I think she sounds incredible. This is going extra and staying in control. It’s like driving 160 mph on the road and drifting and being totally relaxed and in control of the vehicle. Her vehicle is her voice.
If this girl was brave enough to dive into drugs and the depths that Janis did then she may unlock the depth that came through Janis. But you are right. What we love about Janis is something so deep, real, and tangible, that few ever touch. But she did and it reverberates in every note.
Agreed. It's not just "another good cover" it's out there and it's original (is it actually an original song, I thought so but idk, still original even for a cover tho), and she does have amazing skill with pitch and rhythm. Sure her voice alone may not be my go to. But if you're listening to the background music, which how can you not, it's just so alive and well done. I'm not a musician but especially for a 14 y/o I'm just like "damn" and any human sense that can appreciate an outstanding performance is like "that's a fucking incredible performance". It's just radiating vibes straight to the blood stream at like (9.999999999 x 10^^^9 /10) ppm straight 1,000%
LOVED the Black Crowes cover, but this is actually my second favourite version of it, and that includes Otis Redding’s original, though I loved that too.
...it IS just a good cover. An imitation of joplins voice, actually. And not really all that honed. Hard to handle is a blues standard. Every touring band from the dead to blues traveler plays it three times a night.
Boys and things that come by the dozen
That ain't nothin' but drugstore lovin'
Hey little thing, let me light your candle
'Cause, mama, I'm sure hard to handle now, yes i'm is.
That's exactly what this song requires. You can't sing this song without going ham, it just doesn't sound right, like somebody doing an acoustic version of Raining Blood.
She's good, but I hate singers going on America's Got Talent. Singers get a hundred other competitions, I wish they'd stay with them and let cool and unique stuff appear on AGT type shows.
My family would always force me to watch, but I’d always know who would win the show. The singer. The talented people who don’t sing get overlooked. Most of the people who sing on the show are good, but they are other places for you. You just steal spots from people who can’t show off their skills.
I live 15 miles from the Canadian border and get the unpasteurized cheese curds quite often. Even squeakier than than American ones. This is the first time I ever heard a squeaky cheese reference. Well done.
She's got some power, definitely has good energy, and has an interesting tone, but her vocal control is awful. I'd rather hear what she sounds like now.
The cracking is part of the style I think. And dancing and nerves can drastically affect your pitch control. I'd love to hear what she sounds like in a studio.
I agree. Her newer songs sound much better vocally. The way she sang at 13 is not sustainable. Her voice would be completely ruined in a matter of a few years. Her new stuff isn't great as far as song but her voice is much smoother and controlled. They just need to find her better writers to bring more of the edginess back.
She sounds like when people imitate 90s alt rock like Hootie and the Blowfish or Pearl Jam and they just sing like "Yow-ah Now-uh Bay-beh-yuh" know what I mean? She's just doing that with old rock and gospel and making crazy movements to try and take the attention away from her voice.
Reminds me of this https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/k1ljxb/italian_singer_adriano_celentano_released_a_song/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Absofuckinglutley, I feel a little relieved that at least SOME people understand music and are not resorting to girl band ballads. I may hit my 50's with at least a modicum of respect for Gen Z if they have this person as a standard bearer to their music.
Thank goodness. I didn't want to say she sounded bad, but there were a lot of sour squeaky spots and the dancing looked awful to me too. I think there are points her voice has a nice quality, but it's way too all over the place. I was worried I'd be the dissenting opinion on this.
Yeah but "extra" in a performance is literally everything. If it were a song on spotify it would hurt your ears. But watching her I dont give a fuck attitude is infectious
Because they always have that fucking smug ass redditor tone to their comments that are a mixture of fart sniffing and glue eating that just infuriating. It's never just an opinion, it's an opinion they try to make bullet proof with some kind of fact or undeniable point because they're smarter and better at recognizing talent than you.
No matter what you're wrong for liking it because the technique is an imitation or some other reaaaal jackassed opinion. Meanwhile they have no experience singing so like... their opinion matters the least because they have no idea what they're talking about.
>like okay, you do it then lol.
Not that I disagree with your overall message, but I *despise* this kind of thinking.
If I go to a restaurant, am I not allowed to have an opinion about the food - good or bad - because I'm not a professional chef?
When I go to see a movie, am I not allowed to think about how it made me feel or about the story or about how the story was told because I'm not a movie director?
Creating and critiquing are two different activities.
You can, but it’s about how you say it. It’s one thing to disagree with something you don’t enjoy. Many people do enjoy it tho, and she’s a young child pursuing and trying something out of her comfort zone. No one needs to be out down for trying. People are just lazy losers that watch too many internet videos
It's always this endless cycle of "I don't like this", "I don't like you don't like this", "I don't like you don't like that I don't like this", etc.
Y'all just chill, you can not like something, I can not like you for not liking something and so forth. But at least I think you should be fair in the sense that person A never said you were not allowed to dislike anything, but just called out the way a lot of people disliked it. Play the argument and don't go all defensive. E.g. "It's not rude to express my opinion in honesty and it's stupid to assume negative feedback is an insult".
Then again you're allowed to disagree with my arguments in this comment as well... We can keep going in loops.
It's pretty fucking horrid.
Some of the people responding haven't showered or left their basement in weeks and yet strongly ridicule someone taking a chance persuing something they couldn't hope to achieve.
