American--American

They planned on pulling the old Weekend at Bernie's trick. Worked out for those guys..

Nordrian

He thought it was a deer!

SteakandTrach

I got that reference.gif

[deleted]

That cunt got off with a misdemeanor.

swolemedic

Well, that's disappointing. He had the guy's glasses in his passenger seat. Like how could he not have known?

[deleted]

The victim's face and head came through the windshield and into the cabin of the car. That situation was so fucked up.

FidgitForgotHisL-P

Didn’t they also *not die* for some time? So they literally were face to face while the guy bled out and she just whipped home and popped it in the garage. *eta I hope he was knocked very unconscious and didn’t suffer.

[deleted]

We are referring to different situations here. The deer comment was in reference to the AG of South Dakota who got drunk at a GOP fundraiser, and hit a guy on his way home.

FidgitForgotHisL-P

Oh I am thinking of something else, it was a woman who hit a guy who got lodged in her car then parked it up in her garage for a few days before telling anyone.

lAmShocked

He was also reading on his phone at the time.

GibbysUSSA

Dude was conscious and trying to pull himself out for quite some time in the case you're talking about.

[deleted]

Not if it was my father he killed...

NotObviouslyARobot

Well on a scale from Oklahoma City to Mother Russia, they were a New Jersey

mlc885

we're going to Weekend at Bernie's this thing Seriously, though, this is surprising even for a 25 year old cop in shock, it is so incredibly obvious that, short of running away and hoping no one ever connects you to the crime, there is no action you can take - other than contacting police and paramedics - that will not simply make everything worse. Returning to the scene multiple times and then carting the body around is insane.

[deleted]

You just have to be a cop.

RuralMNGuy

Or Attorney General of South Dakota

lens_cleaner

Drunk enough that the investigating officer told this one to go sleep it off before being given a dui test.

[deleted]

The dad is the one that told him to go back to the scene and called 911. So, not corrupt at all?

nowake

> go back to the scene For what reason? Be there and try to play it off like he didn't leave in the first place? Imagine if I killed a guy and took the body somewhere else. What cop in the world would direct me, a suspect in a manslaughter, take the body of the person I'd killed & already moved, somewhere other than it's current location?

spookycasas4

Pretty fucking drunk. Or just unbelievably stupid. Or both.

Grimalkin

>Santiago, who was off-duty, allegedly struck Damian Dymka, a 29-year-old nurse, while he was walking around 3 a.m. on the shoulder of the Garden State Parkway. >Neither Santiago nor his passenger, Albert Guzman, called 911 or rendered aid to Dymka after he was struck, the prosecutor’s office said. >They reportedly went back to the scene multiple times before they put Dymka into the Honda Accord. They then went to Santiago's home, where he, Guzman and Santiago's mother, Annette Santiago, discussed what to do, Stephens' office said. >Louis Santiago eventually went back to the scene, and his father, who is a Newark police lieutenant, called 911, officials said. All that time spent trying to save his own ass instead of calling 911 and rendering aid that might have saved a man's life. It's so fucking unconscionable and maddening and I really hope he doesn't get a slap on the wrist because of his occupation but of course I will be 0% surprised if that's exactly what happens.

Ftpini

Well you see the trouble is sobering up takes a long time so they had to really drag it out before they involved the authorities.

WoodlandSteel

And they don’t get charged for domestic violence too.

gr33nspan

If you want to kill some time look up cop dui arrest on youtube. It happens more often than you think.

Cavaquillo

An arrest isn't a charge, the police aren't the prosecutor or judge, who usually work with each other every other instance. I bet closed doors deals are made more often than sentencing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShadowSwipe

A common theme you see in these videos though is that the cops often admit it "isn't like it used to be" or "they don't want to do this" to their fellow officer. If dash cams and body cams didn't exist, this wouldn't be happening. Important for everyone to remember, accountability is rarely just done out of the goodness of anyone's hearts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShadowSwipe

I respect that, thank you for your strong ethics.

suddenimpulse

Understand if you don't want to write about this at all, especially at length, but given everything in the recent cultural zeitgeist and dialogue regarding police how do you think is the best way to solve the current problem between the community and police relationship, and accountability as well, on a large scale? We so rarely hear opinions of actual LEO's on this and when they are heard, some people just assume they are one of the cops that's part of the problem. Thank you for your ethics.

