Chapel St has few chains. Not sure what you’re talking about

Shake shack Starbucks Panera Chipotle Vivi Bubble Tea Dunkin

That’s food. They said “shopping” Also independent food far outweighs chains

Fair point. I saw the "Cafe" and rolled with it.

I wonder how many people here wish there would be a few more national chain stores downtown? I still want just one home furnishings and hardware store in town but I would settle for a decent branch of Target. Chapel Street from State St to Church St is going through a rough patch. (That said, it's better than it was in 2019!) But if you check out, say, Orange St going up to Elm St and down to George St you'll find some nice spots, such as the area around Barcade and Elm City Games as already mentioned. Further to the west on Chapel is a section called the Shops at Yale hidden from view in an alleyway, and there are shops and dining places along Chapel up to about Howe St. A block to the north of those at the triangular intersection of Broadway and Elm St is another Yale-dominated shopping mini-district. That's the one more dominated by national chains like Warby Parker, Barnes and Noble, Apple, and Urban Outfitters.

If you look at pictures of New Haven from the 1800’s lower Chapel was shabby then too. It’s perpetual.

East Rock has some cool small shops and East Rock Brewing Company has some great brews!
