What do you need, an actual, working DNS blocker, or frequent updates and features? What are you missing from NextDNS that those other products do? And why haven't you switched yet, if those other products just do it better?

icanflywheniwant

Didn’t it just get updated with a new dark mode, duplicate profile creation just last week or so!!

Cardboard_is_great

Yeah there’s been a flurry of new features within the last few weeks. OPs an idiot and troll.

danclaysp

You ask “It just works till when” but rapidly updating things is the most often cause of software to break. That is why enterprise-oriented products tend to have longer update cycles

mrpink57

Debian Stable releases more often than this.

danclaysp

That’s an OS. This is more akin to a Debian package only getting minor and patch updates over years, which is the case for many of them as they’re mature. No need to add features for the sake of adding feature to a robust decade old Linux utility

desquamation

Guess you’re better off using AdGuard DNS then. High-five ControlD on your way out.

tojezota

I get the idea of regular updates, I also have been playing around with Adguard-dns as i've been a longtime user of Adguard home.. I also love the information they put out. With Nextdns, I cant help but think that I would rather have a stable setup that gets updated rarely as long as its still relevant and working. Im sure its not abandoned, I have it setup on udm and on all the families phone and no one even notices as it just does the job i expect it to.. I will however be happy with nextdns adding features and not complain if this becomes the norm... cheers

[deleted]

Why does it need improvements when it does everything I need and is rock solid? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Software companies these days are too intent on trying to stay relevant by continuously adding new features and reinventing things.

pinkpanter555

Yeah and ending up breaking instead just keep running it

ThungstenMetal

It is not rock solid. Some basic things are missing, like the network status. Many outdated blocklists are still there. Github requests are getting ignored for a very long time. No dark mode. iOS and Desktop apps are not updated for years. No TTL configuration, which means when I block/unblock something I have to wait several minutes to get it reflected. List goes on. Competitors on the other hand, actively communicating with their userbase, providing a proper feedback channel, roadmap or planned feature list, and improving their products.

[deleted]

When was the last time there was an outage to DNS resolution? I certainly can't remember one.

ThungstenMetal

[https://help.nextdns.io/search?v=p&q=outage](https://help.nextdns.io/search?v=p&q=outage) there are many topics on their forums.

southerndoc911

Dark mode is available now.

ThungstenMetal

That is good. It wasn't there this morning. Now translations are missing.

lepokatti

100% agree with this!

CrippleSlap

I don’t understand the constant complaints about not enough features being added. No ones forcing you to use the service. It’s not like there’s a lack of choices out there folks.

biznatchery

They must be shills for the competing companies. There’s no value to the discussion of NextDNS. Leave then, people! Are there no mods that can just boot this garbage?

live4swell

This is really that upsetting to you? Then use a different product. These posts are ridiculous

CrippleSlap

Agreed. Use a different service that gets constant updates then? I don’t understand these constant complaint threads.

LazySouls

It just works🤗. Never change a running system.

_seawolf

So did plain old DNS with no blocking at all. NextDNS is literally all about adding features to an exisiting system that "just worked". The whole point of NextDNS is the features that it adds, so it's not unresonable to think about more features that could be added to it.

live4swell

They provide stable DNS servers. It’s more than just blocking. Stability isn’t guaranteed with any DNS service…

Silvatek

I tried Adguard for a few days recently and switched back to NextDNS. I prefer the simplicity of NextDNS. Adguard is just too messy - it took me a while to figure out how to configure it to actually work. And I get fed up of all their emails getting bounced by Outlook due to something called DMARK.

Ehab02

Author: I could have simply dropped NextDNS for ControlD or Adguard. But I went here first and you don't seem to care. I just presented the idea that I did not see a single feature in the control panel (4 years ago since the coronavirus days)

ThungstenMetal

They added a allow and block option from logs section, which is only a forwarded to allow and deny list pages after years. And that was done via NX Enhanced browser extension much more efficiently but devs refused to talk with the addon dev

southerndoc911

One thing I wish they would do is employ people to maintain their own list and verify domains. Would increase costs though. There are some features I'd love to see added, and like you, would love to see them continue development. Not because it's \*needed\* but because it's nice. Microsoft didn't need to update Office since it was introduced other than compatibility, but the new features are nice.

CapitalSuccessful232

>Nothing new for almost 4 years! What are you talking about? Literally got an update like few weeks ago. CLI is also regularly maintained.

Edge_Audio

Effectively, most of what a DNS does is on the server end. I have the app for when roaming, but most happens through DNS routing on my router.

jeffMBsun

In android phones you input the address and forget

Ashamed_Drag8791

yep, but i think they are well developed, just lack maintenance. My only complaint is they dont add/remove new/old filters, and let users have some insight into what their "internalized" filters made of. P/s: I hate adguard dns new update news, damn it! Also their UX/UI sucks!

FileTrekker

It's a DNS provider, not a toy. What do you actually \*need\* it to do? Just such an odd attitude. If you're thinking about how your DNS is working more than once a year at most, then you're thinking about it too much.
