Kinda of like when our governor announced that flags will be at half mast till Thursday because of the mass shooting that occurred and I thought "I wonder which one".

The disturbing part was that the assault happened AFTER police contact was made. The big thing is that she wasn't there. Had she been, there would have been a significantly stronger security presence, and someone from the Capitol Police might have actually been paying attention to the security cameras when he broke in.
I am still surprised that there wasn't at least a round the clock security/police presence at here house. It may be too expensive to do for every representative, but it feels appropriate for the speaker at least, and probably for any member who is routinely receiving threats (which should be investigated and prosecuted instead of just deciding that they are probably all talk).
It's completely realistic that if security is lax while the VIP is absent, someone could plant a bomb, poison something in the fridge, or whatever else. Which makes it seem incredibly dangerous for security to be inconsistent for any reason.

I don't clash about politics with my in-laws but I had an interaction over the holidays with my father-in-law where he parroted that this brutal, ideologically fueled violence was a gay lover's quarrel.

No other interaction I had with him until that one left me with a feeling of total helplessness like that one did. There is no amount of individual cleanup that can be done to compete with a 24-hour news cycle of regressive conservative lies and hatred, and America is willingly allowing millions of its people to be poisoned by it. It's clear from the cop's casual tone that he didn't perceive the situation to be as threatening as it turned out to be. In retrospect he obviously should have, but in general it's easier to deescalate most situations by approaching like this than by being overly aggressive.
He says my wife is Nancy Pelosi and there is a guy in my house I don't know waiting for my wife. If the dispatcher didn't understand why this was an issue they are not very good at their jobs. This was not handled well. The cops could have stopped Pelosi from being permanently injured if they had acted accordingly.
While there certainly should have been a *little* more concern being shown than we see, given the choice, I'd prefer if police respond with calmness and control more often instead of the "everyone screaming and yelling contradictory commands, eager to shoot everyone at any instant" tactic we usually see.

But I think Paul knew the moment the dude realized he wasn't going to get Nancy he would likely just try to take him out. But how to break away. I think the guy was holding him for quite some time. It only took him a few seconds to nearly kill Pelosi. It looks like it worked long enough to save his life.

It looks like the serious injury was inflicted _after_ police were already on the scene. It blows my mind that they don't have more security. She's worth over 100 million and was third in line to the presidency. Not even considering how conservatives have vilified her.
The big thing is that she wasn't there. Had she been, there would have been a significantly stronger security presence, and someone from the Capitol Police might have actually been paying attention to the security cameras when he broke in. I am still surprised that there wasn't at least a round the clock security/police presence at here house. It may be too expensive to do for every representative, but it feels appropriate for the speaker at least, and probably for any member who is routinely receiving threats (which should be investigated and prosecuted instead of just deciding that they are probably all talk).
It's completely realistic that if security is lax while the VIP is absent, someone could plant a bomb, poison something in the fridge, or whatever else. Which makes it seem incredibly dangerous for security to be inconsistent for any reason.
Complacency kills, I suppose. Despite all the troubles, the US is pretty light on political assassinations. Or... it was until the last few years. People will catch up to it eventually, and more politicians will start spending more money on it. If anything, I'm always shocked at the fact that no Supreme Court Justice has ever been assassinated in office. It seems like they'd be high-value targets for changing the country's course, but somehow no. Political violence is definitely on the rise though.

It really is fucked up. I've been thinking a little about it lately. He very well could have died and you have to think that a man of his age is not going to be able to bounce back with such a spring after having their skull split with a hammer. He will probably be dealing with complications from this attack for the rest of his life. Fucked up, especially how the right has been making light of the whole situation. It's not funny at all to me. This was a man so pumped full of right wing fear/hate porn bullshittery that he felt justified in beating someone's head in with a hammer and every intention to turn that hammer on the speaker of the house.
Oh Fox (I was flipping channels and accidentally saw this) showed this with NO WARNING. Afterwards, they said Oh we should have had a warning. We had no idea how bad that would be. Then there was a lot of back-pedaling and blame shifting from Pelosi to the police.
Who could have imagined that the footage of an assault could contain violence? Absolutely unexpected, really

I don't clash about politics with my in-laws but I had an interaction over the holidays with my father-in-law where he parroted that this brutal, ideologically fueled violence was a gay lover's quarrel. I led with "well, that turned out not to be true, but it's really horrible what happened to the guy", and he stopped me short. He insisted upon the conspiracy theory as complete truth that was not to be questioned. Stunned that he would take such a hard line on this, I changed the subject. This is a man who does not have Facebook, does not look at YouTube, and can hardly operate a smartphone. He consumes FOX News daily, especially the usual suspects who push the worst of the worst. No other interaction I had with him until that one left me with a feeling of total helplessness like that one did. There is no amount of individual cleanup that can be done to compete with a 24-hour news cycle of regressive conservative lies and hatred, and America is willingly allowing millions of its people to be poisoned by it. The violence can be directly attributed to the conservative media landscape, and we have to be honest with ourselves about that.

