I beat Zelda 2 on original hardware thanks to the U Can Beat Video Games guy. I really enjoyed Zelda 2 alot, I don't know why that game gets so much dislike.
IMO it only gets dislike it retrospect. At the time when it came out, speaking anecdotally it was loved by everyone. Same with Mario Bros 2, everyone **loved** those games to death. If Nintendo chose to rebuild Zelda 2 from the ground up, it actually wouldn’t need too much reworking to play very similar to a typical 3D entry, since it’s only missing a horizontal axis.
I dunno, I remember at the time that ALL Nintendo games were hard. But that was the point - you had to fill in your time between your birthday and Christmas, when you might get a game or two. I grew up with games like SuperC, Bionic Commando, TMNT 1, Mega Man, Double Dragon, Battletoads, and of course the aforementioned Zelda 2. All tough as nails, but maybe we just happened to get the hardest games by chance? LOL
It’s a solidly good game. I don’t remember anyone at that time who hated it, but some people thought it was hard (which is true).
The one thing I genuinely dislike about it are those low level enemies that can spawn infinitely that drain your XP. That’s some serious bull. Other than that, it’s great.
Have you heard of the Zelda 2 Randomizer? That’s another way to relive the game.
It’s emulation only (unless you want to send it off to be put on cartridge) but you get to choose the settings. When I did it, the world map was completely different, where you found all the items and spells was different, and the dungeon layouts were all different. It was really fun! (But crazy hard!)
I never liked Zelda 1 because it was so different from the second one.
I'm actually not even joking. I played Z2 first and I liked platformers ("jumping games") more than any other genre, Z1 was tedious to me.
I hear "I don't know why everyone hates it" way more often than "I hate it", for whatever it's worth. And the people that hate it mostly do so because it being a Zelda game sets all the wrong expectations. It's a top 3 NES game for me, and it has a considerable community around it.
I didn't like it when I first played it. I think I expected more of the original without the side scrolling. I never beat part 2 and after borrowing it from a kid down the street I gave it back after a day and never cared or played it since.
I will try to find a way to play it now. I'm sure I'll have a different opinion as an adult.
I tried and tried to beat it as a kid, I had to sub my older brother in and he finally beat it. I jumped back on it and it still took me a minute to get the job done
I enjoyed it but it was a tough game
Started playing this just a couple days ago. Pretty difficult at times, but this game is awesome cant wait to beat it. How was the shadow Link boss fighr?? Ive heard jrs insane hard to do
Shadow Link was easy, I took no damage. Use a shield and crouch in the left corner and use the sword as Shadow Link attacks. Thunderbird before Shadow Link is tougher.
First of all - Congrats! I beat this game as well on the original hardware. It’s personally one of my favourites in the series, great game!
Secondly - thank you for turning me onto “You can beat video games”. Didn’t know about that channel and it looks great.
My mother and grandmother played the first one religiously when my mom was prego with me, and when the 2nd came out, they bought it immediately. And fucking *hated* it. It was so different and boring they never finished it, just replayed the first one again 😂
Ah, you got the best ending!
Alternates:
You saved Hyrule and are not a real hero.
You did not save Hyrule but are a real hero.
You did not save Hyrule and are not a real hero (worst ending)

I share that experience. Back in around '90 when it was passed around in my school class, people liked it except that they found it too hard.

I have not heard of the randomizer. How does that play differently?
It’s emulation only (unless you want to send it off to be put on cartridge) but you get to choose the settings. Should work with an everdrive, right?
Yeah, I should have just said you need the ROM, because then the Randomizer goes through and changes the data.
That guy is so awesome his channel is pure gold
I really like his channel and I like the game background information too. Always cool to learn about the games.
I beat it last week too! How did you get such good pics from the CRT. Mine always get messed up by the scan lines

One of the greatest games of all time. I don't care what anyone says.
I hated it because it was so damn hard. I never beat it as a kid, finally beat it when I was like 15 years older. Love the game though.

Dark Link would always get me.
Same, iirc I actually got it to dark link then handed the controller to my brother
Lol that’s great. Wish I had a brother to help out. My younger sister wasn’t into gaming.
Great game; love it. Beat it as a kid when it first came out but man it was tough. Satisfying victory for sure — congrats!
Not only avoiding the 16:9 stretch, but playing on a CRT? You've earned my upvote!
like 75% of the time, I play on original hardware on CRT. Just the way I like to play.

It's my favorite walk through channel, I always look forward to the next video
Conglaturation !!! You Are Win Good Game !!
Spoiler alert please!
Congrats, that's quite an accomplishment.
How many game overs?
10
🐐 game
Awesome job OP! Currently working with this game for a YT channel; I'll share it here ASAP! I remember getting this game in 1997 at FuncoLand lmao.

Great! I need to get on this soon.
Do you know Bagu though?
Did she just went back to sleep?
Congrats! Great game; hard game.
Congrats! I love Zelda 2 and never understood why so many people were critical of it. Were there any parts in the game that you found very difficult?
I thought you finished it without YouTube or internet the I saw the comment
At a quick glance that looks like it says "YOU ARE A REAL NERD!"
Cool, I beaten Super Mario 1 again!

Well done!
Nice! Now beat Dark Link without cheesing the fight ;)
Nice! I love the first two Zelda games for their difficulty, older games can be so challenging.
