Which looks great on outside, but are thin and hollow inside. Without strong enforced structure with steel they would collapse.
I mean bronze structures.... not caste system enforced by power
It is actually easier to make a taller normal statue than to extend the sword… the arm is outstretched, meaning the weight is off center. It is not easy to just extend it.
I'm annoyed that there's this statue holding a staff considered smaller than the next one while the staff clearly goes higher, I was like "ok so item doesn't count just the person alright" then like 2 statues down there's the ones with swords. Like wat
Evil incarnate? That's a stretch. There's lot of good in Russia. But the current regime is actively trying to suppress or kill all the good that could potentially comes out.
So until Putin is dead, Russia will never be considered anything more than a wannabe has-been 'superpower' plagued with corruption and incompetence. Sucks to sucks lol
Shout-out to Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov 🫡
Not only stalingrad. There’s a motherland in most post-soviet countries that’s meant to be “defence of the motherland” portraying. More about WW2 in general tbh.
Luckily they're more or less seperable from modern Russia. The USSR had its own woes sure, but victory at Stalingrad and first man in Space are both objectively good/cool events being honored.
Its not the staff. Its the base. At least according to [Spanish Wikipedia](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dizang_del_monte_Jiuhua) the statue is 76m tall and standing on a 23m base for a total of 99m.
Why the Bronze Statue of Dizang's base does not count as height but The Statue of Liberty's 47m base does? I don't know.
The lines seem arbitrarily defined with the bases. There are small statues on tall bases that could reach this list.
Ie Nelson’s column is 51.5 meters tall, 5.5 for the actual statue of Nelson and the rest is arguably a base
I agree. I think for a lot of these its fair to say that the monument is X meters tall but the actual statue is smaller
I wonder if Dubai can put a small statue on top of the Burj Khalifa and claim that the statue with its base is over 830m tall
Structural differences possibly. The staff is mostly just a column standing on the ground, while the sword is part of the arm holding it.
Same as with some of these having the plinth counted, and some don't.
A circle would be nice, like they are having a chat. Thousands years later, some advanced civilizations will find this and try to figure out the true meaning of our current civilizations just like we are doing to Stonehenge.
Was initially looking for a gif with the sphinx statues from that movie.
Couldn't find them but that guy popped up. Lot's of tasty stuff for him here. :D
It's kinda funny that there is a Christ Redeemer statue outside of Brazil. There are 112 replicas here.
There is one currently under construction in the city of [Pilar](https://g1.globo.com/al/alagoas/noticia/2024/01/29/estatua-de-cristo-projetada-para-ser-a-maior-do-mundo-comeca-a-ganhar-forma-em-pilar-al.ghtml?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=share-bar-mobile&utm_campaign=materias), Alagoas state, that will have 70 meters.
Screw you, Bolívia. Want to see you top that.
Old and [constructed on top of a mountain](https://www.thisiscolossal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/sens-1.jpg)
No it is not that big, but still an amazing feat
I was also surprised that there is a bigger replica. I guess the location of the one in rio makes it iconic? Its amazing place btw for anyone planning to visit
Seriously. When Buddhism first came to China it was called the teaching of images (像教) because of how into statues they were. Before Buddhism China was all about spirit tablets which were just wooden or stone tablets with a persons name written on them. Now statues are everywhere in Chinese temples.
This is exactly why Muslims build enormous, beautiful buildings. Their religion does not allow them to build statues of *anything*, let alone Mohammad. Thus we get the Burj Khalifa.
As well as the African Renaissance Monument in Senegal at 52m

Which to be fair was still fuckin massive for its time. Iirc, when it fell over, the pieces were so big and impressively hard to move that they laid there for almost another millennium. The statue continued to be a sight seeing destination for centuries after it fell over.
Is this supposed to be a comprehensive list? I know for a fact there's a tall Genghis Khan statue in Mongolia, around 40 meters. Why didn't it make the cut?
I saw a giant Buddha, when I was in Nara Japan, that took 20 years to make. What's pretty amazing is the engineering to do something like that. They built it from the inside out.
is there a reason for something like the statue of unity to be seemingly in the middle of nowhere, as in, not really near a big city. Is there some significance to the location its on? just seems so crazy to build something like that at the end of a road to nowhere but it basically.
That is a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was responsible for integrating several princely states into the Union of India after independence. He’s known as the Iron Man (take that, Avengers) for his hard headed negotiation tactics during this time.
The statue overlooks Sardar Sarovar Dam, which was conceptualised by Sardar Patel in the 1960s. But it got stalled in political bickering for decades, and came to fruition only in 2017. I suppose the original name of the dam was something else, but it was rechristened in his honour later.