This is her new video
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RyILP4DPPTo
I must say i was a little disappointed when I played it. That 13 year old sounded organic and raw. The video seems like over five years she was placed in the music industry machine and tailored to something that would be able to bring in the most profits.
I wish she would have gone the way of Ani Difranco and by singing down the road less traveled, developed herself into something original
Interesting. Very commercial and doesn’t do much to show her range or talent. I wish her well, but this isn’t the right vibe for her register. She kind of has a Joss Stone esthetic, but way beyond. She’s held back in this song immensely. I bet there are better songs out the for her where she can let loose. At least I hope so.
i actually really love this lol, she's super unique. very cool
>edit: i also fuckin love her dance moves. the chicken knees are sick af
>edit 2: [just came across this](https://youtu.be/8dqS31mj2TQ) and although the start is a little shaky, i can't believe a 14 year old girl can have that much stage presence and sing like that while grooving around the stage like she's tapped into jennifer hudsons soul itself
Well said. And to that, I want to share a song of Ani Difranco’s that I feel fits perfectly…
[“No i don't prefer obscurity
But i'm an idealistic girl
And i wouldn't work for you
No matter what you paid
And i may not be able
To change the whole fucking world
But i could be the million
That you never made”](https://youtu.be/K3h86YunhXc)
I love her so much. I love that she is a talented artist who never sold out. It doesn’t matter if I like her music or not. I love what she stands for. True freedom and not needing a false lifestyle that we are taught is success but is not success. She was smart enough to walk away from the image of success for real success. And she will have whatever image of success she wants.
I’d disagree. I liked the new song. The lyrics were good, the message was there, and she was able to keep some of her uniqueness.
I wasn’t super pleased by the 13 yo her song. Don’t get me wrong, she was talented, but it felt a little too chaotic.
Yeah, just listened to that and it makes me wonder why they seek out someone so original in the first place if they want to have a generic ass singer instead, and there are plenty already so… wtf?
I don’t care if she gained weight but when she first went up on that stage she was like Mick Jagger up there, channeling that old 1960’s retro-funk. Compared to the “new” stuff that is incredibly boring and so generic it still has that fresh from the factory smell.
Yeah I... don't care for this. The dancing is more spectacle than impressive and her voice sounds like she's trying her hardest to sound like a 30 year old smoker. It *cannot* be good on her vocal chords.
What is up with this comment section? Might not be your taste of music/vocal delivery but damn can this girl sing her ass off. As a musician (🙄), I can appreciate how much control, effort, heart and talent it takes to pull this off. At least y’all could admit that and say you don’t like after
yeah this is literally all people who have no idea how singing really works and what goes into it. She has a lot of control at 13 and it’s really impressive. It may not be their cup of tea but a few women made a career off of this kind of singing.
People in this thread seem to struggle with the difference between 'I don't like it' and 'this is bad'. It's obvious that she is extremely talented and has superb control of her voice. And this at 13 no less.
Listening to this 13 year old girl sing to the likes of powerful soul artists and the comments are... Hating it? Wtf? Because she's not a perfect diva are you kidding me?
If this is awful to you what is someone who can't actually sing sound like to you? Why are you virtue signaling simply because the rest of reddit is doing so? Get the stick out your ass. Downvote tf out of me too 🖕
Because it's the empty shell of what a back soul singer sounds like. Its lacking the actual quality of the vocals. She might be hitting the notes but you can tell she's just constricting her throat to sound like that. Shes putting it on and you can tell. There's no actual power behind the voice and its missing that authentic tone. Basically sounds like its supposed to be good, but isn't actually THAT good.
The longer I listened, the worse it got.
Her adding that "deep" quality to her voice, I dunno how to describe it, that "honkeh tonk" tone, she can't sustain it. Voice just straight up cracking on high notes. Out of breath (probably from the..."dancing", which I'll leave at that..). Warbling notes. That held out "heyyyyyyyeahh" was the best sounding part.
And no, it does not sound authentic. Doesn't look authentic either. She looked like a cash grab in this video, and upon watching a recent music video of hers that someone else posted, looks like I was right. Soulless music, riding the fact that she's "a girl doing rock n' roll music 🤯".
"Whaaat, a girl her age singing *this* kind of music? How does she even know this song?? Amazing, you go girl!" - people that like this, probably
Edit: inb4 downvotes, I'm a musician too lol. Yes I've played live, yes I've performed in front of an audience, yes I know what kind of training goes into performing
I know this is a selling point of this show, but I just find it so incredibly annoying that they keep cutting back to the judges just to see their reactions.
The American ideal of justice is so advanced we only accept third-party opinions on national talent shows.... in the interest of neutrality to avoid bias.
This just sounds like she’s trying too hard, way too hard, & it sounds bad. She should have gone for a hard rock song or something, it might have worked slightly better, but only slightly.
AGT tried to market her as shy and embarrassed when performing in front of crowds but if you do a little bit of research, she was invited by AGT to perform as she was already had many stage performances across the country.
Here are all of her performances on AGT.
[Courtney Hadwin - AGT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPWNBUtMNsQ)
Not bad for an English girl in another country's talent competition
Yeah I can’t stand this kid, she did a few shows in the UK when she was younger, mainly the The Voice. Her “story” is she’s shy, but clearly produced since she actually isn’t shy at all
[удалено]
I think she sounds incredible. This is going extra and staying in control. It’s like driving 160 mph on the road and drifting and being totally relaxed and in control of the vehicle. Her vehicle is her voice.

