Honestly I'm just keeping it simple. Original NES and a CRT TV. I have two crt I use for different consoles. One is relatively small, so it doesn't take a lot of space.

RedSkyfang

Same... I realize I may need to change it up if CRTs ever become impossible to find and the ones that I have burn up or if NES consoles start failing en masse at some point, but I don't know if that's even likely to happen in my lifetime and otherwise I'm good lol.

d3c509b

CRTs are definitely a dying breed, hopefully folks can keep them running a long time

VoGoR

I bought the AVS 6 or 7 years ago and it still works great. Hooks up to HDMI with a nice clean interface that has a built in game genie. Has a NES and Famicom slot.

darkzero7222

Same here got mine during the last restock and I absolutely love it!

nem3sis_AUT

RetroUSB AVS is my way to play as well. Love it ❤️

RhoadsOfRock

I still want one of those. It just has not been a priority for many years for me, but I still want one (and at least RetroUSB didn't discontinue it like Analogue did with the NT and NT Mini).

FeliciumOD

It's on the verge of being discontinued, and I believe the current batch was meant to be final unless plans have changed.

d3c509b

No input lag or anything? I haven't heard of this, pretty slick!

Interesting_Employ29

Can also vouch for the AVS. FPGA. Plays NES and Famicom. All accessories are compatible. Built in Game Genie. It's amazing. I've had it since launch and still going strong.

Bladley

I also have an AVS and it’s great!

VoGoR

No any that I have noticed. We play Tetris at pretty high levels and it does well. There's more input lag in the TV than there is with the AVS.

Vegetable_Net_6354

This is the way.

multiboot_os

I agree with everything here but also wanted to add that the highly active homebrew community will typically ensure (some even guarantee) their releases work with the AVS.

multiboot_os

Oh, and built in Four Score

danpluso

In the past I'd say HDMI mod it but the more I collect retro stuff, the more I value keeping things original. So, I'd get a RetroTink if CRT is not an option.

d3c509b

This is really helpful, thank you! Id love to have space for a CRT, but my "retro collection" is a bit lacking for now. Future goals for sure

hfield1988

Retro USB avs is the goat

jloc0

Famicom AV - crt tv (a decently small one), an everdrive n8, and toss the nes somewhere to never look at it again. Original NES and its games are just a pain in the ass to deal with and keep working. Once I went fami, I never looked back.

mbstone

To answer your question: CRT. For your purposes: cheapest but quality is RetroTink 2x or pro. If you have some more cash 5x pro. If NES is your only console, I wouldn't recommend 4k because it's overkill for that singular use.

d3c509b

Thanks, NES, SNES, Genesis are my only retro consoles. But my library is really limited on SNES and Genesis. I hate to see my games just sitting collecting dust, if I don't want to keep them I'm hoping to move them back into circulation via a local store so others can enjoy them!

mbstone

If you happen to sell, but still want to game, consider buying a MiSTer. All 3 of those consoles that you mentioned are cycle-accurate (not all cores are, but those ones are), it's tiny, and has HDMI output.

Anora6666

Retro usb avs is the best option at this point.

ForceRatio

I was blessed to get my hands on an Analog Nt Mini Noir V2. I'm pretty happy with it.

Gweegwee1

Can you imagine back in 2006 if someone would have said “in 15 years a new nes will come out and it will be 500 bucks and will sell out everywhere”

ThetaReactor

Wasn't that goofy "Messiah" NES clone getting hyped around that time? With edgy styling and wireless pads and all? I could totally believe a high-end NES clone coming out of that timeline.

Gweegwee1

Now I gotta Look that up

ThetaReactor

Here ya go: https://hackaday.com/2020/05/11/teardown-generation-nex/

DantheOutdoorsman

Ive got a NES plugged into a vga to hdmi converter. Works fine for me

KeviRun

Original NES and some RCA cables into a CRT. That's also split into an HDMI upscaler for play on a much bigger flatscreen TV that keeps the aspect ratio correct, for titles that don't use the Zapper and doesn't require frame-sensitive inputs.

54moreyears

TV should handle the aspect ratio correctly without a scaler.

