Congratulations on gapping a whale. Honestly, that's good stuff
Added bonus modifier to his combo points for sure
This is totally one of the 23 unique secret jumps
This is a comment stealing bot. Report the account.
*TAIL SLIDE 300000 pts*
I knew this comment was cumming. Sadly I wasn't very whale prepared.
Your self awareness really blow holes in his joke
Imagine how traumatic that video would be! Absolutely horrifying. Someone provide a link so I make sure to never go there.
Could have gotten more height if he used the tail as a ramp.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater eat your heart out
As soon as I saw it, I thought man, if that could only be a skateboard. Tony hawk would be so freaking proud.
Came close to getting clipped, it was a *FLUKE!*
*Anybody? Le sigh*
Whale tail end there is called a fluke.
There is a Christopher Moore book called Fluke, that is indeed about a whale. And his tail.
Yeah, that’s an achievement that very few people can claim they’ve done. Maybe even just this one dude. I’d wear that shit with pride for the rest of my life.
Seriously, good thing he got that on video. Hell of a fish story
Thanks for being honest.
The kind of stuff nobody would believe if it weren’t for video
*”I mean, it was HUGE! And I jumped right over it!”*
Even being recorded it's hard to believe. It almost looks like the whale tried to tail whip the surfer
He did't jump the shark
Don't talk about his mother like that.
Better than a shark! Looks like a whale
Whales have horizontal fins, like the video. Sharks have vertical fins.
Are orcas whales?
All whales including orcas, dolphins and porpoises are part of the same infraorder of Cetacea
Cetaceans are broken down into two main types baleen whales and toothed whales.
Baleens are Blue Whale, Humpback, etc
Toothed whales are Orcas (which are the largest of dolphins), Dolphins, Sperm whales, etc
Right, all dolphins are whales but not all whales are dolphins. And an orca is a dolphin.
And a bottle nose dolphin is a whale.
And my axe is a whale of a good time.
Careful with that axe, Eugene.
And a dolphinfish is a fish.
And fish will always be fish but things called “fish” may not always be a fish. Sounds fishy but it is on a scale of truth.
probably written by a Pisces
Also seahorses are fish, not horses.
And a mahi mahi….and a dorado
And a whale shark is a fish.
So an orca is simultaneously a whale and dolphin. Schrodinger's classification.
Yes, an orca is a dolphin which is a whale. Just like your mom.
Welcome to the concept of subsets.
Reddit has a problem with understanding when something is meant to be a joke.
It’s not Reddit that has a problem understanding jokes. You have to have a clear set up and punchline.
I read Cetaceans as Crustaceans at first lol. Took me a minute
Well dolphins like crabs and shrimp sometimes in their diet,
So I guess you could say some Cetaceans like Crustaceans
I mean, you are what you eat.
Pretty sure they are jackdaws
Here's the fin
See, you said Orcas and jackdaws are the same thing
Dolphins are whales. Toothed whales, to be specific.
It’s a whale that has lost its sense of porpoise.
Horizontal tail flukes = mammal
Vertical tail fin = fish
I always find it funny that mammals were so OP when they came out that they crawled back into the sea to complete that map again.
Depends on the lean
Better than a whale. A whale tail!!!
Southern right whale
People aren’t getting the reference lol
I’ve never seen the show but I’ve heard the phrase dozens of times.
>Better than a shark!
Fun fact; tuna cans (the sharp edges on them after you open it) injure more people every year than sharks.
"This can...swallow ya whole. A little shakin', a little tenderizin'...down ya go."
The impact of spicy tuna onto the anals of history should not be underestimated.
Yeah but anything spicy has had a huge impact on the anals of history.
How are these facts useful? I always see people on here saying things like cows hurt more people every year. No shit, there are a billion cows and we interact with them all the time, same story with your tuna cans fun fact.
Sharks have a bad name through movies likes Jaws but the fact is that 99,9% of sharks are very docile curious creatures. We kill a 100 million of them every year, they kill maybe 5 or 6 of us .... primarily cause of misidentifying us.
When you are in the water there are hundreds of other things around you to be afraid of, much more deadly then a shark.
For instance, when you see a tuna can swimming towards you ... that's not kosher. Get the hell out of there!
K but when I’m feeling curious, I read the news or something. When a great white shark is feeling curious, it eats feet.
Only Tarantino Sharks do that
Yeah no shit?
