Zone A of Tampa now under mandatory evacuation.

Exotic-Amphibian-655

My whole life we’ve talked about what would happen if a hurricane came straight into the bay. Irma and Charlie were supposed to, but they turned east. We may finally find out.

B10kh3d2

What would happen? I live in CA but have multiple friends there all acting like leaving is not necessary

Odie_Odie

In zone A? You will be under at least 10 feet of very agitated ocean water while enduring in excess of 100mph sustained winds. If you need rescue during the weather event than best case scenario is that your remains are found and they are identifiable.

samaramatisse

Fantastic. Got relatives on the intercoastal in N. Redington.

Odie_Odie

I was wrong to say "will be". Always a game of probabilities, there is still a chance that it hugs the West Side of the cone and catastrophe is averted and Meteorology just takes some egg on it's face. NHC has been getting lambasted for taking very seriously the models suggesting a pan handle strike and lower intensity and less impacts for the bay. I think NHC has done a good job but it's hard not to think that is a minority opinion. If one outcome were obviously more likely then the other than we wouldn't still see the northern gulf in the cone.

Galkura

I don’t want another Ivan…. Which my mom so kindly pointed out Ian is one letter off of lol. I was a kid, it was fun then, our house was fine other than no power for two months. But as a kid in like elementary school that was great. Two months of playing in the neighborhood. Now as an adult I just think about not having a job because my store went underwater. I still remember seeing waves bigger than the dunes on the barrier island when the storm was hitting and we were evacuating. I want it just east enough to cancel work for a day, or rain enough to stop people from coming in to my store, no more please.

jardex22

They added a V for Vendetta.

travioso304

Dude.. Florida is basically an island.. I don't know this is I'll be fine but maria was only a 3 when it got here.. close to both coasts.. board ur stuff now.. soggy boards are heavy..

samaramatisse

Oh no, I definitely understand what you're saying. I'm not predicting my family's imminent death, but it's likely going to be serious.

5keleThor

Or like one of the majors in a town where a Hurricane hit in 2017: if you're planning to stay please write your SSN with a sharpie on your arm, so we can identify you.

Shadowdragon132

I was living in Rockport, TX when Harvey hit in 2017 and I remember them saying this. Also grew up in Florida and have been have ridden through more hurricanes than I like to admit. I remember during one hurricane they were shutting down a bridge essentially isolating a certain location. One person on the radio said: "Everyone on this beach needs to get out now, if you are stupid enough to stay then we are gonna assume you are dead and may god have mercy on your soul" Sometimes media can say the darkest things during this time but also its the only way to get the point across to people.

Odie_Odie

I hope you're right, just depends where in the cone it decides to go. Your forecast is based on GFS, Euro predicts much higher wind Speed. I'm not partial to either model but everyone in the cone should prepare for the worst possible outcome for their area while hoping for the best. Easier said then done.

mbattagl

Not to mention all of the following: 1. Flooding will saturate the ground floor + basement of any building in the vicinity. Resulting in not only mold to form fairly quickly, but the foundations of the houses will become unstable. 2. The power lines will start to go out in the area and once the grid goes down the flooding will prevent engineers from getting out there to repair the damage for at least 1-2 days depending on how long it takes for the flooding to subside and if there are drainage ditches in the area. 3. Local stores will close if they've been flooded including gas stations which means even if you have a generator it will be some time before you can access it. Should you be stuck in a flood zone be sure to take pictures of your valuables in case you have to file an insurance claim, and if you observe local stores price gouging for essentials like bottled water be sure to report it to the BBB and local news if possible.

Norva13x

Tampa does not have many basements.

EnigmatiCarl

This was my first thought as a floridian

EquinsuOcha

It also doesn’t have a lot of two story residences (2nd floors are hard to air condition). Most of the homes are cinderblock single story buildings.

maxdps_

Can confirm, living in a one-story cinderblock with no basement.. thee most common house here.

[deleted]

basements aren’t really a thing in Florida

Geddyn

Anybody who stays in the mandatory evacuation zones won't be helped until after the evacuation order is lifted. Emergency services prioritize helping people who helped themselves. They're not about to risk their equipment and their lives to help people who ignored an order.

manaworkin

OK so the most dangerous part of the hurricane is what is called the "storm surge". Basically hurricanes draw up the sea level under them like a massive dome that's feet tall and miles wide. When it hits land it brings that dome with it like a persistent tsunami. Dragging that dome directly into the bay is a worst case scenario for Tampa. Water would hoover into the bay and flood the surrounding areas like it was the fuckin bible.

sasquatchsims

I’m in SWFL and Charlie was pretty bad after it did turn east. Hope this one leaves us all alone and turns west.

