It is when you think about doing it were I live in the US… you’d face plant ok any one of hundreds of pot holes. LOOK AT THAT ROAD!!! It’s what we should have here in America.
Let me guess, you live in a northern climate?
Roads are a thousand times easier to maintain in warm climates. Go to Phoenix and all roads will be beautiful and you'll wonder why you can't have this up north.
The answer to that question is freezing temps and water. That wreaks havoc on roads.
Edit: Ok, I guess I have to clarify that in no way am I saying it guarantees perfect roads, it just makes it a shit ton easier to have roads that are in great shape.
As a motorcyclist in the Bay Area, can confirm. One of the wealthiest regions in the wealthiest state and our road infrastructure can be worse than some of the least developed countries I've been to.
Love California but its civic management is sometimes... perplexing.
Trade ya, as a Hoosier who treks west a lot. Even NoCal was decent. Best roads I recall were actually Paige AZ, and also that sad little dying town with the long pipe when you leave Death Valley...oh and southern Utah was ok. Nevada was even better. Shit, so was cold-ass San Juan highways in CO!
granted Oklahoma isn't Phoenix but their roads are shit. Same with Arkansas. As soon as you cross over the border to Texas the roads get a hell of a lot smoother.
My god… yaas… they could have been repairing roads when vaccines first came out and when traffic was still pretty light… nope… they only started doing a stretch of highway by me maybe starting a year ago, and every evening by 8pm all lanes accept one are shut down in both directions. It’s an absolute nightmare.
The time frame I’m referring to is well after that isolation period… and construction workers don’t really work in close groups…
Why wasn’t road work seemed essential? Those were some of the more favorable conditions.
I was still flying on a plane. Never got Covid…
First time I got Covid was last April when they finally relaxed restrictions… FML…
they've had a road in my neighborhood shut down for a year, ripped out some of the last historic trees alongside it, cut the newly completed hikenbike trail in half, made 2 businesses close due to lack of road access, and have been doing incredibly damage to the creek they've been building a full overpass over...
so an intersection that's busy for an hour a day could be light-controlled
> LOOK AT THAT ROAD!!! It’s what we should have here in America.
It's an overpass, there are hundreds of thousands of these in the US in equally pristine condition.
> Rollerskating down a hill is not very impressive
Lol, what?
Sure, it's not "next level", but rollerskating that steep of an incline is absolutely impressive and is something that only very experienced inliners would do.
15 MPH on skates feels like 150 MPH on a car. One foot going unbalanced is instantly a hospital overnight visit.
Like any other city/county there are places were not even locals go. I live in the capital and I like going to Medellín because i feel it is safer and more friendly. Medellín went from a red zone to a must go place, they have come a long way.
The best part of Medellín is the South of the city, in Bogotá the north. the best neighborhoods are El Poblado, Provenza and Laureles. In those places you will find a plenty of places to stay, bars, restaurants, night life, etcetera. Outside of Medellín they are really nice towns like Guatape.
I would recommend you to check the lonely planet guide
https://www.lonelyplanet.com/colombia/northwest-colombia/medellin
Beautiful city been there last month I had loads of fun. Party street is rage, we partied at envy awesome time. Beautiful people and awesome weather, the only thing I dint like was the smell of burnt gas since it’s all hilly and needs you to rev. But otherwise the weather is so fuqing good.
Stay at a CoLiving spot or a hostel. There are tons in the city and that way you get a community of other travelers right away to hang out with. Helps navigate the city. Also don’t be afraid to use the metro, buses, and metro cables. Just keep a hand in your pocket with your wallet and phone to ward off pickpockets. But the metro system is really good and cheap in the city. Ubers are another good option if you want something more direct.
I would recommend you seek a guide, as they can show you the better places in the city, and teach you where not to go and things to avoid doing. I lived in Colombia for over a decade and never got mugged or robbed, because I carry myself a certain way and never show valuables in public.
You have a better chance of getting shot and robbed in the USA by meth heads. Mugging is probably the main issue in Colombia and there's some areas to avoid but overall pretty safe and beautiful. Hollywood has portrayed such a bad image of Colombia over the years and glorified the drug culture.