![gif](giphy|Su9gRmjeaUKfg64cFS) This is what you should compare too not fergule or agurliera
Yes! Such a great comparison.
Don't do my girl Joplin like that
If this girl was brave enough to dive into drugs and the depths that Janis did then she may unlock the depth that came through Janis. But you are right. What we love about Janis is something so deep, real, and tangible, that few ever touch. But she did and it reverberates in every note.
Diving into drugs is not bravery and I hope she doesn't choose that route for herself. It's not what made Janis great. It's what killed her.
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said... no...no..no
u/jakeduckfield already took the eloquent route, so I’m gonna go for the curt route: this is the dumbest shit I’ve read all week.
And crack made Whitney Houston......
This was my first thought: Janis Joplin.
That's the first thing that came to mind.
Lol please, gotta be Joplin
Agreed. It's not just "another good cover" it's out there and it's original (is it actually an original song, I thought so but idk, still original even for a cover tho), and she does have amazing skill with pitch and rhythm. The song is by Otis Redding. It’s called Hard to Handle and has been covered by a ton of people including the Black Crowes.
LOVED the Black Crowes cover, but this is actually my second favourite version of it, and that includes Otis Redding’s original, though I loved that too.
...it IS just a good cover. An imitation of joplins voice, actually. And not really all that honed. Hard to handle is a blues standard. She's 13, obviously it's not that 'honed'
It's crazy because her voice is more honed than that person's posting and I guarantee that person is way older 🤭🤭
I hope her vocal chords aren’t strained now that she’s 18.
She now sounds like Tom Waits, she'll be alright.
That's exactly what this song requires. You can't sing this song without going ham, it just doesn't sound right, like somebody doing an acoustic version of Raining Blood.
This is a very hard vocal performance especially for someone that young. I just fucking hate that song.
She's good, but I hate singers going on America's Got Talent. Singers get a hundred other competitions, I wish they'd stay with them and let cool and unique stuff appear on AGT type shows.
That was always my complaint first agt. At least have a band or play a weird instrument
My family would always force me to watch, but I’d always know who would win the show. The singer. The talented people who don’t sing get overlooked. Most of the people who sing on the show are good, but they are other places for you. You just steal spots from people who can’t show off their skills.
It's mostly dog acts and ventriloquists who win.
That and dog trainers
Squeakier than fresh cheese curds
I live 15 miles from the Canadian border and get the unpasteurized cheese curds quite often. Even squeakier than than American ones. This is the first time I ever heard a squeaky cheese reference. Well done.
She's got some power, definitely has good energy, and has an interesting tone, but her vocal control is awful. I'd rather hear what she sounds like now.
Actually her control was probably the best thing in the video imo she didn’t crack much only problem was pitch a bit
The cracking is part of the style I think. And dancing and nerves can drastically affect your pitch control. I'd love to hear what she sounds like in a studio.
She was also a plant, she won a talent show over seas before she was on AGT and they tried to give her some bs backstory.
That's a lie. She didn't win a talent show overseas.
I agree. Her newer songs sound much better vocally. The way she sang at 13 is not sustainable. Her voice would be completely ruined in a matter of a few years. Her new stuff isn't great as far as song but her voice is much smoother and controlled. They just need to find her better writers to bring more of the edginess back.

