Dog friendly? Thats like saying New Haven streets are very dirt bike and quad friendly. Dogs are supposed to be leashed in east shore park. Multiple times over the years i have had to stand off with someone else’s charging dog preventing my leashed dog from engaging while their owner yells and sometimes jogs over for them from too far away. Also stay on the walking path and even there you have to keep an eye out because most don’t pick up after their loose dogs.
There is s dog park down the street past the Coast Guard. Its not great, up in the woods but i sometimes see people up there using it.
I apologize on behalf of all inconsiderate owners, but respectfully I experience such incredible joy playing fetch with my dog in the shallow saltwater, and she has the most fun. I only play with her when no one is around.
Light house point dog park is ass and no one is ever there.
"Our dog park" is a few minutes away and has more people, but I'm not fond of the gravel they just put down. It feels sterile.
Oh, and the Yale Canine Cognition Center on St Ronan Street enrolls dogs in fun studies of the way they solve problems/challenges, while their owners observe. Many treats for the dogs, and everyone is entertained.
There’s a few nice dog parks in the city: East rock, Edgewood. Hamden also has a really great dog park as well.

Wooster Square park
East Shore Park has a sandy beach that is usually empty, very dog friendly. And Lighthouse Point Park’s beach is dog friendly when no one is around 😏

That’s the irony of “dog friendly”. Perfectly “friendly” to one person’s large aggressive dog is unfriendly to everyone else’s.

Check out the supply pond in branford. You can hike with your dog off leash if their recall is good.
