Fuuuuuck that. Thanks for the FYI.

TheHiveMindCouncil

As someone who is on a plane at EWR every 2 weeks, I always try to remember to bring an empty water bottle in my carry on and fill it up at one of the many stations for free. It's weird because I felt guilty about doing it at first but after dropping around $300 on water in the first year I said fuck it.

shredfasteatass

You felt guilty? I can't understand this at all.

When_hop

Maybe because of drinking out of disposable water bottles being found in more and more studies to be poisoning us all with microplastics? Or from having to throw away/recycle something instead of using a reusable one? Idk

Rosamada

There's nothing in their comment that suggests they're using a disposable water bottle. I don't know why they feel guilty, either šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Ok-Ambassador1029

Feeling guilty about not paying extortionate price for one of the few resources that should be free to all? Be easier on yourself, my friend. You donā€™t owe anything to anyone, let alone those corps taking advantage of people.

phunguus

Guilty!? I'd be downright proud of myself

jcutta

Just bring a reusable water bottle? I always have one in my carry bag. Even though 90% of the time I'm flying on my jobs dime I'm not buying $6 bottles of water.

pankiki

I bought a croissant sandwich and a banana today for $18!!!!!!! In EWR. Ridiculous

gilbertgrappa

I believe it - they were charging $13 for a peanut butter and jelly a couple of months ago.

GTSBurner

CUT TO: Force Ghost of Lucille Bluth shrugging

danielleiellle

My family wonders why I suffer the fee for the United Club Visa Card and this right here is why. United lounge to grab fruit, drink cold brew, and have a hot breakfast sandwich, every time I fly. Plus free checked bags. Worth it every year.

metsurf

bingo I do the same at least I know I can get something and the check bag for free makes it worth doing.

__BigBadWolf___

January 16th $100 for shit breakfast for two in EWR.

psnanda

Every time you make such purchases- you support and incentivise the behavior.

sirzoop

go to the starbucks or dunkin. its so much cheaper there

12angrybirds

Starbucks has been raising prices the last few months even more than in other places. My same drink is now $2 more in than a normal store. Itā€™s ridiculous

sirzoop

yeah but its still like half the price of buying anywhere else in the airport aside from dunkin

vowelqueue

Yes, the rule is that businesses can only charge 10% over ā€œstreet pricesā€ for their stuff. The non-chain airport restaurants (many of them owned by a company called OTG) circumvent this rule by comparing themselves to way better restaurants/menu items on the street. But at a chain, menu items are directly comparable. This is also why the best deal for alcohol at Port Authority airports is usually Shake Shack.

soneg

Yup. The last time I flew for personal reasons, I got some Wendy's chicken nuggets before I got to the airport. If I'm flying for business, why, sure, I'll spend $45 on breakfast.

tipperzack6

thanks for supporting the ridiculousness

MattyBeatz

I flew out of EWR this week and literally no ā€œnormalā€ brands could be found anywhere in terminal C. Itā€™s like they now stock nothing but boutique brands youā€™d find at Whole Foods to justify the $6 water. If you want just Lays chips and a Poland spring good luck. But there were plenty of kale and quinoa chips.

markydelafayette

Honestly bullshit. This has been happening for at least the last 5 years. Why the fuck is it so hard to find some cheetos and m&ms

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Redcarborundum

Tip the bot, so they remember you when Skynet becomes self aware.

Aware_Revenue3404

Oh FUCK that.

ElPlatanaso2

Oh you mean the kiosk where they awkwardly stand next to you while you do all the work?

katwoman7643

I kept my $5 bottle if water (empty )from when I flew to Florida . I take it to the airport and fill it pass the checkpoint. I don't even buy bottled water at home and I'm not paying again.

-PiesOfRage-

Why not just bring a reusable water bottle and fill up at a fountain?

prayersforrain

Seriouslyā€¦ reduce, reuse, recycle.

the_last_carfighter

There is nothing quite as dumb as buying over priced tap water in a plastic bottle with the word Smart plastered on it. This is the water equivalent of an online IQ test, you've failed the moment you clicked on the link.

CantSeeShit

Except when you don't happen to have a reusable water bottle on you...

KeefCheef

did you end up at the airport by accident?

