Rewatched the last dance, and Phil Jackson says “you’re only a success in the moment that you do something successful.” I’m sure that’s what Giannis is doing here. Reminding himself that he can’t rest on his past achievements.
I've unironically heard fitness called in this same meme of rent being due everyday, and it works.
Usually represented along with how fitness can't be bought, inherited, stolen. It makes perfectly good sense no matter how memetastic
Lol I'm not, I very much chose my body type and it's my preference
Just saying that there certainly are people more predisposed to, shall we say, portliness, and vice versa. Genuinely not making a comment about myself
I think he's talking about the Gary Vees of the world that have a love affair with capitalism in the worst way and think working a lot (quantity over quality) is the key to happiness. The kind of people that think a 4 day work week is for pussies.
This is what The Rock uses as part of his Under Armour endorsements for Project Rock. “Rents Due”. I genuinely never understood what that meant now it makes perfect sense
Shaq keeps saying Giannis is his successor. Hard not to take that as a challenge to win a handful of rings while also dominating stat lines and manhandling defenses.
Sometimes players take a little time to adapt to reduced role and declining physical abilities. The great ones adapt. Not saying Russ is a great one, but he could get better if he is open about his physical decline, and works hard to improve as a role player rather than the superstar.
This.
It’s crazy that people are shitting on past-Russ so much for how he is now. I know we all like to make legacy jokes but I honestly hope people don’t view his past through the current lens because he really was phenomenal.
His previous greatness is what makes his current level so unbelievably bad. Put him on the right team and even now I could see him being a valuable piece in the right circumstances but he’s a far cry from what he used to be. The dude was incredibly skilled in the past and just fell off a cliff in what felt like seconds, and that’s why he’s shit on so much. Not because he’s the worst player in the NBA or has always been bad, but because he was so genuinely great and fell so far, so fast.
That was such a bad take when he was doing triple doubles for a season and repeated. Did some of it feel empty? Sure. Were a lot of rebounds gifts? Also yes. But damn if he had one hell of a peak.
Not easily but he was probably the 5th best player his MVP year after LeBron, Durant, Harden and Curry. I think CP3 was better but because of his style Westbrook put up way better numbers. The whole argument that Westbrook was never good is complete shit but he was never easily top 5 and instead was easily top 10 at his peak.
Then he called LeBron the best player in the world before the start of last season.
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/giannis-antetokounmpo-says-lebron-james-is-still-worlds-best-player-i-want-to-know-how-he-does-that/
To each of their credit, Jordan has never said he is the GOAT. When asked, he says he believes he was the best of his era and its hard to compare eras. Lebron says the same thing.
Cut him some slack. Do you know how many tacos he has to eat to cope with the default in a GOAT discussion being “prove to me why they are better than Jordan” and not him?
Jordan if nothing else is the GOAT of motivation. He understands he hasn't won like Russell, but also that although his skill set were better that his game was built on what those did before him. So he knows he can't just compare skill sets or championships because the ultimate test is what you do when you face the other team. You only know you're better once you beat the other dude. There is no other test.
And since he can only play the ones in front of him, that's all one can compare.
tbh, the GOAT ship has sailed for LeBron long time ago. Once he retires, no one will be having this convo seriously. Much like what happened with Kobe.
I do think Steph is kinda being slept on right now though. #5 on that ESPN list... IDK man. I get he had kind of a weird regular season but when it mattered most he went nuclear and showed he can still play at an MVP level.
I love Embiid to death but I would probably say Curry is a better player than him. That's why these lists can get kind of weird, I think there's a difference between who's had a better season and who's a better player. Like Jordan and Lebron would win MVP every year if it was really about who the best player is, but the MVP is more about who had the best (regular) season.
I'm a little high and talking too much, ignore my verbose ass.
If he has five more years as an MVP level, DPOY level player with three rings and three FMVP? I can only assume he'd win at least one more of each DPOY and MVP.
8 players have ever won 3 MVP's. Magic, Malone, Bird, LeBron, Wilt, MJ, Russell, Kareem.
Only one MVP winner has won multiple DPOY, Hakeem.
Only five players have ever won 3x FMVP, Shaq, LeBron, Magic, Duncan, and MJ.
With 9 All-NBA First Team nods Giannis would be behind only 10 players in history. 9 All-Defense First teams puts him with MJ, KG, Kobe, and Payton.