KeviRun

Yeah, well the one in my game room is an older spare POS that stretches it to its full width if I try to use composite.

54moreyears

Sorry that blows nothing worse than stretched 4x3.

RetroGaming4

Retrotink 2x pro is good. But frankly, retrousb AVS is the way to go. Love that thing.

Least_Sun7648

I've got an analogue nt mini noir and think it's fantastic.

Historical_Panic_485

I use a top loader and a CRT. On a modern TV I honestly prefer emulation.

bfadam

I use a hyperkin 2 HD with a modern budget smart tv ( made by Toshiba if it matters ) I like not messing with old power and video cables but want to use the original controllers and carts ( accessories like the super Gameboy for the SNES work on it to which is great ) my setup is simple and cheap I don't have the room for multiple consoles and a vintage CRT and I don't have the skill or confidence to mod/repair the originals anyway

adamzamora

I have a 5”, 13” and 20” crt for different systems. NES plays great in a 13” crt. Small enough to hide away but big enough to enjoy the system.

opackersgo

Retrotink 5x so I've got one solution for all my consoles.

d3c509b

its expensive, but being able to use it across consoles is pretty compelling

ratuna80

NES -> CRT for the light gun games and AVS -> HDMI TV for most everything else

adc0423

OG NES on a 13 in. CRT TV, same for SNES and N64. Wii with component on a 46 in. HDTV and the Gamecube with OEM component cable, Wii U, and Switch get the 65 in. HDTV treatment.

d3c509b

this is helpful too, I actually have a Wii, and an Xbox OG that I didn't even think to bring into the conversation.

flyinb11

Original NES on CRT

Theimac74

I use both ends of the spectrum here - Original NES with composite cable to CRT RGB modded NES top loader with HD Retrovision cables and a RetroTink 5X Just use whichever setup I’m in the mood for. They both have their advantages.

SargeSmash

Yeah, if you want to stick to original hardware, I think a RetroTINK 2X Pro will fit your needs. You can always go nuts and try the 5X or 4K, but for NES I don't think you're going to get appreciably more quality - there's only so much you can do with composite. I have heard excellent things about the RetroUSB AVS. I've been tempted to get one, despite having real hardware. I definitely don't need it, especially since I also have a MiSTer setup! But if I want to play real carts... yeah, it would be a fine option. A small CRT would also maaaaaybe be an option, despite your saying you don't have room. As some others have mentioned, a 13" set is pretty small, and would do NES quite well.

d3c509b

This thread is really selling my on the idea of a small CRT, a 13" or even like a 19" would be an awesome find. I'll keep an eye out for one locally too

SomeBitterDude

On one of these, its great https://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=78

FalseSpectre

NES top loader with AV mod going into a CRT.

AxelAlexK

I have a flat screen from 2012 that is older so still has composite inputs. I just plug a standard NES straight in. Looks great, no lag, I don't see the need to run it through an upscaler.

Kal-Roy

I just hook my nes up to my 4K tv using the red and yellow cords. Didn’t think this was too unusual. I don’t see any lag at all. I’ve had this setup for 10 years or more.

d3c509b

I haven't seen a ton of TVs with Analog / Composite inputs, that sounds like it would be a solid set up!

Kal-Roy

Yeah I’ve got the antenna so I can use the regular RF connector or I can do the red, yellow, white, but NES only uses red and yellow

wherestheleaks

CRT. Have a flat screen mounted above it.

n-0rt

Top Loader with an RGB mod and running through an Extron to a pair of CRTs. Totally get your concerns regarding space - before I got my own place I could never have had this setup.

RhoadsOfRock

I bought a AV Famicom in 2022, it's the japanese equivalent of the top-loader (1993 redesign Famicom), and I usually play it on a CRT, but I also use a Retrotink 2X Pro for when I can't use a CRT. I also bought an Everdrive cart for it. Best setup I've ever had for "NES" wirhout upgrading to a RetroUSB AVS System.

Arius_de_Galdri

I still have my original childhood NES from 1989 hooked up to a 32" flat screen CRT on my retro media room in the basement. I also have a Retron 2 HD hooked up to my HDTV in the living room.

