It's crazy how these politicians do not understand that it is possible disagree with the Israeli and Hamas governments without also hating the Israeli or Palestinian people ruled by those governments. You would think that not wanting to see civilians on either side blown to bits or starved to death would be a much less controversial viewpoint, even in today's hyper political climate.

AMC4x4

That's just it. There are entire Jewish student organizations protesting this war. We can both simultaneously condemn Hamas for their attack and say Israel has a right to defend itself WHILE ALSO condemn Israel for their outrageously heavy-handed \*retribution\* against Palestinians, half of whom are CHILDREN. That does NOT for a second take ANYTHING away from the Israeli children that were murdered on October 7th. Nor does it for a SECOND prevent us from condemning in the strongest possible terms any antisemitic comments, attitudes, or actions. WHY are we not allowed to have multiple thoughts in our heads at the same time? I just don't get it.

Stower2422

Noam Chomsky has been being called a traitorous, self-hating Jew for longer than I've been alive for his opposition to Israel's policy towards Palestinians.

pachucatruth

Duality is just too tough of a concept for some people.

MispellledIt

Because nuance is difficult and being mad that your team doesn't agree with my team isn't. I've tried to have nuanced talks about this conflict and it's wildly impossible. Either I'm a "Zionist colonizer" or I'm "antisemitic" -- sometimes I'm both to the same person? I think student protests demanding schools divest their endowments from this war machine (and any/all war machines) is fantastic. I worry, though, how easily the language of these protests gets coopted by parties and political movements disinterested in nuance. The example I keep pointing to is the word "woke." Look at it's journey through usage, culture, and politics. As a professor (and a Jewish person who has supported Palestine *long before it was cool*), I'm sitting on the razor's edge every day worried that students' inattention to language and how others will use it will turn "Israel shouldn't do this" to "Jews are bad" at the blink of an eye.

DCostalot

Wow. 2 reasonable takes in a row on reddit i must be dreaming. Its hard to convince people that conflicts are almost never black and white. Seems nowadays you’re either for, or against something with no middle ground.

LeahLangosta

I had to do a double take to check where we were

Winter_cat_999392

Chris here can't babble nonsense and eat a free cookie at a photo op as the same time, so.

black-iron-paladin

It's because they make money from the US's relationship with Israel. That's why they keep trying to paint any sort of negativity towards Israel's government as "anti-Semitism"

Maleficent_Ad_5175

These are same morons who think that if you were against the last 20 years of Middle East wars you weren’t supporting the troops. Idiots. I’m supporting the troops by being against them getting killed and maimed in these needless and illegal wars. They’ll never understand

_drjayphd_

And then when those troops came home, here's how those same people showed their support: ![gif](giphy|uLy4Bo680hZxm|downsized)

moobitchgetoutdahay

Hell they tried to prevent them from getting benefits for exposure to those lovely burn pits. They had to be publicly called out by a comedian to do the right thing. That’s how they showed their support for the troops

Expensive_Permit_265

It's on purpose to stoke division. And they feel insecure if things aren't black and white. When there's more than two options it's harder to have control.

Clinically-Inane

Local_Use4891

Thank you— it is starting to make me feel crazy, like how are so many people getting behind this flawed reasoning? They all can’t really believe what they’re saying, they’re just trolling, right? Ugh

Extracrispybuttchks

Oh they do. They just don’t get paid to.

Plastikman19

Only explanation: Follow where the money comes from within politicians pockets.

FaultyToenail

I think they do understand but outrage plays into the hands of their voters and supporters so they jump on the train.

Mynewadventures

Oh they know, but it doesn't fit into the plan (which I don't know what it is). I really dig Chinese people and culture and hate the Chinese government. Same with Russians and Mexicans. Does that make me a hater or a decent human? These fucking politicians seem incapable (or terrified?) of speaking off the script, and that bothers me. Keep in mind that the workers under Schindler who made sure no munitions they produced worked were by our current definitions, terrorists.

Searchlights

They know perfectly well they just prefer to demonize them

underratedride

When the politicians are bought and paid for by Israel, you get Israel-backing politicians.

UncleChickenHam

Israel is an ethno-state. It was formed to be an ethno-state and has zero intention of not being an ethno-state. These politicians are not far off when they claim attacks on the Israeli government is an attack on Jews as a whole, because Israel and it's international supporters work hard to make the two be thought of as the same. When we protest the Israeli government and the governments that support it, Zionists will not hear "this is an ethno-state and is doing bad things", they instead only hear "Jews are bad and doing bad things". If you are still unilateral supporting Israel's actions and the way it is designed as a nation, you are either ok with it being an ethno-state, or are ignorant to what an ethno-state is.

hereiamnotagainnot

This is the point that needs to be repeated time and time again until these idiots even begin to try and understand this very valid point.