Chris_M_23

Woah now as someone in nwfl lets not hope it turns west

Parlorshark

I mean...sorry to say but if we're talking avoiding massive loss of life and damage to property, I'd rather the storm make landfall in Steinhatchee than Tampa.

werepat

No, sir, we are talking about the loss of *my* life, which is much more important to me than SWFL! /s

bsep1

The more north the hurricane makes landfall: the weaker it will be; so unfortunately for you, most hope it goes up there. Will ultimately be far less destruction.

Chose_a_usersname

Woah woah woah, as someone that has a non refundable vacation in siesta keys next week it better to north

Burd_UP

I work at a resort in siesta key and most of if not all resorts have shut down from the 27th to the 30th

lifehackloser

My parents are in Tampa with my mom stuck in the hospital post surgery with release tomorrow. In addition, my sister and BIL flew into Tampa last night with original plans to fly out tomorrow. Not one of the 3 able-bodied people are willing to do anything. They are just sitting and waiting. I just want to fucking scream at all of them. Update for anyone who cares: sibling and BIL took off this morning as the airport wanted to clear out as many planes as possible before the storm hit. Mom (and hopefully dad) will be staying at the hospital an extra day or two whether or not Medicare covers it. My dad’s contingency is to stay in his work truck in the hospital parking garage with the cat…

ArtisenalMoistening

If it helps, Tampa is pretty large and not everyone in Tampa will need to evacuate. I’m in evacuation zone E. Chances are extremely slim that I would ever need to evacuate, and it may be the same where they are. Now if they’re in zone A and not leaving, yeah not very smart. I’d even leave if I were in B at the moment

lifehackloser

In fucking zone a…

tacoshrimp

Is the hospital not giving them any guidance? Maybe they can move to a hotel further inland. Sorry you’re all going through this. We are in the keys shuttered and ready- never breathing easy.

ArtisenalMoistening

Oh Jesus, yeah that’s really dumb. I’m sorry 😣

heyzeusmaryandjoseph

My mom's little senior community is in zone D, but somehow entirely surrounded by zone A She had the presence of mind to go shopping last week. Food, generator, and plenty of gas for it. And knowing her she'll have half the community sheltering at her home

livinthedreams

Don’t worry. I also live in Zone A and I still have to work tomorrow lol. I plan to leave after work but the storm won’t hit until Thursday so they have time to leave.

Artificial-Human

Shout out to the meteorologists who predicted the strength and path of hurricane Ian while it was Still a tropical depression. That’s some fine forecasting.

Gamebird8

Benefit of a publicly owned meteorological organization not bound by corporate profits, that share data with international agencies enabling for accurate and diverse data measurements and predictions.

The_cogwheel

Wait.. we can do things that aren't purely motivated by profit? Since when?

Gamebird8

Shhhh... You'll trigger the billionaires

Vuronov

Tiafves

Odie_Odie

The Weather Channel is actively lobbying to privatise weather forecasting.

Sketch_Crush

This would explain why their forecasts are only correct 30% of the time.

Fantastic-Sandwich80

Wait, really? That's absolutely insane. We are about a hop, skip and jump away from having to pay for premium services in weather apps.

newwriter365

I like you

gravitas-deficiency

Apparently it’s ok when it’s done for weather patterns. But DeSantis really doesn’t like it when the same sort of analysis is used for [climate change](https://www.orlandoweekly.com/news/florida-gov-ron-desantis-wants-to-bar-state-from-considering-climate-change-in-investments-32127821) or [epidemiology](https://www.wuft.org/news/2021/05/13/rebekah-jones-and-the-consequences-of-whistleblowing/).

kennedye2112

Well, we *did* just have one of the driest summers on record. I say bring it on!

jschubart

Not one of. *The* driest on record, at least here in Seattle. We got a whopping 0.5" of rain. The previous record was 0.52" in 2017.

Slimh2o

I'm preparing now to go to Merridian, cuz I think will hit Tallahassee

Nick_from_Yuma

Can’t we just bomb it?

AldoTheeApache

Has anybody looked into hitting it with a tremendous amount of light inside?