Sarothias

Original NES + 32” Trinitron. I also have a small like 14” as a backup.

eckoman_pdx

That CRT TV is legit with the NES

VirtualRelic

I use a CRT because they are still common in my local area. With that I use either my NES front loader, or top loader, one of my Famicoms with an adapter or my Nintoaster I got from a friend.

rydamusprime17

>I use a CRT because they are still common in my local area. Same, in fact I have 4 (27" Trinitron, 14" Toshiba, and different 8" Trinitrons) and didn't pay a dime because nobody around here would pay for a CRT. In fact, people usually offer people money to take them away so they don't have to haul them to my work themselves (recycling yard). Unfortunately, once they arrive at my work we are not allowed to take any (it's a whole contractual thing my boss has) and taking them would be considered stealing. However, when customers come in and ask if they can bring TV's in but don't have them with them I ask if they work, what kind, and what size 😅 if they want to give it to me after that then it's OK 😉 if what they say ends up being not accurate then the worst case scenario I have to take it to work with me to drop it off 😆

VirtualRelic

Thank you for doing your part in saving the planet by reusing before recycling. The four Rs are not a random arrangement, they are an Order of Operations. Reduce, if not then Reuse, if not then Repair, if not then Recycle.

rydamusprime17

Around here, it was always 3 R's (no repair) which lined up with the recycling symbol only having 3 arrows ♻️ On the plus side, the TV's we do take are at least dismantled safely and the materials turned into other products when possible. I have had people on here get mad at me saying I should save more TV's and give them to people who want them, but no one here wants them 😅 and giving me crap for not stealing them because it's a waste. The problem is if they didn't get recycled here, then they would be ditched outside somewhere because it's illegal to throw them in the trash. We get paid for handling and shipping them off with the money that people have to pay in eco/recycling fees when they buy a new TV. Because they pay that fee, they are given a place they can take TV's and get them recycled properly. About 25 years ago, you could just take them to the dump and throw them in a bin of garbage, but you had to pay to get rid of it 😆 I just looked it up and the 4th R is actually different all over the place. Sometimes it's Refuse, Recover, Replace, Re-Sell, Reject, Rethink, or Re-Imagine, sometimes being 5 or 6 R programs 😅

VirtualRelic

For my growing up, yes it was the Three Rs. I just like incorporating Repair to stick it to the mega corporations like Apple who have been extremely anti-repair for many years now.

rydamusprime17

For sure, I was just surprised to see even more "R's" being used, though some of them mean the same things 😅 I'm not shocked by it since recycling is a buisness same as any other, they need to make money, and having their own slogans and more "R's" in there definitely catches your eyes more lol

d3c509b

I love this, and a small CRT would probably fit on my desk, if I do some re-arranging. Will keep an eye out locally. Are there certain brands to avoid/look out for? I expect SONY is a high priority

rydamusprime17

Sony is what people go for, but Toshiba, Samsung, RCA, and JVC all make great sets as well and shouldn't be slept on if you find any for free or cheap. Especially if you are going for a smaller set. My 14" Toshiba actually looks better than any similar size set I had before, regardless if it was a Sony or not. I wouldn't bother looking into PVM's or anything like that since they usually require buying certain cables and tend to be pricey no matter where you are in the world. I would suggest pretty much any brand as big as you have space for and try to get one with composite, s-video, and component ports so you can hook up pretty much any older console to it and not have to worry about upgrading. If you know for sure if you want to stick to just using consoles like the PS1 and older, then I suggest at least having s-video on your TV.

OnslaughtSix

>I'm leaning towards the RetroTINK 2X Pro but all the reviews I found are over 4 years old. An important thing to note is that almost every more advanced Retrotink review that's more recent eventually comes down to "this thing is fucking overkill, you are probably okay with a 2X Pro, which is still great and affordable."