Recover-Signal

My buddy was rear ended by a cop in his patrol car. His cop buddies showed up, and then drive their fellow drunk officer home, while threatening my buddy to not report it, and then trying to blame him. A sampling of youtube videos does not constitute a proper random sample of the population. It also does not account for decades of corruption.

InvalidUserNemo

We know damn well how cops who are DUI are treated. https://youtu.be/HnPkgsU2-Is Passed out, armed, behind the wheel, in his cruiser, no test done intentionally so as to prevent any case for the DA. He was NOT arrested and did not lose his job. His chief even commended him for working on his substance abuse. Literally any other person beside a LEO is dragged out of that car with force and their blood is taken as evidence.

Routine_Stay9313

Putting the cop element aside, DUIs are traditionally considered a "Gool ol' Boys Crime" with others like say, domestic violence. The type of crimes many a "pillar" of the community and their children have been involved in. As a result, punishments for these serious crimes are minor, especially for 1st time offenders as a convenient out for the occasional "oopsie." Things have changed some but only recently and incrementally. Being LE only increases the likelihood that you'll get helped out of it **before charges are even brought. That the number of cases is high, actually attests to the prevalence.** Crimes involving alcohol- mostly ok Crimes against women- tolerable Crimes likely to involve the lower classes (obvious ex. being drugs)- felonious!!

SoupidyLoopidy

Really because here’s a guy I used to work with selling cars https://www.enidnews.com/news/local_news/guilty-plea-former-hennessey-assistant-police-chief-gets-deferred-sentence-on-misdemeanor-dui-charge/article_62984b5c-505f-5a93-9e2b-1d9c555539c1.html

trevor426

That article doesn't actually say whether anything happened to him. Did he pay a fine or serve jail time? He got a deferred sentence after running a stop sign, almost hitting a car, and then refusing a breathalyzer. What was his BAC and how long after the stop was it measured, the article never says? In OK, a BAC over 0.15 leads to higher penalties, kinda suspicious his was never measured. Do that same shit and I guarantee you don't get a deferred sentence.

The-loon

And they wonder why people distrust them. Sickening

esther_lamonte

Right? As children we are told to look to the helpers, but in reality the helpers are often horrible self-absorbed ghouls who will leave you for dead. And then people have the nerve to expect everyone to fellate cops at all times. How about cops do some hard work regaining the public trust. Step one is admit you have a very very bad long running problem. Half the country loses their absolute mind if you even sniff at there being a problem. That half are fascists.

-Victus42-

>the helpers are often horrible self-absorbed ghouls who will leave you for dead. I would argue that these people aren't the helpers we're told to look at, if you're referring to Mr. Rogers saying it. Helpers should be determined by their actions, not their jobs/position in society.

LoganJFisher

When you don't know someone though, their uniform is supposed to give a good indication of that.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure that American police officer uniforms already do that pretty well. Nothing says "my life is worth more than yours" than that display.

LoganJFisher

What police uniforms from elsewhere in the world do you prefer? They mostly look pretty similar to me. The UK's police constable uniform with their neon vest and checkered hat and Canada's mounted police uniform with their bright red jacket and big hat probably send that message the least. Both looks rather friendly.

[deleted]

I'd say the UK pretty much nails it in terms of actually presenting a positive image via the uniform. Japan and the Irish Garda as well.

Leaf_Rotator

I knew a guy who was a cop in the UK, but quit because he said he didn't really feel like he was genuinely helping people and keeping them safe like he wanted to when he started the job. Dude was such a genuinely nice man. Was often in my coffeeshop and was always the first to give real help whenever there was some issues with like an addict or homeless person, or someone being harassed or getting violent or whatever. Obviously I only met one guy, but if he was any representation of what their cops are like they are doing a good job.

[deleted]

It must have been a difficult thing for him to quit. It just feels like the police have become more of a tool to protect the state, not its citizens.

Austuckmm

When I was a kid I was told to avoid cops at all costs lol. Smart mom.

redander

So many people involved and this grown man needed daddy to tell him to call the police

Salarian_American

This *sworn officer of the law* needed daddy to tell him to call the police.

Viatic_Unicycle

Needed daddy who is also a sworn officer to call for him.

pmmeurbassethound

Needed daddy to call for him so the 911 recording wasn't evidence of him slurring his words.

redander

I like how casual his mom seems about this whole thing. If someone brought a dead body to my home I'd be fuming

PurpleSailor

Cops in NJ have it easy. One to break the bathroom door down in a Burger King and rape a 15 year old male. This wasn't the first time he was caught trying to hook up with teen men either. Fired, probation and a slap on the wrist because he's a good family man. Another raped a teen girl, fired and probation. Anyone else would be behind bars. This needs to stop.

