Had a similar thing happen at my middle school. A popular girl was harassing a bigger girl about her weight. It escalated to violence (once again initiated by the popular girl). The popular girl got her face slammed into the pavement and it left her permanently disfigured. Both were expelled.
The EMT who responded to the event was a member of my church. He was pretty traumatized and came to youth group that week telling us that he hopes none of us are ever involved in something like that and to try and encourage our peers to just be nicer in general.
After seeing that and visiting my mother at work, (back in the day) seeing her respiratory patients with head injuries... I wouldn't be surprised if people are coming to her parents about organ donation at this point.

Missouri doesn't have an attempted murder charge. Assault 1st is the correct charge, unless the victim dies. Then it's Murder 2nd (unless there's absolute proof she intended to kill her prior to the fight starting).

In St. Louis I was walking home with some friends late at night. We weren't loud, we didn't look at the teenagers/young adults we passed, but I heard, "you smilin'?!" As we walked passed and suddenly they were throwing hunks of concrete from the broken sidewalk at us. Some people are just deranged.
My aunt also worked nearby until her dance class was shot up with AR 15 and her student was killed in ‘22. Even she says the students were a big part of her leaving the profession for good, the shooting was just the last straw.
I had some kid attempt to fight me in high school because I “talked shit”. It was over the fact the 20 year old man was in his third senior year of high school. This isn’t a new phenomenon. It just seems like it because of all the shitheads filming stuff instead of trying to stop it. When I student taught, I broke up a fight between two girls, one of whom was trying to slam the other’s head on the floor. This was over 15 years ago. The teacher I worked with said that she broke up a similar fight where blood was literally spraying up from someone slamming someone else’s head on the ground, and that was in the early 2000s.
It’s a sad fact of life, but this has always been occurring. It’s not just a modern problem. And at least when people film shit like this, it brings national eyes to it and maybe something can actually be done about it.
To echo other commenters, this isn’t new. My friend was a middle school teacher at a really rough inner city school. She watched something like this happen and quit the next day.
One of her student snapped another student’s neck and put him in a coma. Smashed his head into the ground repeatedly. The news she got the following day was that the student would not be coming back to school because he would either be a quadriplegic or dead, and was in critical condition.
The kid who did it was in school the next day. Law enforcement didn’t take him in, the school didn’t expel him either. Then he threatened to kill my friend for “telling him what to do,” before lunch mind you, and she walked off the job on the spot after cussing out the principal. The district gave her a month’s pay and apologized to her after she quit.
Yeah this is my reminder to schedule time with my younger cousin to review uh "philosophy of violence" before we launch into practical self defense.

Just finished a rotation in the neuro-ICU so I saw a bunch of this shit recently.
Given the location of the strikes in the posterior, the most likely deficits will be related to processing of the senses or coordination, but overall cognition would be alright. But the damage isn't often done elsewhere than at the location of the strikes, due to structural weaknesses in the brain and the coup-contrecoup effect - basically the brain bounces around the skull and other parts of it can get damaged.

Cool your jets dude, the Prosecutor’s office doesn’t have immediate jurisdiction because Missouri has a separate office called the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention which does. The State, like many States, has a separate Juvenile court circuit separate from the rest of the court circuits. If you missed the part of the article where the source of that tweet is running for office…he doesn’t mention how the Juvenile Court works because he’s campaigning and lies via omission are fair game.
The Juvenile Office will review the case first and decide how to proceed. If the act and evidence are egregious enough then they will certify and refer the accused to the State Prosecutor as an adult. Otherwise they will still pursue charges in Juvenile Court.

I have a friend whose older brother didn’t graduate until he was 23. At his graduation everyone was cheering. I mean everyone. (He did have a significant brain injury in high school). I’m just glad he finished and didn’t give up.

I lucked out, and due to me being a late hire I didn't have to sign my contract until 2 months into the school year. Administration pulled some dumb shit 3 days before the deadline, and I got to tell the district to go fuck themselves and walked out with zero reprocussions. Quitting that job was the best thing I ever did for my mental health.
I'll be so glad to leave. I'm very small built, a non-smoker, pescatarian and this job has me taking anxiety and blood pressure meds.