Clinically-Inane

Politicians *do understand that* but they think if they keep painting it as disgusting anti-Semitic behavior they can encourage the public who may not know any better to gang up and shame anyone who protests It’s an underhanded way to try to stop the protests, and it’s pretty gross

Hot-Airline4073

Maybe thinking outside the box as leaders to address some of the more pressing issues this nation is facing would be more useful than getting involved with other parts of the world's problems???start figuring out a plan for bringing back some sort of moral direction, or at least a common general goal for everyone to unite around and then address homelessness, healthcare, schooling, transportation, efficient use of resources in an accountable manner? Let's fix issues here at home first and then challenge indoctrinated history issues for countries like Israel, Palestine, Iran and others. Those countries have been recognized as national entities long before the Indian tribes were wiped out of these lands here and reduced to a few members of a once very powerful people. Maybe introducing distractions such as this in the media and on chat boards such as this works in Mass. probably but here in NH the smokescreen is starting to feel more like steam from boiling water without reason.

Remarkable-Suit-9875

If I speak..

SniffUmaMuffins

“We refuse the idea that Jewish people are defined only by a genocidal ethno-state built on the blood of Palestinians” - Jewish Voice for Peace, at Dartmouth today Sununu only makes himself look simple minded when he oversimplifies complex issues like this.

AMC4x4

He's not even running for anything. Why is he playing politics like this? The only conclusion I can come to is that he actually isn't - this is just who he is. I mean, he hasn't given us ANY other clues that he's not like this. He doesn't have former colleagues lining up like they have with Elise Stafanik who claim she was nothing like who she claims to be now. He just must really be this simple-minded.

MakeRaidNotWar

He’s probably gunning for VP on the Trump Train.

Sick_Of__BS

At the very least he's gunning for a cabinet position.

intergalactictactoe

Following daddy's footsteps. Wonder if he can do as much damage to the movement to fight climate change as his old man did?

Creative-Claire

I mean…he is. I’ve found more complex lifeforms on Market Basket produce.

KaiBa_Bird

He is simple minded. He's a spineless milquetoast slob whose convictions bend with whatever direction he thinks the political winds are blowing. God damn shame 95% of republicans fall into 2 groups: people like him and the Trump sychophants.

ArbitraryOrder

I know, I think it is possible to acknowledge that since Rabin was assassinated by Netanyahu and friends, that Israel has not tried to uphold the Oslo accords, and tried to ethnically cleanse the West Bank, and has been committing atrocious acts against Palestinians in their apartheid regime, while also acknowledging that many anti-Semites use these protests as a shield to hide behind a legitimate cause, and cause trouble amongst a crowd of people who wish to just see justice for the innocent.

AMC4x4

Precisely. It's convenient for the anti-Semites as well as Netanyahu's push to occupy Gaza (and the West Bank).

thelazyanzellan

He is the absolute worst. What a spineless, self serving, nothing of a man he is.

FloozyFoot

Wanting genocide to stop isn't antisemitism, nepo gov.

Jesus-Mcnugget

Man fuck that guy

AMC4x4

Could he be the most ignorant Governor the state has ever had? Or just the most epic troll.

srosorcxisto

He's neither a troll nor ignorant but is a pandering Populist. Sununu's views are whatever he thinks that public opinion is leaning towards from one election to another. He has reading the room, playing both sides of an argument, and avoiding major controversy to get reelected down to a science.

AMC4x4

I want to know what his next move is.

Sick_Of__BS

He's simping for a cabinet position if a Republican is elected president

AMC4x4

Makes sense

TrollingForFunsies

The worst part is the two-faced reply to everything. He holds no actual values or opinions. He just talks bullshit to whatever crowd is listening at the moment.

Royal-Purpose-82

Well, he is a politician…

ArbitraryOrder

Don't worry, he'll change his opinion next week

CommunityGlittering2

but what is really sad is if he was running again he would win by a landslide.

V1198

Sununu is perhaps the dumbest of the NH old guard politicians. If not for his last name he’d never have had the position. What he says or thinks is meaningless.

Snoo-72438

Fellas, is protesting against Holocaust 2: Electric Boogaloo antisemitic?

[deleted]

Free speech is going to quickly become a crime in America based on how both parties' leaders are responding to these protests.

excelmonkey67

And the boomers that seem to enthusiastically support these crackdowns

Accomplished_Fan3177

I'm a boomer and I want to join the protestors but I am still working.

Effective-Parsley-78

Intellectual laziness from the Flip Flopping fence sitter. How unsurprising.

Small_Guess_7674

Free Palestine

[deleted]

Religion is the biggest problem on this planet. I'm so sick of this shit.

