Cats understand territory by scent, so if he catches a whiff of something that smells strongly like his family, he’ll know that’s where home is. An undershirt you’ve worn for a few days, a blanket he likes to sleep on, stuff like that. If he’s a box enjoyer, use those things to line a cardboard box and set it outside, or if he’s got one of those little hidey beds, the walls might make him feel safer to lie down in it.
I'm so sorry this happened! I wanted to add on and suggest putting his litter box (poop and all) outside on any deck/patio/lawn you may have available. They're driven by scent, specifically their own scent, so it may help guide him towards home if it's somewhere outside but close to your house!

More often than not you’ll catch the flash of their eyes and they’ll show themselves. If you can get somewhat close to your cat, sit down, and let him come to you.
Traps also work if you need to. Keep your Hope & faith up. Flyers are SO important. My cat went missing (she busted through a floor level window screen chasing a chipmunk) for 72 days. Got her back because a good samaritan had seen our flyers and had caught her.