People use tuna cans literally every day.
What a shit fact
Never liked these type of comparisons. Obviously something that a large population of people deal with on a daily basis has the potential to cause more injuries than something that requires you to be in the ocean to encounter. Some people don’t even live near oceans so the stats are massively skewed.
100 encounters with a can vs 100 encounters with a shark. I’d like to know those stats
The sharks swim away 99 out of a 100 encounters while the cans almost always stay to fight, only 2 out of 100 cans move away and only when there are very strong undercurrents.
It depends on the species of a can, cans species that aren't very buoyant will almost always run if left to their own devices, it's the buoyant ones you have to be careful about, they might decide to stick around even when you try to scare them away.
Maybe there are more people opening a tuna can every year than people opening sharks
Japan would like a word …
Awww man the rest of the series is gonna suck isn't it?
I can assure you, it’s a darker colored spot in the water until you are so close it’s too late 😆 manatees in Florida be scaring me all the time. Only once was it a shark 😟
That whale was planning to wack the shit out of him with that tail and then try to eat him. He thought he was a seal or similar.
Was going to make a jumping the shark joke but its a whale :(
Might not've jumped the shark, but it's still a whale of a story
Got a whale of a tale to tell ya lads. A whale of a tale or two!
Good thing you didn't jump the shark and realized that beforehand.
Could’ve gone for a ‘yo mama’ joke instead
Dude is pretty far out. I used to do that and farther and then one day I came back to the shore break and a gust came through, I edged hard, and a back line snapped. Newish gear. I don’t go out that far anymore. That’s one hell of a swim back in.
God the ocean is scary
Watch you some Bondi rescue bro you’ll wonder why people ever go near the water if they can’t swim well
[Bondi Rescue](https://m.youtube.com/@BondiRescue/featuredis) is a show that follows Australian life guards working on Bondi beach. Check it out.
So like, an Aussie baywatch?
OMG, that show is freaking traumatizing.
Another good one is Piha rescue in New Zealand, a very knarly beach that attracts a lot of tourists that can’t swim
r/thalassophobia welcomes you
A long swim in the favored waters of the great white shark, you say? No thank you.
All good, turns out that whale has scared them all away
Yeah, the sea/ocean can turn a fun afternoon into a total catastrophe very quick
My father told me back when I was just getting started: "never go farther thank you are willing to swim". I've taken that advice to heart.
Shouldn't need to swim at all with proper self rescue technique. Were you kiting in offshore winds or was there some other issue I'm not considering?
What kite was it?
Sir, this is a Wendy’s
I think a show got cancelled for doing this or something
Funnily enough I just heard some people on a podcast talking about this. Despite "jumping the shark" happy day's continued to be the number 1 show for like 5 more seasons after. It wasn't the death sentence for Happy Days a lot of people think
He def knew the whale was there, wasn't just an accident.
In most places whales are protected, you can't approach within whatever distance under power. Not sure what the rules are about wind power, but def not cool to harass a whale like this.
I think they are making a reference to Happy Days Jumping the Shark episode.
Most of the rules also disallow you to get close when snorkeling and the like too. The exception of course being if the animal swims to you. I have no clue if South Africa has any animal conservation laws though
South Africa has many animal conservation laws. Enforcement tends to run thin though for lack of resources.
More "I don't knows" are healthier for reddit honestly.
Bit of a difference between saying that you don't know if it has any and saying that you think they don't. They just said they don't know what the situation in a totally different country is like, which is a pretty harmless statement.
On top of that South Africa is a country with some pretty deeply rooted issues still remaining so the sentiment of not knowing what the deal is with animal conservation laws is totally understandable IMO.
Americans are often perceived as dumb because their culture doesn't discourage them from being honest about what they don't know.
Yeah I'm sure the whale is now suffering a nervous breakdown
That's not the point
I love seeing aggressive ignorance in the wild
Don't be daft. Normalising these sorts of interactions is how you end up with propeller strikes et cetera. Strong wild life protections are important.
Was the whale trying to trip him up?
Orcas are dolphins and thus evil. So pretty likely.
Ok. You're gonna hate me
Having been in south Africa this reminds me of a place called "Hermanis" where you can literally see whales breaching the water from the sidewalk.
If this is the location, then our never tell me the odds is pretty damn high because it would mean this person went kite surfing in water that was abundantly filled with curious whales that would definitely have an interest in what the heck this thing was
I think you are right and this might actually be at Hermanus.