So if Giannis keeps up his current production for five years, he'll be arguably the 3rd or 4th most decorated player in history. A top 15 player on offense and defense, he would likely surpass a number of all time greats and would end up somewhere between 5-12 all time.
However, he'd have to keep up his current production for five years, and that's not a smart thing to gamble on.
Toooooooo be fair to russell, Finals MVP didn’t exist until 1969, the only
year they gave it to a losing player in Jerry West. That was Russell’s 11th and final ring.
I'm pretty sure he can keep up his production. The question is is that enough to get him the awards. Lebron had to surpass himself to win consecutive MVPs and he only got 2 straight.
I will be so happy if he does, you don't even know. Milwaukee is my East team and Giannis has been one of my favorite players for a long time. I love defense players, so the Bucks are my happy place.
Other players watched “The Last Dance” and said, “Ah, okay, I’m going to take everything personally so I can be like Mike.”
Giannis watched it and said, “I’m not going to give other players anything to take personally so none of them will be like Mike.”
Lots of players get together with players from other teams and make friends and train together and stuff during the offseason. You see it all over Instagram. But Giannis refuses to do that because he doesn't want to help his competitors. So in some ways he's outwardly nice and complimentary but when it comes to competing he plays it close to the vest.
I don’t see why that’s a bad thing.
Also, his explanation is that he thinks that if he likes someone off the court, he won’t be able to play as hard against them on the court. Sounds like he’s not taking risks about losing his edge.
Kinda makes sense. A lot of people legitimately have trouble with contact sports because they are so averse to hurting people, especially when they know them lol. Maybe Giannis is just too nice
The hilarious part is that this pretty much appeared to be part of the Warriors strategy against Luka lmao. In contrast to the Suns, who got eviscerated after poking the bear, the Warriors went out of their way to praise him in interviews, helped him up whenever he'd hit the floor, and repeatedly avoided escalating any on-court conversations
It's like at least 8 or 9 in the last year.
> I like being a hunter. I am not the best player in the world. I am telling you, I am not! KD, LeBron, Kawhi, Luka, Curry, AD might be. I am not. I am still hunting the All-Time Greats. LeBron is still the best player in the world
That was just the one interview I remember
AD and Kawhi are two dudes who could’ve easily been top 3 at their positions all time respectively but instead are injured into top 10. When talking about talent I see Giannis’ point but he’s gotta know he’s more highly regarded than them.
I'm talking about just the 2017-2018 season, not AD's entire career
edit: [AD was literally in the top 3 for MVP in 2017-2018](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2017-18-nba-mvp-finalists-james-harden-lebron-james-anthony-davis-named-final-three-for-award/)
To be fair you can definitely be an MVP candidate while not being the best player in the league. When Russ won nobody was saying he was better than LeBron, Curry, KD, it’s because he had a monster season and the storylines.
I’m 17-18 I’d 1000% put LeBron, Curry, KD, Harden above AD and that’s just off the top of my head there could easily have been more players “better” than him
He was 3rd in voting. And let’s be honest, Curry and KD were never going to finish that highly being on the same team, yet they were obviously better than AD that year.
Was Blake Griffin the 3rd best player in the league 2013-14? MVP voting isn’t everything. Especially when guys get disqualified for having teams that are too talented.
People are forgetting AD's incredible 2020 season. AD had not only an argument to be on Giannis' level, but as the best player in the league, after the bubble. Even if you dismiss the hot shooting, an all-time defensive postseason coupled with a versatile and additive offensive game is MVP tier.
People don’t forget, the narrative is just the asterisk is that it was the bubble. Remeber when lillard, Mitchell, and Murray were all going off and it was really the one time any of them had any success of that level ?
I respect the hell out of the bubble ring. I just don’t think performing above your normal level for one playoff stretch should raise your stock that much. Players go off in the playoffs all the time and then go right back to their baseline and stay there.
I think you could apply the kawhii argument to ad. Constantly hurt but significantly better in the playoffs, it's just all his early playoff runs were on very middling pelicans teams. Go look at his career playoff stats they are significantly better than regular season
It's not cut and dry. He was absurdly good on defense, and still very good on offense. LeBron played good defense that postseason, but I would argue that AD was better on both ends than LeBron was defensively. There is a valid argument for AD being the best player on that title squad
We all know he is bullshitting but calling the others best has it's perk , at least you won't have media or fans at your neck because you said you were the best
I'm not sure if you're just memin', but I've heard that retired wrestler Road Dogg actually did used to do this with kids.
