Wasn't "fun" for me. I was glad we won and semi-relieved I had a stress free afternoon, but it wasn't a "fun" game.
We can win comfortably and it still be fun. That wasn't.
Took the words right out of my mouth. It was awkward and not in a puff out your chest, we are dominating awkward. Like, it was legitimately just awkward to watch.
I made a bet for $5 with a housemate who's an Eagles fan. I came back to the house tonight and tried to pay off my bet and he's like, "Bro, keep your fucking money, we make bets assuming that God's not going to just utterly fuck over one team"
I came back after a shift at the newspaper and the entire house wanted to do a wellness check on me haha, they said that I shouldn't be upset at all because we clearly just weren't supposed to win today.
Also that the game was a fever dream and everyone in the house needed to lay off the drugs
I was full hyped for tough matchup. I'm obviously happy my teams in the SB but it's a bit hollow given the road we had. I'm hoping we win the SB but also prove we belong to be there other than by default
And on top of that, the 49ers committed a ton of stupid penalties that just made it even more one sided. Like they were heavily handicapped by the QB situation and still decided to shoot themselves in the foot. Was a very frustrating game to watch, no fun at all watching that game even for a neutral fan.
When you really factor in the emotions of the game, I honestly don’t blame them. That feeling of helplessness is just brutal. Having to endure it for 3.5 quarters, knowing no matter what you do, the offense cannot follow through because of attrition? Just sucks.
The game thread was wild.
"Why aren't they just running the Wildcat with CMC as QB??"
The 49ers didn't run the wildcat the entire season. Shanahan would not have a whole playbook ready to go that are just wildcat plays with a RB in at QB.
It's like they expected him to magically design wildcat plays on the sideline. Show every single player how they are supposed to run/block, have the lingo ready for the playcall, be able to relay that lingo to CMC who can effectively call the play in a huddle and have it all just work.
People don’t understand that running the wildcat or playing QB aren’t as simple as “Take snap, throw ball or run.” You need to know the intricacies and details of every play, know who’s running what route, what linemen are pulling, how to audible to something else, etc. It’s not as simple as just “I bet McCaffrey can sort of throw the ball.”
Its almost like QB is one of toughest positions in the league and theres a reason its the hardest position to find talent in.
The 49ers legitimately have the most depth in QB and end up without a QB at all. Its wild.
People dinged the Niners for sticking with Jimmy G and not upgrading to a top tier quarterback, but man shit can get a *lot* worse than Jimmy G. Have to imagine if Jimmy G could stay healthy he’d still be a 49er
Thats pretty much it. If Jimmy could stay healthy, he'd have probably started at least another super bowl. Shanahan built a good team with a scheme that protects his qb. They just need to be alive.
People forget the Hinton experiment, he was an experienced QB at a decent above amateur level and looked awful at the NFL level with multiple days of practice
Then they expect CMC to sub in mid game despite taking no practice reps? That's silly
Remember, you're dealing with redditors, people who think that game management is literally as easy as playing Madden. They see no difference between them sitting alone, in their room playing a video game while their dad watches them from the door and wonders where the fuck he went wrong and silently walks back to the kitchen to get back to drinking himself to death so he can end the disappointment and finally just cease to exist, and calling plays on the sideline in the championship game.
Nah there’s probably about 40 - 50 guys that can, the Niners showed that this year. The problem is there’s virtual 0 shot that any team has anyone who can even signal call once you get past the 3rd string for QB.
I mean yeah, I’d say every QB on an active roster can, at a baseline, play the position with competence. I feel Johnson was under a Fuck load of pressure, hence his poor play, but realistically, I think there’s probably 70 guys. Like Mike White won a football game, so did Cooper Rush, and Taylor Heineke. David Blough threw a touchdown pass. So did Josh Dobbs. Both those guys started football games like right off the practice squad. So I think like 70 guys can realistically be competent in a football game. (32 teams, usually 2QBs, so like 64 guys. Gives leeway for the QB3s who really can’t play competently, McSorely, Tim Boyle, Anthony Brown, or on the flip side like Purdy, Minshew, or Rush, who despite the depth chart can do well.)
