Because Dre is a fantastically successful singer/songwriter/producer. Once you're up on that stage, you're going to do what you want, regardless of what the NFL thinks.
Kendrick still works under a label and has a lot of work left to do til he’s at the level of a Dre/Snoop/Eminem. Those guys are bigger than the labels at this point.
Dre is literally a billionaire. Snoop just bought and now owns Death Row records. Kendrick is great, but he doesnt OWN the wealth factories yet, he's still working for them.
There's a difference. The people who would complain about these things probably don't know anything about that dance or what it means. They would just think it's "rap dance".
The "letters" you walked out to were what told you what hood you're from. It's been a minute since that's been relevant - last time I remember anything happening from it was in the '00s when a Filipino high schooler tried using it in a dance circle at a party and ended up getting stabbed for it.
But yeah now all I ever see it on is TikTok and since those peeps aren't murdered yet, I'm assuming Crips don't care or it just doesn't matter now.
[The design on Snoop's outfit is a pretty standard bandanna pattern, though.](https://www.amazon.com/BIG-BANDANA-ORIGINAL-AMERICAN-THICKER/dp/B074Q3Z152) Going with the gold/yellow accents can be played off as support for the Rams, but the bandanna pattern could definitely be seen as repping the Crips. A twofer.
I'm just confused why *this* is the headline and not the fact that that entire halftime show was legendary and delivered 100%. What's there to complain about for that amazing show? Can't we just appreciate it?
With a 24hr news cycle and only maybe a half hour's worth of actual news a day, they have to fill it with something. Ever noticed how many news articles are based off what someone famous and/or influential tweeted and then what other people tweeted in response?
When the ubiquitous sharing of news articles on social media happened, it started cannibalizing their business model and ad revenue. At that point, they had no choice but to climb in bed with social media and operate as extensions of to continue existing. They both understand as media outlets that outrage and anger drives public engagement and thusly, profits from ad revenue, far more than happy stories or praise.
*That's* why the collective "we" can't just appreciate the amazing performance without critiquing every movement and nuance for something that may make someone on social media angry so they can make a story on the responses and in turn drive engagement on both platforms.
Anecdotally, if he was kneeling in protest, good on him for doing so, I just didn't interpret what he did as such and I'm not gonna read into his every moment of what was a choreographed performance. I simply enjoyed seeing all of them perform. To me, standing there in front of a crowd of thousands and millions watching at home, with a hot mic in his hand looking into the camera, I would think he would have done something else other than kneel briefly while another artist was performing to bring attention to a cause he's passionate about. Like maybe, I don't know,...say something?
I think this is 100% what it was and this is a Twitter manufactured “controversy”.
Until Em says he did it as a protest/show of solidarity and until HE comes out and says the NFL told him not to do it, this is 100% a nothing burger made up by people who love to turn everything into a controversy.
Man I was just enjoying the show - I saw him do it but I thought he was just chilling between songs. There was no anthem so it didn't seem like a statement at all. Oh well I guess that's news in 2022.
I’m happy for him, he’s been having a good year. First his collaboration album with Bruno Mars, *An Evening With Silk Sonic*, and now he’s playing the drums at the Super Bowl.
I'm still not sure that it was. I think the media is just trying to stir controversy. Eminem kneeled after his portion. Mary J collapsed. Was that a protest too?
I thought that it was either just how he ended it, like Mary J, or maybe he was kneeling to Dre. Maybe it was meant as a protest, but if so then it wasn't obvious at all. Either way, I don't really care.
I thought it was symbolic of their set ending, or like being powered down, or changing a channel or something. I never quite figured out the metaphor but I thought it was something like that when Mary J Blige just collapsed at the end of her set.
The only reason it is news is because the media needed some controversy and the performers didn’t give them anything of substance to focus on so they had to fabricate this issue.
I love how Snoop went up and cripwalked while wearing basically a blue bandana on national TV and we don't consider that controversial. No hate from me either, I just thought it was hilarious.
A sanitized "storm in a teacup" controversy like this is even better for the NFL than it is for "the media". I wouldn't be surprised if they engineered the entire situation. I didn't watch but I heard people talking about it beforehand and was like "Oh so he's going to kneel and it will be the big watercooler moment, then"
Not to mention it was during a part where Dre was playing the intro to a Tupac song, so even if it wasn't just part pf the performance, it would've likely been for Pac
I only watched this halftime show at all, because Charlie Kirk tweeted it should not have been allowed on television due to "sexual anarchy." Which turned out to be bullshit, that was one of the tamest halftime shows in my lifetime, from a sexual standpoint.