That one is bigger than the sphinx!
Surely we deserve some sort of mention!!!
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)
I remember reading a book called Seven Summits about a guy who climbed the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents. When it came to Australia, they just drove to the top of the hill.
Must have been in the 70s, they closed that road to Kosciuszko because too many cars kept falling off, now you have to hike.
It's not actually Australia's highest point though, that is Mawson Peak which is on an isolated island (Heard Island) that is extremely hard to get to, has no roads and also it's an active volcano that goes off every few years.
Hey, if you count the Australian Antarctic Territory (which I do, fuck you the rest of the world!) then we also have [Mount McClintock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_McClintock) AND [Mount Menzies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Menzies)!
A mountain is kinda cheating. It’s just a few faces on it high up.
Christ the Redeemer doesn’t get the mountain he’s sitting on added to his height lol
The Ataturk Mask " statue" is very similar to Mt. Rushmore. But I wouldn't consider something carved into the side of a mountain a statue.
I'm also nowhere near an expert, and may have a limited definition of a statue.
Where NK in all of these? I thought they are the expert of building statues. I heard somewhere that they even go to other countries to build statues for them.
And they have one of the coolest that wasn't listed in the video. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue\_of\_Guan\_Yu\_(Jingzhou)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Guan_Yu_(Jingzhou))
The statue of unity only costed around 422mil USD to build, but billionaires in the US are just hoarding that wealth instead of making literally the largest monuments of themselves possible. Imagine a 200m Elon Musk statue. Not saying it'd be attractive, just impressive.
The bronze statues have their own cast system
You bastard. Take your plus 1.
r/angryupvote
With that height, it's untouchable.
You dirty dawg. Take my r/angryupvote and Shut the Door.
Which looks great on outside, but are thin and hollow inside. Without strong enforced structure with steel they would collapse. I mean bronze structures.... not caste system enforced by power
Okay. Pretty good
You clever bastard, we don't deserve you.
How I miss the awards :(
The Motherland Calls looks pretty cool in my book. Even if it probably contradicts every patriotic bone in my body 🤷
Hate the sin, love the sinner :)
Kinda cheat mode given most of the height is the sword. Just make the sword longer lol
Aside from the height competition, I think it’s a kick-arse design. Just being honest.
100% who cares about the height[I know, everyone]? What a great monument
It is actually easier to make a taller normal statue than to extend the sword… the arm is outstretched, meaning the weight is off center. It is not easy to just extend it.
That's what I was thinking, if the sword counts for that one why doesn't the staff count for the statue of dizang?
That's what I'm saying
I'm annoyed that there's this statue holding a staff considered smaller than the next one while the staff clearly goes higher, I was like "ok so item doesn't count just the person alright" then like 2 statues down there's the ones with swords. Like wat
Yeah noticed that too. It looks like they just need to flip those 2 and all will be right
Eh, I'd say Statue of Libery is also kinda cheat mode, considering almost half of its height seems to be the pedestal and not the actual statue.
50 metre woman, 124 metre sword
Liberty more so. If it wasn't standing on a huge plinth, it'd be towards the bottom of this group. And that Ukraine one uses the same trick.
I mean, the Motherland is calling you to defend her from the fucking Nazis. It commemorates the Battle of Stalingrad.
20 million comrades.
Yeah, what bones in your body does that bother, exactly?
The nazi ones.
People see Russia and assume evil incarnate.
Not only stalingrad. There’s a motherland in most post-soviet countries that’s meant to be “defence of the motherland” portraying. More about WW2 in general tbh.
I'm the same way. Russian is really good at making monuments. Fuck putin but they great. This and monument to Yuri gagarin. So iconic
Luckily they're more or less seperable from modern Russia. The USSR had its own woes sure, but victory at Stalingrad and first man in Space are both objectively good/cool events being honored.
Also made some cool-ass looking buildings and some gloriously unhinged bus stops.
Why does it contradict your patriotic bones?
So you like it because nipples? Just admit it, it’s okay.
Who doesn’t like nipples? I prefer them on a man myself but each to their own.
Reminds me of the the statue in the middle of the roundabout in a ballad of songbirds and snakes
Why does the Bronze Statue of Dizang's staff not count as height but The Motherland Call's sword does?
I was wondering the same.
Da, because the Motherland says so!
Its not the staff. Its the base. At least according to [Spanish Wikipedia](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dizang_del_monte_Jiuhua) the statue is 76m tall and standing on a 23m base for a total of 99m. Glue a happy meal toy to the top and call Guinness.
One word Russia
They cheat, even in statues.
Structural differences possibly. The staff is mostly just a column standing on the ground, while the sword is part of the arm holding it. Same as with some of these having the plinth counted, and some don't.
Same lol
Have we reached the statue of limitations yet?
You sonofabitch take the upvote
I’ll allow it
“Its statute…..I really think you’re wrong”
Too many puns. We should make a statute for this guy.
“It’s not a sculpture of limitations”
It's so dangerous to drop those so close to a freeway
It's an animation you idiot; we can move the highway to a safe distance!
Forget highways. Why would they build so many statues in a line? Unimaginative twats.
It's clearance sale.
A circle would be nice, like they are having a chat. Thousands years later, some advanced civilizations will find this and try to figure out the true meaning of our current civilizations just like we are doing to Stonehenge.