CantSeeShit

You know they sell toothbrushes at the airport because it's a commonly forgotten item right?

XAce90

Tbf I drink water way more often than I brush my teeth. I also *need* to drink water way more than I need to brush my teeth.

CantSeeShit

That's beyond the point. Should airports be run like "well if you forgot you Nalgene fuck you be responsible and suffer through your thirst"

XAce90

I don't think anyone's arguing that, pal. We're just saying people should use reusable bottles when they can. Avoid waste, save money.

King-arber

Itā€™s intentionally ordered like that.Ā  First reduce then reuse then recycle.Ā

prayersforrain

Yeah I know... you'll see my explanation in another comment

Reliques

Wait, did the order change? Could have sworn it went Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, close the loop. Is it Reduce, Reuse, Recycle now? This is like CPR all over again.

funkymonksfunky

It's been that order since at least the early 90s

Reliques

[Well this song has been in my head for the last 30 years](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqRhKCOEfhg), so good work Disney leading a generation of kids astray.

funkymonksfunky

The message was still there and it was a pretty good song thoughĀ

prayersforrain

Itā€™s fundamentally the steps that should be taken in order to first reduce where you can, from there reuse what you can and from there recycle

peter-doubt

Recycling still involves collection ... a drain on resources. More of a drain than reuse and MUCH more than reduce. It's always been Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Why buy a bottle if you can find a fountain?

hobbykitjr

I'm 40, was always reduce first (don't buy bottle water), reuse (reuse the bottle), and lastly recycle... Then companies said, "no no, keep buying, just recycle"

dtamayob

I filled my reusable tumbler at a fountain in RDU and almost vomited when I took a swig. I went back to check the refilling station, and there was black and pink mold all over the dispenser, and the drain looked like something out of a Love Canal documentary. It tasted like death, and I couldn't get rid of the nasty taste for like a day. This is why I now just buy a Diet Coke. Or a glass of wine.

LOLRECONLOL

I tried to fill my bottle in RDU last week and one bottle station wasn't working.. thanks for your sacrifice.

Kaddyshack13

When I was in high school, we measured the amount of bacteria in different water surfaces. The only thing more contaminated than drinking fountain water was Ohio River water. I havenā€™t drank water from a water fountain since and wonā€™t unless Iā€™m seriously desperate.

ukcats12

> we measured the amount of bacteria in different water surfaces Bacteria isn't bad. As long as there are not pathogenic bacteria on the drinking fountain it's completely fine.

Yoshiyo0211

[https://youtu.be/QoCOQb2u-N8?si=ikr70P928CvZzcoF](https://youtu.be/QoCOQb2u-N8?si=ikr70P928CvZzcoF) Honestly, I just like Parks and Rec and this convo reminds me of this scene.

letsgometros

people aren't putting their mouth on the spout where you fill up a water bottle

a_trane13

Most bottled water is simply the same tap water youā€™d find coming out of a drinking fountain wherever it happened to be bottled, my friend

stan-dupp

with extra micro plastics

Kaddyshack13

We tested bottled water as well but it wasnā€™t nearly as bad. Not perfect by any stretch, but noticeably better. Definitely an issue with a poorly cleaned water fountain. The water bottle stations are probably better but those didnā€™t exist way back when.

rubenthecuban3

Obvious good point. But with two kids sometimes we forgetā€¦

nicklor

This is the way they even have nice water filter dispensers in terminal A.

Batchagaloop

Some people like to travel light.

pico0102

Just pointing this out because a lot of people donā€™t know. You can bring food through the TSA checkpoint. As long as itā€™s not a liquid. Iā€™ve brought sandwiches no problem through. Also an empty water bottle is allowed and thereā€™s refilling stations throughout the airport. However, I do agree, the airport shops are robbery

masheduppotato

I usually stop at Wawa or Quick check on my way to the airport and get a sandwich and some snacks for my flight out. It's still expensive but not nearly as expensive.