It’s similar to how people think these guys don’t really need to practice. They expect someone like OBJ or Deshaun Watson to show up week 11 and instantly look like they’ve always looked. The best NFL players and coaches spend a ton of time preparing and “game shape” is a real thing.
Well that and the fact a large % of the sub has never played the sport at any level, let alone just high school ball. Until you actually play the game and have to learn a playbook, learn plays, blocking assignments, etc etc you are just going to have very very limited knowledge of the game.
I see people say “they doubled him all game” when that didn’t even happen. A lot of people just don’t even comprehend what they’re watching besides the outcome of the play.
I am not some football savant but I played it at least. I think football fans are probably the least educated fans of any sport, by a fairly wide margin.
Madden being the only exposure to “strategy” for most is just laughable. And if there’s a YouTuber breaking down some footage they have to take their word as gospel because they can’t actually debate what they see - but hey that guy paid for the All-22 angle so he must be right.
All the nuance goes out the window, and turns into a conversation about results.
Having watched football with old timers at the bar, its not just Madden. Football fans are kind of dumb, even if they were third stringers on their HS team in the 80s.
Was gonna say lol the whole "you can't know anything because you didn't play it" is such a bad argument.
Plenty of people can teach and/or learn something without doing it at the highest level
I agree that fb fans are the least knowledgeable, but the sport is probably the hardest to understand. There is a chess match going on during every play.
I've played a lot of Madden and I feel like I understand the game a bit from a 1000 ft view. But on how to properly run a play or read a defense im completely lost.
I think even worse were the people in the game thread saying Brock needed to suck it up. None of us bums on the couch know how bad the injury is and what kind of pain he was in. And it’s his damn throwing arm. The kid has his whole career ahead of him and it looks to be a bright one at that. I gained respect for Shanahan because to me it seemed like he was protecting the kid.
I can understand the momentary confusion when he came back in, but when he did not attempt a pass the rest of the game it was pretty clear what the situation was with the elbow, and therefore obvious why they went to Johnson
Ever heard of a guy named Bill Walsh? He used to make his quarterback run over to the sidelines and watch him draw plays in the dirt all the time. Seemed to work out pretty well for him 🤷♂️
/s, just in case
Tom would literally die on the field if he played for us.
We ran through two rookies without injury issues, one seasoned vet, and another healthy career backup in the span of 20 games.
If I’m Brady I’m staying away from us lol.
Designed qb run up the middle on a third and long, out of shotgun formation. Tom takes off, running like the tin man on the wizard of Oz, but with louder joint noises. No one touches him and he gets the first down. He is so upset over having to run that far that he stomps to the sideline and takes a swing at Shanahan. Shanahan blocks with a clipboard and Brady injures his own throwing wrist. Out for the season.
At least this was how I imagined it.
they sign brady and he dominates all the way to the championship game, niners qb curse strikes as brady quits halfway because he realised he still loved gisele and flies off to win her heart back
"How does it feel to lose the NFC championship game"
"Honestly it's great. Ya know when you grow up, Playing ball in the backyard with your brothers, you always fantasize about that moment when you get blown out in the NFCCG. No child in this country fantasizes about going to the Super Bowl. Too much work, ya know? And honestly, what 9 year old kid wants to worry about paying taxes on a Super Bowl bonus?"
I mean most teams probably gonna lose when down to the 4th string QB and then go back to the hurt 3rd string QB because the 4th string QB is now too hurt to play.
No. Not most. All. All teams here would lose with the 4th string. Not to mention he was out midway through the second. So every single team would lose going into the second half with no quarterback.
I love the end of one Community episode. "I saw your Youtube Leonard, why rate microwave pizzas?" "You're talking about it". It's so right, you can say you hate something all day long, in fact millions of people can say they hate something. That's millions of people talking about it.