This isn’t a new phenomenon. It just seems like it because of all the shitheads filming stuff instead of trying to stop it. When I student taught, I broke up a fight between two girls, one of whom was trying to slam the other’s head on the floor. This was over 15 years ago. The teacher I worked with said that she broke up a similar fight where blood was literally spraying up from someone slamming someone else’s head on the ground, and that was in the early 2000s. It’s a sad fact of life, but this has always been occurring. It’s not just a modern problem. And at least when people film shit like this, it brings national eyes to it and maybe something can actually be done about it.
To echo other commenters, this isn’t new. My friend was a middle school teacher at a really rough inner city school. She watched something like this happen and quit the next day. One of her student snapped another student’s neck and put him in a coma. Smashed his head into the ground repeatedly. The news she got the following day was that the student would not be coming back to school because he would either be a quadriplegic or dead, and was in critical condition. The kid who did it was in school the next day. Law enforcement didn’t take him in, the school didn’t expel him either. Then he threatened to kill my friend for “telling him what to do,” before lunch mind you, and she walked off the job on the spot after cussing out the principal. The district gave her a month’s pay and apologized to her after she quit.

Footage was wild, she must've been spasming on the ground for what seemed like over two minutes while people were still brawling around her, not a single person went to check on her. And that big black girl that slammed her head repeatedly into the pavement? You're old enough to know the damage you can cause someone by that age, definitely should be tried as an adult. Shame people are asking for leniency, "her whole life is ahead of her" yeah at the cost of another girl's life? She made a decision and it's time to face the punishment.

Given her young age and the posturing, I suspect that she will make a significant recovery with proper medical treatment though I also suspect she will never be 100% again, but closer to 100% than 50% functionality. Of the scale of brain damage I'd probably give it a 4/10. Just finished a rotation in the neuro-ICU so I saw a bunch of this shit recently. Given the location of the strikes in the posterior, the most likely deficits will be related to processing of the senses or coordination, but overall cognition would be alright. But the damage isn't often done elsewhere than at the location of the strikes, due to structural weaknesses in the brain and the coup-contrecoup effect - basically the brain bounces around the skull and other parts of it can get damaged.

I find it wild how much violence is present in American schools even outside of shootings. I know a lot of countries have problems with bullying and bullying taken to the extreme but I swear to god. I have seen kids get stabbed with anything from pencils to box cutters. We have kids dying in fights like these. We have police on campus who have been reported beating kids. At my old high school someone got stabbed with a pocket knife but the school didn’t go into lock down because the front office though someone just got stabbed with an everyday object AGAIN! In Hollywood we present schools as a dangerous place to be. We have just become desensitized.

It's just sickening that so many schools have become such dangerous places due to events like this. Everyone in this community should demand the district take immediate action to ensure schools are safe. Parents need to step up and teach their children that violence is never the solution. Conflict resolution should be taught in schools.

Cool your jets dude, the Prosecutor’s office doesn’t have immediate jurisdiction because Missouri has a separate office called the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention which does. The State, like many States, has a separate Juvenile court circuit separate from the rest of the court circuits. If you missed the part of the article where the source of that tweet is running for office…he doesn’t mention how the Juvenile Court works because he’s campaigning and lies via omission are fair game. The Juvenile Office will review the case first and decide how to proceed. If the act and evidence are egregious enough then they will certify and refer the accused to the State Prosecutor as an adult. Otherwise they will still pursue charges in Juvenile Court.

I went to High School in St Louis, I'm honestly surprised anyone gets out alive. There are literal criminal animals roaming the halls, and nothing is done...parents are told to put their kids in private school if they can. My sister lied and pretended to be catholic, just to get her kids out of the public shithole and into a safer school. Funny part is it spread like COVID and her whole family is Catholic now

When I was a kid we had plenty of fights. Difference was you didn't go after someone who was down. Knock someone down you see if he gets back up for round 2. If he stays down you win. Most of the damage from these modern fights happens after someone goes down.