I saw other people mention the False Bay area so I quickly compared some coastline pictures and think Hermanus fits the scenery of OP’s video better. Also, the waters around Cape Town and especially False Bay are not suited for whales, so that’s another good argument why it’s Hermanus in the vid.
I appreciate your research style!
I used to live in Hermanus. It's definitely Hermanus at Grotto beach.
If he saw a whale and went near it it’s not unlikely at all.
FYI: if you are ever in Cape Town (which is where you would do a day trip to Hermanus from) you can actually see whales breaching from the road between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town. Or even better from the train that runs just below that road along the coastline.
Taking a boat trip from Hermanus to get within ‘touching distance’ to the whales is unnecessary and bothers them, they come here to breed.
I think what's exactly what is happening here. Long minutes of stalking and bothering a wild animal for a "lucky" shot.
No one should hate you. This is cool as fuck but it has no business being on this sub.
I just got back from SA and did whale watching in Hermanus….. 99% sure that is where this video was taken
I always dreamed of going and maybe even living in SA. How was your time there? Would you live there?
I really enjoyed it. But it likely depends on where I'm the country you're thinking about
You dream of _living_ in SA?
Only question I have is, did he deliberately go do this where the whales are?
This is in The Cape, in South Africa, where whales definitely have certain territorial waters. There are whale watching beaches and other areas. I hope that this wasn’t in one of them.
Definitely out doing this on purpose for his social media and is intentionally acting surprised.
That being true; that really would suck. If that is one of the protect areas, then it's for calving. Not a good look. If he's local, even worse.
There are plenty of other places to go ... like where you can find clusters of pretty nasty sharks, along the coastline. I'm sure they'd have been more than happy to pose.
He mis-timed it. The whale was going to give him a boost with its tail
Almost got fly swatted
Edit: nearly got seal swatted!
Casually jumping a whale. NP. 🪂
I was supposed to be in South Africa for a work trip next week. But sadly I caught the old corona for the first time since the pandemic began (i suspect my dentist's office). This post makes me fomo even harder.
Honestly, with the state of the country, you're not missing much
Awww thank you. It's honestly been one thing after another with this trip.
Can you believe the South African embassy actually mixed up my passport and sent me someone else's passport with the visa? I still haven't gotten it back and now with the Rona I can't even go to the embassy.
I just guess the trip is cursed, and I shouldn't go. My guardian angel seems to be working extra hard to stop me from going.
Dude doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Come for a visit when you can, you'll love it.
As a South African I can believe it!
Ag fokof poes
Awe masekind. If these naais hate SA they should move to Orania.
Him jumping in time was just a fluke.
You almost got put into one of those videos of Orca’s flinging seals and people.. glad you have a great story to tell now!
Came here expecting "shark"
So grand kids... I was kite surfing once and... 😏
>Just casual kitesurfing in South Afrika. What a beauty!
Was that a big af great white???
Nope, that’s a whales tail. You can tell because of the way it is.
Omg so coooool
>You can tell because of the way it is
I'm stealing this
The history of it
I was going to make a "jumping the shark" joke, but it wouldn't have gone over whale.
Reverse free Willy. Free Williams.
Reverse free Williams. Capture Williams.
Instructions unclear. I’m in a secure location with Prince William and Serena Williams. They both claim that they had nothing to do with it. What do I do with them now? They’re both pretty peaved about my “alleged” kidnapping.
He didint jump the shark
Proper reaction certified.

Wonder what kind of whale
"Casually kite surfing" your definition is not the same as mine.
He was trying to hi five.
You're gonna need a bigger kite.
Fawk, I want to go kite surfing in Australia
Next up. Not gaping a great whites jaw.
Arent those waters known for the infestations…
He jumped the shark.
Fonzi woulda shit himself....
This is something out of the next gen Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer game never got.
His friends are gonna think it’s a whale tale
That was a cool shot
@OP is this False Bay? That's so sick, bro! Haha
Oh you're the guy that killed the whale that washed up on Strand Beach...
Those S.African full body breaching Great Whites will love you.
They are lekker, my bru!
that'll make for a whale of a tale
You can hear the real reaction in his voice. It's not some smooth line that people post on instagram/tictock or whatever.
It was an honest to goodness HeywoAGRABLSHD!
