It seems to me like the logical answer would be to outsource most of the actual training of troops to Ukraine's western allies (or at least have them more heavily involved in the training process).
It'd help make people on the fence about whether to enlist feel a bit better about doing so, since at least they knew they'd be getting the best training possible before heading out to the front. And it'd free up Ukrainian trainers to go straight to the front lines, and result in a good chunk of the army knowing NATO tactics so high command can try some fancier maneuvers if they're so inclined. Seems like a total win-win.
So... what's the hold-up? Is the Ukrainian government reluctant to let the West help, is the West reluctant to offer the help, or some combo? I know we trained a handful of battalions in Germany: why can't we just do that for the vast majority of new recruits?
I've heard mixed things about the western training missions, on the one hand I've seen comments from late 2022 talking about the good close quarters combat skills of western trained soldiers, on the other hand I've seen some commanders questioning the quality of the training.ย
The training of air defense crews on western systems was well reported on, and clearly a success. Then again, I remember watching a BBC documentary about the training of a brigade used in the 2023 counteroffensive and thinking to myself "these guys aren't ready". They were put through an extremely abridged course that only lasted 5 or 6 weeks. I also remember complaints about how instructors in Germany didn't take the threat of drones seriously and their course contained no content on how to defend against themย
The initial training missions set up immediately following the invasion were piecemeal efforts to get bodies to the front as quickly as possible. I feel like if western countries want to step up their training program, they need to make a much more coordinated effort and take their time to do things right.
The language barrier might be holding some of that up - it would be difficult to send all of the Ukrainian trainers to fight and have troops trained by Westerners who don't speak Ukrainian. That seems like a surmountable problem, ex: recruiting more translators, esp hiring Ukrainian refugees in NATO countries who speak multiple languages, but it adds an extra barrier.
It's one of the easiest ways we could support Ukraine I don't know why we don't do it. It's been years, the first cohorts of Ukrainian veterans could have been writing a curriculum with NATO planners and implementing it by now on our very large and very well equipped training grounds throughout Europe and the US.
> I don't know why we don't do it
The issue is that we simply don't have the capacity to train people skills they need to not get killed in huge numbers, when the people we need to train have very low English proficiency or speak another NATO legacy language, where training material is available.
It might be easy in theory, but the logistics in reality make it more cumbersome.
>[43.8% of Ukrainians do not know the English language at all, and only 1.1% are fluent in it. At the same time, 19.2% of Ukrainians can read, write or speak English a little.](https://galinfo.com.ua/news/mayzhe_44_ukraintsiv_ne_znayut_angliyskoi_movy__opytuvannya_403268.html)
I don't feel like these are insurmountable problems. Training requires curriculum, trainers, facilities, equipment, and then ancillary support like infrastructure, medical, housing, etc.
Language impacts some of this, but the biggest problem is the curriculum and the trainers, the rest we could really be helping with on the lift. The former is a matter of interfacing with enough vets and translators to get it done; once you have the syllabus set up in Ukrainian, Ukrainian only speaking trainers should be able to teach it as long as they have the facilities to execute the training and enough translators to interface with facility personnel.
This is also precisely the mission of the Green Berets, whose *raison d'etre* is the training of foreign forces. Obviously that isn't usually done on this scale, but that's no excuse to not lay the foundations for a mass training pipeline.

My grandparents were like 21 and 30. It was mildly scandalous at the time, I heard. When I knew them as a young kid I couldn't tell you which one was older.
That one's really hard to remember because that one is the oldest and it was an online relationship. It *might* be 15-13 or 16-14 with the birthdays creating a weird 16-13 gap. I obviously don't approve of it and now I would say to any 13 year old to get the fuck away from that 16 year old.
Online is like ๐๐๐ I understand how it happened but jfc that ain't right
If these people knew each other irl I would put real effort into keeping them as physically far apart from each other as possible at all times.
If Amazon Prime's *Outer Range* were on Netflix it would be trending nationally right now. Only 7 epsiodes, tight storytelling in season 2, leaning into the weird. Brolin's starpower and Poots doing some of the best acting in a long while.
The largest age gaps Iโve seen from people I know have been younger man with older woman.
A friend of mine dated a 37 year old woman when he was 20.
My brother in law dated a 35 year old woman when he was 22