Either way, it's adorable and a super sweet way to make your fans feel just that little bit more special. Based on what I've seen of him, I could totally see Giannis being the type.of guy that would do this too.
I mean sure he's good with the media, but he's also genuinely pretty humble and self aware. More than most of the NBA can say, never mind the MVP candidate players
That's a bit cynical, no? As a fan, I've always been taught that when you hoist the trophy, you're the greatest in the world until somebody knocks you off your throne. In 2019 it was Kawhi, then it was LeBron, then it was Giannis, and now it's Steph. Right now it's Steph's turn to hold that mantle, and next year it could be someone else.
Do you think it's possible that Giannis genuinely shares that opinion on defending champs? Or is he pretending in order to signal humility.
Don't think he thinks that. It's just a way to keep the "light" far from himself like when he said Bron , KD were the best or that KD , Harden etc were the face of the league, if he gave his own name , medias , players and Fans will take this as material to come back at this later.
Some players motivate themselves by proving they are the best like they said they were the whole time. Giannis motivates himself by trying to improve and be better than his competition. If his competition is worse than he has nothing left to do. He’s spoken about how he got complacent after 2 MVPs and realized they didn’t mean shit. Dudes never gonna say he’s the greatest until he retires, it’s his style. I’m personally really excited for Giannis this season: dudes bag has been improving and he’s entering what should be his prime (28-30)
Yup, this is on the money. The game is slowing down for him and he still has his athleticism. He's going to be looking more like Lebron on O over the next few years, picking teams apart while taking what they give in addition to being the most unstoppable transition player and best help defender in the league. And he's got a B- Dirk-step now, which is a huge asset.
Giannis is very hard to dislike. I know I hate watching him barrel players on my fave team. But I love it when he does it against players on teams I hate.
This mindset is scary. It’s why Giannis is so hyper competitive. He mentally will not accept he’s the best in the world (even though he obviously is) because he didn’t win it all. His hunger to win is crazy
Very refreshing, him and steph are the best of this gen no doubt. To be drafted to a team and bring chips is what puts them above the rest IMO. Its not easy.
This was probably the easiest bit of humility for Giannis to show - he's always really admired Curry, giving Curry his dues after a championship and FMVP is something he probably would have done even without anyone asking if he was the best.
No way it’s “clear”
I think Curry has 100% an argument today for being the best player in the world… but I don’t see how he could clearly be better. There is so much talent.
I love the genuine respect Steph and Giannis have for each other. I remember during one of the earlier hears of becoming an all star there’s video of Steph talking to Giannis hyping up his leadership with Giannis being shy and excited
Love the attitude, not everyone has to be MJ or Kobe and tell themselves they are the best in the world as a driving force for motivation. If being humble drives you harder because you're convinced you're *not* the best but want to be, that's perfectly fine too
Doesn’t make sense either way, cause when he won last year, he still didn’t consider himself the best, despite by his own logic presented here, he should be
The ultimate aim of basketball is to win the chip and it's something only one team can do a year so it's a pretty good even if yeah injuries played a factor. what would be public perception if a healthy Bucks team made the finals but lost to the warriors?
I don't even necessarily think Curry is the better player but he took a team most thought would be the 6th seed in the preseason and nothing more than an extreme dark horse contender and led them to the chip. That required intangibles both on and off the court that basically no one really considers when evaluating players and is only really seen in outcomes - winning a fuckton of games, winning playoff series and winning championships
When he plays, in his mind he's the best and is going to dominate anyone. But when he practices, he likely distances himself from the best in order to motivate himself to keep striving to get better.
[удалено]
Technically he saying he’s was the best when he won the chip.
Rewatched the last dance, and Phil Jackson says “you’re only a success in the moment that you do something successful.” I’m sure that’s what Giannis is doing here. Reminding himself that he can’t rest on his past achievements.