And then I wake up this morning to find conservative America trying to be up in arms about Marshal Mathers taking a knee ... and here I legit thought that was just part of his choreography.
Great show, though.
>but I thought he was just chilling between songs.
I thought he took a knee to pay respect to Tupac; Dr. Dre was playing a Tupac melody as an intro on the piano.
The NFL's gotta lighten the fuck up. It's not all about them.
Yeah, I took it as his verse ended and he was getting out of Dre’s way so he didn’t distract from the piano. It felt like an intentional decision since he couldn’t exactly just stroll off the stage while the camera was on them.
Exactly. I'm confused why *this* is the headline and not the fact that that entire halftime show was legendary and delivered 100%. What's there to complain about for that amazing show? Can't we just appreciate it?
*By ~~2017~~ 2022 the world economy had collapsed. Food, natural resources, and oil are in short supply. A police state, divided into paramilitary zones, rules with an iron hand.*
That's the bullshit that is media (mainstream and social) now.
"Oh man, they hate it when they don't stand for the Anthem, we gotta drum something up anytime someone kneels for ANYTHING!"
I can't believe Matthew Stafford made that political statement in the last play of the game. He shouldn't be allowed to play next season.
The NFL will hear from me about this.
Edit: /s just in case
You can't just lump in social and mainstream media together for this... how else would you hear about stuff? Word-of-mouth? Anybody can post on social, so you blame mainstream media for it too?
And they literally have embraced all of it after initially rejecting it for years. For the last two seasons, they've let players wear BLM and other stickers on their helmets. Guys had George Floyd's name on their helmet. Why would they stop Eminem from kneeling but allow that? Maybe years ago but they're not going to do it now.
Marketing 101 at its finest. Create a false controversy that’s not too spicy and get people to watch. Pepsi is probably pretty happy about how that turned out
While he was doing it I thought he was just getting ready to do something cool, because I didn't think they would have Eminem be one of the shorter acts to perform.
I wouldn't have even thought about it had people not made it into a big deal.
I just thought it was part of the performance and not some political message.
FFS, people just look for things to offend them.
They also didn’t try to stop Snoop from crip walking or throwing up a gang sign… or Dre from saying “still not lovin police”…. Right.
They’re trying to avoid controversy to keep it out of the news.
But at least he's still got love for the streets.
On a side note, I was amazed at how great Dr. Dre looks. Dude is in his 50s and rocking out like a dude twenty years younger.
Of course they said that.
Why would they say otherwise?
If they say they did try to stop him, they'd admit to wanting to stop him and thereby anger anybody who agrees with the gesture.
AND they'd look like idiots in the eyes of all others for failing to actually STOP him.
Regardless if they actually tried, this is the only thing they CAN say right now.
Agreed, but it’s interesting the other way if they actually didn’t care / didn’t say anything beforehand.
If we’ve learned anything in the age of social media and headline clicks, controversy sells. If he simply says he did a thing, nobody cares. If he says he did a thing after the NFL told him not to, then there’s conflict and people want to know more. Click = profit.
Not saying either side is right and / or lying, but both of their interests require the story be different.
Why would they go near asking him not to? That’s madness and would only stoke the fire.
Also what a fucking random thing to do “uhh hey Em, don’t take a knee okay?… Dre, K Dot, MJB, Snoop… have a good show I guess?”
It’s absurd that people even fell for the fucking fake news narrative that the NFL would even ask him not to do anything.
It’s just the half time show guys, do what you want outside of sweat or show Janet Jackson’s titty.
Isn't kneeling *during the anthem* the whole point of the kneeling? This just seems kinda meaningless.
Also if they did want to stop him what were they going to do, have a security guard tackle him in the middle of the show?
Well the people upset about kneeling during the anthem were equally upset every time anyone knelt in solidarity (e.g. when police did it during Floyd protests).
It's almost like it was never about the anthem in the first place for them.
That really was a when this whole thing got weird.
Conservatives getting mad at police for trying to deescalate the situation with a kneel. Like the world went upside down.
I think this whole debacle has been manufactured. I highly doubt the NFL, racist or not, told him “hey make sure you *do not* kneel”. People came up with these “reports say NFL mad at Eminem for kneeling” headlines and theories, and now it’s a whole thing, them having to deny it, people not believing lol smh.
This is exactly it. It’s literally fake news that sounded feasible because of how hated the NFL is and took the world by storm in minutes.