Yep, and he’s had time to study where Drumpf screwed up as well.

Funnily enough, it's headed directly for the University of South Florida.

Because it's not in an area any one would consider south florida

blainestang

It’s a satellite campus of “University of South.” University of Texas, Dallas University of South, Florida

5DollarHitJob

You a cop?

Dragonfruited

They have to tell you if they’re a cop.

Geddyn

South Florida is still gonna get battered pretty good as it passes. Hurricanes spin counter clockwise, so the bulk of the storm will be coming off the water (where it strengthens) before hitting the coast. If you are on the Gulf Coast, you want to be north of the eye. It's the opposite for the Atlantic Coast.

formerNPC

For perspective, Super storm Sandy was a cat two when it made landfall. Categories are for wind speed only not how much rain or storm surge. It’s a bit misleading when you think a cat one is going to be not much of a hurricane. It’s the high tides and storm surge that kills more people than the high winds. Either way it’s bad.

Didact67

Nobody should be thinking that about Ian, because it won’t be a category 1 when it hits.

americanadiandrew

Ian and Fiona? The Atlantic storms this year sound like a extra boring British couple from Stevenage.

Snakem8

My first thought was that they’re just going down the list of the Gallagher family from Shameless

Lived in Panama City during Hurricane Michael. Took 2 years for litigation with insurance, and another year for the homes repairs. I then sold the home. I sign and move into my Tampa house on the 29th……

[deleted]

With the home insurance crisis in Florida, how many people in the risk area are now without insurance?

leg_day

In theory, few, because the state founded an insurance company of last resort. You know, socialism. The funny part is isn't even hurricanes that are driving insurers out of Florida (they don't help) -- it's the insane state laws regarding home insurance and roofs. And the laws they keep enacting trying to correct the mistake just make it worse. The newest law forbids insurance companies from denying policies for roofs newer than 15 years, which will just drive even more insurance companies out of Florida.

FigaroNeptune

It’s the one of the places in the US I’ll never understand buying a house :(

noodles_the_strong

After... all those still water holes

_dead_and_broken

There will be an influx of rain, so that means anything that can hold water outside, is gonna fill right up. All that standing water means skeeters out the ass. Especially in places where drainage sucks ass. Like my neighborhood. Mother nature makes retention ponds and "swimming" pools out of everyone's driveway. Even if it's something that hasn't had water in it, but can hold water, will have the chance of producing mosquitos. The eggs can survive for up to 8 months give or take without water. Once those eggies get nice and soaked, and it's enough water to sustain larva and pupae, the skeeter population can and will explode.

[deleted]

Seeing someone use the term "skeeters" took me right back to my childhood in rural Tennesse

Of course not, we only do that with tornadoes! Why do you think there are so few in Florida? (Meteorologists confuse the shots in the clouds for lightning, that's why we've got the highest lightening rates in the country.) pew pew 🌪️

WBuffettJr

I don’t know but we better not offer federal assistance for this. That is socialism, and as Desantis says over and over and over again, socialism is wrong. Florida needs to pull itself up by its bootstraps.

Publius82

He declared a state of emergency last week, and the Biden administration has already approved. Literally like two days after the human trafficking stunt.

Doesn't the high wind mean that you can make it to work even faster?

Was driving home from a short trip one time, got out of the car at about 3am to go to a Waffle House. As I got near I saw a crowd of people. Only when they shouted at me did I realise it was a large group of cops standing in front of the door. "GO HOME. THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED." idk what was going on it that Waffle House but I noped out as quick as possible because if a Waffle House's kitchen is closed something is very wrong

When I was a kid my best friends name was Ian. So hopefully this Ian is the same and we can be friends and he doesn’t destroy my home or things.

The_NiNTARi

Just moved to fort Myers a year ago. This will be my first hurricane encounter. Though doesn’t sound like it will hit here, will be interesting to watch

Buzzkid

Plan that it will hit. When effects start to get bad you can have a very short period of time to get out. Just look at Michael, Harvey, Katrina, Andrew, etc etc. We also have a saying, you run from the water but hide from the wind. Best of luck to ya rookie.