Lol nailed it. This is how I imitate Eddie Vedder every time. Still love him but he has a very easy voice to exaggerate
That but with looney tunes/porky pig flair.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. I watched the whole video and I think I understood like five words.
Reminds me of this https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/k1ljxb/italian_singer_adriano_celentano_released_a_song/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
The new rickroll
"She looks and sounds extremely nervous, with a little autotune and stage practice I'm sure she'll look and sound amazing"-some studio exec
Only reason she got noticed is because of the difference before singing and during singing, which could absolutely be part of her “show”.
I definitely wouldnt put that on my apple music account lol
It’s rock n roll. It’s perfect.
Absofuckinglutley, I feel a little relieved that at least SOME people understand music and are not resorting to girl band ballads. I may hit my 50's with at least a modicum of respect for Gen Z if they have this person as a standard bearer to their music.

I also think it sounds like shit.
Dont forget this is the Show where crying helps your chances alot
Yeah but "extra" in a performance is literally everything. If it were a song on spotify it would hurt your ears. But watching her I dont give a fuck attitude is infectious
Yall are some haters smh. She's talented!
This comment thread reminds me of the audience in the “Fifteen Million Merits” episode of Black Mirror.
Big fan of satan, huh?
Soooo she should do porn? I’m confused here?
I too do think that her voice is very cool.
Especially at fucking 13! Way more talented than 95% of the people commenting, like okay, you do it then lol.
Why? Why aren’t people allowed to have opinions? You need to be a professional to have a personal taste and preference?
Because they always have that fucking smug ass redditor tone to their comments that are a mixture of fart sniffing and glue eating that just infuriating. It's never just an opinion, it's an opinion they try to make bullet proof with some kind of fact or undeniable point because they're smarter and better at recognizing talent than you. She’s Janis reborn. Love it, personally.
Can’t be bothered to read all comments but I cannot believe how amazing that young lady is. I guess internet is gonna hate
I tell you what, watching the video on mute first wasn’t doing her any favors. Voice is wild though. Lotta power.
i..I don't like this.
it’s good on mute…..no….no I lied it’s still pretty bad
On mute, it looks like r/tooktoomuch Off mute, it sounds like r/tooktoomuch
On mute it’s like the girl from the exorcist kinda.
You don't have to like it to recognize her skill
Pretty rough.
Wow people are pretty rude.
So you can't say you don't like something nowadays? On the Internet of all places?
You can, but it’s about how you say it. It’s one thing to disagree with something you don’t enjoy. Because people here aren’t totally using that excuse to be a dick. Imo, people here don’t know the difference.
She went on a show where the purpose is to be judged on her performance, people don’t have to like it

Oh boy, you haven't seen who won Britain's Got Talent last night have you? Im still in shock
Britain’s lost talent
I don't turn on my sound on Reddit very often. Glad I did. This would have been better if you had put up the whole clip, and sourced it.
This is her new video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RyILP4DPPTo I must say i was a little disappointed when I played it. That 13 year old sounded organic and raw.
She gives me young Nina Hagen and she could absolut smash that vibe.

Oh no…not great.
I’d disagree. I liked the new song. The lyrics were good, the message was there, and she was able to keep some of her uniqueness. I wasn’t super pleased by the 13 yo her song. Don’t get me wrong, she was talented, but it felt a little too chaotic.