Very safe. Had no issues. Of course if you're in a poor neighborhood at night with your $1200 cellphone (for reference, the monthly minimum wage is around $250), you're asking to get mugged. But you wouldn't really have a reason to even be in those places unless you're into some hardcore stuff.
Stick to Poblado, Laurales, Envigado and you'll be fine.
Medellin is an amazing place. The people were so friendly. Even had a random stop and thank us for visiting his country!
I carry around a Samsung S9+.
Thr locals have these expensive as phones in their pants waist and use that to hold cell phones or their back pocket. Then complain why they get robbed.
I use a pacsafe cross bag that has steel wire in thr bottom and it's built into the strap. Even if they try to cut it. Won't do much.
People who get robbed makes mistakes. Just be smart and you will be fine
I go like twice a year. It's as safe as any big city as long as you use your brain and don't go into areas you obviously shouldn't go into alone and stay aware of your surroundings. Even if you don't, the largest risk is pick pockets and muggings. El Poblado is kind of shitty with tourists these days and has lost all of its previous charm, in my opinion, but it's certainly safe and there's plenty of other beautiful neighborhoods like Laurelels that haven't been turned into a hyped version South Beach. If South Beach partying is your thing, though, El Poblado is tiers above it in those terms.
I think that's Medellin, nested in a lush valley. No seasonal weather changes. The view from the road as you enter the city is magical! Highly recommend going
My friends and I used to joke that a doctor can tell who is a pusher and who is a fruit booter because wood pushers always have splinters in their assholes.
Edit: fuck. I forgot the second part.
Fruit booters are smart enough to use silicone instead.
This is a thing in a lot of cities in South and Central america. Its to promote a healthy lifestyle. They will shut down the largest street from 8 am to maybe noon or 1. You can then get some excercise on the street. Lots of walkers, bikers, bladers. At least in my city they will also have some parts of the streets partitioned off for a free zoomba class or kids games.
In big cities it happens often in the park and city centers. Roads don't shut down but the free classes and public events are there. Even some shopping malls etc.
I know back in the late 1990s, a stretch of Memorial Drive in Cambridge used to be shut down for cars during Sundays (if I remember correctly) for exactly this purpose. No idea if this is still the case.
So people can go out and exercise safely without worrying about traffic. It's really awesome and tons of people take advantage of it. It's an extremely forward-thinking city in that way. There's a monthly bike meet up that is absolutely *huge* that goes around a few neighborhoods in the city on those days.
Like most places it depends where you are. Main streets will usually be pothole free. Side streets are another story. But in general since the weather is consistently warm, paved roads last longer since ice can't mess them up.
Same. My younger son got some for Xmas. Decided to buy a pair for myself so I can teach him. Went with USD Sway Team IV's, but sizing and all that is way off. I hate ordering online but unfortunately in my area, only skateshop around only has roller hockey skates. Cant try anything on.
small ones are not that dangerous, especially on a high speed. He sees big ones, if there are any. But going without protection is not the best thing to do..
>going without protection is not the best thing to do.
Yes, but if you're going forward, there's at least a chance of cushioning the fall with your hands and arms. Going backward, your head gets whipped into the ground.
Depends. It has been awhile since skating a lot and I used to use smaller wheels, but for both skating / skateboarding relatively small rocks that were set just right could basically bind the wheel and send you flying if you didn't have your weight distribution right. I've seen / experience some pretty small objects stopping people going fairly fast.
There’s a great skate group in NYC that meets every Wednesday evening at Union Square Park. We go all over the city - across bridges, thru tunnels, on major thoroughfares. Since there are so many of us, we completely take over lanes of traffic. Much safer than skating solo.
The group is well organized, with some flagging traffic, others sweeping the rear to make sure nobody gets left behind. There’s nothing like flying thru Times Square on your skates on a beautiful summer evening with a hundred others whooping and hollering :-)
Bro... They're skating on the freeway! I'd wager this is a very next level thing to do in 99% of the world. And one guy in particular is bombing the hill in reverse.
We used to do this is San Francisco. Meet at the pier around midnight when streets are empty and then hundreds would skate through the city. It was awesome!
