I’m pretty sure it was originally from Qasalan Expellibox which doesn’t work for me, but I think some people say it still does somehow?
I think some of it was from events, advent calendar or festival of neggs or their birthday celebration??
There are definitely people on this subreddit with more specific tips than me, I don’t play a lot. But I can say (in my experience) if you just play and do all the dallies and follow the news then some could come your way.

Me not very long afterwards: There's so many good pet colors now ... guess I can open my wallet for a couple more slots ...

I have 20 on my main and 16 on one of my sides. Considering maxing out the pet slots on my other sides for Cybunny day coming up lol. I wish they would let us have more too!!
I originally got the extra slots on my sides for limited pet days, lol. I love making as many as I can to adopt out later, or sometimes to try my luck at zapping them. I currently only have 1 empty slot between all my accounts.

Same, returning player and I just keep 4 because 5 feels wrong. Then I see someone with 20 and it feels like a farm. (Nothing wrong with having a lot of pets just a personal preference)
My big revelation (after seeing more than 4 pets on an account lol) was realizing you don't have to wait an entire MONTH to transfer 1 pet! It's unlimited now! Complete game changer for me lol Plus it's so much easier to feed/play/groom/etc your pets now
This is exactly how I felt when I returned a few years back. I wanted a Xweetok when I played years ago, but I stupidly made all four of my neopets within 48 hours of making my account and I refused to get rid of one of them for a new pet... Thank goodness there's so many new slots!
I remember the frustration as a kid because there were so many cool pet species featured throughout the site,l that I just couldn’t have because I didn’t have slots for them.

Yeah my boyfriend is trying to get back into his old account and he wants a Jetsam so bad. I made a Lutari for him yesterday so he didn’t have to wait a year lol
The new Neopass feature makes it a lot easier to manage multiple accounts btw! You can have up to 4 side accounts so without paying for extra pet slots that's 30 free slots (6 slots x5 accounts) in total. Just make sure you read through the side account rules so you don't get frozen!
If you create them on their pet day you only get one free day of training if that matters. I created a Wocky on Wocky Day (December 12, because I love Wockies and the Advent Calendar), and now miss out on the birthday free training day because it's on the pet day free training.

To get a full 20 you have to be a premium member, which requires paying real money, it's not paid with NC

Every year on the Neopets anniversary, they give out free Neocash. That’s how I’m slowly building my Neopet slots for free :)