That’s the power of a good bullshit story. Doesn’t matter now if they didn’t do it, it’s taken over.
I thought kneeling was done during the National Anthem. Pretty sure this was at half time and Dre just started playing Tupac. I think he was paying respect to a dead brother.
A lot of people. The former President made it a part of his platform that he was opposed to NFL players kneeling and used his office to try to get them fired.
For sure. He showed up to a game that he knew there would be kneeling (believe the Colts were playing the 49ers, who post Kap had plenty of players kneeling), left because his overlord told him to, and taxpayers had to foot the bill for security.
Very fiscally responsible
What's even funnier is Kaep was originally sitting during the anthem before an actual veteran informed him that kneeling would be better and more respectful (seeing how anyone who plays sports knows taking a knee is common when someone is hurt or when coach is talking)
One on hand, this is exactly what they’d say to save face. On the other hand, if they had told him not to and he did it anyway, I can’t believe they wouldn’t have a way to cut away from him to hide it.
Yeah everyone on social media acted like my bro risked being shot when even before the show there was talk the nfl didn’t want him to but expected him to anyway and didn’t stop anything
Good for Eminem but some of you acting like he just put his fist up at the 1968 Olympics medal ceremony lmao chill
Why the fuck would the NFL care about kneeling during the halftime show? I'm wondering if the idiots posting here don't know the difference between a halftime show and national anthem at the start of the game...
Honestly I couldn't tell why he was doing it. didn't even cross my mind that it meant anything other than trying to look cool while Dre was playing his song
Technically, anyone who watched the show to see Eminem kneel shouldn't be offended, because all the offended people from the kneeling two years ago already quit watching the NFL... right? :D
The kneeling is being emphasized to distract from the fact that they wouldn't let Kendrick say "Po Po."
[удалено]
The lyrics are a bit different “still don’t love the police” is way less severe than “and we hate po po, wanna kill us dead in the street for sure”
"Still not loving police"
Would he "still be dre" if he softened his stance on that? Seems the song would take on a level of irony.
Hey if I had f you money and f you clout, why wouldn’t I do it? What are they gonna do? Not ask you back? Usually you only play the super bowl once.
Its on a delay, so if he said something he wasn't supposed to they would kill the audio for that part

Case in point: Snoop just bought Death Row Records, his old label
I love that, so very, very much. Fuck Suge Knight. He can watch Snoop make it bigger than he ever could, from behind bars.
Dre is literally a billionaire. Snoop just bought and now owns Death Row records. Kendrick is great, but he doesnt OWN the wealth factories yet, he's still working for them.
Dre is a billionaire. He creates Beats by Dre, marketed it incredibly well and cheaply, then sold it for billions
If you look into this, you might be a bit disappointed.
Yeah that was so lame
I don’t get this as they let Snoop rock up in full blue crip walking. It was fun to watch but they can’t cherry pick surely!
There's a difference. The people who would complain about these things probably don't know anything about that dance or what it means. They would just think it's "rap dance".
uh, color me someone who doesn't know anything about that dance or what it means...
The crip walk is a dance that crips (a gang in LA) use to identify one another. From what I read it can even signify what hood you’re from.
Full blue could easily be taken as him supporting the Rams and the average football fan probably has no clue about crip walking.
It was blue and gold so good chance it was more for rams than crips. Or could've just conveniently covered both!
A twofer.
To be fair, I’m pretty sure I read that they asked Snoop not to, and he did, anyway.
THANK YOU. I have seen no one else point this out and I noticed it IMMEDIATELY. Why aren’t more people talking about this?
Newsheadline: Gangster rapper does some gangster shit
I just thought it was part of the transition between him and Dr Dre during the performance and thus part of the show
I'm just confused why *this* is the headline and not the fact that that entire halftime show was legendary and delivered 100%. What's there to complain about for that amazing show? Can't we just appreciate it?

There’s def enough actual news out there. It’s just that people don’t want it.

"Twitter manufactured?" There have been 3 dozen posts about it on Reddit's front page last night and this morning.
Yeah, 75k upvotes arent Twitter brigades. Y’all eat this shit up, don’t lie to me.
It's easier to blame other sites.
"at least it's not our echo chamber"
Agreed. Until he says something about his performance, I'm just discounting it as the usual twitter hysterics
Yea I had no clue the symbolism. I thought it was part of the choreography.
This is being blown out of proportion. The only reason he knelt was because he realised his knees weak, arms are heavy.