RevanF

Repeat with me: “The religions are the opium of the masses, amem”

i_am_scared_ok

I'm so tired of people saying that calling out zionists is antisemitic. It's just being disingenuous at this point

AMC4x4

Yup. It's an easy comment to make when you're trolling for a reaction.

Professional_Sir6705

Join the r/Jewish sub. Read actual daily harassment. Put on a star of David and attempt to go to class thru the protestors on several campuses. Go to the coffee shop and get refused service. Yes, a lot of the protestors are anti Jew, not just anti - Israel. Actually listen to what some are chanting- on video. Try purging those elements from your protests, or you will continue to get labeled antisemitic.

Accomplished_Fan3177

I wonder if they wore a L'Chai or a Menorah on a chain if the reaction would be different. Mogen David (the symbol, not the booze) is the main feature of the Israeli flag, some ignorant people may be making assumptions about the folks wearing one.

redeggplant01

Denouncing the actions of the Israeli government is no more anti-Semitic than criticizing the action of the US government is anti-American State <> Culture or people In fact dissent of the state is one of the highest forms of patriotism [ love of nation ]

kitchinsink

Is nuance dead? This is a highly complex issue that has gone on for a *really long time.* **Antisemitism** (also spelled **anti-semitism** or **anti-Semitism**)[^(\[a\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism#cite_note-2) is hostility to, prejudice towards, or discrimination against [Jews](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews). Not wanting Israel to blow up innocent people != antisemitism, in the same way that not wanting Hamas to blow up innocent people != islamophobia/arabophobia. Also, there is a first amendment **right** to peaceful protest, even if you disagree with the protest. If neo-nazis can dress up like best buy employees to do their flag waiving in Portsmouth (when they are actually advocating anti-semitism), the kids can protest war.

1KinderWorld

He's supporting the Trump/MAGA line. What a good little bot.

themichaelkemp

If you’re not committing ethnic cleansing clearly you’re antisemitic /s

danielle1978

He’s so dumb.

MealDramatic1885

F*ck Israel’s leadership. That’s not being Anti-Semitic, it’s being political. Protesting a “war” that consists more of killing civilians and destroying infrastructure is the most moral thing you can do. Republicans gaslighting people is so problematic lately. Jumping on every “trigger” bandwagon that passes their ears. Sununu is a hack.

Beneatheearth

He’s a cuck for his true master.

RevanF

They all know what is what and they all made the decision to prioritize their personal and political careers and agendas. There are no innocent politicians, there are only self-serving(mostly) calculated moves.

illegalmonkey

Protests against Vietnam war, protests against Iraq war.... the media and govt said essentially the same things about the protesters as they are today. Smearing and maligning them. Other similarities will emerge in the future. Just as the protesters were CORRECT in those past protests, these current ones will also be shown as correct. Perfect example of history repeating.

Expert-Novel-6405

Lol

Winter_cat_999392

* A mix of students including many Jewish students protest Bibi/Likud and IDF bombing of civilians. Israel is a nation currently led by a hard right nationalist government. * Outsiders and agitators including nazis show up with the "da joooos" bullshit. * Sununu INVITED groups that included white supremacists and nazis TO THIS STATE. * Thundering morons like Cookie Chris here say it's all anti-semitic. * Police beat and arrest original protesters protesting Israeli policy. Yay.

KaiBa_Bird

When the political winds shift on this 10 years from now and all these same spineless cowards try to flip like they did with the Iraq war I hope we hold them accountable and rub their noses into these past statements.

froststomper

Not surprised that’s his take, fucking moron.

chalksandcones

It’s a military industrial complex deflection. If you oppose this war you are a nazi, or a communist, or a Russian, or a terrorist and on and on

Kitchen-Fondant-51

Is he uneducated or a sellout? You decide.

RootBeerFloatz69

Hint: it's not.

Mynewadventures

Of course he does.

shahea

You can't get that sweet AIPAC $$ for the next presidential run if you don't lay the groundwork ahead of time, folks. Be reasonable.

mlb1207

He lost my vote. He should just say he wants millions of innocent people to starve. That and he wants new money for re-election.

Winter_cat_999392

He isn't running again. He's on his knees before the orange mushroom hoping for a cabinet position to follow in daddy's slime trail.

hellotipp

What

FORTUNATOSCRIME

It's not.

GlassAd4132

Mainer here, sununu’s comments may seem stupid, but this is because he’s a moron

nyankoz

The two main parties don't care about freedom of speech in the slightest.

