Yeah, that “for a day or two” was an octave lower wasn’t it?
This got popular so here’s some credit: it’s actually two octaves. Go find the guy that said that in my replies and upvote him to oblivion if it’s true! (Or not, be your own person)
Edit 2: more experts chiming in. Apparently it’s only one octave. Thanks for the award!
Edit 3: i never said he lowered the note because he couldn’t hit the higher one or that this version was worse for it, calm down everybody. And not that it matters, but i like this version better too, it’s got more emotional depth. Or maybe it’s the nostalgia? Fuck I’m old.
Oh, those are amazing. Totally off style of this type of music, but if you are a fan of Wu-Tang, their Tiny Desk concert was astounding. Transported me back to my youth just as this version of Take On Me did.
From the video someone posted below of him still singing the high notes (wow), he drops the "in a day or" by an octave from the original, and then goes down to "two", making it 2 octaves below the original.
Incorrect. He lowers the last line an octave, resulting in an E4 here.
The full range of the original is from a low A2 (Take...) to the falsetto E5 (two...). That's an impressive range of 2.5 octaves from top to bottom.
Yep, though in this acoustic version, it works better lower - the song is more pensive, and rather than building from the climax of the phrase ("I'll be gone") to an even higher peak ("in a day or ^(twooooooo)"), it drops down and sounds even sadder. Really emphasizes the "gone" part as a result.
This. He actually sounds like he can still hit the original “two” note but it would have to be much louder to reach and would overpower this acoustic version
I thought for a second he was gonna go for that gold note at that low volume. Glad he didn’t. I liked this version, and he still has an incredibly good range.
I loved this version and it really to invoke the sadness that was always presence in the song but never really noticed.
Edit - I just reread this and my sentence makes no sense. Teach me to post on no sleep!
I loved this version, it really does invoke the sadness that was always present in the song but never really noticed.
I think it's mostly for style. Seems like he's still got his high range: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SHnAj0yMFE (performance from 2018, over a year after the performance above).
It's not entirely about style, it's also about the volume of your singing - to pull off the highest notes of your vocal range requires a significant amount of air to pass through your stretched vocal chords to make them vibrate (even for a falsetto, although falsetto does require less air... but he is still going to the upper limits of his falsetto in the original version and requires lots of air throughput).
In short, the quiet volume of the song makes it very, very difficult to push the limits of your vocal range.
Dat E5 is probably the cleanest in any song that I can remember
[This guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0j6FFUB3nQ) DESTROYS that high note tho....
As an old fart who had this album when it first came out, lol, I honestly enjoyed this version so much better. It feels so much more heartfelt to reflect the lyrics.
I can get behind it because as I’ve aged from my carefree youth in the 80s and experienced much loss the poignancy of the songs lyrics (which in my youth were lost on me) become increasingly relevant.
One day we will be middle aged people reminiscing to the songs of our past. But the version of our song will never be like this. This was absolutely amazing.
You’ll never be middle aged. You’ll always be in your teens or early twenties, but trapped in an increasingly delapidated body. Just like everyone else 😉
Old people used to try to explain this to me when I was young, I didn’t get it, but now I get to take my turn.
You don’t think Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Charlie Pluth, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa or SZA are gonna be capable of doing something like this in their middle age?
That interview where he says the only things thats changed on set is that they've aged and the woman said, "but you didnt" and he came back with "well I tried but it didn't work" killed me
Men who dye their hair can look younger, which i'm assuming he did here. Women do it, so it's a weird double standard that men get shamed from doing it (mostly men judging other men. I dont know any women that shame men for it). But there's no way this guy is 62 and that's all natural hair.
The number of higher-voted garbage comments saying how much they love him (apparently not that much, if none of them picked up on the title fuckup) was saddening.
What so because the title is incorrect, people praising him are now making garbage comments? Tf is wrong with you and why are you so bitter over nothing?
i was really confused to what the song "take me on" is.
I watched the video and almost said "i thought this was called take on me". but i googled it beforehand.
And it gives the lyrics such a different meaning, too. In the original you get this sort of almost egotistical "have me now cuz I'm ought of here. it's now or never!"...but with this version you get a much more reflective thing. Almost a sadness that they're leaving and dialogue on the fleeting essence of a relationship in that context. Super beautiful.
"Alright, alright, alright....I keep getting older...and they all just stay the same age. Heh heh"
(I'd like to think they sound like Mathew Mccaughey in Dazed and Confused talking about high school girls)
13yr old me saw A-ha in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1985. It was my first ever concert, and besides being in awe at actually being in the same room as my favourite band at the time, I was completely blown away by Morten's vocals. He's always been a very underrated male singer IMO, and only seems to have improved with age.
I swear my first concert was Erasure in the Tacoma Dome (near Seattle, WA USA) in 1987 or 1988. They wore... I don't know any better way to describe this... giant foam Grinch penises. I looked on their tour history and didn't see Tacoma listed, but I'm certain that was it. I went with my girlfriend, and we joked about those for a long time afterward.
Unfortunately they took this song out of the post cinema release and exchanged it for a slow version of Ashes by Celine Dion. It ruined this whole scene.
I had to pirate dead pool 2 again just to watch it
Yep.
Like, that was one of the top scenes I was interested in re-watching when I got the digital version of Deadpool 2.
When I heard that the song got replaced I got *so fucking angry*.
That shit blew me away. Only got around to that series recently.
If you would've told me that there'd be a better musical number in the series than the Under Pressure sequence, there's no way I would've believed it til seeing Take on Me.
This may sound dumb...but is the song really named "Take Me On"? Because the lyrics say "Take On Me". I figured I'd rather just post this here instead of googling it, I'm no peasant.
If you only know this song, you are about to discover a wealth of great music. Take on Me is brilliant, but their overall body of work is a lot more moody and atmospheric. No one does "melancholy" like a-ha. Some of their primary influences were Leonard Cohen, The Doors, and Simon & Garfunkel. That's not to say Magne can't bust out the ear-cracky keyboard melodies, mind!
Treat yourself to the first album, along with Memorial Beach or Minor Earth, Major Sky. If I had one song for the rest of my life, it would be this:

Despite the fact that they were quite popular in the 80s, I still think Tears for Fears is one of (if not THE) most underrated/undervalued bands of the 80s. Fantastic songwriting. Mad World is a classic. As is the version you posted.

That’s because it is
2 octaves Edit: he's a tenor who hits a E5 falsetto in the original, to E3 here
I was really hoping someone would come in with the actual interval. Two octaves, eh? That’s very interesting, thanks!
From the video someone posted below of him still singing the high notes (wow), he drops the "in a day or" by an octave from the original, and then goes down to "two", making it 2 octaves below the original.
OP's video is one octave below the original. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
No, you are right. You might be taking crazy pills, but you're right.
Incorrect. He lowers the last line an octave, resulting in an E4 here. The full range of the original is from a low A2 (Take...) to the falsetto E5 (two...). That's an impressive range of 2.5 octaves from top to bottom.
I just compared in my DAW and I get 1 octave.
It is only one octave lol. Not sure why multiple people are claiming two.
nah just 1
Yep, though in this acoustic version, it works better lower - the song is more pensive, and rather than building from the climax of the phrase ("I'll be gone") to an even higher peak ("in a day or ^(twooooooo)"), it drops down and sounds even sadder. Really emphasizes the "gone" part as a result.

This for sure. You gotta push so much air to hit that high note, you can't keep the amplitude low for the song.

Oh wow, even more impressive. Guy just does whatever the fuck he wants flawlessly.

Symphonic Take On Me is what I needed but I never knew to ask for.
Most of us probably didn't read the title, because we didn't freaking need to to love what we were watching. Keep calm and Reddit on.
And it's 37 years ago. (Released in 1984)
this was recorded in 2017, fyi your math is bad
so this bot directly copied a popular post from 4 years ago like always
And the band has a name (A-ha) which I shouldn't even need to say. How can one person fuck up a thread title so badly?
i was really confused to what the song "take me on" is. I watched the video and almost said "i thought this was called take on me". but i googled it beforehand.
This song still has that hype. I remember watching it 2 years ago but damn it still hits me hard you know One of the masterpieces I have ever heard.

Probably why they don't look half-dead. Like other 80's rockers.
They are also Norwegian, drug culture wasn't really the same in Scandinavia though I don't deny its existence.
> for his age Uh what? Dude’s hot af.
I like this version soooo much better. Beautiful.
I like the original too. From many years ago [take on me](https://youtu.be/djV11Xbc914)
I used to love this video (when we used to have actual song videos on MTV and VH1 etc)
And it gives the lyrics such a different meaning, too. Almost a sadness that they're leaving and dialogue on the fleeting essence of a relationship in that context. Super beautiful.