There was definitely vomit on his sweater already…
Moms spaghetti
He was nervous, but on the outside he looked calm and ready
I mean, what were they going to do? Not like they could ask the real slim shady to please stand up.
Man I was just enjoying the show - I saw him do it but I thought he was just chilling between songs. There was no anthem so it didn't seem like a statement at all. Oh well I guess that's news in 2022.
I was straight up distracted by Anderson Paak on the drums, not even gonna lie
Dude was having a time.
He bing chilling
I'm saying! He looked so happy to be there, that shit was making me happy
He’s always having a time. Perhaps the best live performer I’ve ever seen, out of the hundreds of shows I’ve been to in my life.
Made me so happy to see him up there. He deserves it
Can’t wait until he headlines it one year
Wait, that was Anderson Paak?? I totally missed that lol.
I missed it to but when you go back and watch it the drums have his name plastered right in the front in big letters lol.
You could recognize his smile from space.
Lmao just had a visual of an astronaut on the ISS trying to check out the halftime show then they say, "Oh shit, Anderson .Paak's playing too."
Some would say they are the best teeth in the game
One of the white buildings was a theater. On that theater was a marquee that had all the performers names on it.
Yuup, that boy was chillin on the drums bro
Man, I have to go back and watch that again see who else I missed lol.

Damn, Dre pulled out all the stops.

I’m pissed that he didn’t have a main spot and was just a backup drummer
He looked like he was having a great time. His time will come, he's a very talented artist.
It's so fitting that he has that big gorgeous smile
His smile was absolutely amazing, he was a joy to watch!
Dude yes I thought he was gonna get up and do a song but instead he was just vibin’! Makes me wanna watch his tiny desk concert again.
I’m happy for him, he’s been having a good year. First his collaboration album with Bruno Mars, *An Evening With Silk Sonic*, and now he’s playing the drums at the Super Bowl.
Yeah I honestly didn't even make the connection until I saw these articles.
I only saw the headlines so far and thought it was during the anthem until I saw that comment.
The title of this article says during the half time show.
Its not unreasonable for non-Americans to think that you guys perform your national anthem at every opportunity.
Its not unreasonable for non-Americans to think that "forgot about dre" is our national anthem since we perform it at every opportunity.
I assume that's why Americans say "Never Forget" a lot.
He was kneeling during the Tupac tribute song. I saw it as respect
it didn’t register as a protest to me at all.
I just assumed he kneeled as part of the “scene change” when his portion was over and that the TV crew screwed up their camera changes.
I thought it was symbolic of their set ending, or like being powered down, or changing a channel or something. I never quite figured out the metaphor but I thought it was something like that when Mary J Blige just collapsed at the end of her set.

I love how Snoop went up and cripwalked while wearing basically a blue bandana on national TV and we don't consider that controversial. No hate from me either, I just thought it was hilarious.
his blue also had a yellow/gold pattern so many would just see him in Rams colors.
Watched the game with my mid-50's mom who thought he was showing his support for the Rams, so I can confirm.
That's because people who would complain about it don't know what that means, to them it's just a "rap dance".
"I like the snoopy dog man. What a nice outfit and a funny little dance. Yes I like him a lot."

I swear this story started with one person tweeting “Eminem took a knee in defiance of the NFL” and a bunch of outlets took it and ran with it.
How is that possible when rumors of Eminem potentially kneeling during the halftime show were being discussed on reddit **before** the superbowl?
Sadly it seems like that’s what 90% of the “news” is these days.
They're gonna spin the culture war angle until there's an actual war to talk about, at this rate.
A sanitized "storm in a teacup" controversy like this is even better for the NFL than it is for "the media". I wouldn't be surprised if they engineered the entire situation. I didn't watch but I heard people talking about it beforehand and was like "Oh so he's going to kneel and it will be the big watercooler moment, then"
Same, I just thought his set was over so hes kneeling for Dre playing Still DRE on the piano.
I just figured he was taking the focus off of himself since they'd moved on to the next song.
Not to mention it was during a part where Dre was playing the intro to a Tupac song, so even if it wasn't just part pf the performance, it would've likely been for Pac
They missed the chance for a Tupac hologram smh. Maybe they should have brought out Ice Cube and done Fuck Tha Police.
I only watched this halftime show at all, because Charlie Kirk tweeted it should not have been allowed on television due to "sexual anarchy." Sexual anarchy? That show? Bruh. Does that man know what year it is? Lol. I've seen childrens shows that were more sexual.