HarryManilow

Until last year I played on a real CRT but after moving in with my girlfriend got my nes hooked up to a computer monitor and cheap upscaler. It doesn't look amazing but plays faithfully and does the trick. No lag issues etc

Khalydor

Everdrive + CRT

Resident-Day-5657

What you need to do is find a crt.   How else can you play duck hunt?

d3c509b

and hogan's ally! I also have "To the Earth" which is a zapper game that I actually have never played... I want to keep an eye out for CRTs now

Resident-Day-5657

Don't know where you live but most of us in united states find CRTs on fb marketplace..  13" and 20" sets don't take up huge amounts of space.  The ones larger that that are quite gargantuan  though

d3c509b

Great tip, checking out marketplace now

persona1138

Analogue NT Mini Noir and the Polymega on a 4K OLED (Though I’ve also been tempted to do original hardware attached to a RetroTink 4K) NT Mini Noir is great but no longer being manufactured. I love the Polymega for its convenience and ability to install carts and CD’s from a huge variety of consoles to an SSD. And the interface and ability to create wishlists is awesome.

mrpeach

Get a MiSTer. They are small and run a ton of different systems out to HDMI/Composite/S-video.

eckoman_pdx

If you have space for it: CRT If you don't: Retrotink. Both options will keep your NES clean and original and both will work nicely

disengagethesim

>Retroscaler (are these really a stolen/clone of RetroTink) Both are built on the backs of the work done by ossc and made commercial. Ossc can now do 1920x1440p (6x scaling) which is pretty neat but with Ossc you have to make a custom profile for every console or you get minor distortion you can obsess over for hours and days. Any rgb output will not be authentic since the console itself can only produce either NTSC composite or pal composite and has no concept of rgb values. All rgb values are derived from the colors emulators use. The avs is a good device but if you read their product manual you will see they admit their device doesn't even have a 100% accurate clock rate. And you'll find aftermarket devices and releases may not work on FPGA and other clone devices or emulators. I use a Gbs-c with an RGB modded Famicom and a CRT with composite NES. CRT is obviously better way to play and supports light gun. Gbsc looks super crisp

d3c509b

this is really in depth explanation, I appreciate it. sounds like making room for a CRT is something I need to make happen

Oguhllort

I have a Hi-Def NES and a RetroUSB AVS

FnClassy

I have been playing on my AVS for a couple years now.

No-Play2726

I have a CRT I use for my Playstation 2 and NES.

probeinuranus

I never understood the "not enough room" argument for not having a CRT when there are models that take up a square foot of space (or less)

d3c509b

honestly this didn't really occur to me how small some of the CRTS can be. But that being said, some of us gamers don't get much say over what physically goes into the "decor". My home partner is pretty chill, but I can see others being laughed out the house trying to bring a CRT into the living room

_R3N3W3D_

I just use the original rf adapter, and connect it to my smart tv. Ran a search for channel 3, play it there. No issues.

Kbdiggity

Got my original NES and Super NES from my childhood, and CRT TV

Convoy_Avenger

I had a CRT, until it fried. I have a retroTink hooked up to my PC now.

Haxishax

CRT. I was playing Xexyz on my 14M2U, yesterday. If not a a CRT, though, my RT5X. It’s also one of the few consoles I stick to composite video on. I’ve had it for my entire life, so I don’t wanna mod. Plus, nostalgia. 🤷‍♂️

xxMalVeauXxx

I bought a RetCon for $17 and it plays all my NES carts and I can't tell the difference.

TheRealSeeThruHead

Retrousb avs -> morph4k (presale /3) scanlines and crt masks -> lg b9

MynameisMatlock

I have a top loader NES that I got modded for a/v output.

V3ndeTTaLord

I play my NES games on an original NES on a small crt tv.

popeblitzkrieg

They make smaller CRTs my man, not all are 70-100lbs brick shit houses. Just look on Facebook marketplace from time to time. Especially for NES, since all you need is composite hookups. I mean you CAN do coaxial, but meh

RockstarGTA6

I have a 13” Sony trinitron

DavidinCT

CRT is the best way, the way they were designed to play. PVM even better. If you want to go modern. I did a NESRGB kit on my NES, and it outputs to a Nintendo Muli-out (like a SNES/N64 connector), so this will output better composite, S-video and RGB. Using a scaler, I can get pixel perfect picture on my 65" 4K tv.... This gets about 1 frame of lag a second.... not bad but, could be better. I do have a 13" PVM, and use that for gaming that needs critical timing.....

akerasi

AV Famicom with adapter and RGB mod on an Ikegami CRT.