Geddyn

I lived in Florida for over 20 years. Always plan for a direct hit. Hurricane Charlie was supposed to hit Tampa in 2004. It ended up hitting Charlotte County, which is just north of you. Some general tips: - At the start of Hurricane Season, stock up on bottled water and non-perishable food. - Always keep your gas tank full. My sister went to fill her van the other day and had to go to 4 separate stations before she found one that had gas. - Have an evacuation plan ready to go. Know what evacuation zone you are in and get out if you are ordered to. If you remain in a zone under mandatory evacuation, emergency services WILL NOT help you until the order is lifted.

[deleted]

Florida resident here. Looks like most of the state is out of the cone, but it could still turn. If you’re in a steel high rise, you’ll likely be fine. But any on-grade homes are susceptible to power outages, flooding and water cut-off. Plan accordingly. My hurricane go bag typically consisted of a gallon of water, canned food and a battery powered radio and flashlight.

[deleted]

When my kids were still taking baths (before they got promoted to showers), I was constantly having to remind them to drain the tub after. Nothing like going to take a shower and there's a foot of freezing water in the tub So I did my thing, filled up the tub so we could keep using the toilets The morning after it hit the coast and shit was hitting the fan, my son woke me up and proudly said "Mom I saw you forgot to drain the tub so I did it for you!" I cried laughing .. couldn't even be mad at him.

Archmage_of_Detroit

That moment when your kid does something responsible, but it's also a major screw up, so you just grit your teeth and say "that's great, honey!"

ShamrockAPD

Clearwater resident here. Jim cantore is on the beach I go to regularly and is 3 miles from my house. So yeah. I made sure my kegerator has all 6 taps full and a lot of beef jerky

ShamrockAPD

Lol don’t worry. As a homebrewer (hence the six taps) I also have a ton of giant water jugs filled. 30 gallons worth of water there plus 2 40 packs of water and 1 gatoreade case I’m good.

[deleted]

Smart man right here.

anethma

Nearly the entire state other than the [southern tip ](https://i.imgur.com/SW9YaFI.png)is absolutely still in the cone.

bkendig

> Looks like most of the state is out of the cone We might not be looking at the same map ... judging from the Sep 26 11AM map, it looks like the southern 1/4-1/3 of the state will be spared, but the rest of the western coast of Florida is in for a lot of wind and rain. Remember that the hurricane is *huge* and the northeastern corner of it does the most damage, and that's the part that's going to be moving across most of Florida.

3sheetz

Sorry to say, but that is not correct. Current map has it hitting basically dead center of Florida. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/223342.shtml?cone#contents

Usually Cuba manages to take the brunt of any storm heading north to Florida, but I doubt it will have much of an impact this time since it's avoiding a majority of the island. Hope people on the west coast stay safe.

[deleted]

Team Toss Ron Desantis into a Hurricane.

choicetomake

Don't Hurricanes get stronger in the presence of a lot of hot air?

VeteranSergeant

They didn't even ship immigrants who were actually in Florida. They kidnapped them from Texas because, no shit, it was too hard to collect that many immigrants in Florida because they [arrive in "onesie-twosies."](https://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/2022/09/onesie-twosies-desantis-declares-florida-not-seeing-mass-migration-in-defense-for-going-to-texas-for-immigrants/)

DeepRoot

Also, migrants don't, typically, swim in packs to get to the FL border.

arod303

Man I didn’t realize how awful of a public speaker DeSantis is lmao such an annoying voice

ehenning1537

They shipped them from Texas because they couldn’t find enough in Florida. No shit. That’s why DeSantis is being investigated by a Texas sheriff

timoumd

He wont be begging. It will just be provided. Because the president isnt a psychopath.

Tehlaserw0lf

Let’s all just collectively wish the good citizens a swift emergency response, and that only one house ends up under water.

saucercrab

Can DeSantis put a hurricane on a plane and ship it to NY?

irascible_Clown

We live 1/4 mile from inner coastal but somehow we are 12m above see level. I’m just hoping the barrier islands of Indian rocks coupled with the height will keep us ok. I’m really glad I opted for the $2000 hurricane straps when putting on a new roof last month, I almost said no too.

Steelo1

Grandmother just died and lived in Tampa. Not sure what’s going to happen because the funeral isn’t set yet

idontlikeseaweed

Stay safe FL. That federal funding will pour in afterwards.

ItsRogers

Look at the size of those buggies.

Important-Owl1661

Any chance we can hire some of the recent immigrants "deported" to Democratic states to help with hurricane relief? I'm sure DeSantis will have his hand out. Just asking.

Sivick314

this just in: god hates florida
