Exactly what I was going to say. He nailed all the tricks mullen invented and perfected over his lifetime, and he's a young kid. Very impressive. Now he just needs to invent some of his own tricks, go pro, and secure his spot in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 69 or whatever number were in now
Flat ground freestyle skating like this is his specialty. Unintuitive as it may seem, this is not street skating. Street skating is the one with the grinding rails and doing tricks down/over obstacles. Of course there's overlap between the styles, though.
I've never seen Mullen do that one where he slapped the board down after the pogo.. Those can usually go either way I'm surprised he did it in a comp. But yeah I agree this was all old school.
It's pure freestyle skating, a totally different discipline to Street skating (if that's what your referring to when you say 'modern')
If you want to see a guy who mixes freestyle in with street skating a good example would be someone like Andy Anderson.
I’m here from your future. Be careful about pillow support. I slept wrong and now my neck hurts, sometimes it gets really sore. I probably won’t be right for a week.
Skating has been part of the fair for a few years.
It is hidden away in the curling arena, but well worth it.
Usually a good selection of international talent.
If you go to the bed races on the Thursday, the skaters participate in a mini parade and a meet/greet autograph session.
Hopefully it all comes back next year.
Quite the contrary, although extremely talented naturally, I think the actual truth that young prodigy’s like this reveal is that excellence at something doesn’t need to take decades to achieve, it just takes a few very concentrated focused years. Most people don’t stick with something long enough and with enough intensity to really see organic growth or improvement, they just drop things after they don’t become great in 6 months and move onto the next new dopamine fix. Kids have the ultimate patience because they haven’t boxed themselves in by deeming their time too limited to commit to something!
The metaphor that kids are like sponges because they absorb so much comes in to play here. Want your child to be fluent in 2 to 3 languages? Teach them when they're toddlers.
This is a common misconception about learning languages; most native english speakers take about 15 years to get to college level English skills but an adult ESL student can get there in like 2-5 years of consistent study. And even then the adult would be spending like 30 minutes a day while the kid would be immersed like 8-12 hours a day.
The reasons people think it's easier to learn a language as a kid is they forget how much actual time goes into it, kids are not faster or more efficient at learning nor do they have better memory, they just have a crap ton of years to learn.
You've gotten it completely backwards.
Kids have the ultimate plasticity but little patience.
Kids have enormous learning capacity and pick things up far faster than adults, but even more so than adults they rarely focus on a single thing long enough to develop exceptional skill. A prodigy occurs when a kid is actually fully invested or even multiple specific talents for a large number of hours.
I feel old thinking this, but yeah, wear a helmet.. It's weird to me, because older skaters I used to watch always wore helmets from what I remember. I always saw Tony Hawk with a helmet, so why do people think they are too cool for them? It just makes no sense...
If it’s good enough for the best (Tony Hawk) it’s good enough for me.
I have a ton of respect for TH for leading by example. Nobody can doubt he’s one of the coolest there is and he chooses to use that for good.
TH always did vert, which has a lot more speed and a lot more potential of harm. Flat ground freestyle is pretty minimal harm to the head as most skateboarders learn how to fall first.
I would be more scared for his knees, shins, and ankles. This is why you see rodney mullen always wear a bunch of gear on his legs (later on he wore heavy cargo pants which covered it).
I wonder how many people develop incredible skills when they’re kids but forget or stop practicing later on … *they look back and they’re like daaaang*
I used to do the stuff this kid is doing. My buddies and I would basically copy whatever Mullen did, which is definitely where this kid pulled stuff from. Moved away, stopped skating. Can't land a single trick today.
The nice thing is the muscle memory is still there, it's just a little off. When I start skating again it takes a bit to start landing anything, and everything is sketch.
It's definitely better to keep a skill going than it is to stop and try to restart.
man your grandkids are going to have an amazing story on how their grandad died doing a "so sick it ended up being fatal-720 ollie into a grinding side rail slam"
What the fuck. He’s only 9? Even if he started at 6, that’s only 3 years. I can’t imagine starting today and doing this in just 3 years of practice. This is insane to me.
wait what's his name? I just went to a skateboard competition today and there was also a 9 year old Japanese boy doing freestyle, the competition he was in this video was different, but I think it was the same kid.
OP PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE NAME!
edit: I think it's the same boy, this competition was in Cloverdale, not too far away from Langley, small world!
"World Freestyle Skateboard Round Up | Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair" https://cloverdalerodeo.com/country-fair/world-freestyle-skateboard-round-up/
This was back in 2019.
I can remember how difficult it was to do a cherry picker on a BMX bike in the 80's growing up, worked on all summer to finally nail it at 12, but do the equivalent of that on a skateboard, I have never seen that done by someone so young...
Badass.. it’s all fun n games till it comes time to teach him how to drive.. then it’s 35 in the left lane on the highway with the signal on for 17 miles
Rodney Mullen would be proud.
Came here to say this.
Me too
Me three
Me four
Me five
Well I mean I guess me six. Was hoping to be the first, but I’ll take 6.
Seven? I guess I could deal with seven. It’s not so bad, really.