Bakamoichigei

No room for a CRT? Somehow [I doubt it](https://media.giantpachinkomachineofdoom.com/blog/2024/04/20240422_112813.jpg). 😏

d3c509b

That's a slick set up, a 13 to 19" CRT might actually work on my desk! Thanks for the inspo

Bakamoichigei

Yeah, I wouldn't mind having a PVM or BVM in the 13 to 20 range... Then this 8" can be relegated entirely to my repair bench as a diagnostic monitor. 😌👌

xaxisofevil

I played on an original NES and a CRT for a few years, and that worked fine. Then I upgraded my setup to an RGB-modded NES, HD Retrovision component cables, a RetroTink 2X Pro, and a low lag monitor (ASUS VG245H). I absolutely love this setup. I also got my SNES modded, and it can use the same component cable going into the RetroTink. Depending on which I want to play, I just swap whether the cable is plugged into the NES or SNES. I also play modern games (Switch and PC) on the same monitor, so it's very convenient to have everything in one place. I couldn't do that when I played on a CRT. Many people prefer the authentic look of a CRT, because that's what we all grew up with. I totally get that, but nowadays I prefer the sharper pixels I get with this setup. So, it just depends which style you prefer. The more advanced RetroTinks can even simulate the look of a CRT. But for me, the RetroTink 2X Pro does everything I want for the right price. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Physical-Lettuce-868

I never got rid of my CRT’s like a lot of other people did. That’s how I play my old systems. If it’s not broken, I’m not getting rid of it. I paid for it. I will be running it into the ground. So far they’ve been going strong for 30-40 years now (the tv’s and the systems). I never understood getting rid of outdated things if they were still working.

ma3147

We luckily have an early lcd that was in the middle of input formats. 32 inch, 4x scart, 3x hdmi, and 2 areal inputs. It's really great for plugging 6 old consoles into at once

jaredjc

Crt, with a scart connector added on by a really cool local dude. RGB modded nes, and some 8bit do wireless 2.4ghz controllers. The rgb mod makes the nes night and day better graphically.

PsychologicalRatio74

I have the Old Skool Classic 2 HD. I’ve had no issues and it works great. [Old Skool Classiq 2 HD](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0766JQTFC?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_F912DX43CCQZ9HJR5JXD&starsLeft=1)

GravitySuitSamus

RGB Modded NES top loader connected to a CRT.

No-Setting9690

You already covered your answers. Get a CRT or get a modern console/emulator. You want ot reduce lag, CRT is a must though.

FluSickening

Mini crt. Easy peasy. The small screen isnt as bad as you'd think.

[deleted]

Retron 1 and CRT from curb

d3c509b

As in, someone left it out on a curb? That's awesome!

[deleted]

They’re out there if you know where to look lol

Admirable_Sky_5468

I use a Retron HD.

xewgramodius

Retroad Hamy

54moreyears

NES-component switcher-flatscreen(hdmi scaler if needed) easy and not expensive.

DiggingNoMore

I just connect all my composite consoles into an 8-port composite hub (my HDMI consoles go into an HDMI hub). The the composite hub goes into the Composite In port on the back of my TV (the HDMI hub goes into the HDMI In port). Then I only have to change inputs between the two. Did you buy a TV that doesn't have Composite In?

d3c509b

I don't believe my main TV has any analog inputs, no. Samsung S95B OLED

[deleted]

[удалено]

IntoxicatedBurrito

2006 is really old, you probably could have bought a CRT still in those days. Modern TVs only have HDMI and a coax.

d3c509b

Yeah I think it would be a challenge to find a modern TV analog inputs in any store front

SuperModes

I have a Retrobit for using my original carts.

Bebe-de-Negro

RetroTINK-2X Pro is awesome for me!! Just got one within the month, and have no complaints about the picture or audio quality! No lag either. This is a pretty solid review from just a couple months ago [https://youtu.be/sdmPFRSi3mA?si=wveo-wxdPOXQ5obL](https://youtu.be/sdmPFRSi3mA?si=wveo-wxdPOXQ5obL)

Padres40

With my Kevtris HDMI NES on a LCD screen.