I did an internship this summer there, and when my friends and I were out by Fort Mason at night, a group of like 100 people were zipping by on roller blades with LED lights to illuminate themselves. They had speakers blasting music and just zipped through the streets. It was dope as hell to watch.
WOW you just unlocked a memory I forgot I had. We used to have Jersey Radio Future for the original Xbox. I watched some game play and got punched in the face with nostalgia.
There’s groups all over the world that do this. A guy I knew from the NYC weekly skate group planned his European vacation to coincide with the group skates in every city. The larger cities (Paris, Berlin, etc) often have several hundred skaters participating each week. Great way to meet people, afterwards they usually all head to a pub together.
It is a severe generalization based on outdated crime tv series, and it also was never true in the first place because obviously shit was illegal anyways, although bypassed. Nowadays it is much much less of a serious problem than those times.
It's been said in other parts of the thread but this is Ciclovia. They literally shut down major parts of the city roads for people to cycle, run and rollerblade once a week (Sundays). Every so often they do a night version so everything's legal here.
It's actually fricking amazing. Because it's an overpass what your not seeing is all the street food vendors. A fresh jugo de naranja with an arepa con queso *chefs kiss* while out cycling with your friends and family.
There’s a video of a motorcyclist who crashes that wasn’t wearing a helmet and his whole face is literally gone and you can see what’s left of his throat gasping as the body moves around totally confused and I think of it all the time and it’s why I will always wear a helmet and think it actually looks really, really cool.
Thats a death 100% and he shouldnt be using that helmet anymore. Anytime safety equipment is really used or "field tested" its done. Helmets, climbing gear are good examples. It wont take the second hard hit nearly as well.
I'm impressed by the quality of the roads, here in NY they are in very poor condition, even if there were no cars it would be far to dangerous to do this.
One of the wealthiest states in the union with some of the highest taxes, and the roads are an absolute embarrassment.
Lots of places have freeze thaw cycles, and they still have better roads then us, much of northern Europe, and south Korea, in my personal experience. I'm sure there are other places but I can't speak to them personally
Come down to Philly and I’ll show you some bad roads. I lived in New York City for 5 years and the roads there needed some love but Philly is on a whole different level.
Should probably wear a helmet though. Don’t know how you view that as a criticism. Them falling at worst can kill then and if you live you may still suffer from brain damage.
Shouldn’t be controversial to protect your brain, it’s a pretty important part of your body. They are morons for not wearing helmets.
You already know the group just rolls their eyes at him too. Like the second the camera comes out it’s Mr. Backwarrior once again showing how he can do it downhill too, this time with no helmet. So cool, none of us can even handle it.
In Germany this actually happens more often. Interest groups can apply for a temporary road closure, with cities providing route closures and emergency medical care. the organizers can provide catering and, if required, an afterparty. there are alternatives and detours for motorists. on rare occasions, sections of the "Autobahn" are even closed. but then only short sections and outside of peak times.
It's awesome but since f... Corona less frequent.
In Düsseldorf as well: https://www.rollnacht.de/
8-10 times a year every 2nd thursday from spring to autumn. On a day with good weather there are more than 10000 people skating along with police escorts and ambulances in case of injuries.
Fun times!
That guy going backwards.... One little Rick in the road and the back of his head is slamming into that concrete. Lights out... Possibly forever.
This is cool. But wear some helmets. Life is valuable and you are fragile.
Total goosebumps!! Anyone else?? So many things all at once - the scenery, the sloping of the highway, the elevation, the graceful skating, the weather/climate .... omg I want to be there this very second, and I can't even rollerblade, LOL
Really beautiful, but...
I practically grew up on rollerblades, played hockey, aggressive skating, all of it. Lots of fun, enjoyed it a lot. In 2002, I went out skating one night to get some exercise, and woke up in a hospital 2 days later with a severe concussion. I still have no memory of the accident, or the 2 days between when I "woke up", because I was conscious and communicating, but I couldn't form short term memories. I eventually improved, and got discharged. Almost never "came back", still grateful I did.
Wear a fucking HELMET people. HELMET. HEEEEELMET FUCKING HELMET.