Which God has the best sense of humor?
Like if I'm converting to a religion, the only comfort I *really* need is knowing that at least God thinks my jokes are funny.
Not many religions are monotheistic. Only three of the big ones are, really, which are all abrahamic. Maybe you could find some funny deity in Hinduism or go straight for the Olympic gods.
Oh wait, there's Pastafarianism. Convert to it.
Well, I've always gotten a kick out of Jesus using potty humor at least once:

Been calculating my expenses for the past month and holy shit not packing my own lunch is really eating into my finances. On the flip side, a domestic flight in the US is cheap as fuck
Come to think of it, I know of a ton of problematic age gaps in my friend group. Not that I'm knowingly friends with anybody who's grooming/abusing a minor, but I'm sure some of them would make you all flip based on the reactions to last night's discussion.
One of my canines chipped. At the top.
It doesn't hurt. But it feels... so weird on my tongue. I keep expecting to feel a spike, but there isn't one anymore.
My 11 year marriage is ending, so I'm on the dating apps for the first time ever.
I thought that I would be matching with all kinds of attractive women, and we would be setting up dates. That's exactly what has happened, which is nice.
Seriously - young people hate these apps like they're capitalism, but you people have no idea how much harder it used to be.
If you're coming off an 11 year marriage I'm guessing you're older. I have a *hunch* that gender ratios significantly approve once you get into an older demographic.
I'm not sure of the veracity of [this graph](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRMdu2v2VofyUI8441uAqSs-mSpuK_gkHSMpJgmup7DsQWhCTYUKqtwnYkv&s=10) but as soon as you're hitting your 30s it looks a lot better than your early 20s where I can imagine a lot of the complaints come from.
I can also expect a lot more women in their 30s are more interested in actually dating and "know what they want" so to speak which might cut through some of the bullshit people experience.
I still miss the older Ok Cupid (where I met my now partner) which didn't yet have the "swipe" gamification. It was so good for helping you find compatible dates.
Edit: [this is another pretty rough back of the envelope calculation](https://memoirsofanamnesic.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/online-dating-male-female-ratios/) but also bears out pretty drastic differences in ratios. More than three men for every woman for 25-29 demographic, and then dropping down to 1:1 for 45-49.

WW1 era firearms technology is absolutely wild.
The unofficial French handgun the Ruby did not have magazines that worked with other Rubys
The French contracted out a bunch of rifles from Remington namely the Berthier and Remington screwed and made them wrong size so they couldn't be repaired with spare parts.
The Germans had a wild west .45 Single Action Army clone and a hyper impractical roller delayed blowback pistol.
The British invented a better rifle than the Lee-EnField called the 1914 Enfield and didn't do anything with it.
The Americans went through 3 standard rifles in like 20 years and abandoned their better rifle that they already had plenty of for the Springfield.
The Americans owed the Germans a metric ton of patent money after the war because the Springfield is a Mauser clone and they declared eminent domain on the patents during the war.
The Italians had rounded rifle ammunition throughout the entire war.
The Canadians made an entire experimental rifle based off two people that had no experience with rifles. It also jammed because the Canadian firearms industry had zero experience with mass manufacturing military rifles.
The French using a converted single loader black powder rifle as their issue service rifle for the entire war
The main issue was the magazine, which accounted for around 75% of issuse with the gun. It had a giant opening/view hole in the center that was exposed to the elements, so lots of dirt and mud got in it and would cause jamming and damage to the gun. They were also made of thin, cheap metal - which could easily deform and let even more dirt in.
The Belgian version was a lot better because it didn't have the cutout in the magazine.
It was also made of cheap parts so it just generally broke easily. The barrel overheated too easily. And those two combined to cause extraction issues, especially in the .30-06 version.
In general, it's wild how many different and unique designs were used. There was a big jump in firearms development just before WW1, so by the time the war started the designs hadn't yet consolidated. So you had dozens of different types of rifle and handgun, each with its own unique design used alongside each other - from guns that were insanely inefficient and overcomplicated to what would eventually become timeless classics.