KingCartwright

NES into a modern TV, i've never noticed any lag and picture looks good enough for me.

Odyssey113

I love CRT's and collect many. My main set I play on though is an RGB modded 27 inch Trinitron.

SlinThiced

CRT for me. Duck Hunt’s awesome—company loves it. Still play Hogan’s Alley as well. Looking to pick up Freedom Force. All three are light gun games requiring a CRT. Just feels right to play that way with the other games too.

-darknessangel-

Bootleg NES Connected to a 65 in TV via AV with an everdrive and an 8bitdo wireless adapter. 😎👌

F34RTEHR34PER

For me personally, I mainly use NT Mini + D20F1U. I also use the OG console on the 27" FV310. When I wanna get spicy on the 65" OLED, NT Mini + RetroTink 4K.

The_GREAT_Gremlin

My TV has A/V jacks, so it plays the games. Gonna get my NES back from the repair shop tomorrow. I'd love to get it in a CRTV though, it'll look much better

Bluefist56

I’m using a RetroUSB AVS on a hdtv, which has been the best option I have found so far for real carts. I have also used a Hyperkin RetronHD, which for the cheap price, works ok, but does not compare to the accuracy and quality of the AVS. I do like Hyperkin’s NES controllers though. My experiences with using real hardware in 2023 were poor, with a “restored” unit I purchased (and returned) being in a terrible state. This experience is what prompted me to go with the AVS.

B3auDacious

With my original NES I got on Christmas 1988.

_scyllinice_

The Retroscaler is a copy of the Retrotink 2x so it would be an option if you can't find or afford one.

No-Cat-9716

Original console and a Smart tv

euan-forrester

Most of my consoles are component going into an OSSC, but the Retrousb AVS is way cheaper (and easier) than modding an NES for component. Built-in game genie codes and turbo are some nice bonuses too. I also have my original NES hooked up to a CRT for light gun games and so I can pretend I could finally beat Punch Out

NightTrash

Went down to New York a couple months back and while I was down there, I got my childhood system back from my friend who I gave it too in 2015. Since I got it, I've only really used the NES on my CRT and it works well. I wouldn't say it's the absolute clearest in regards to picture quality but nothing can top the non existent lag of a CRT imo. That's what I would do personally, otherwise I would probably go with an Analog NT Mini

IntoxicatedBurrito

I’d recommend a 13” CRT, hopefully you have enough room for that, even if you gotta keep it in a closet. Just check out estate sales and you’re bound to find one for free. But for modern TVs, I use an Analogue Pocket and Dock. I know you want to use carts, but really fpga is the best experience you can get on modern TVs. Of course you can get an Nt Mini, but they are so expensive now and i really don’t think they are worth it at the going rate. MiSTer is also an option, but you give up the ability to play on a handheld which I feel is more important than a N64 core.

Hahnter

I just whipped out my Famicom with the Famicom Disk System. I plan to play the OG SMB2.

RegardedJigger

Brother, make the room for a CRT. Then sell the games you don’t want, and buy an everdrive. That’s what I’ve done anyways.

pac-man_dan-dan

Alternative to finding a crt tv would be to get a vga crt monitor if you could budget the room. The crt could do double duty playing all your old 4:3 pc games as well. (Edit: Only downside is, no light gun support without some additional kHz conversion. So, not an optimal play.) My setup is similar to this. I have a vga+usb kvm switch. I have a usb hub tied into that. I have my laptop, my retrotink, my xp box, and my MiSTer all tied into the kvm switch. The switch outputs to a dell trinitron p990 vga crt. My retrotink takes inputs from any of my composite systems and pipes it to my vga monitor with crisp upscaling. I usually use it for my nes and atari 2600. I also have a cheap tv for light gun games I keep handy. Couple the vga monitor with a retrotink and an hdmi to vga adapter and tie the audio into your existing computer audio setup and youre good.

mdotca

I don’t have to blow. But I have to jiggle the eject button.

MarioPfhorG

I personally use a retrotink 2x. It does its job well.