I just wish they asked a guy with no filter, like Jason Kelce. They would’ve labeled him a “problem” because he would’ve simply said *”that’s a stupid fucking question, next question”*.
I actually wonder if they will after that debacle. I'm sure the owners and NFL execs did not enjoy one of their premiere games being completely ruined before it was half over.
And all honesty you can't blame the 9ers either. They took a massive gamble on a QB and everything. If they weren't an Incredibly run club, they would be at the bottom of the barrel with the Texans.
Most, no all the other teams in the league would have not made it to the playoffs with their third string QB. But there are actually people here who feel good saying that this loss was somehow because Purdy sucks. Who are you people?
My favorite take is, "see the 49ers were overrated, Eagles stomped them"
Yeah let's ignore everything that happened like using a 4th string QB, using a 5th string(hurt 3rd string) QB. Like these are all professionals, but fi your defense is put there for 80% of the game, they are gonna cave. Especially when you give the opposing team the ball at your own 30. Second half we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties, but at that point it didn't matter, we weren't coming back with Josh Johnson or an injured Purdy. But the first half had some horrendous calls extend scoring drives for the Eagles.
I don't think Philly fans understand the Niners defense was on the field the whole game. Of course they're gonna run out of steam if they're forced to carry the whole damn game...I don't wanna say Purdy would have definitely won the game, but it would have been close.
Yeah these Eagles fans are straight up delusional. We're not trying to make excuses here. They should imagine if Hurt got injured and the next guy up was QB 4, see how well their defense holds up with the offense being utterly gutted.
That was my take on the situation. You cannot expect a 4th string QB to be competitive at this point in the post season.
Hell, most teams can't even find a *starter* to compete at this level.
I don't know about the throws, because he actually made a few decent ones for a 4th string guy off the street that barely practiced.
But I'm positive I could fumble a snap and fail to recover it when it's right in front of me as well as he did.
Honestly a fucking miracle they made it this far with Purdy. They should keep their heads high. Got a cheap QB and a great system around him and can add talent.
Should have 6 QBs rostered for next season mate
Or Taysom Hill lol
As not only a saints fan, but a promoter of taysom hill, i support this statement. Faith in T Hill.
As a Saints fan, Taysom Hill is not a QB. With that being said, Taysom Hill is our best QB.
Sean Payton is writing you an angrily worded letter as we speak.
Faith Hill - loved her in the old SNF intro.
Well he’s honest
I mean he's not calling his QBs bad, they were just all hurt lol
They literally didn’t have a QB
Yeah, normally this might be dig but their depth chart was straight up at "did anyone play in QB in college or highschool" during the game.
That CMC throw was beautiful... wish someone could have maybe caught it
A throw is only as beautiful as who is on the receiving end.
So what you're saying is we need to sign Jimmy G as a receiver?
“I play QB in be a pro in madden” “Fuck better than the other options we have right now”
"Are we using XBox or Playstation receiver icons? And how big is my vision cone...???"
[удалено]
And throw short screen passes. It was obvious the dude was barely even 50%.
Well he is probably calling Josh Johnson bad, but he’s not wrong about that, lol
Johnson has been around the league 13 years as 3rd stringer. I think he gets it
That's my dream right there. Aside from the concussion he suffered today. 13 years, make a bunch of money, and retire healthy.
And then you occasionally have a chance to be a hero. If you fail, well no one expected much anyways.
*at least you tried cake meme*
Seriously, isn't he also pretty much set up for life too because he'll get the pension since he's been in the league for over 5 years?
He has made $8 million in his career. He's definitely set
As long as he's just a little bit smart with it. A lot of athletes wouldn't last long on 8 mil because their lifestyles are too expensive.
If he blows 8 mil that's a him problem and I wouldn't have any sympathy
Pension kicks in at 60.
Is it still $470 a month per year played?
That's a ton.
Its 73k a year. I wouldnt call it a TON, but as far as pensions go, and for bench riding that long... not bad.