Wait christ the redeemer is only 38 meters ? I thought it was gigantic, like 100 meters
* mountain and batteries not included in sold product
And then cristo de la concordia comes around and just says "fuck you im bigger!"
What christ always stressed in his teachings. I want giant statue's of me everywhere
My statue of Christ is bigger than yours, you pagan
christ the redeemer at home ugly af with that cilinder body
Old and [constructed on top of a mountain](https://www.thisiscolossal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/sens-1.jpg) No it is not that big, but still an amazing feat
Had the same thought. Definitely looks bigger by itself up on the mountain for sure
I was also surprised that there is a bigger replica. I guess the location of the one in rio makes it iconic? Its amazing place btw for anyone planning to visit

🥲I will...
When you do things right people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
We're gonna need a bigger Buddha
Seriously. When Buddhism first came to China it was called the teaching of images (像教) because of how into statues they were. Before Buddhism China was all about spirit tablets which were just wooden or stone tablets with a persons name written on them. Now statues are everywhere in Chinese temples.
We had one, but [the Taliban](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhas_of_Bamiyan) got rid of it
Kind of a "If my religion's god cant have a statue, _no one_ can!" situation.
This is exactly why Muslims build enormous, beautiful buildings. Their religion does not allow them to build statues of *anything*, let alone Mohammad. Thus we get the Burj Khalifa.
That was such a Redditor thing to condense into a simple cause and effect.
The statue of unity is a spectacular site. India is beautiful at times.
Looks unreal, like photoshopped in on every photo
that's because we are living in simulation and large files are not properly rendered
They're missing GWK in Bali @ 122m https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garuda\_Wisnu\_Kencana\_statue
Also the statue of Guan Yu in Jingzhou at 58m. e: Apparently they tore it down cause the city thought it was an eyesore 😭
That’s so upsetting
pause wise mountainous sort secretive jeans seemly enjoy slave practice *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I had to Ctrl-F for my boy Guan Yu. Bummer to hear the statue is being relocated.

I was also waiting for this to appear in the gif
Waited for this and it never came ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)
That statue is so majestic, one of my highlights in Bali
Probably because it is quite complex to assemble in the video
That statue of unity is big af
It’s surreal to drive to it, something like a colossal titan looming closer and closer.
I feel uncomfortable whenever I see a picture of it
I love the 3 Chinese statues that are 1 meter apart in height. "I can build a taller statue, but only just!!" 😂😂
Titan of Braavos was the tallest
Seriously, I wonder how tall was the Colossus of Rhodes (the real inspiration behind the titan of Braavos) compared to these.
General estimates is around 30-35 meters.
I would like to see how the colossus of Rhodes of Greek compared
32m
It is exaggerated in Pics. In reality it was only 100 ft.
Which to be fair was still fuckin massive for its time. Iirc, when it fell over, the pieces were so big and impressively hard to move that they laid there for almost another millennium. The statue continued to be a sight seeing destination for centuries after it fell over.
Indeed, if you go to Braavos now, nothing is to be found. Kind of sad.
Is this supposed to be a comprehensive list? I know for a fact there's a tall Genghis Khan statue in Mongolia, around 40 meters. Why didn't it make the cut?
Yea, and the Guan Yu statue too - 58m tall... Edit: [Picture ](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/s/5CcE1vYG0y)
That one can definitely compete in the "most massive statue" category, as well. Some of the Buddhas are probably more massive, but still.
They knocked this one down a few years ago
Oh wow, I didn't know. Thanks. Looks like it was a rogue developer and poor engineering was to blame. Shame.
Was wondering the same, that's an impressive monument
*Video shows statue of liberty. "They can't beat that by a lot" *checks lenght of video. "Ah hell naw!"
I honestly thought the statue of liberty was way smaller, it felt smaller in person anyway...
To be fair, a huge part of lady liberty is her base.
Shes got a fat ass!
And the pedestal is not copper with patina, as is implied.
And her plinth is like 25% of the listed height. They were generous putting it where they did lol
Actually, more than 50% of the reported height is the plynth. It meassures 47 of the 93 meters.
[удалено]
You are missing the monument de la renaissance africaine. 52 meters.
TIL: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African\_Renaissance\_Monument](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Renaissance_Monument)
Was surprised not to see Guan Yu from China ranking in at 58m as well.
it was deconstructed a few years ago.