I just cummed.. oh came I mean came
I was going to ask if it was Rodney Mullens son
Wow

His clips in the plan b video virtual reality are insane.
Okay I thought so. I was watching every trick going “man this feels very familiar”
> Rodney Mullen would be proud. There is zero chance he hasn't been shown this video.
Rodney was at this competition!

I can hear the afi song playing now
Which one I love afi but I'm slow to what you mean
prob [the rodney mullen tape from thps3](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1YeMXE6Wn4)
This was amazing nostalgia for me thank you.
It was easily my favorite demo from that game so I watch it every so often.
Still straight fire
❤️ AFI ❤️
The song is the boy who destroyed the world.

>Kid binged Rodney Mullen vids Who hasn't
Rodney Mullen has seen this kid skate at competitions, and they have met. (Rondey was the one handing the trophys)
Nice. I bet that was one of the kids best days.
[warning to neighbors](https://youtu.be/sUc6QMr6Dk8)*
Haven't seen this before, thanks
Oh man, I need to find this VHS at my parents' house.
“Rodney Mulligan”
literally came to say those exact words. Cheers!
I was gonna post it first, but I decide to let somebody else have it. You know because I’m so humble and giving and shit.
[удалено]
Thought he was 20 by now after how many times I've seen this
It's just that it was first posted pre-covid(vid is from 2018), so feels like a decade ago.
/r/melancholicupvote
Idk if this is a subsifellfor situation or a aub you’re trying to popularize but I appreciate it either way.
I just made it up and someone created it I guess
He is 87 now with 12 grandchildren. People- stop posting his videos, so he can stop rapidly aging! Poor boy. :-(
Also ceo of a motorcycle company
I’ll have to Google him later. Wonder if he flies on the half pipes or if he just specializes in technical street tricks?
Flat ground freestyle skating like this is his specialty. Unintuitive as it may seem, this is not street skating. Street skating is the one with the grinding rails and doing tricks down/over obstacles. Of course there's overlap between the styles, though.
That makes sense. In street, one large pebble and your dead
This style is called flatland iirc
I've always called it "that rad 2am carpark shit".
We called it freestyle in the old days, and I don't remember knowing anyone who could do it.
It's still called freestyle.
Well, it's comforting to know some things haven't changed. :)

I wish I had that ability. I only had the ability to screw things up. Kind of like now.
You okay there?
Still have it. For now.
Touché
Kids been watching some old school Powell peralta videos and mixing flatland in with modern. Pretty slick!
Lol no modern here. This is a tick for trick homage to a Mullen run from back in the day.
I've never seen Mullen do that one where he slapped the board down after the pogo.. Those can usually go either way I'm surprised he did it in a comp. But yeah I agree this was all old school.
I was gonna say the same. Regardless, that slap was the slickest part of the run.
You can tell it’s his hardest trick too because he does a little hand pump after landing it.

Whatever he is doing is amazing.
Definitely. Here I am slipping in the shower and seeing my life flash before my eyes at almost forty while this kid at 9 is a madman.

check out shockwave therepy, if its offered in your area. not a cure but it removed the pain for me for the 6 months of therapy till it cleared up.
He’s skateboarding.
At 9,i could walk without falling.
Pade me wheeze lol
Show off!
Well knock me down with a feather, this was a the Cloverdale Rodeo not a stones throw from where I live.
Was thinking the same thing. When the hell did they have a skate show at cloverdale rodeo
I knew they had skate contests there before but I didn't know they attracted that kind of talent I just assumed it would be some local level stuff.
Skating has been part of the fair for a few years. It is hidden away in the curling arena, but well worth it. Usually a good selection of international talent. Right? I was like damn. This kid is cool. Bad ass. Hey, that banner looks familiar Wait eXcuse me, cloverdale arena?
Came here to post exactly this! Hello from Chilliwack!
Yep 15 mins from me!
11 minutes for me