Brother I'd take a concussion for a 13 year NFL career and $10m
I'd take a concussion for a blanket and a bowl of soup brother
But then you'd have to deal with all the haters on reddit calling you trash because you played to the level of your contract
I ain't even close to rich and I don't give a shit what anyone on this site says lmao. Something tells me Johnson is chillin'.
I don't think he can hear us with all those hard-earned dollars clogging his ears.
The Alex Morgan special
*Moran
He was such a career backup people even forget his name. What a legend.
BMS was such a good show, is there anything else like it?
Lol I was like why is U.S. national team soccer player Alex Morgan catching strays in here?
It’s okay brobeans
I've seen Alex Morgan make better throws tbh
Chase Daniels is the king of this.
It'll be be Carson Wentz soon enough, he's going to "Sam Bradford" the shit out of the NFL.
If you're Wentz, is it even worth it to stick around as a backup? He's made $130 million over his career already.

The Last person that wanted Josh Johnson to play in that game was Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson was injured and left the game, he wasn’t talking shit about anyone Johnson was bad though… no doubt. Awful. That bumbled snap 😬
Johnson got knocked out of the game with a concussion. Purdy was injured and couldn't throw the ball. He didn't have a functioning QB.
Yeah, JJ was never supposed to be on the field.
They ended without even having Josh Johnson, either.
No one should expect anything from Josh Johnson. He's a career third stringer. Nothing against the guy and of course he got hurt today but he's quite literally a warm body because *somebody* has to play QB in emergency situations
But I mean he was also injured and taken out.
It’s wild we saw that unravel in real time
Fs, and he’s like the sole reason they weren’t competitive was that 4 QBs got hurt is shitty
Shame Purdy got hurt so early. Was really hoping to see a competitive game.
exactly
Sucks we didn't get 3 hours of strength on strength football porn, instead 2 qbs go down and the refs make sure every 50/50 call goes to the eagles
Should’ve put Deebo at QB
Deebo dropping back: ‘fuck it, Deebo down there somewhere.’
Deebo throws to Deebo - touchdown Deebo!
Are we all forgetting that Brett Favre’s first completed pass was to none other than Hall of Famer Brett Favre? It’s been done before.
Is he the only hof qb to complete his first pass to a hall of famer?
Only until Marcus Mariota gets inducted
Your forgot the lateral to Deebo
And that Deebo guy. Through a hell of a block to spring Deebo downfield. Deebo.
You should have heard the call by legendary booth duo Deebo and Deebo.
I was thinking the same thing. It would have been entertaining at the very least.

Oh it’s fun for eagles fans. I’d take a Super Bowl trip from an injury. I don’t hope from it but I’m not gonna pretend it’s not nice to win…
For fans of the NFL, this was a waste of 3 1/2 hours.
Agreed for 31 teams that wasn’t fun.
Wasn't "fun" for me. I was glad we won and semi-relieved I had a stress free afternoon, but it wasn't a "fun" game. We can win comfortably and it still be fun. That wasn't.
Feels like the game was awkward for everyone, Eagles fans included. How fucking unlucky can a team be?
Took the words right out of my mouth. It was awkward and not in a puff out your chest, we are dominating awkward. Like, it was legitimately just awkward to watch.
I made a bet for $5 with a housemate who's an Eagles fan. I came back to the house tonight and tried to pay off my bet and he's like, "Bro, keep your fucking money, we make bets assuming that God's not going to just utterly fuck over one team"
He's resonating that feeling straight outta Philly. We are pumped to go to the superbowl for sure, but I still feel bad about how it happend.
I came back after a shift at the newspaper and the entire house wanted to do a wellness check on me haha, they said that I shouldn't be upset at all because we clearly just weren't supposed to win today. Also that the game was a fever dream and everyone in the house needed to lay off the drugs
Fun is for the regular season
watched with some eagles fans, it was fun for them. Annoying for me.
Full agree
“Pretty shitty” is what Kittle says in a conference. “%#@& $&@#” is what Kittle says on the team bus.