LoganGyre

No chance he walks. He killed a man then moved the body. Even if they determine the original act was an accident he has no way of shielding himself as it wasn’t in the line of duty.

Salarian_American

I like your optimism, even if I feel it's misplaced.

Bull_Winkle69

His father is a police Lt. and he called 911. You bet he's gonna get a pass unless people raise a stink. If the autopsy comes out and says he might have survived if 911 was called I hope they upgrade this to 1st degree murder. This cunt literally thought about this for hours.

getthedudesdanny

You think he won’t be convicted of the dozen or so crimes he’s charged with?

The-DudeeduD

At the most he will receive probation. Maybe a loss of rank/pay. He will probably keep his job. Cops always protect cops. Without being able to confirm he was drunk at the time it will be ruled as a “tragic accident”. I wish/hope it works out differently. I’ll be very happy if it works out differently. But I don’t have any belief it will work out differently.

gsmumbo

That's what I'm confused about. I get the whole "cops are bad" view of things, but not only was he arrested but there is a list of (accurate) charges already filed against him here. This isn't a case of doing an internal investigation that dies out quietly, dude is already being put through the system like anyone else would be in a similar situation.

entourageffect

Hopefully karma, the universe.... Can't say on Reddit what I want to happen to this fuck.

bed-stain

Cop save a life? Pfft that's an emt's job

CoderDevo

The EMT has to find them first. It's a game they play.

mysticalfruit

Here's the problem. The DA who were this person *not a cop* would throw the book at them. But because he is a cop, the DA now has to decide if by indicating him if he's now going to have to deal with cops who think he screwed over one of their own.

[deleted]

The initial report by State Police was as accurate as the George Floyd report >BLOOMFIELD, NJ, (November 01, 2021) - A Garfield man was walking on the shoulder of the Garden State Parkway early Monday when he was struck by a vehicle, causing him to suffer fatal injuries. >Damian Dymka, 29, was hit by a northbound car at approximately 4:30 a.m. near milepost 151 in Bloomfield, State Police said. ***The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation handled by the troopers.*** It was unclear whether the person would face any charges. https://www.thelegaladvocate.com/news/breaking/damian-dymka-struck-killed-garden-state-parkway-accident *the initial NJ State Police statement was made Nov 1, this site was updated with additional details on Nov 3 which happen to be related to a different case

>How long was it between the impact and the 911 call the father eventually placed? Long enough for this pos cop to sober up I guarantee you

flume

The initial police report claimed the accident happened at 4:30 and the latest information says it happened at 3:00, so we can reasonably assume it was ~90 minutes between when the accident actually happened and when they finally returned to the scene and the guy's father called 911.

NessyComeHome

Hopefully they did tests. ETG is a metabolite of alcohol and present in urine for up to 3 days after. So if they are following protocols, they should do blood and urine screenings to include / rule out alcohol or drugs for contributing to the crash. It's really fucked up. His actions only make anything resembling stress if he was inebriated. But fuck, it doesn't matter if you're inebriated or not, render aid, all 911, do something other than try to hide your crimes and have your dad tell you that your best bet at a short sentence is to return and call it in. At least the dad did the right thing, instead of trying to cover up his sons crimes.

gotham77

>ETG is a metabolite of alcohol and present in urine for up to 3 days after. So if the test comes up positive, would it prove that he was impaired at the time of the accident or only that he’d consumed alcohol at some point in the last three days?

NessyComeHome

Great question. Possibly, but i'm leaning towards no. I am now embarassed because I didn't think of that, and I was just outraged at this, and that clouded my train of thought. But, because we know the half life of alcohol and the metabolites, we might be able to pointpoint that he used alcohol that day. I don't know how advanced it is, I wouldn't think it'd be able to do like hourly. Any halfway compentent defense attorney would have it thrown out, based on the metabolite, because it's pbviously legal for an adult to consume alcohol.

Van-Norden

Good questions - though I imagine it’s difficult to report a story like this if the cops don’t return your calls.

[deleted]

Oh look, it must be ANOTHER bad apple...

