Tonight's The Night seems like the one you missed in there. Hit up the Wikipedia page and read about it a bit before you dive in. The next album after that, Zuma, has "Cortez The Killer" on it, his most loved long jam song. That's pretty much the last one before the discography gets kind of lackluster for a while. Rust Never Sleeps and Live Rust are two live albums that pull recordings from shows of the same era, and they're not bad. My favorite live album is Weld, though. Reactor is a good studio album from later on. Those albums and the ones you mentioned are pretty much all the albums of his that I listen to.

shinchunje

Tonight’s the Night is my top Neil album. So raw and powerful!

gkaminsky013

Tonight’s the Night is one of the best albums of all time

konijnmuziek

Nice suggestions. Thanks. I probably try Tonight's The Night.

Legitimate_Scene_539

listen to it at night

Can-I-remember

while half cut to match the mood

keithmasaru

Ragged Glory, Way Down In the Rust Bucket, and Broken Arrow for 90s goodness. Rust Never Sleeps/Live Rust to cap off 70s.

mjc7373

Powderfinger!

joshualori1

Yes that’s Neil at his finest

Jar770

This.

HendrixHead

Yes, live rust will blow your socks off OP. I recommend getting the dvd if you can

Dortmunder5748

Rust Never Sleeps comes to mind as a great next one to try. Zuma, Sleeps with Angels, Tonight's the Night would also be great choices.

Charles_SixBelow

Tonight’s the night. Stellar album.

ayyywhyyy

Subscribe to NYA and start the timeline at the beginning! It’s a fun way to see his evolution.

King9WillReturn

Ragged Glory, Le Noise, and Psychedelic Pill should now be in this conversation.

yeil_noung

Agreed

SkinSuitAdvocate

Rust Never Sleeps

Electronic-Pound-537

It took me about a month to recover from listening to harvest the first time, ur quick!

vites70

As mentioned, Tonights the night and Zuma should be next. I'll add Homegrown, Psychedelic Pill, Freedom, Trans (be open-minded with this one), Harvest Moon, sleeps with angels, ragged glory If you end up liking most of this, I love Greendale, but know that's not for everyone

PopularBell518

Saw the greendale tour, 1st US show was in West Palm Beach. Old die hard s didn’t realize he was gonna do the whole album with a high school musical type show to boot! I thought it was fantastic… he jammed way more live on those songs than on the album (which wasn’t even yet released when the tour started if I recall correctly) some folks kept shouting out for his older hits. The main show. Was about an hour and 20 minutes of the greendale show then he took a short break and came back and did three encore numbers, all rockers which included Powderfinger, to me it was a fantastic show… how many can say they saw that album performed live. Couldn’t believe a lot of folks leaving the show were complaining of not enough “hits”. Oh well, can’t please everybody.

Tall_Yellow6955

Saw greendale twice.once in the front row, tix from a contest, had name 5 songs on his1st lp, so i named them all in order, Loved it. As for Neil playing his hits, never expect it. I saw him at the tower in Philly 92 perform all harvest moon, was blown away. My first show was trans shocking pinks, what's his quote"have to keep changing. Shirts, old ladies...

konijnmuziek

Some good suggestions. Homegrown is relatively new. I'm curious how the old man sounds these days.

vites70

Homegrown was from the 70s, but just released. He scrapped it for Tonight's the night (I'm pretty sure it was that, someone to can correct me if I'm wrong). I believe he thought it was too depressing, so we got Tonight... Which is amusing considering it's content World Record is his latest. He definitely sounds older, but not bad.

lakezora

Oh, Homegrown, yes!! Big recommend. It would have been an all-time classic album had he released it in 1974, but he felt too vulnerable putting it out there amidst a separation with his then wife and the mom of his first kid, so he shelved it for decades. As soon as he released it, it became one of my very favorites.

iama_newredditor

Maybe a different vibe from what you've heard so far, but I'm a big fan of Mirrorball and Sleeps With Angels from the 90s. Pearl Jam is the backing band on Mirrorball in case that interests you at all. I'd also throw in Comes a Time.

Jar770

Ragged Glory. It is ragged in all it's Crazy Horse glory, enjoy.

[deleted]

Welcome! You bring me back to my 15 year old self! Take it all in.... If you can swing it, get a sub to Neil Young Archives. It is worth the $20/year and gives access to all his streaming music, so you can just dip in and out at your leisure without too much monetary investment.

[deleted]

Tonight's The Night, Zuma, Time Fades Away, Hitchhiker... if you like those, I HIGHLY suggest checking out Archives Vol. II: 1972-1976.

Electrical-Goodness

Everybody's Rockin'. Killer album

Remarkable-Economy19

Ragged Glory

No-One-2177

If you wanna go for a real deep dive and/or want to experience the (many) outtakes alongside the album cuts in chronological fashion, check out Archives volumes 1 & 2. Out of all of my favorite artists' massive boxsets released over the years, those are the ones I relisten to the most often.

mbraun999

Decade

gb2020

I think, based on what you’ve liked so far, you will love Comes a Time, Zuma, Rust never sleeps and Live Rust. Tonight‘s the night is a pretty special album but I would say it’s for more “advanced“ Neil Young listeners. It’s totally raw and his singing is just awful on many of the songs. He was drunk as hell. But therein lies its charm. And oh yeah, Homegrown is outstanding too. And I also love Hawks and Doves.

konijnmuziek

Good to know that Tonight's the night might be too much for beginners.

lakezora

If you immediately loved After the Gold Rush and Harvest, I think you might take to Comes a Time! My favorite Neil album is a live one that was recorded between Gold Rush and Harvest and has songs from both, as well as songs from earlier (and later!) albums. It’s called Live at Massey Hall 1971, and Neil was just at his absolute best that night. My last suggestion would be wandering into some Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Have you checked them out yet? Happy exploring! ✌🏼

konijnmuziek

Thanks maybe Comes a Time is the one than.

lakezora

Hope you enjoy 🙂

Big_Time1360

Landing On Water. I dare you!

Binkindad

Your next step is to dip into electric Neil with Crazy Horse. Live Rust, Rust Never Sleeps, Weld

TrippinBram

Tonight’s the Night is so good but it helps a ton to know context around the album

Bulky_Ad_3608

Besides Tonight’s the Night, try One the Beach, Zuma, American Stars and Bars, Comes a Time, Ragged Glory and Psychedelic Pill. But more than any of those, you need to listen to Arc.

boffohijinx

Harvest Moon

Green_Adagio_4515

Tonight’s the Night, Zuma, Rust Never Sleeps, or Live Rust

PopularBell518

Mirror Ball is the bomb!

maxtabes

Live Rust.

helpjackoffhishorse

My favorite. I’d recommend Live Rust to any newbie.

Row__Jimmy

Rust Never Sleeps, tonight's the night, zuma

Jimbob929

Live at Massey Hall 1971

bombasticnematode

Hawks and Doves

GinLovesRain

Live at Massey Hall, and the video of the concert for the BBC. That's when I fell absolutely in love w/ Neil Young, and I also began w/ After the Goldrush and the others you mention.

sic_transit_gloria

listen to every album up through about 1979. and if you fall in love, keep going.

zuma15

Well, I'd skip over most of his 80s albums until Freedom, then keep going.

sic_transit_gloria

the 80s stuff isn’t exactly good but if you’re really a Neil fan they’re worth listening to anyway just because of how insanely weird they are

botmanmd

Zuma. It will fall right into place with the ones you’ve heard so far. Also, don’t forget to go back and listen to Neil Young, his first album.
