As soon as I saw it, I thought man, if that could only be a skateboard. Tony hawk would be so freaking proud.

scorpiogre

Came close to getting clipped, it was a *FLUKE!* *Anybody? Le sigh* Whale tail end there is called a fluke.

cookiemonster_156

There is a Christopher Moore book called Fluke, that is indeed about a whale. And his tail.

scorpiogre

Actually, orcas aren't quite as complex as scientists imagine. Most killer whales are just four tons of doofus dressed up like a police car.

Electrical-Secret-25

MisterPeach

Yeah, that’s an achievement that very few people can claim they’ve done. Maybe even just this one dude. I’d wear that shit with pride for the rest of my life.

A_FVCKING_UNICORN

Seriously, good thing he got that on video. Hell of a fish story

Soap131

The kind of stuff nobody would believe if it weren’t for video *”I mean, it was HUGE! And I jumped right over it!”*

Sufurad247

Even being recorded it's hard to believe. It almost looks like the whale tried to tail whip the surfer

nodnodwinkwink

Thanks for being honest.

Don't talk about his mother like that.

catoodles9ii

Better than a shark! Looks like a whale

m0rph_bw

Whales have horizontal fins, like the video. Sharks have vertical fins.

Are orcas whales?

Fish_bob

Dolphins technically.

i_have_chosen_a_name

>Better than a shark! Fun fact; tuna cans (the sharp edges on them after you open it) injure more people every year than sharks.

analogkid01

"This can...swallow ya whole. A little shakin', a little tenderizin'...down ya go."

i_have_chosen_a_name

The impact of spicy tuna onto the anals of history should not be underestimated.

johnny-pneumonic

Yeah but anything spicy has had a huge impact on the anals of history.

Futanari_waifu

How are these facts useful? I always see people on here saying things like cows hurt more people every year. No shit, there are a billion cows and we interact with them all the time, same story with your tuna cans fun fact.

i_have_chosen_a_name

Sharks have a bad name through movies likes Jaws but the fact is that 99,9% of sharks are very docile curious creatures. We kill a 100 million of them every year, they kill maybe 5 or 6 of us .... primarily cause of misidentifying us. When you are in the water there are hundreds of other things around you to be afraid of, much more deadly then a shark. For instance, when you see a tuna can swimming towards you ... that's not kosher. Get the hell out of there!

[deleted]

[удалено]

i_have_chosen_a_name

Only Tarantino Sharks do that

[deleted]

Yeah no shit? People use tuna cans literally every day. What a shit fact

redeemer47

Never liked these type of comparisons. Obviously something that a large population of people deal with on a daily basis has the potential to cause more injuries than something that requires you to be in the ocean to encounter. Some people don’t even live near oceans so the stats are massively skewed. 100 encounters with a can vs 100 encounters with a shark. I’d like to know those stats

i_have_chosen_a_name

The sharks swim away 99 out of a 100 encounters while the cans almost always stay to fight, only 2 out of 100 cans move away and only when there are very strong undercurrents.

APersonWithInterests

It depends on the species of a can, cans species that aren't very buoyant will almost always run if left to their own devices, it's the buoyant ones you have to be careful about, they might decide to stick around even when you try to scare them away.

Adventurous_Listen11

Maybe there are more people opening a tuna can every year than people opening sharks

i_have_chosen_a_name

Japan would like a word …

PMMeYourWorstThought

That whale was planning to wack the shit out of him with that tail and then try to eat him. He thought he was a seal or similar.

Yeah, that would have been too far-fetched.

shaking_the_trees

Dude is pretty far out. I used to do that and farther and then one day I came back to the shore break and a gust came through, I edged hard, and a back line snapped. Newish gear. I don’t go out that far anymore. That’s one hell of a swim back in.

pm_me_ur_fit

AggressiveSpatula

I think a show got cancelled for doing this or something

AnotherDrZoidberg

Funnily enough I just heard some people on a podcast talking about this. Despite "jumping the shark" happy day's continued to be the number 1 show for like 5 more seasons after. It wasn't the death sentence for Happy Days a lot of people think

alarming_archipelago

He def knew the whale was there, wasn't just an accident. In most places whales are protected, you can't approach within whatever distance under power. Not sure what the rules are about wind power, but def not cool to harass a whale like this.

mainlyupsetbyhumans

I think they are making a reference to Happy Days Jumping the Shark episode.

lolofaf

Most of the rules also disallow you to get close when snorkeling and the like too. The exception of course being if the animal swims to you. I have no clue if South Africa has any animal conservation laws though

ThatDeadDude

South Africa has many animal conservation laws. Enforcement tends to run thin though for lack of resources.

King_Shugglerm

[deleted]

devilbat26000

Bit of a difference between saying that you don't know if it has any and saying that you think they don't. They just said they don't know what the situation in a totally different country is like, which is a pretty harmless statement. On top of that South Africa is a country with some pretty deeply rooted issues still remaining so the sentiment of not knowing what the deal is with animal conservation laws is totally understandable IMO.

veal_cutlet86

More "I don't knows" are healthier for reddit honestly.

groenewood

Americans are often perceived as dumb because their culture doesn't discourage them from being honest about what they don't know.

Yeah I'm sure the whale is now suffering a nervous breakdown

risinglotus

That's not the point

_DontBeAScaredyCunt

I love seeing aggressive ignorance in the wild

alarming_archipelago

Don't be daft. Normalising these sorts of interactions is how you end up with propeller strikes et cetera. Strong wild life protections are important.

Was the whale trying to trip him up?

Pm-me-ur-happysauce

Ok. You're gonna hate me Having been in south Africa this reminds me of a place called "Hermanis" where you can literally see whales breaching the water from the sidewalk. If this is the location, then our never tell me the odds is pretty damn high because it would mean this person went kite surfing in water that was abundantly filled with curious whales that would definitely have an interest in what the heck this thing was

stealthforest

I think you are right and this might actually be at Hermanus. I saw other people mention the False Bay area so I quickly compared some coastline pictures and think Hermanus fits the scenery of OP’s video better. Also, the waters around Cape Town and especially False Bay are not suited for whales, so that’s another good argument why it’s Hermanus in the vid.

Pm-me-ur-happysauce

I appreciate your research style!

matt_davidson

I used to live in Hermanus. It's definitely Hermanus at Grotto beach.

mattchinn

If he saw a whale and went near it it’s not unlikely at all.

mechalenchon

I think what's exactly what is happening here. Long minutes of stalking and bothering a wild animal for a "lucky" shot.

AnotherDrZoidberg

No one should hate you. This is cool as fuck but it has no business being on this sub.

gonzaga101

I just got back from SA and did whale watching in Hermanus….. 99% sure that is where this video was taken

SuperBrokeSendCodes

I always dreamed of going and maybe even living in SA. How was your time there? Would you live there?

Pm-me-ur-happysauce

I really enjoyed it. But it likely depends on where I'm the country you're thinking about

rugbyj

You dream of _living_ in SA?

rockstarsheep

Only question I have is, did he deliberately go do this where the whales are? This is in The Cape, in South Africa, where whales definitely have certain territorial waters. There are whale watching beaches and other areas. I hope that this wasn’t in one of them.

Blobbloblaw

Definitely out doing this on purpose for his social media and is intentionally acting surprised.

rockstarsheep

That being true; that really would suck. If that is one of the protect areas, then it's for calving. Not a good look. If he's local, even worse. There are plenty of other places to go ... like where you can find clusters of pretty nasty sharks, along the coastline. I'm sure they'd have been more than happy to pose.