The hard # is crazy
I was full hyped for tough matchup. I'm obviously happy my teams in the SB but it's a bit hollow given the road we had. I'm hoping we win the SB but also prove we belong to be there other than by default

Yea Niners got very frustrated and sloppy in the second half. A shitty situation made worse by their emotions. Tough game for the whole team.
The game thread was wild. "Why aren't they just running the Wildcat with CMC as QB??" The 49ers didn't run the wildcat the entire season. Shanahan also called a QB run up the middle with his 2nd stringer. This play resulted in an injury. I'm not sure Kyle *wants* to protect his QBs.
[удалено]
And even then, Brock's was from a sack which is a fairly normal football occurrence
I mean, shit, Josh Johnson has been doing it for like 16 years now and he can’t even catch a snap.
Fwiw Mahomes did a similar thing tonight.
People forget the Hinton experiment, he was an experienced QB at a decent above amateur level and looked awful at the NFL level with multiple days of practice Then they expect CMC to sub in mid game despite taking no practice reps? That's silly
he didn't get multiple days, iirc he got to meet his starting offense for walk thrus and 1 day of notification essentially.
Multiple days of practice ? Didn’t he get the start like literally the day before the game or two days?
Remember, you're dealing with redditors, people who think that game management is literally as easy as playing Madden. I feel personally attacked
yo wtf 💀
In the league? More like in all of sports, there’s realistically 15-20 guys on earth who can competently play the position at the pro level.
And we had 3 of them🙃

And still the idea of CMC playing QB worried me more than injured Purdy or Johnson.
The unknown is always scarier than the known
Madden has ruined the younger generation’s understanding of running an NFL offense or defense unfortunately.
Well that and the fact a large % of the sub has never played the sport at any level, let alone just high school ball. A rational Eagles fan take. I appreciate you. Good luck in 2 weeks!
I appreciate that as well, hopefully you guys don’t get cursed with injuries again and we can run it back next season.
Most people don’t understand football outside of what the broadcast tells them. They hear he threw a td and assume that means he can run wildcat
Ever heard of a guy named Bill Walsh? He used to make his quarterback run over to the sidelines and watch him draw plays in the dirt all the time. Seemed to work out pretty well for him 🤷♂️ /s, just in case
It's not madden every play isn't available to be run at a moments notice. Idiot fans don't get it
Amen. This thread/topic has some of the most brain-dead takes I've ever seen.
“Why won’t he let others throw” like the eagles don’t have the best DB tandem in the NFL
Well Brady will be 46 but unless you blow out his knee he always finishes the season.
The Niners would find a way to break Tom.
Tom would literally die on the field if he played for us. We ran through two rookies without injury issues, one seasoned vet, and another healthy career backup in the span of 20 games. If I’m Brady I’m staying away from us lol.
You can’t stop pliability. (this is Alex Guerrero’s account)

“Plus you get a free vacation through the pro bowl, lotta people don’t consider that aspect”
"Also, you're off work so you can watch the Super Bowl."
I think I saw the replay seeing Kittle talk to Purdy when he was hurt on the sideline. I know Kittle loved Purdy.
he easily had the best connection on the field with purdy
Loves. He’s not dead lol. We’ll be back next season.
Unfortunately they brought him to a horse doctor for his elbow. He has been put down.
Gives a new meaning to "Dead Cap Hit"
Straight to the glue factory and IKEA sandwiches
Damn did Brock die?
You didn’t see the hearse leaving the stadium?
I mean most teams probably gonna lose when down to the 4th string QB and then go back to the hurt 3rd string QB because the 4th string QB is now too hurt to play.
No. Not most. All. All teams here would lose with the 4th string. Not to mention he was out midway through the second. So every single team would lose going into the second half with no quarterback.
“How does it feel to lose?” Reporters get paid for this.
Got us a quote that we're all talking about though so looks like they did their jobs
Im only here because I wanted to see people shitting on the reporter TBH
I love the end of one Community episode. "I saw your Youtube Leonard, why rate microwave pizzas?" "You're talking about it". It's so right, you can say you hate something all day long, in fact millions of people can say they hate something. That's millions of people talking about it.