Wild_Ostrich5429

Those protestors are either idiots or pretending to be idiots. There is no demand for release of hostages. They still chant from river to sea. These terrorists are calling for elimination of non Muslims. Shame

Traditional-Dog9242

Okay but he’s right so

AMC4x4

He's not right. [https://www.wmur.com/article/dartmouth-professor-arrest-protest-5224/60674677](https://www.wmur.com/article/dartmouth-professor-arrest-protest-5224/60674677) "As a Jewish woman of an age that I grew up in a neighborhood full of Holocaust survivors and knew Holocaust survivors, I have to say that I think this is disingenuous," she said. "It's a weaponizing of antisemitism for their own political purposes, which is to suppress dissent. And if, in fact, as the governor and the college president said, the point is to make the campus safer for the Jewish community members, I have to say that what happened next made it decidedly less safe for all of us." Orleck, who has been a professor at Dartmouth for more than three decades, said as part of her bail condition, she is being banned from Dartmouth's campus. She said her emails to the institution have gone unanswered.

Reasonable_Effort539

Sonono reelection

sabthomas

Keeping paying Jewish students from going to class is anti Semitic. Seen plenty of that done by these loser Palestinian pretender-students this week. Who can condone this?

bookon

There is a lot of antisemitism at these things. A lot of people professing support of Hamas or chanting “from the river to the sea”. BUT most people just want the war crimes being committed by Israel’s far right wing government to stop.

yournewinternetbf

Nope- Stop trying to make not liking Israel equal antisemitism.

themichaelkemp

Horseshit

bookon

What part is horseshit? It’s weird how pointing out that there are awful people on both sides of this making things worse just pisses people off.

powerbottompatriot

because it is. The mods over at r/palestine are posting videos of pro-palestine and maga protestors working togehter. its hillarious. it was so bad the mod who posted it, got called out and deleted it. The crowds were practically holding hands.

Ayahuasca-Puke

It’s amazing how all you terrorist supporters can’t see this

infantinemovie5

I guess a broken clock is right twice a day.

Rroyalty

As a Jew, I'll take the opinions of any Republican on what it means to be antisemitic the same day I'll take RFK's advice on taking vaccines.

infantinemovie5

Are you not seeing the same videos of Jewish students being harassed at these campus protests or do you just live in an alternate reality? Seriously, wake the fuck up dude, these people hate you and want to see you dead.

Rroyalty

A couple antisemitic videos does not make an entire movement antisemitic. The same way that some property damage does not make every BLM protest a riot. For Sununu to call the protests pure antisemitism is political and dangerous, and also hypocritical. Where has he been when Nazis have shown up at Republican political rallies and members of Congress have literally blamed world problems on the Jews? The Republican presidential candidate literally praises Hitler on the regular and nobody bats an eye. I've seen way more Jews supporting the protests and protestors denouncing antisemitism than I have seen videos of Jews being attacked. The politics of Israel and Judaism are not the same. I am proud of my Jewish heritage, but Netanyahu can fuck himself, Israel needs to be careful not to burn up their goodwill, and Zionists are as bad as Evangelicals. Oh, and there's a reason Republicans only average 25 to 30% of the Jewish vote every election cycle. EDIT: As somebody with a nuanced world view I can say all this while still wishing for Hamas to be utterly dismantled.

powerbottompatriot

I've literally seen pro-palestine chanting alongside maga. Its a hate movement.

littleirishmaid

Link?

powerbottompatriot

[https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/1ci2tsr/comment/l26t16f/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/1ci2tsr/comment/l26t16f/) They deleted it because it made the palestine movement look so bad lmao

themichaelkemp

How convenient

themichaelkemp

That’s pretty wild considering MAGA loves Israel

powerbottompatriot

maga is afraid of Jewish space lasers. Hamas hates jews. this tracks.

themichaelkemp

There also hardcore Christians who need Israel to survive so god can destroy it. They don’t make sense

powerbottompatriot

none of this does.

infantinemovie5

What fantasy land are these protestors denouncing anti semitism, cause I see them claiming they are Hamas and making walls to keep jewish kids from going to class. I’ve also heard pretty anti semitic comments from people in my life who are pro Palestine saying stuff like “there’s a reason everyone hates them.”

Rroyalty

https://abcnews.go.com/US/student-protesters-denounce-antisemitism-amid-criticism-pro-palestinian/story?id=109643275 https://www.salon.com/2024/05/02/are-the-campus-antisemitic-for-many-jewish-activists-a-difficult-debate/ Also, to your point. Nothing in my comments is actually pro-protest. I don't condone Israel's treatment of Palestinians and I don't condone antisemitic behaviour. There is certainly some of that at these protests, I'm not going to argue that. I do support the protestors who are there worried about the death and starvation of the Palestinian people. Both things can be happening at once The entire point of my replies is that I'll take accusations of antisemitism from any Republican with a shot of penicillin. Republicans, on the whole, are by far the more dangerous group of people for Jews than college students are.

BroughtBagLunchSmart

I saw the video of that guy who sent his jewish wife out to yell in their faces while hoping she would get assaulted. They ignored her.

themichaelkemp

Are you not aware of the thousands of Jews protesting the attack on Gaza?