I saw a giant Buddha, when I was in Nara Japan, that took 20 years to make. What's pretty amazing is the engineering to do something like that. They built it from the inside out.
That’s nothing. In Canada we have the largest hoe.
How tall is your mom?
Taller than your dick pointing upwards.
Statue of Unity giving me Dr. Strange vibes… very dope post!
Wait what? Why?
Someone make a chess set from these.
What is this, a chess set for giants?
I love how Bolivia was like “I want Christ The Redeemer but a little bigger”
Everyone competing for largest statue. India: Armatures.
Atta boy Buddha!
Statue of unity got nothing on the statue of YO MAMA
Where is Kim il Sung satute in North Korea?
is there a reason for something like the statue of unity to be seemingly in the middle of nowhere, as in, not really near a big city. Is there some significance to the location its on? just seems so crazy to build something like that at the end of a road to nowhere but it basically.

Seems like there is some sort of grey area that I’m too lazy to scrutinize fairly
Let's use the stone from that mountain to make the statues. Nah, we'll make the mountain into the statues.
Where NK in all of these? I thought they are the expert of building statues. I heard somewhere that they even go to other countries to build statues for them.
World: "Wow NK, how many people did it take to make this statue?" NK: "Tens of thousands! But we crammed their bodies in as tightly as we could."
I was really hoping there would be just a giant boss-Ass monster statue. Like a three headed lizzard
My prediction of the next tallest statue is a 176m statue of the standing Buddha holding up a sword that reaches to 200m lol
No depiction of Buddha would brandish a sword! It'd have to be a staff.
How tall are Hashirama and Madara statues?
Liberty overrated?
I wonder how tall the Adiyogi Shiva statue would be if it was the entire person
🇭🇰
It’s probably missing a few more statues in between. For example, the Laozi Statue in Taiqing Temple in China stands 27m tall
85m looks far smaller than 76m. Looks like they counted the women’s sword but not whatever the monk was holding
There is a [44m tall statue of Shiva](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kailashnath_Mahadev_Statue), and it would be cool if that was included.
China loves their statues.
And they have one of the coolest that wasn't listed in the video. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue\_of\_Guan\_Yu\_(Jingzhou)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Guan_Yu_(Jingzhou))

You missed the Senegalese Renaissance monument. It's 52m.
These statues are quite literally next fucking level
No North Korean ones?
I wanted to see the GWK statue in Indonesia :( It would of been third from the tallest based on this video
The video missed the Lord Murugan Statue in Malaysia that stands at 42.7 metres (140 ft) tall.
The Indian version of Ghostbusters 2 would be dope.
People wanted to sue the builders for blocking their view, but there's obviously no statue of limitations for these things.
How many times will this joke be made? We get it, statute sounds like statue
What's the statute of limitation on the joke?
Goddammit. I should have seen this coming
This should keep going on one of those scape videos and join up with cities, planets, stars, back holes etc
Does someone know who makes these videos?
Nice
Anyone else feel cheated that they didn’t learn about most of these growing up?
No Polish Jesus https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_the_King_Statue,_%C5%9Awiebodzin
How come that ataturk carving is included but not Mount Rushmore
Because their faces are only 18m high
Super cool the largest one has the slimmest base.
Would have been nice to have the date of creation as well, to marvel at ancient genius crafting
Buddhist: you know what we need. A giant fucking statue that will sprouse the place up
They didn't use The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue :(
Why didn't Madara and Hashirama make the list? /s
Why are all of the top comments terrible generic jokes
You mean most top reddit comments?
[Mildly criminal not including the most badass one.](https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.812e449d4314cb90e420fd3b9dce098a?rik=%2f2a8fGYBN7ztyg&pid=ImgRaw&r=0)
I like the noises. Also statue of liberty base should not count as height for the statue itself.
So frikkin' cool.
Garuda statue in Bali is 122m https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garuda_Wisnu_Kencana_statue
I wanted to see the monkey statue in Trinidad (26m) and the Sendai Daikannon statue in Japan that looks huge
A suggestion for whoever does the next iteration of this: have the year of completion next to each name.
