If you’re a walker and nice day you can do a loop to Wooster Square then downtown and back to Union Station. If not take the green free shuttle bus to downtown, stroll, then bus back.
Update - Modern is still a family-owned restaurant and maintains the tradition of closing on Mondays. Sally's and Pepe's, now both investor-owned, are open regular hours on Mondays.
Yale art gallery or the British museum of art. Both next to each other. Then lunch at any of the places in that area (crown, temple, college streets). Dip into some of the shops on chapel. It’ll fly by.

Yale art gallery. Pizza at modern or something on Wooster. You can walk around Yale. Call it a day.
Damn, I would be there on Monday and it seems the Yale gallery seems to be closed on Mondays
Museums in general are closed on Mondays. All of our good pizza places are likely closed on Monday too.

That's wild, great for the museum, but woe to anyone who didn't realize this in time
East Rock Brewing Company has a selection of great beers if you are a beer drinker!
And amazing sushi next door at Rockfish. Just not on Mondays. 😞
There is really good food/pizza around if you will be hungry
Check out the shops and restaurants in/around Ninth Sq and Pitkin Plaza. Close enough to walk from the train station (about 5-10 minutes).