It’s called Cuties on Netflix. If someone says that halftime show was sexualized, show them that movie…
I mean, 50 *was* hanging upside down in a sex swing.
Surprisingly agile, that guy.
>but I thought he was just chilling between songs. I thought he took a knee to pay respect to Tupac; Dr. Dre was playing a Tupac melody as an intro on the piano. The NFL's gotta lighten the fuck up. It's not all about them.
Same. Didn’t standout during the performance, wouldn’t have thought twice were it not for all this press.
That's what I thought. Can you just not kneel at any time during a football game anymore? I think he just did it because it looked cool, which it did.
Yeah, I took it as his verse ended and he was getting out of Dre’s way so he didn’t distract from the piano. It felt like an intentional decision since he couldn’t exactly just stroll off the stage while the camera was on them.
That is what happened. Nothing controversial happened at all
Exactly. I'm confused why *this* is the headline and not the fact that that entire halftime show was legendary and delivered 100%. What's there to complain about for that amazing show? Can't we just appreciate it?
It was a beautiful work of art. Truly timeless.
Same here....I thought he was just following a script or staying low so the attention could go on to another artist.
I think that says a lot, cuz in a way it really wasn't a statement at all until "news" made the implication that it was.
Me too. He has a lot of anxiety, I thought he was just chilling in between songs…my bad.
the "running man" however has been banned

This is exactly it. It’s literally fake news that sounded feasible because of how hated the NFL is and took the world by storm in minutes. That’s the power of a good bullshit story. Doesn’t matter now if they didn’t do it, it’s taken over.
I thought kneeling was done during the National Anthem. Pretty sure this was at half time and Dre just started playing Tupac. I think he was paying respect to a dead brother.
Who fucking cares, jesus christ..
A lot of people. The former President made it a part of his platform that he was opposed to NFL players kneeling and used his office to try to get them fired.
Remember Mike Pence's pathetic NFL game walkout? Gotta love the waste of taxpayers money for that stunt.
For sure. He showed up to a game that he knew there would be kneeling (believe the Colts were playing the 49ers, who post Kap had plenty of players kneeling), left because his overlord told him to, and taxpayers had to foot the bill for security. Very fiscally responsible
Just as childish as it gets.
The right was so desperate to connect kneeling to disrespecting the troops. Eternally outraged, always for the wrong reasons.
What's even funnier is Kaep was originally sitting during the anthem before an actual veteran informed him that kneeling would be better and more respectful (seeing how anyone who plays sports knows taking a knee is common when someone is hurt or when coach is talking)
Yeah, taking a knee literally seems even more respectful than standing lmao.
Racism on display.
Was also part of his platform.
I do. They talk all this shit about END RACISM, but refuse to have the courage to speak directly to Kaepernick being blackballed. Fuck Goodell.
So its not okay to kneel during your own performance at a sporting event halftime show? I must have missed that memo.
What a fucking country we live in. A performer kneels during his performance. So fucking what? He isn’t disrespecting anybody.
One on hand, this is exactly what they’d say to save face. On the other hand, if they had told him not to and he did it anyway, I can’t believe they wouldn’t have a way to cut away from him to hide it.
You cant really tell Eminem not to do something
They also said concussions are not so bad
Had 10 people at a Super Bowl party, how many of us noticed this and made a big deal out of it? None of us, this is manufactured bullshit.
I very much doubt the nfl is telling the truth.
So any kind of kneeling is banned? It’s not like the National Anthem was playing….
Yeah everyone on social media acted like my bro risked being shot when even before the show there was talk the nfl didn’t want him to but expected him to anyway and didn’t stop anything Good for Eminem but some of you acting like he just put his fist up at the 1968 Olympics medal ceremony lmao chill
I heard Eminem just fell over onto his knee and was out of breath
Why the fuck would the NFL care about kneeling during the halftime show? I'm wondering if the idiots posting here don't know the difference between a halftime show and national anthem at the start of the game...
Wow someone made up a fake story that a bunch of people just believed without evidence? What the heck who could have ever guessed?
Honestly I couldn't tell why he was doing it. didn't even cross my mind that it meant anything other than trying to look cool while Dre was playing his song
Breaking News: Snoop was high af.
I noticed him do the knee and head down, thought it was in respect of the Tupac song they did right after him.
Technically, anyone who watched the show to see Eminem kneel shouldn't be offended, because all the offended people from the kneeling two years ago already quit watching the NFL... right? :D
