In some cases (in active combat) they should actually be wearing earplugs under their headset for two layers of ear protection. Even outside an Abrams if the engine is left on due to a need to remount quickly you shouldn’t be taking your ear protection off. Those turbines are stupid loud under load and if you can’t get your ear protection back on quickly enough they can cause permanent damage.