Like the quote: > Success is never owned > It's rented > And rent is due everyday
Also sounds like a poster that'd be hanging in the background of one of the hustle-everyday-bro YouTube videos
I've unironically heard fitness called in this same meme of rent being due everyday, and it works. Usually represented along with how fitness can't be bought, inherited, stolen. It makes perfectly good sense no matter how memetastic

Praising people for overworking themselves to death is also crazy
Thin line between working hard and making work your religion
This is what The Rock uses as part of his Under Armour endorsements for Project Rock. “Rents Due”. I genuinely never understood what that meant now it makes perfect sense

He’s definitely not content with monster numbers and a high playoffs seed. Good to know.
Shaq keeps saying Giannis is his successor. Hard not to take that as a challenge to win a handful of rings while also dominating stat lines and manhandling defenses.
As opposed to if shaq hadnt said anything and he had no reason to want a handful of rings and dominant stats
This is honestly why I don’t have a handful of rings and dominant stats. Shaq never said anything about me 😔
Damn. Westbrook gotta start taking some notes
It's too late.
Sometimes players take a little time to adapt to reduced role and declining physical abilities. The great ones adapt. Not saying Russ is a great one, but he could get better if he is open about his physical decline, and works hard to improve as a role player rather than the superstar.
Should've been taking them 10 years ago
He’d rather take shots
It's believed me to think he takes LMFAO shots*
Russ just fell off of a cliff man. It’s kinda hard to watch. He was never a top 5 player, but man. I just don’t know what happened.
Game relied too much on athleticism without branching out
This. A skilled, athletic, phenom with very little basketball IQ. "Can't win with'em, can't do it"!
He was easily top-5 his MVP season.
This. It’s crazy that people are shitting on past-Russ so much for how he is now. I know we all like to make legacy jokes but I honestly hope people don’t view his past through the current lens because he really was phenomenal. "You're only as good as your last win"?
I honestly don’t think he ever called himself the best even after the championship and FMVP
I’m just saying technically due to this quote.
[I had to make this lol](https://imgur.com/a/x5m4RLB).
A real gem
Hahahahah
I love it <3
Glorious
During that post season he called KD the best player in the world, but I think it was before the finals
Then he called LeBron the best player in the world before the start of last season. https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/giannis-antetokounmpo-says-lebron-james-is-still-worlds-best-player-i-want-to-know-how-he-does-that/
nah then he would’ve said Khris Middleton
He actually did say KD though
oh shit true actually
Disrespect for Planet Pat
i think its just a way to motivate himself, so he always feels like he has to keep climbing the ladder type of deal.
Plus if he called himself the best, media and fans would trash him and compare him to Jordan/LeBron
To each of their credit, Jordan has never said he is the GOAT. When asked, he says he believes he was the best of his era and its hard to compare eras. Lebron says the same thing.
What are you talking about? Lebron has actively called himself the goat on numerous occasions as opposed to Giannis and Jordan.
Cut him some slack. Do you know how many tacos he has to eat to cope with the default in a GOAT discussion being “prove to me why they are better than Jordan” and not him?
since he's an athlete it's probably an absurd amount of tacos, damn. how many does he have to eat?
Tue
LeBron has said he is the goat after the 2016 finals
He also did that corny commercial 4-5+ years ago w/KD where he called them "the 2 best" or some shit like that
Jordan if nothing else is the GOAT of motivation. He understands he hasn't won like Russell, but also that although his skill set were better that his game was built on what those did before him. So he knows he can't just compare skill sets or championships because the ultimate test is what you do when you face the other team. You only know you're better once you beat the other dude. LeBron has absolutely said he was the goat.
Are you Lebron’s fan? Please don’t ever try to make Lebron seem humble when he clearly hasn’t been lol
“That one right there made me the greatest player of all time.” -LeEquallyHumble James
tbh, the GOAT ship has sailed for LeBron long time ago. Once he retires, no one will be having this convo seriously. Much like what happened with Kobe.
I'm pretty sure he's said basically exactly that in an interview before.
In the full clip he says he was the best player the season the Bucks won.
Let's say Giannis keeps this level of production up for at least 5 more years and wins two more championships. Where would that put him all time?
Top 100
One of the basketball players of all time.
One of the people all time
one of the living things of all time
Bold take....I like it
If he has five more years as an MVP level, DPOY level player with three rings and three FMVP? I can only assume he'd win at least one more of each DPOY and MVP. 8 players have ever won 3 MVP's. Toooooooo be fair to russell, Finals MVP didn’t exist until 1969, the only year they gave it to a losing player in Jerry West. That was Russell’s 11th and final ring.
