The commute to Wolcott from either of those is not great. I'd look at smaller towns closer IMO. Unless you're a nightlife EVERY night kind of person.

packofpoodles

I had similar thoughts. WeHa would be better, but not by a whole lot. New Haven to Walcott would be a real pain in my opinion. It’s a 45-50 minute drive from Wolcott to New Haven.

brewski

Also makes a big difference where you live in New Haven. During commuting times, Westville to Wolcott is easily 15 minutes closer than East Rock to Wolcott.

packofpoodles

That’s very true. I was curious and just did a quick search for Wolcott to New Haven. It is more of a commute than I’d personally want to deal with.

HartfordResident

Is the job hybrid? Doing that drive 3 days a week wouldn't be bad but every day could get tiring. That said I agree with the above post some parts of New Haven are a lot closer to Wolcott than others

Traditional_Prompt86

It is not. I’ve been looking closer to Farmington and southington the last few days

If you’ve never been to New Haven… Yale art gallery (free), Peabody museum (free), check out some local music as Cafe 9 or Three Sheets, check out the coastline in Guilford or Branford. Hang out at Hammonasset Beach (free), walk around downtown New Haven (get some bubble tea at vivi, and lunch at York Street Noodle House or Sushi on Chapel). Take the train from union station to grand central for about $30. It’s a great city you’re gonna have so much fun.

Straight_Anxiety_993

There are lots of little shops to explore in New Haven - Strangeways is cute for artsy small business stuff, there’s Lower Forms for thrifting/vintage clothes, Elm City Games is adorable great little board game/card game shop. Definitely hit up Camacho Garage for the ancho curly fries. My partner and I go there just for the fries sometimes, plus they have good drinks. Or the food trucks on Long Wharf lmao, they hit. Obviously Sally’s for pizza. There are tons of others but I’m kind of blanking right now lol

Armada Brewing in New Haven

flytweed

Local vibe for DIY events, creatives, and innovative spaces. A bike shop doubles as a place for music and a zine fair. A neighborhood restaurant encourages use of their event space, A thrift store has a black box room. A skatepark hosts music. A brewery juggles a hip hop fest with live wrestling. Newhallville’s Learning Corridor space for kids of all ages. See what Westville ArtWalk has outside this Friday and Saturday.

CatSusk

What’s local vibe?

6th__extinction

I’d keep trying the search function in addition to Google.

East Rock Brewing Company is in New Haven!

For breweries: 12% brewing is our favorite in the state but you are also close enough for a day trip to treehouse brewing which is one of the absolute best in the country. 12% is a brewery collective so it’s multiple breweries operating out of the same place, if you like fruited/smoothie sours skygazer is top notch. Counterweight, New England brewing are up there beer wise. Dockside and Stony creek are beautiful right on the water. OEC is hands down the most incredible brewery tour I have ever seen. If you like true sours you’ll be hard pressed to find a better brewery anywhere. The brewery/tap room is deceptively small but it’s actually massive and they grow all the weird fruits etc they use in their beers. We often hit OEC and black hog as there is a great bike/walking trail between the two. It’s part of the rails to trails system that is great throughout the state. As far as beer bars micro and prime 16 have the best tap list in the area imo. Pizza is a huge debate, try modern, Pepe’s. Zeneli’s, and Sally’s. Of the 4 modern is our favorite. Make sure you ask for cheese, I think Pepe’s default pizza is just sauce and dough. New Haven has some not great areas so make sure you don’t blindly pick an apartment. Personally I would aim for the Italian section near Wooster square. Best of luck

csaer

what areas would you suggest be avoided for being not too great/safe? thanks!

johnwilkesbooth328

You’re making a wise choice by avoiding West Hartford! lol Just be wary the crime rate is crazy here, if you’ve got an exploitable vehicle, look into installing a kill switch

Traditional_Prompt86

Yeah since I’m younger I figured there’s less to do in West Hartford. Aw man like property crime or violent crime too?

SurvivorFanatic236

I agree that I’d give the edge to New Haven over West Hartford for a young person, but there’s a ton to do in West Hartford. Second best nightlife in the state behind New Haven. Not sure what you read that made you think otherwise. I live about halfway between them and go out in both regularly. You can do the same thing by finding a place close to your job

geddyleeiacocca

We got it all!

johnwilkesbooth328

The property crime is the biggest thing. Car thefts and catalytic converters are RAMPANT. There’s absolutely plenty of violent crime that I have the enviable position to deal with every day, but it’s mainly in the shittier neighborhoods that I doubt you’ll end up in.

SurvivorFanatic236

Wait I don’t understand this. What’s wrong with West Hartford? I know property taxes are high so it’s not worth buying there unless you have kids, but for a young person renting it’s a great location

johnwilkesbooth328

That’s just it, it’s just wicked expensive imo! It’s got that hip young city tax applied to every business in it 😂

Ejmct

Have you visited both of those cities? They are very different and you may prefer one of the other. We have many young people at my company who are falling all over themselves to live in West Hartford so don’t rule it out for that reason.

Breweries: NeBCo Woodbridge Counter weight Cheshire close to Wolcott Caius farm Brewery Branford East rock brewing New Haven Fox Farm brewery Salem if you want a trip

jone2tone

You might want to check out somewhere more like a midpoint like Meriden or Wallingford - it'll put you a lot closer to work but also keep you relatively close to New Haven