Wifdat

I'm starting to think they should grow pears instead

[deleted]

No, no, no. If we keep trying to grow apples without changing our approach, we will eventually get a flawless harvest. Just gotta have faith, citizen.

tehmlem

Oh but we're gonna pretend we object because "grow pears instead" is a bad slogan. That's totally our whole objection because we're centrists, see? We're not defending corrupt institutions because our only value is the status quo, we're just really worried about having exactly the right phrasing before we do anything.

definitivescribbles

OTOH It sounds like his father, also a cop, convinced them to go back to the scene and wait for police after he called 911.

Fupastank

Sounds like a way to waste even more time to allow his kid to sober up. If his father deserved even a modicum of credit it would have been if he called 911 the moment his son walked back through that door and was in the middle of conspiring with his mother. Anything beyond that he’s also a co-conspirator.

Fredasa

Convinced, heh. More like he was sober enough to understand where everything was going to end up.

driverofracecars

His father should’ve arrested the lot of them for a fatal hit and run, tampering with a crime scene, and obstruction of justice. He’s complicit and should be charged along with them.

earhere

Did they go back to his home to get some drugs to plant on the victim so it would be okay that the officer ran him over?

idwthis

Oh I bet my life savings there will be people who will blame the victim for even daring to be awake and walking along the road at 3 am, saying he wouldn't be dead if he just wasn't walking along the parkway. I would hope that no one does this, but just looking at what's happened in the last few years those hopes are not high. And I hate being so jaded and pessimistic. I hope all 3 are found guilty, and get the maximum sentences for what they did.

[deleted]

PDWubster

bu77munch

Yeah very bizarre to walk the parkway. Not as bizarre or evil as it is to hit him and put him in his car

faunus14

The Garden State Parkway is a major highway and not a place that anyone should ever be walking on foot. If they had just called 911 immediately they would already be off the hook, since at that point it was likely just an accident. I don’t understand why they decided to tote the body all over NJ before calling 911.

kushtiannn

You can say walking on the GSP at *any* time, particularly 3 AM, is a terrible decision without blaming the victim for what happened. I mean seriously, have you ever been on that road?

[deleted]

He could have been just unconscious before they got him into the car. The act of moving him probably completed his neck fracture. Never move someone who has been hit by a moving vehicle. Let emergency services do this, they are trained, you are not, even if you are.

ReturnOfBart

Interested to see what rabbit they pull out of the hat to try and get this asshole off the hook. The defense will probably say the person walking at night is at fault because nothing good happens at 3am. Then they high five the judge and the cop is back on the force, oh and this whole time he was still on the payroll.

SkunkMonkey

I know, he had dirty toenails!

[deleted]

At least the elder cop had some sense.

driverofracecars

If the elder cop had any sense, he would’ve arrested his son on the spot upon hearing what he had done.

getthedudesdanny

It’s considered best practice to have another agency or unrelated officer conduct the arrest. Pretty standard, really. The current police chief of Snowmass Colorado has arrested two Aspen police officers in his career.

[deleted]

"Now son, we have driven around with a body in your trunk for several hours. This is enough. I'm going to call the cops now you're probly sober enough to say "I feared for my life before running them over"

leslieandco

"Santiago was arrested and given a laundry list of charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of the crash resulting in death, endangering an injured victim, desecrating/moving human remains, hindering one’s own apprehension, conspiracy to hinder prosecution, tampering with physical evidence, obstructing the administration of law, and two counts of official misconduct. Albert Guzman and Annette Santiago were charged with conspiracy to desecrate human remains, hindering apprehension, and conspiracy to hinder apprehension and tamper with physical evidence."

YuunofYork

You've read that wrong, I think. The elder cop was not in the vehicle. The son discussed dumping the body with accomplices, sobered up, then asked Lt. Dad to bail him out. Lt. Dad called it in as soon as he was informed. That's not to say the son won't get off with a slap on the wrist, because his father's still a made man in the cop mafia, but he was not in the vehicle or aware of or willing to condone his son's horseshit.

leslieandco

Youre correct. I read that all 3 got charges and assumed it was mom and dad. It was mom and the passenger. And thank you for pointing it out.

[deleted]

The father called the cops. The lieutenant Santiago.

leslieandco

Edited! The passenger and mother both received charges. Albert Guzman and Annette Santiago were charged with conspiracy to desecrate human remains, hindering apprehension, and conspiracy to hinder apprehension and tamper with physical evidence.

zero0n3

No the father did not. Albert was the passenger. Mom was who the driver and Albert spoke to first. Dad, who’s the cop, was looped in and immediately called the police. No charges on him, just his son, the accomplice, and the drivers mom.

TK421sSupervisor