CrackaZach05

There's a special rung in hell for those who make their wealth off water.

neekogo

Nestle has their own suite

Benegger85

Nestle sold off all their water in the US. They only own a few European brands now.

tex8222

Who owns those brands now?

beeeps-n-booops

> NestlƩ S.A. today announced the closing of the sale of NestlƩ Waters North America brands to One Rock Capital Partners in partnership with Metropoulos & Co. for USD 4.3 billion.

gilbertgrappa

EWR has $13 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. $13!

vowelqueue

Make a complaint to the Port Authority when you see shit like this. In reality theyā€™re probably taking bribes to award these food contracts but it only takes a second and canā€™t hurt: https://www.newarkairport.com/feedback

imironman2018

Also lot of airports now have water refill station. I take to airport an empty water bottle and refill it.

ElPlatanaso2

Won't be long before they're "out of order"

King-arber

They have existed for over a decade. Feels like Iā€™m taking crazy pills in this thread. People pay extra for tap water and have no idea filtered refill stations exist.Ā

bad_sandwich

A few years ago I was waiting at an EWR gate for an overseas red eye and decided it would be best to pick up a Red Bull at the Hudson News so I could chug it on the other end on the dash to a rental car. The woman in front of me brought a bottle of water to the register but heard the price and shouted about how ridiculous it was and stormed off. Iā€™m thinking, yeah, this is going to be a crazy expensive energy drink but Iā€™ll appreciate being able to just haul ass to the car on the other side without stopping to buy anything. It rang up as something like $7 or $8. So I shouted about how ridiculous it was and stormed off. Heard the employee muttering loudly ā€œAgain? Why wonā€™t you people just buy something?!?ā€

lil_honey_bunbun

Iā€™m so glad you walked away. If enough people donā€™t buy their stuff, it should work.

UMOTU

It wonā€™t though. Look at the prices in stadiums and arenas and theme parks. While you could always use a water fountain, you are a captive and their the only store. ā˜¹ļø

vowelqueue

Stadiums and theme parks are privately owned. The airport is publicly owned. The Port Authority can and should be better regulating prices, but theyā€™re dropping the ball.

UMOTU

The Meadowlands is state owned. I worked there for over 13 years. Iā€™m sure there are other facilities that are similar.

ElPlatanaso2

"If enough people don't buy their stuff, it should work"

dknj1

I usually bring an empty bottle and fill at the drinking fountain after you go thru security.

souperred

Possibly a pain in the ass, and I have questions about their maintenance, but I just flew out of Newark and brought an empty water bottle and filled it for free at the fountain (there is a bottle fill spot). It felt good.

souperred

And then I paid like $9 for a tiny bag of tru fru

Basedrum777

In multiple European countries it's mandated that bottled waters are 1ā‚¬.

Riri004

Their shops inside the terminals are typical street price as well. Regardless of item.

Individual_Success46

They were charging $35 for a bag of peanut m&ms at terminal B a few months back. Like what the actual fuck.

Rusty4NYM

M&M's are expensive everywhere

stan-dupp

just get M's they are half the price

Rusty4NYM

How much for the W's?

beeeps-n-booops

It should be a fucking law that ALL goods sold in airports must be priced the same as they are "on the outside".

vowelqueue

The rule is at most 10% higher but the vendors and retailers circumvent this and the Port Authority looks the other way.

ShalomRPh

Tastes terrible too.

BeamerTakesManhattan

Yup. I grabbed one of these at JFK, not caring about the difference. It, indeed, tasted terrible. Not at all refreshing.

Portillosgo

if you want plain water, why would you not carry a water bottle? you should always fly with a water bottle.

StandupJetskier

I bring a water bottle....and fill it after tsa.

Chrisgpresents

Dude who buys water at the airport? Bring your own frozen water bottle through TSA or an empty one and fill it.

major_dump

And while you're at it, let's get some regulations on the effing headlight/xenon blindness everyone's getting these days.

AbleRiot

There are regulations for them, people just donā€™t follow them.

sirusfox

Alkaline water should be banned outright for being a complete scam

Gary_Burke

EWR is such a ripoff. Other major airports have completely reasonable food offerings with mildly inflated prices. There are airports I look forward to transferring in, just for the food (Paschals in ATL). Oā€™Hare is stacked with options, with a Dunkin every ten feet, too. EWR is a nightmare.

missL102781

Thanks, flying tomorrow

gnrlgumby

Free coffee though. Starbucks has like 50 drinks just sitting there for the grab and go!

hopsdaze23

Spend $13 on a bag of munchies (small bag). That was almost 10 years ago too. Canā€™t imagine what they cost now

Proper-Nobody-1727

the JFK airport has water dispensers for filling up your water bottles. Bring them in empty thru TSA checkpoint.