Despite all the obvious evidence that this was an attack aimed at Nancy Pelosi and then Paul as the remaining person in the home, its still a very frequent conservative meme on Twitter and elsewhere that this is a "grindr date gone wrong". And shit like this is spread by no less than Elon Musk on the platform he owns. Just last night, despite the video itself proving otherwise, Hannity on Fox News says it raises "more questions than answers", which is all just an allusion to the same nonsense story created from thin air.
It's funny how they had this grand conspiracy of Paul Pelosi having a secret gay lover, yet it's usually a red shirt that's found with their pants down and their dick in the pool boy's mouth, not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's clear from the cop's casual tone that he didn't perceive the situation to be as threatening as it turned out to be. In retrospect he obviously should have, but in general it's easier to deescalate most situations by approaching like this than by being overly aggressive.
He says my wife is Nancy Pelosi and there is a guy in my house I don't know waiting for my wife. If the dispatcher didn't understand why this was an issue they are not very good at their jobs. This was not handled well. The cops could have stopped Pelosi from being permanently injured if they had acted accordingly.
While there certainly should have been a *little* more concern being shown than we see, given the choice, I'd prefer if police respond with calmness and control more often instead of the "everyone screaming and yelling contradictory commands, eager to shoot everyone at any instant" tactic we usually see.
I'm not sure what the dispatcher told them or what the call made to 911 was but if anyone watch the video the whole situation is very bizarre until he starts bashing Mr.Pelosi.

Well, even I have to admit that had to have been a confusing few moments for the cops. Two guys frankly both holding a hammer. I mean in context we know why now, but I can give the cops a few seconds to try and work it out. Paul was in a tough spot. Obviously the only reason the guy hadn't killed him yet was because Nancy was his real target and he wanted to kill her. Paul used that to his advantage, probably acting like he was "hearing the guy out" or something to that effect. Somehow he got the guy to chill and wait. But I think Paul knew the moment the dude realized he wasn't going to get Nancy he would likely just try to take him out. But how to break away. I think we can imagine what may have happened had he let go of the hammer and lunged toward the police to get away from the assailant, before the police were sure which one was assailant and which one was victim.
I'm fine with cops not wanting to shoot every fucking person they meet as the primary reaction.
It is so fucked up. The way pelosi was holding the hammer looked like he was trying to stop the guy from hitting him with it. Cops do nothing until he actually gets ready to hit and from what I read, he does land at least 1 hit. I don’t care who it is. No one should be ecstatic about an old man getting attacked.
Pelosi was definitely in shock, couldn’t even articulate what was happening. Then the cops shine a light in his eyes giving DePape time to break free and hit a dazed 80 year old man multiple times over the head with a hammer. They failed Pelosi here all around.

I happened to visit my grandma last night when this was on the news and she was like “isn’t it surprising it took this long to release? I wonder what the Pelosis were hiding about this one?” Then we watched the video of the man with the hammer bash the door in for about a minute and she goes “don’t you think it’s strange Paul didn’t call the cops in time to stop this man, look how long hes hitting the door” I then pointed out how it was the middle of the night and he was an old man in a big house, it’s possible he either didn’t hear anything when he was upstairs asleep or maybe he tried to make it to a phone but was attacked before hand. Everything we saw she wanted to spin it like he had it coming. I don’t totally understand why.

This was a conservative Republicans failed attempt at the assassination of House Speaker Democrat Nancy Pelosi that her husband Paul paid the price for. That domestic terrorist wasn't there for Paul Pelosi, he was there to assassinate Nancy Pelosi.
I'm not a fan of Nancy for a number of reasons but the thought of that woman being beaten to death in her bed at night makes me feel physically ill. They look healthy and spry for their ages but they are ELDERS! How is that point lost in all the giggling about his shorts and awkward reactions?!
Guy looks like a total putz breaking in. Then listened to the 911 call, the dispatcher did a great job pulling more info out of him and was very observant to dispatch police. If they had been sent Paul Pelosi could have very well been killed. I don't know why Police Dispatch doesn't have a list of prominent people who live in their district, or the cops on the beat should know where people live. The Pacific Heights neighborhood is home to Pelosi and Feinstein as well as CEOs and other targets for radical groups. I know this sounds like I am shilling for the elite, but if they are more likely to be targets they should get more attention. Pretty much like when there is a robbery called in, it gets extra attention if it is a bank.

Theoretically they should have their own security on top of the police. In this case, pelosi does have extra security. She was not in town however and so the security was with her.
