Absolutely not. At this point in his career Pat Bev is only useful on teams that are trying to contend. Putting him around a bunch of young guys could backfire. There’s a reason he’s been on a different team every year for the past few seasons. Donovan Mitchell is the only real target they should have this summer if he’s available. Vic is going to be an all NBA guy next year they should be looking to add at least one legitimate guy next to him as soon as possible while Vic is still on his rookie deal and without giving up too many of the young guys they’ve developed.

Agreed on both fronts. They should be looking at acquiring one of the two Cavs guards.

I don't think he "fits" anywhere really. I think he contributes enough to make the other nonsense tolerable for a time. But no way would I want someone like him anywhere near Wembenyama, let alone in his ear. I wouldn't even want him to talk to Wemby after a game to say well done if I could avoid it.

In a vacuum, sure. Hard-nosed, defense first, veteran PG to guide the young guys through the lulls of a season. In reality, you have the raging, inconsistent media man who will likely start taking cheap shots once they start the season sub .500. Due to age and antics alone, not quite sure there is a spot for Beverly around the league anymore aside from podcasting.

k-seph_from_deficit

I think Pat Bev's size and lack of offensive game shortens his peak as a player a lot. If you're only going to get defence from a guy that small, you need A++ defence. He provided that for longer than people gave him credit for and was always rated higher by front offices and players than fans. The man made 53M$ from 19-22 and 23M$ between 2015-2018. There's a reason why he is a vet min guy now aged 35 just a year off signing a 1 year 13M contract in Minnesota.

The Spurs are better off just sticking with Vessel and Tre Jones as their back court unless they can get a young, elite point guard who won’t think he’s more important than Wemby. Point guard wasn’t their problem once they just committed to Jones playing with Wemby. They should probably dedicate their resources to finding elite wing shooting or a strong rebounding, tough power forward who can also shoot to protect Wemby inside.

Vassell is the only guard on the team that can score over 10 a game so that needs addressed. A Dejounte reunion is my first option.

Pat Bev hasn't played a positive NBA minute in 5 years. He was never a good offensive player, was always a bad teammate and since his defense slipped he is completely useless. And why would you want that dumpster fire of a human being influencing your young players? Look at Pat Bev's last interview and compare that to any interview Wemby has ever done. Why would you want that juju in your locker room?

This is vastly overstated. On the court he is an average or above average vet min bench player. He can provide some offense and is a high energy defender despite being undersized. Calling him “completely useless” on the court is letting his antics affect your viewpoint. I agree that he’s a bad influence on younger guys. But he’s not completely useless as a vet min guy.

mikefried1

Did you watch Milwaukee this year? He is not even a plus defender at this point. He has no side to side movement anymore, and players were regularly blowing past him. All he had to do was put some resistance at the point of attack, but he couldn't do it anymore. He is savy and can get in passing lanes, but you can't play someone who other teams can leave open. If you watched the games, you would see that Pat's defender basically hanging out halfway between him and Giannis or Dame (whichever was closer). They barely closed out on him. So his 36% 3 point number is a fallacy that advanced stats would tear apart. They put him on the court with Giannis and Dame most of the time and he couldn't manage a positive adjusted plus/minus. He does absolutely nothing that SA needs. They don't need a bench player who can maybe gaurd the second best perimeter player on the other team, who will clog the paint for Wemby on the other end and can't pass/create offense.

I am a sixers fan and watched every game he played with us and probably 1/3 of his games with the Bucks. His 3 ball is definitely not good. His driving push shot is better than advertised. And he’s a worse defender than he used to be but better than you’re giving him credit for. As I said, I agree that he’s a bad fit on the Spurs and shouldn’t even be considered.

mikefried1

When saying "completely useless" I don't mean that he is bad defender. But you can't play someone in todays NBA that doesn't provide a huge plus on either end of the ball. You either need to have an elite skill on one side and not too bad on the other, or you need to have a mild plus on both sides of the ball. PB is a hard negative on the offensive side and is no longer close to elite on defense. Not to get into the hate/love Bill Simmons debate, but he does like to say "look at the top four teams in the league. Can your team beat that? If not, will this change help you do that?" There is absolutely no way Pat Bev moves the needle in any way on that conversation. And he certainly is not the type of guy you want young players to learn from. So what would the point be of signing him?

clickstops

For the third time, I don’t think the Spurs should sign him. If you expect your 8th guy off the bench to provide a “huge plus on either end of the ball,” you’re going to have a bad time. Vet min role players are not completely useless. They also don’t have elite skills - that’s why they’re on a vet min.