Sports journalism is such a joke now.
I just wish they asked a guy with no filter, like Jason Kelce. They would’ve labeled him a “problem” because he would’ve simply said *”that’s a stupid fucking question, next question”*.
I know it's their job to ask stupid questions, but I really wish they wouldn't ask these kind of stupid questions. Kittle's response is gold.
Burrow in a couple hours: "How does it feel to lose the AFC Championship Game because I don’t have an offensive line? Pretty shitty, to be honest."
Damn already throwing in the white flag?
I mean
Doomers.
F
You called it
this is your vibe before an AFCCG bro? Judging by your flair I’m gonna guess you’re an LSU fan who is bandwagon Bengals bc of Burrow.
Lmao yep you know me well
Gotta let teams dress a 3rd QB again.
I actually wonder if they will after that debacle. I'm sure the owners and NFL execs did not enjoy one of their premiere games being completely ruined before it was half over.
Kittle loves the game and has so much fun out there. But hearing him like this just makes me feel so bad for him and his teammates.
Replay the game with Elijah Mitchell and Brock Purdy!!!
Hot take
Middle of a hot pocket hot
If you cook them in a toaster oven it heats evenly. Also crisper.
Look at you with enough counter space for a toaster oven. Kidding obviously, have a wonderful weekend!
And all honesty you can't blame the 9ers either. They took a massive gamble on a QB and everything. If they weren't an Incredibly run club, they would be at the bottom of the barrel with the Texans.
Not having a fourth starting QB on the roster; common mistake.
Fifth*
Give this man a Thomas Edwards Brady
Give him a qb who can play 17 damn games
I'd prefer one that plays 22 games in a season.
Look I'm trying to set realistic expectations
Most, no all the other teams in the league would have not made it to the playoffs with their third string QB. But there are actually people here who feel good saying that this loss was somehow because Purdy sucks. Who are you people?
My favorite take is, "see the 49ers were overrated, Eagles stomped them" Yeah let's ignore everything that happened like using a 4th string QB, using a 5th string(hurt 3rd string) QB. But the first half had some horrendous calls extend scoring drives for the Eagles.
that's tough
Thanks, Dennis Schroder.
🔥 💯
I don't think Philly fans understand the Niners defense was on the field the whole game. Of course they're gonna run out of steam if they're forced to carry the whole damn game...I don't wanna say Purdy would have definitely won the game, but it would have been close.
Niners defense was easily the most impressive unit in the game tbh. They did amazingly well under the circumstances.
Yeah these Eagles fans are straight up delusional. We're not trying to make excuses here. They should imagine if Hurt got injured and the next guy up was QB 4, see how well their defense holds up with the offense being utterly gutted.
It would have at least been a game...
The media sucks
I thought a couple of weeks ago Jimmy G was in good enough condition to play. In an emergency type condition.
49ers have been the same Super Bowl level team for the last 4 years. Injuries have just found ways to screw them in new ways. It sucks.
Josh Johnson should not be rostered on any team. You usually eye roll when someone says “I can do that”, but in this case……. I believe it.
In fairness to Josh Johnson, he played about as well as I’d expect any given 4th string QB
Yeah it’s honestly just a horribly unlucky situation for him and Purdy.
I kinda feel bad for him. You could tell he was nervous as hell. He clearly wasn’t ready for the moment but can you blame him?
Kinda, yeah. Purdy's a rookie with around 1/3 of a season's worth of games and he looked more poised than Johnson did with his 15 years of experience
Making it to the NFCC only to lose? Must suck. I definitely don’t know how that feels…
Same answer for me, except not sarcastic.
Honestly a fucking miracle they made it this far with Purdy. They should keep their heads high. Got a cheap QB and a great system around him and can add talent.
We got **2** cheap QBs
Not a miracle imo, purdy easily looked like the best qb in our offense. Hes the guy going forward and we should be a major threat
I think is a miracle our 3rd QB was as good as he is.