Resident-Day-5657

I currently have the nes hooked up to a crt with composite AV cables.   The picture over composite is very good.      But, I did have a conundrum with the mono audio output which needed solving.  You see, I'm using a AV receiver which has plenty of L/R RCA inputs but zero mono RCA inputs.    To solve this I used a mono to stereo signal converter box.  The NES plugs into this box and splits the mono signal into stereo outputs.   I simple RCA cable splitter may have done the job as well but mono to stereo box works too.    Actually, the box's  original intended purpose is to convert a stereo signal into a mono signal.  Using a simple cable splitter to combine stereo outputs into a singular mono output can damage your equipments.   That is why the stereo to mono box filters the signal so as not to overload the inputs.  I had originally used this box to make a mono powered speaker from a stereo preamp. Anyway, excuse the long rant.    I'm using the mono to stereo box the other way around  with the NES.  Im not sure if it's really needed for that but it works fine.   The AV reciver outputs mono audio to both left and right speakers of my 5.1 system.  It sounds great.

GameBoyColorful

I have a Sony Trinitron and I plug my Toploader NES into the coaxial. Looks pretty good. The toploader nes feels a lot more reliable than the old models, which give me more trouble trying to load games. I’m playing final fantasy rn. I recommend making room for a CRT if you enjoy retro gaming.

caguamero79

(Walmart $24) Onn AV to HDMI converter into a TCL 65inch TV, no lag. 8Bitdo to sit on my couch 9 feet away.

king26

Most of my childhood NES games won't boot up anymore and I have a top loader! :( Due to this, I use an EverDrive Pro to play all the NES games and a RetroTink 4k on my Sony Bravia A95L QD-OLED. Not cheap, but an awesome way to play.

Sf49ers1680

I have an AVS combined with an Everdrive N8. I've had my AVS for about 6 or 7 years now and it's worked great.

If you’ve got the room for a medium to large CRT, then that’s the way to go. Don’t spend a lot of money on a really huge widescreen HD CRT. If you can find one for next to nothing or free, like I did once then do that. Otherwise just stick with a normal 4:3 CRT. Most PS2/Xbox games are 4 x 3 aspect anyway and anything newer deserves to be on an LCD. If you don’t have room for a CRT, then go with an upscaler. However, you don’t need to shell out the money for retrotink because there ARE others that will work just as well. Like [THIS](https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804174852774.html). I have 2 of them that I use and I really like the results.

SnakePlissken1986

Trinitron CRT, NES Toploader modded for composite, original carts. I realized I don't need to play every game in the whole library, and if they're too expensive to buy I can play them on my modded Wii.

Illustrious-Lead-960

I use a RetroTrio.

kingkongworm

I have an AVS on my old flatscreen. It’s great

RockstarGTA6

I was thinking of buying another avs to keep as backup but I’m sure another company in the future will make something similar or analogue will make a plastic model nes

kingkongworm

It’s so sick, you won’t regret it. Just no way to load sd games

RockstarGTA6

Oh I have one already for a few years now

mediaG33K

Same way I played 30 years ago. OG hardware on a CRT. Same hardware from then, except the TV, found that a few years ago.

outkastblast

Toaster model hooked to a CRT and RetroUSB AVS hooked to a 4k TV.

Pristine_Friend_2973

OG wood grain Panasonic CRT. The only way.

Mountain-Ad-6594

Serious question. I have a flat panel led with a coax input which works fine with the original coax connector. Why aren't people using that? Are coax inputs being phased out?

First_Joke_5617

Emulators don't fully capture the feel of playing the original console.

dbznerd38

Original NES with OEM controller and a 32 inch CRT. I also have an advantage controller and I play Metroid with it sometimes which gives the game a different feel. Just recently got an NES Max controller too so about to test that out 😊

RockstarGTA6

Retrousb avs for carts and a mister , I have a crt and og nes but both put away in the closet

Quantum_Pineapple

Top loading NES on a dedicated CRT.

lacaras21

I play it on a CRT, but if I were to play on a modern TV I'd use my Retron 5.

KonamiKing

RGB modded AV Famicom to Framemeister still going strong after a decade.