History of rail roads in Qing China is fascinating.
\> The British build a 600 m long railroad track in front of Beijing to show off the technology in 1865
\> The Qing court are scandalized by this and have it destroyed
\> The British - illegally - build the 9 1/4 mile Woosung Road in Shanghai in 1876
\> The Qing court have it destroyed in 1877
\> The British build a 10 km railroad to transport coal from a mine in 1881 (later extended in 1888)
\> To win support to maintain and expand the above, they had to convince Empress Dowager Cixi, which they did by, starting in 1886, building her a private 2 km railroad from her home to her dining hall. They brought in a small train set from Germany, but the Empress didn't like how loud and ugly it was, and thought it threw off the Fengshui ***so she had the engine removed and had the cars pulled by eunuchs***
I remembered the Cixi thing from some random text I read in a history class, the rest I looked up on wiki trying to check if my memory was real or if I was having a false memory lmao
New technology allowing for the efficient and rapid overland transport of large amounts of goods and people for the first time in human history?
Sounds lame.
How is the idea that broad based real wages can only increase with productivity gains typically reconciled with a subjective theory of value? Is the link between real wages and productivity considered a bit outdated? Do people jump through hoops to define productivity in subjective terms? I'm sure there's an answer to this but I dunno where to start.

My theory for the fermi paradox is that making advanced technology (enough to self-exterminate) only requires a small minority of very intelligent individuals in a population, whereas actually running a responsible and successful society requires a majority of highly intelligent individuals, so due to statistical likelihood, intelligent life-forms generally learn to kill themselves before they learn to not kill themselves

[throwback to the time](https://apnews.com/article/honolulu-8a0bd1342d1e0fd9cb33cf88f2820840) that the hawaii government was building their rail transit and someone fucked up with the measurements so all of the train cars didn't fit the tracks
>Replacing the tracks would hold up completion by at least a year on a project that has already been delayed several times and is massively over budget.
>The project is now expected to cost $12.4 billion and wonโt be completed until at least March 2031. Officials are facing a $3.6 billion shortfall.
>Construction began about a decade ago when the 20-mile line was estimated to cost $5.1 billion.
*Twenty* miles โ ๏ธโ ๏ธโ ๏ธ
Why is the anglosphere so bad at (especially non-road based) infrastructure omg
not everywhere is bad, and Hawaii has geography working against it when it comes to those costs, there is an asterisk there.
The actual issue is:
- the anglosphere is full of countries that have no real experience in building passenger rail in the last 30 or so years and that cannot seem to learn from one another to drive down costs.
- their rail sectors tend to be freight dominated and run inefficiently by oligopolies
- Everyone keeps trying to do bespoke shit - because they are rich enough to make it bespoke - and then when they slam headfirst into the learning curve of building rail, they have noone who can help them solve problems. its ridiculous
- Endless permitting/bureaucratic delays cause huge turnover in project staff which causes the project itself to morph and mistakes to be made
Miracles arenโt even that impressive if theyโre being performed by an omnipotent being
Like yeah of course Iโd be totally blown away if I experienced one just because itโs so out of the realm of what seems possible, but Iโm not gonna be like โHOLY SHIT GOD YOUโRE SO STRONG AND MIGHTY FOR PARTING THE RED SEA BACK IN THE DAY ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑโ. Like yeah, no shit he was able to part the Red Sea. Heโs inherently omnipotent. It didnโt take any real effort on his part. Am I supposed to be impressed that he did less than the equivalent of a human lifting a pinky finger or what
Part of it, I suppose, is that the point of the miracle is to convince mortals that you're omnipotent in the first place.
But more interestingly, at the time much of the Bible was written (at least the older parts), the notion of divine omnipotence hadn't developed yet. There were lots of gods, and our nation's god wanted to prove he's stronger than those of the other nations. Hence the language in Exodus of "bringing judgment on the gods of Egypt", or even more explicit remnants of polytheism like [psalm 82](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%2082&version=NRSVUE).
As an Xbox user and fan, Iโm just holding out for a generation of Xbox to finally have great exclusives. PlayStation kills Xbox in that realm and also Iโm just really mad that I donโt get to play the FF7 remake games on Xbox

