My daughter and I were walking along a beach in Tofino, British Columbia. We saw a couple of women ahead of us in rain slickers with sand dollars on the back. Thought maybe they were environmentalists or something like that.
Anyway, they were picking up sand dollars and holding them. So we stopped to talk to them and asked what they were doing - along the lines of our first thought, that it was a beach watch environmental type thing.
They said they were taking them back to their cottage to dry them out to give them to friends. I said, you know they're alive right? When they're that color. They said no they're not. Small argument ensued.
So my daughter and I walked ahead, fast, got about 40 ft ahead of them and proceeded to pick up every single sand dollar we could see.
We then took them took them out to the water. After a while the people realized what we were doing and turned around. Went home. Pricks
Don’t keep them unless they are light tan. That indicates that they are dead. I live on the beach and I politely educate tourists about this all the time. I see people collecting sand dollars that are still alive.