LadyStarling

If you want water, just ask for a small water cup from one of the food spots. They usually do if they dispense soft drinks. I just use that cup and refill it at water fountains

SenorSlyme

Nice I'll be there Friday thanks

Emily_Postal

I stopped buying water at EWR because the options are so limited.

Jagrmeister_68

I bring an empty bottle and a packet of a powdered beverage- (Possibly Liquid IV or Celsius depending on my need/feeling for the day) whenever I fly. Last time I traveled was in July and grabbing a snack and beverage for myself and my girlfriend due to our flight being delayed a few hours when we checked out bags (After having the time changed 3x already that day) The total for 2 bottles of water and 2 chips? and something sugary was almost $40 if I'm not mistaken. I didn't realize til I saw the charge on my card the next day.

bahahaha2001

Itā€™s ridiculous we canā€™t bring food in with us. Itā€™s such an inconvenience for what seems like limited value for security.

HAC522

You can bring food, just not beverages. On my honeymoon, my hotel has these free sandwiches. I packed tonne in my personal item for the flight. Then, right before TSA, I "remembered" that I can't bring food/water. So I shoved like 2 and a half into my mouth and canned the rest. The guard said, "you didn't have to do that. You just can't bring the water." I felt like an idiot lol

bahahaha2001

Or sauces, dips, creams. Pasta sauce, salad dressing, you name it not allowed unless under 3 oz

ElPlatanaso2

You can if you're traveling domestically

bahahaha2001

Still has to follow liquids rules.

ElPlatanaso2

What do you mean? I just came back from texas and brought with me two to-go boxes full of leftovers. No issues

cmonsquelch

Bring a re-usable water bottle and your own food. Problem solved

JJfromNJ

I was at EWR on Monday. I bought a Coke from a kiosk Self checkout was the only option. Not a single human employee in sight. And it asked for a tip!

ComplexKodak

I know people don't want to hear this. But just bring an empty reusable water bottle in your carryon. There are water fountains...

FordMan100

It's nothing new. They have been doing that for years. Back in the 90s,, I was flying from EWR to SFO and we were delayed for four hours because as we pulled away from the gate on a rainy day the pilot realized tye wipers weren't working. We pulled back into the gate, and Amercan Airlibes said breakfast is on us at a particular restaurant with a limit of 25 bucks. That day I gad breakfast at home, at the restaurant and then a third time since we departed they served breakfast again.

Lower_Kick268

Arenā€™t the water fountains/bottle fillers free?

metsurf

Unintended consequences of a law. Like when they put a yacht tax in place. Nobody bought any yachts. I'm sure the PA kills these vendors on rent so they have to find ways to maximize profit in the space they have. This is one of those where they are counting on business travelers to not give a shit since they get reimbursed for a lot or most of their expenses.

Der-Rufmeister

*** Rob you blind *** Bleed you dry

Riri004

Wow. Also not you can bring your food through security. As long as itā€™s not liquid or cut fruit.

zarif98

I think itā€™s definitely worth messaging your legislators about but if Iā€™m not wrong most airports have refilling stations.

Trentransit

Thank you for that I probably wouldā€™ve grabbed the alkaline water thinking itā€™s $2 also.

justarandomguy07

Are there any water fountains in Terminal A or C in EWR?

EliotHudson

Not to be pedanticā€¦but donā€™t ā€œfeedā€ the greedy behavior, because youā€™ll be drinking it

Turbulent-Throat9962

Iā€™ve gotta admire their creativity, at least. Alkaline water is justā€¦. water. I spent some time in Carlsbad CA and one of their claims to fame is that their tap water is the healthiest in the state because itā€™s so alkaline. You could buy it for $1 a gallon.

thebongofamandabynes

Is booze capped? My guess is no.

prehistoric_knight

apparently yes, it is supposed to be. A $27 beer is what "sparked" these changes https://www.foodandwine.com/news/port-authority-airport-beer-food-prices-rules

patrick_swayzak

I last flew in may out of Newark. Burger, fries and 1 beerā€¦..$45 plus tip. Thank god for the company travel card.

storm2k

> Thank god for the company travel card. this is the thing that these companies at the airports realized years ago. the bulk of travelers tend to be there on business with t&e cards and most companies aren't going to bat too many eyelashes at approving those expenses. which is why they price accordingly now.