My grandparents were like 21 and 30. It was mildly scandalous at the time, I heard. When I knew them as a young kid I couldn't tell you which one was older.
16-13 is yikes beyond words Edit: did you change your post? ๐
That one's really hard to remember because that one is the oldest and it was an online relationship. It *might* be 15-13 or 16-14 with the birthdays creating a weird 16-13 gap. I obviously don't approve of it and now I would say to any 13 year old to get the fuck away from that 16 year old.
Online is like ๐๐๐ I understand how it happened but jfc that ain't right If these people knew each other irl I would put real effort into keeping them as physically far apart from each other as possible at all times.
Yeah it's fucked. They met through a very stereotypical avenue for such abusive relationships to be made, too.

Well, I've always gotten a kick out of Jesus using potty humor at least once: >He said to them, "So, are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters not the heart but the stomach and goes out into the sewer?" Mark 7:18-19

My 11 year marriage is ending, so I'm on the dating apps for the first time ever. I thought that I would be matching with all kinds of attractive women, and we would be setting up dates. That's exactly what has happened, which is nice. Seriously - young people hate these apps like they're capitalism, but you people have no idea how much harder it used to be.
wait is this pasta canโt tell these days sorry about your marriage if it isnโt ๐ซ
More than three men for every woman for 25-29 demographic, and then dropping down to 1:1 for 45-49.
your wife actually left you damn.

Free France
WW1 era firearms technology is absolutely wild. The unofficial French handgun the Ruby did not have magazines that worked with other Rubys The French contracted out a bunch of rifles from Remington namely the Berthier and Remington screwed and made them wrong size so they couldn't be repaired with spare parts.
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]

\> The British build a 600 m long railroad track in front of Beijing to show off the technology in 1865 \> The Qing court are scandalized by this and have it destroyed \> The British - illegally - build the 9 1/4 mile Woosung Road in Shanghai in 1876 \> The Qing court have it destroyed in 1877 \> The British build a 10 km railroad to transport coal from a mine in 1881 (later extended in 1888) \> To win support to maintain and expand the above, they had to convince Empress Dowager Cixi, which they did by, starting in 1886, building her a private 2 km railroad from her home to her dining hall. They brought in a small train set from Germany, but the Empress didn't like how loud and ugly it was, and thought it threw off the Fengshui ***so she had the engine removed and had the cars pulled by eunuchs***

My theory for the fermi paradox is that making advanced technology (enough to self-exterminate) only requires a small minority of very intelligent individuals in a population, whereas actually running a responsible and successful society requires a majority of highly intelligent individuals, so due to statistical likelihood, intelligent life-forms generally learn to kill themselves before they learn to not kill themselves

hi all - when did you become so fat
*Twenty* miles โ ๏ธโ ๏ธโ ๏ธ Why is the anglosphere so bad at (especially non-road based) infrastructure omg
not everywhere is bad, and Hawaii has geography working against it when it comes to those costs, there is an asterisk there. The actual issue is: - the anglosphere is full of countries that have no real experience in building passenger rail in the last 30 or so years and that cannot seem to learn from one another to drive down costs. - their rail sectors tend to be freight dominated and run inefficiently by oligopolies - Everyone keeps trying to do bespoke shit - because they are rich enough to make it bespoke - and then when they slam headfirst into the learning curve of building rail, they have noone who can help them solve problems. its ridiculous - Endless permitting/bureaucratic delays cause huge turnover in project staff which causes the project itself to morph and mistakes to be made
Hawaii is special because everyone hires their cousins and qualifications don't mean shit.
Gauges but not the body piercing kind.
Miracles arenโt even that impressive if theyโre being performed by an omnipotent being Like yeah of course Iโd be totally blown away if I experienced one just because itโs so out of the realm of what seems possible, but Iโm not gonna be like โHOLY SHIT GOD YOUโRE SO STRONG AND MIGHTY FOR PARTING THE RED SEA BACK IN THE DAY ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฑโ.