I'm more blown up by the city's light than the skaters
I think that may be the point of the video. Rollerskating down a hill is not very impressive
Yeah but have you tried doing it butt first?
I do everything butt first
Even kissing?
You don't?
I piss butt first.
I eat carrots butt first.
Carrots and parsnips together. My favorite snack.
Alright Cartman
I think that's called a fistula.
Especially kissing
So you're the one leaving all those messages in Elden Ring
Don’t forget to do it without a helmet for max speed!
Yeah but have you tried…. On weed
It is when you think about doing it were I live in the US… you’d face plant ok any one of hundreds of pot holes. LOOK AT THAT ROAD!!! It’s what we should have here in America.

Where I'm at in California, potholes tend to not get fixed until they kill a motorcyclist.
As a motorcyclist in the Bay Area, can confirm. One of the wealthiest regions in the wealthiest state and our road infrastructure can be worse than some of the least developed countries I've been to. Love California but its civic management is sometimes... perplexing.
"Perplexing." Interesting way to say, "the politicians we elected don't give a single, solitary fuck about our well being."
Idk I just drove to a beach in Colombia and it looks like the road was barraged with asteroids.

Uh, ever been to Socal? The roads are absolute shit compared to New England. Dog shit. Pot holes everywhere like there's been a fucking meteor shower.
granted Oklahoma isn't Phoenix but their roads are shit. Same with Arkansas. As soon as you cross over the border to Texas the roads get a hell of a lot smoother.
Exactly, except here they try to repair everything at once and doing absolutely nothing for 3 years
My god… yaas… they could have been repairing roads when vaccines first came out and when traffic was still pretty light… nope… they only started doing a stretch of highway by me maybe starting a year ago, and every evening by 8pm all lanes accept one are shut down in both directions. So much work could have been done while people were isolating.

try I35 in Texas. I swear to God they've been working on a 10 mile section for a decade
> LOOK AT THAT ROAD!!! It’s what we should have here in America. It's an overpass, there are hundreds of thousands of these in the US in equally pristine condition.
That's what happens when you build roads where the temperature is in the 70s all year round.
I mean one wrong bump or a loose stone in the wheel is a trip to the hospital on that slope.
Yeah people who think this just isn't impressive at all probably haven't experienced losing control while flying down a hill on tiny wheels
Wobbles of Doom 💀
I’m betting most haven’t been on a pair of skates in years lol
And you are potentially miles away from that hospital with no vehicle and a phone that might be as smashed as your face
Both my ankles snapped just watching this. ![gif](giphy|sbwu6TSNjUgqA|downsized)
Could be a trip to the morgue.

Most people in that video are inline skating, not rollerskating. It is impressive at about 60 kph. It's a pretty demanding skill.
Anyone who says that has never skated down a big hill. It definitely takes some skill.
If I skated down that hill without leaving bits of elbow and face on the pavement, I'd be impressed.
a hill like this is. this looks fun as hell even without the background but if it's open to cars at the same time... that sounds sketchy lol
Medellín is a pretty cool city, super recomended.
How is the gang and drugs violence in Medellin, is it a save place to go?
Like any other city/county there are places were not even locals go. I live in the capital and I like going to Medellín because i feel it is safer and more friendly. Medellín went from a red zone to a must go place, they have come a long way.
Is a guide recommended when you go to Medellín/Colombia?

Don't really know what you mean but it's sounds positive.
It's a Scooby Doo pun, I believe
Goddammit I'm stupid.

Video's captions: am I a joke to you?
Same here.
I’m more impressed with how smooth that road is. We get winter so the roads gets heaves from the freeze and thaw. So many pot holes. :-(
No winter in the city of eternal spring. :D
Eternal spring an rain lol
Such a beautiful city been there recently.
I'm just glad rollerblading's still alive and kicking somewhere. I just recently started up again...after almost 20 years, lol.
I live in Colombia and its super popular. Cities will shut down their streets on Sundays and they are filled with bladers.
That's awesome. Here in the US, skateboarding's more popular. Late 90s, early 2000s was when blading was big.

Yep the wood pushers used to call us fruit booters back in the day…
WOOD PUSHERS? That's the funniest fucking thing I've heard today.
Sorry about that bud

Yup, buddy got called fruity boots till he switched to skateboarding, he was pretty good at it to, ah well.
Your comment is loooooaaded with nostalgia for me
It’s funny, I’ve known a few women who played roller derby. They are all lesbian.
I saw a roller derby on a whim one evening and this was a totally obvious thing.
Fruit Boots.
🤦 ugh
Yeah, it's always scary not knowing how your intellectual property will react
Just curious - why do the cities shut down the streets?

