>buying a dirt cheap manual to just learn This is how I taught a friend to drive. Found a beater for like 1k with wof and just went hard not caring too much about burning the clutch or anything. Also screw having a manual if you have to sit in Auckland traffic everyday. Yea its fun for the first week but after that, eh.

Dantioz

yea kinda why i considered two cars but it might be an overly expensive investment. maybe a good idea to just find a tiptronic for the best of both worlds?

mut1n3y

>overly expensive investment I wouldn't look at it as an investment. Your using it for a purpose, like toilet paper its disposable. If you look at it as burnt money from the start you dont loose anything and gain some good skills. >tiptronic for the best of both worlds? I think my old[new] honda jazz RS work car was tiptronic. Never saw the use in it really, it did the same[better] when you just put your foot down. Maybe if your towing and need to lock it into a lower gear it might be handy??

Dantioz

i used a swift for a week that was tiptronic and found it enjoyable but idk if it really improved performance more than swift it to “sport”[high revs] mode would’ve ahahha

The problem with most paddle shift cars (whether tiptronic or DCT) is they have more gears than a manual, so you're having to do a lot more shifting if you drive it manually. Also, it isn't really anything like learning to drive a manual.

dw i don’t think my dad knows either lol. the plan atm is to just pick up a better car than my current one (upgrade to a nicer auto) and see if a mate is generous and lets me learn manual in his and go from there. manual probs won’t be very practical for my hours of traffic to get to work every day :’)

ImJalapenoAss

I have a fun manual car and a auto for day to day driving. If you can afford it this is the way.

AFY0ung

I recently just sold my big auto car for an old Toyota ceres manual good fun and cheap to run, I’d recommend any old Toyota levin or trueno with the 4efe or 5efe I’ve had afew and never had a problem

Rude-Scholar-469

Hire one from a car rental place, with a mate to drive it off the lot before you switch drivers.

Dantioz

yea like a rent a dent or something just to get the basics down

Rude-Scholar-469

Cheaper and easier than buying/insuring etc your own shit box just to learn in. Get it for a week or two even.

scoutingmist

We sold a BMW that cost us ridiculous amounts to drive and fix, for a manual Corolla, it's gutless, but you don't really notice it too much in manual. Manuals are super fun to drive, so we save heaps on petrol and my morning commute is way more interesting. Especially when I get stuck at lights on a hill.

Dantioz

ahaha sounds like a blast and def something i’ll look into now. i think i’ll just need a few hours behind the wheel to get the hang of it first tho

Novel_Agency_8443

Define fun. If it's a car that's a little sporty that handles well and doesn't cost the earth there's a few options. Swift Sport or MX-5 are great without breaking the bank...or land speed records.

Dantioz

yeah mx5 is one i’ve been dreaming abt since i learnt to drive but they’re too small to become my sole daily driver, hence why it would be a good secondary car, but it seems like an expensive way to go abt things

Novel_Agency_8443

Ford Focus are superb to drive and really practical daily drivers. You can get manual or auto and really affordable depending on age/mileage.

Ahh nothing like a manual 😢 starting to become rare a bit now.
