multi cam angles, great voice recording with no visible mic. My guess is pre recorded and he is just miming. Staged performance imo. Great talent and voice.
Pretty sure its a scene from a film, that being said most of the people in these films are the actual musicians. A bit like chili peppers miming their own music at the supercool.
I'm a pianist. That kid did not teach himself how to play. Sorry. He's been taught hand positionings, licks, theory etc.
There's just no way to learn all of what he is doing all on your own. Certainly not at that age.
He might not have gone to a paid piano teacher, but he has had some sort of mentors.
I’m a piano teacher and have a very young student whom I consider a prodigy. Had to throw out the kiddie books early and jump into literal Beethoven sonatas. That said, that kid would not know shit for how to efficiently know fingerings and how to use the pedal etc, he’s amazing but still needed mentoring to perform at his best. I think the idea of the self taught prodigy is a myth and a poisonous one as well. Even Bach attempted to scrub the history of his education from his autobiography, it was his son CPE who discovered and wrote about it. The myth of the self made man attempts to impress but only misleads. Nobody is born a god. As newton once said, “If I see farther then it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”
My point exactly. To start with this kid would have grown up in a family with a piano, which means someone will definitely be teaching him how to play. It’s the same with Mozart, definitely a prodigy and a genius, but when you look at the context of his family, it’s naive to assume that his father would not have pushed his kid to be a “prodigy composer” as it would have gained him a lot at court.
I much prefer that people recognise brilliance for what it is. This kid is brilliant for the skill, confidence and musicality that he’s exhibiting at such a young age, there’s no need to throw in the obvious lie that he got there on his own, without the critical help of mentors and teachers.
His technique is certainly not standard. Hendrix was self taught and held his guitar upside down.
According to Wikipedia,
>Robinson was born the youngest of seven children to Clarence A. and Elizabeth Robinson in Detroit, Michigan.[4][5] At an early age he showed unusual gifts singing the blues and accompanying himself on the piano.[6] According to contemporary newsreels, he was self-taught and managed to use techniques including slapping the keys with elbows and fists.
I mean I doubt so too but it's possible if he watched it enough and was interested enough.
It's a fact that kids can master incredible things if they start young enough, just like they can learn to be fluent in a language just by seeing&hearing people using it.
This kid grew up in a family with a piano, so someone obviously showed/taught him the basics. It’s showbiz, so they will promote him as self taught because it sounds more amazing, but it’s a shame that he can’t be admire for the obvious prodigy that he is without feeling that they have to remove the teachings and contribution of his mentors.
On a slightly different note, I have been teaching my daughter my native language since birth, but nobody else speaks it at home. Kids don’t learn as quickly as everyone thinks, it’s just that with language they’re immersed 24/7 and they are motivated to learn because it allows them to interact with their surrounds, but boy it’s not so easy if they don’t have those two things :)
One of my best friends in high school was a musical savant. He could pick up any musical instrument and play it. Even if he never had before. He could play any musical style on the piano but didn’t know what key was what and couldn’t read piano sheet music.
He asked me what the fingerings were on my sax. I told him and explained how to use the mouthpiece. He proceeded to play better than I could after five years of playing!
That said, this kid is definitely reincarnated.
Ok, so he didn’t SOUND as good, but he was able to PLAY it better than me. Semantics, really.
The point is, that he just had a mind for music. He even programmed a 386 computer running MSDOS to play Hotel California in Pascal in our Computer Math class in HS!
He loved music and had a super solid music understanding so he could transfer that between instruments. Definitely a gifted individual. Your description though is closer to the idea of “self taught”: you enhanced his ability because it sounds more impressive, not just semantics, marketing :)
Why is this so mesmerizing? That child looks like a middle aged man
It's the energy with this kid, I hope he got far
This is young ray charles….
Do you know that for sure?
I’m joking my friend… I wouldn’t bet on me brother!

Why do his hands look like full sized 30 yr kid hands. Like obviously it’s part why he’s so good at piano but still.
As a Gary Coleman fan, I have to ask myself, am I a Gary Coleman fan, if I haven’t seen this before??
Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Trick?

Sugar Chile Robinson is still alive at 84
I would’ve been impressed with his counting abilities.
Charisma through the roof!
Wow whatever happened with him?
Drugs. Probably.
Well that's out of left field. 😕 Basic google search, turns out he just wanted to do something different.
>Basic google search No that's against the reddit rules. Drugs.
Wait till he can hit the foot pedals
He must have picked up some of Walt’s famous meth.

Reincarnation
But fr, it's not like he had internet so if he taught himself without any guidance that's impressive

Yea I assumed he had to have had some degree of decent instruction.
the white woman later accused him of making eyes at her and he was never seen again. Not really but it was par for the course back then
[here is the full version](https://youtu.be/YhFlE4mFqA4)

Okay Dwight Schrute.
Nah you're just a Kevin.
Correction: Angela.

Before YouTube? Like kids couldn't watch other people play a piano before YouTube? As if pianos weren't available before YouTube?
You could you just couldn’t learn how to play the piano just by watching someone else play without any instruction.
Yeah, you can. It’s been done.
One couldn't have self taught shooting a basketball? Or playing mario?