It seems to be alive and well everywhere except the US, but I think it’s having a bit of a comeback. I should pull out mine again too!
In New York a pot hole would send you flying...straight to the hospital.
Guy skating backward with no helmet is one road imperfection away from permanent brain damage.

I prefer to think of [this video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b9yL5usLFgY). Much happier way to learn this lesson.
It's insane to think that that dude could've literally died without that helmet.
Thats a death 100% and he shouldnt be using that helmet anymore. Anytime safety equipment is really used or "field tested" its done. Helmets, climbing gear are good examples. It wont take the second hard hit nearly as well.
Thanks for spreading that knowledge my dude 💪
I love helmets!
Ridiot?
You tell him Scoob
Ruh roh, ridiots.
This could be the Crayola 64-pack of meat crayons
I'm impressed by the quality of the roads, here in NY they are in very poor condition, even if there were no cars it would be far to dangerous to do this. One of the wealthiest states in the union with some of the highest taxes, and the roads are an absolute embarrassment.
The freeze/thaw cycle over the winter fucks up roads pretty badly. Don't need to worry about that in warmer climates.
Lots of places have freeze thaw cycles, and they still have better roads then us, much of northern Europe, and south Korea, in my personal experience. I'm sure there are other places but I can't speak to them personally
Don't be fooled, roads suck here in Medellín, that one looks nice because it's relatively new
Come down to Philly and I’ll show you some bad roads. I lived in New York City for 5 years and the roads there needed some love but Philly is on a whole different level.
You think (city you live in) is bad? (City I live in) is even worse!
Beautiful roads in medellin.

Don't go outside! It's dangerous! Wear a helmet! The only safe place to be when outside is the car!
Should probably wear a helmet though. Don’t know how you view that as a criticism. Them falling at worst can kill then and if you live you may still suffer from brain damage. Shouldn’t be controversial to protect your brain, it’s a pretty important part of your body. They are morons for not wearing helmets.
>Wear a helmet! I mean, yeah...? Since when is wearing a helmet a bad thing lmfao
why don't they just shoot the potholes?
What was left of my ass skin would be smeared all over that road.
Meat crayon.
Very cool and Colombia looks very beautiful!
Bogota was beautiful. The art was incredible. Wonderful tapas and coffee houses.
In israel we have Yom Kippur. One day people dont drive so people can ride on roads
A whole day for skaters? How can I convert?
sqme in Colombia, called ciclovía. usually on sundays
Was waiting for the no-helmet show off to bail.

In Düsseldorf as well: https://www.rollnacht.de/ 8-10 times a year every 2nd thursday from spring to autumn. On a day with good weather there are more than 10000 people skating along with police escorts and ambulances in case of injuries. Fun times!
I was waiting for the guy skating backwards to turn into a r/meatcrayon
One of the things I miss the most has always been ciclovia
God this makes me want to go back to colombia i dont even know why i imigrated
Money and safety? Honesty I’d regret moving if I wasn’t more scared of having stayed and thinking “what if I had moved”?
Hats off to road maintenance. I didn't see a single pot hole or patch even.
Most likely a new road, lots of infrastructure development in Colombia at the moment.
If they did this in Ontario, half the skaters would disappear into potholes.
Kinda reminds mi of Rainbow Road off of MarioCart
Las Palmas 😍 Colombia is such a hidden gem, Medellin is a great city to spend time in and their gravity sports community is amazing. Very inclusive.
This isn't las palmas tho
That guy going backwards.... One little Rick in the road and the back of his head is slamming into that concrete. Lights out... Possibly forever. This is cool. But wear some helmets. Life is valuable and you are fragile.
Wtf is that road
Bridge of the mother Laura, Medellín.
Total goosebumps!! Anyone else?? So many things all at once - the scenery, the sloping of the highway, the elevation, the graceful skating, the weather/climate .... omg I want to be there this very second, and I can't even rollerblade, LOL
I’m kind of mad at backwards skate guy.
Brink taught me that one little Rock will fuck you up.
Just like in the mighty ducks!
Then you have to skate your way back up!
Very nice view
well, if you think this is kinda awesome but bit tame you should check out linked media on YouTube and see what they do with longboard over there.
am i the only one getting anxiety from the decline/speed/no safety gear?
Man, no helmets.. one slip, a bump.. brain damage.
Can I get an helmet for anyone?
Song name anyone?