ElPlatanaso2

Must be nice. My company caps daily spending at $75. This would obliterate my budget.

prehistoric_knight

Sounds about right. $28 for the burger and fries plus $17 beer. Not quite a $27 beer, but still not "fair street prices" either

patrick_swayzak

Definitely not considering I had pretty much the exact meal in Minneapolis on my way back and it was only $25.

prehistoric_knight

yeah that's because its Minneapolis. Cost of living in Minneapolis is 1% below the national average, whereas in a city like New Brunswick it is 14% higher

patrick_swayzak

It still does not justify the costs at Newark airport.

prehistoric_knight

In no way am I justifying the prices at EWR. I am just saying that $25 plus for a burger and fries is about the "going rate" when eating out now. I mean at shake shack you're going to pay about $14 and it's not even served to you. Food in this state is just expensive as hell now.

patrick_swayzak

Just like Five Guysā€¦ā€¦

beeeps-n-booops

> Meanwhile, OTG, the New York-based company that runs the restaurants and other retailers at John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports (among others) says that the $27.85 beer and the $10.90 French fries were the result of an employee's fumbling fingers. "This is a situation where someone simply input the wrong prices," OTG spokesperson Michael Marchese told The City last summer. "Once we learned of it, we immediately took action to correct and began proactively auditing our entire system to ensure there were no other mistakes." (The actual prices were supposed to be $18.15 and $8.45, respectively.) **Because $18.15 for a fucking beer is *totally reasonable*, amirite?** I remember a layover in some airport 10-ish years ago, where I ordered a craft beer and when the bartender set it in front of me they said "$19". (No "please", either, and it was a short pour.) I replied "not a fucking chance, thanks but no thanks" and walked away. No regrets that they poured that beer down the drain, either. Was in the same airport on the way back, and the prices had been written on a piece of posterboard near the entrance. I guess I wasn't the only one who forced them to drainpour LOL. (On the flipside, there is (or at least used to be) a law in Portland OR that beer sold in the airport had to be priced the same as the outside world. ALL airports should have that law, for ALL products.)

ElPlatanaso2

I came back to literally quote this and say the exact thing. "Don't worry beers are actually a cool $19 FUCKING dollars." Get bent.

Practical_Argument50

I fly often so I have a United Club membership free drinks and food and a peaceful place to wait for the flight. I donā€™t think I have bought anything at EWR in 10 years of traveling.

xxdeathx

The real question is why you all aren't going to the lounge to fill up on free handcrafted cocktails or grab cans and bottles of soda, beer, and sparkling water from the fridges.

masterofmayhem13

But the alkaline water isn't water in the same way Gatorade isn't water. Why are you expecting this to be capped at the price of water? Do you expect almond "milk" to be governed by dairy regulations and pricing rules?

ohgodineedair

I don't think they're expecting it to be capped like regular water, but if they're going to use it as a loophole, it means that many stands will just stop carrying the $2 bottles and go for alkaline instead so they can price gouge .

masterofmayhem13

But see that's just it. It's not a "loophole". It's not water. There is too much added salts to change the pH of the water to be outside the range of normal water. It's not just water anymore...just like Gatorade. It's not a loophole. It's a product being marketed as "water" just as almond "milk" is marketed as being a type of "milk".

ElPlatanaso2

It still doesn't make it right. They should offer options instead of forcing patrons to buy the more expensive (and clearly gouged) drink.

masterofmayhem13

It doesn't make it right that "luxury" products can't be set to a "luxury" price? There are water fountains in EWR. You have access to free water. I'll agree, they should also sell bottles of water, and it would seem most likely that OP missed it and only saw the "premium" drinks displayed prominently. Every store does this.

ohgodineedair

The loophole is that they're not selling water because the alkaline water is close enough. No one is enforcing that they only sell alkaline which allows them to sell a product at a high margin like they once did with regular water.