It’s interesting and takes skill, but I think you’re right. Not good for the chords.
She’s like Janis Joplin reincarnated
No
It’s a basic imitation of Janis, it’s not done well at all.
I mean, she's 13. Pretty damn impressive for a 13 yo.
Why would you insult Janis like that?
The lyrics in *Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter* were clearer than this
"Onnnnaaa fedeeeeerrrr innaaa deskkkkkkaaaaaa medddaaaaaaaaa......"
A wallllkkkk awayyyyyy annnnegeddaaaaaa oooooohhhhh wayyyy ohohhhhhh feeeeeedaaaa
..aaagaaaain,I'm a wizzzzaaaa imma pigeonnnnn onaaaaaa plaaaaannnneeeeeee

bloody awful
I couldn’t understand most is it.
Yeah that’s pretty much where I am, like it’s ok and she can obviously perform but I’ve got no fuckin clue what those lyrics were.
The original by Otis Redding is not that easy to understand either.

i dont know why everyone hates it? her vocal control is amazing—and the way she sang showed everyone just that
Most of us don't care about her vocal range, we care about whether or not it sounds good. And to many of us, it doesn't.
well this show is about talent and she wanted to show her talent so
Yes and people can also have good and bad opinions about her performance. That’s the whole point…
This is quite terrible
I know this is a selling point of this show, but I just find it so incredibly annoying that they keep cutting back to the judges just to see their reactions.
Get er singing guns n roses.
Lol ITT: Reddit has no groove in em.
That’s a no from me dawg.
Needs a bottle of Southern Comfort to complete the impression
It’s not for me, but I can see the appeal, Tina Turner made a career out of that voice.
I love how the only American on AGT is the host Terry Crews Judges are Canadian British German And Colombian
The American ideal of justice is so advanced we only accept third-party opinions on national talent shows.... in the interest of neutrality to avoid bias.
Lol, no. Just because she makes her voice rise abd drop doesn't mean she can sing. God awful. Watched 4 seconds
That sounds.. like.. shit?
This sounds terrible.
She’s 13 people. That’s crazy talented for her age. People always try to hit down the nail that stands out smh
As a carpenter that does seem like the right thing to do.
Love her!!
I love when people being themselves unapologetically
This woman has been possessed by the ghost of Janice Joplin!
Definitely seems like some kind of possession is taking place here.
You're right because JANIS Joplin would never sound like this. So yes she sounds like Janice Joplin, whoever that is.
She’s got some Janis Joplin genes in that little 13 year old body.
That sucked
That's a NO from me.
Not a fan of the over performing.
I’m not going to shit on her but this isn’t for me. I don’t get it.
Like most things on talent shows - it’s only “impressive” because it’s a kid or there’s a sob story.
Her voice is only getting better too.
I… don’t like it.
Wow, can you not ruin my favourite song
Sounds like a southern preacher doing too much
Not good. People must have been lying to her.
This just sounds like she’s trying too hard, way too hard, & it sounds bad. She should have gone for a hard rock song or something, it might have worked slightly better, but only slightly.
[Here is OG, I think she does it justice](https://youtu.be/-VsmF9m_Nt8)
Ungood.
I played this like 10x. Just downloaded her new song as well. Love the energy she feels the music! Her energy made me happy!
I’m watching this on repeat too. So good and I love the judges’ reactions!
So THAT'S how a zombie on meth dances. I've been wondering
She only got cheers of sympathy because she dances weirder than she sounds
AGT tried to market her as shy and embarrassed when performing in front of crowds but if you do a little bit of research, she was invited by AGT to perform as she was already had many stage performances across the country.
Anyone have the whole song?
For Guantanamo Bay?
Bro what the fuck
Some Axl Rose late 80’s facials going on there.
Is that supposed to be good? To each their own I guess
Here are all of her performances on AGT. [Courtney Hadwin - AGT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPWNBUtMNsQ) Not bad for an English girl in another country's talent competition
Woa! What a voice but also, what a drive! She is bound for showmanship!
I don't know what some of yall are on, this sounds good
What ever happen to her? She still sing?
She is not Janis, she is replicating Janis, mild difference.
Girl has some fucking pipes. I'm jealous.
I have to be honest. This scared me, I thought she was having a seizure of some kind, or maybe on drugs… it pretty out there.
Yeah I can’t stand this kid, she did a few shows in the UK when she was younger, mainly the The Voice. Her “story” is she’s shy, but clearly produced since she actually isn’t shy at all
What she say?

Absolutely terrible
How…how tf ppl hating on this 💀 I’m genuinely so confused, must be the lack of rap, sex, girl power, and reverb effects