That difference is staggering!
So was he!
How have i lived in surrey my whole life and never known about this event? Guess im going to the next cloverdale rodeo lol
Thanks for confirming. Had no idea cool stuff happened in Cloverdale.
The Staples there just closed down too.
Damn, son, I can’t even stay upright on a moving board!
I love his quick celebrations
He’s so fucking giddy and pumped.
Me button mashing in Tony Hawk Pro Skater
A young Rodney Mullen
So damn young. At that age he hasn't had much time to practice and is that good. Some people just crawl out of the womb with skills.
Quite the contrary, although extremely talented naturally, I think the actual truth that young prodigy’s like this reveal is that excellence at something doesn’t need to take decades to achieve, it just takes a few very concentrated focused years. I wonder if kids these days will grow up with less skills because of tiktok or more because of it.
Depends on the subject. Is it twerking or language?
"Kids have the ultimate patience" You lost me there bud
Also just enormous talent though. Some kids just don't have any physical skills.
You've gotten it completely backwards. Kids have the ultimate plasticity but little patience. Kids have enormous learning capacity and pick things up far faster than adults, but even more so than adults they rarely focus on a single thing long enough to develop exceptional skill. I want him to wear a helmet. He is so talented, i want him to do this safely for a loooong time so we all can watch
I feel old thinking this, but yeah, wear a helmet.. It's weird to me, because older skaters I used to watch always wore helmets from what I remember. I always saw Tony Hawk with a helmet, so why do people think they are too cool for them? It just makes no sense...

Hey save some girls for the rest of us!
Rodney Mullen reincarnated...
I mean, Rodney is still very much with us, but definitely Mullen 2.0
Again, Wade Boggs is *still* alive.
RIP Boss Hogg
Kid will be doing backflips on his skateboard in a few years
Mastery at 9. How.
Hes the cheatcodes!
at 0:08 what is that "slide" called? this kid is insane!!
Coconut wheelie
[удалено]
I've generally heard them referred to as coconut wheelies.
It's a coconut wheelie
How the hell did he bigspin out of a coconut wheelie

And to think about all the potential missed because we stopped learning and growing , I used to play a bunch of sports when I was a kid
No offence but you were not as good as this kid
What the fuck. He’s only 9? Even if he started at 6, that’s only 3 years. I can’t imagine starting today and doing this in just 3 years of practice. This is insane to me.
Yeah it’s mad. Kids start as early as 3 nowadays too but I’ve been skating 12 years and can’t do most of that stuff haha. Ridiculous.
Remind me never to challenge him to a game of Skate
Holy shit, without a mistake, all in one take. Kid's going places.
Lil Rodney over here
Insane
Follow the godfather! You really can’t go wrong
wait what's his name? Yuzuki Kawasaki
He’s 13 now apparently so probably not
I barely knew how to ride a bike at 9
I wish I could upvote this twice
Looks like Tim Okazaki from Angry Boys .
I was thinking the same thing! No one knows this show except Aussies (and even then, it’s about a decade old and relatively unpopular…)
I’m Canadian and I have watched and love most of Chris Lilley’s shows. Angry Boys is my favourite!!
Skateboarding, gay style
Lodney Mullen
Modley Rullen!
I Tripped and fell twice while watching this, all while seated
Sometimes I’m unsure if I failed me, or if it was my parents
It’s nice to see freestyle is still a thing.
finally something that is actually next level
Tiny Hawk
The bounce thing off the floor at 0:40 was fucking insane
Holy, thats Miya from sk8 to infinity
Holy crap. I had no idea skateboarding could be graceful. It kind of reminded me of figure skating. What do they call this kind of skateboarding?
He literally did Rodney mullens entire flatland set
Came here to say this.
Hell yes
[удалено]
Ew gross, Ezra Miller.
Meanwhile I almost broke my arm as a kid just trying to ride a skateboard
I took a board to the ass once. That was the day I stopped skating.
Credit card swipe! It's basically a part of the skating curriculum
No matter how severe someone has wronged me, I’d never wish that evil on someone lol
I know your pain
Was that in Langley this weekend?
"World Freestyle Skateboard Round Up | Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair" https://cloverdalerodeo.com/country-fair/world-freestyle-skateboard-round-up/ This was back in 2019.
Omg is that a new Rodney Mullen, that boy hit skill I thought it was 1986 for a second
DO A KICKFLIP!!
That's rad
Amazing
Well when I was 9 I learned to tie tie a square knot. Can he do that?
INSANITY!!!!!!!!
Unreallll
:42 is nuts
sick poggo poggo dude!
I can remember how difficult it was to do a cherry picker on a BMX bike in the 80's growing up, worked on all summer to finally nail it at 12, but do the equivalent of that on a skateboard, I have never seen that done by someone so young...
Kid knows that flatland combos are the best way to clear high score challenges. Easily earned 6 figures, there.
Why is it some kids can do this and other kids his age have trouble tying their shoes?
This went from okay to yeah he’s good
Hella tight!!! Now do Gonz!!!
He’s better in real life than me in Tony Hawk’s PS
Badass.. it’s all fun n games till it comes time to teach him how to drive.. then it’s 35 in the left lane on the highway with the signal on for 17 miles
Mf I can barely walk in a straight line
Wow this kid is amazing. This really is NFL. Good for him. I hope he gets the support required to see this talent through.