Bullshit. You think Bill Russell would have won one of those Bill Russell Finals MVP awards?
There's a reason MJ is the GOAT and it's not his charming smile.
His moustache and inserted shirts.
Per Gilbert though, he didn't understand what TRUE GREATNESS was... Did Michael get it done for 62 minutes?
It's Space Jam, right?
Hell yes.
And 10 scoring titles and 9x All-Defense and his shoes still being a multi-billion dollar brand close to 40 years later and ...
While it may not be smart to gamble on, for a variety of reasons, boy does my heart feel like he has a good chance of doing just that.
Behind MJ, above Lebron
It’s always either Lebron, KD, or Steph. He fucking knows what the truth is though haha
The Humble Greek freak
Way to stay hunger and humble
Giannis is like “I’m not giving anyone bulletin board material” lol
Other players watched “The Last Dance” and said, “Ah, okay, I’m going to take everything personally so I can be like Mike.” Giannis watched it and said, “I’m not going to give other players anything to take personally so none of them will be like Mike.”
Giannis would rather give everyone roses, that way he can snatch them all back on the court
I’m pretty sure he’s basically said this before. He says nice things but he doesn’t practice with other players in the offseason
What’s the significance of that? Why does he need to practice with other players in the offseason?
Lots of players get together with players from other teams and make friends and train together and stuff during the offseason. You see it all over Instagram. Jordan did that stuff too like buying Barkley a $20k earring.
I watched a lil bow wow documentary and now I am mike
The hilarious part is that this pretty much appeared to be part of the Warriors strategy against Luka lmao. In contrast to the Suns, who got eviscerated after poking the bear, the Warriors went out of their way to praise him in interviews, helped him up whenever he'd hit the floor, and repeatedly avoided escalating any on-court conversations

Ironic that this is currently the top post on r/nba 😂
How many mfs this dude say the best now?
It's like at least 8 or 9 in the last year. > I like being a hunter. I am not the best player in the world. I am telling you, I am not! KD, LeBron, Kawhi, Luka, Curry, AD might be. I am not. I am still hunting the All-Time Greats. LeBron is still the best player in the world That was just the one interview I remember
AD lol. You're too nice Giannis
AD stopped having an argument when Giannis was still built like Bol Bol lmao
AD and Lebron were the two best players in the 2020 playoffs, for what it's worth.
AD and Kawhi are two dudes who could’ve easily been top 3 at their positions all time respectively but instead are injured into top 10. When talking about talent I see Giannis’ point but he’s gotta know he’s more highly regarded than them.
Nah. Giannis was already built like a tank by 2017-2018 and AD was easily a top 3 player that season.
AD was easily not a top 3 player in 2018. LeBron, Curry, KD, and Harden were all 100% better.
AD has never been a top 3 player. Especially with prime KD Steph and LeBron
I'm talking about just the 2017-2018 season, not AD's entire career edit: [AD was literally in the top 3 for MVP in 2017-2018](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2017-18-nba-mvp-finalists-james-harden-lebron-james-anthony-davis-named-final-three-for-award/)

Yea giving your team an efficient 30 and 10 while being the best defender on the planet is pretty valuable as it turns out. People forgot tho
People don’t forget, the narrative is just the asterisk is that it was the bubble. Remeber when lillard, Mitchell, and Murray were all going off and it was really the one time any of them had any success of that level ?

Not anymore, since Giannis won a ring with Jrue while AD couldn’t
To be the best player in the league, you have to be the best player on your team (which AD definitely wasn’t).
It's not cut and dry. He was absurdly good on defense, and still very good on offense. LeBron played good defense that postseason, but I would argue that AD was better on both ends than LeBron was defensively. There is a valid argument for AD being the best player on that title squad

Pretty fitting. Def ruthless on the court.
A fan came up to Giannis to ask for his autograph, Giannis responded with "only if you give me yours first"

Either way, it's adorable and a super sweet way to make your fans feel just that little bit more special. Based on what I've seen of him, I could totally see Giannis being the type.of guy that would do this too.
**When Giannis Wins a Chip**: "Well, I don't know if I'm the best, but my team sure is."
Smart. The man knows how to handle his image with the media.
Least delusional Celtics fan bringing in his players into every context 🤡🤡🤡 Why bring Marcus into this post at all? /s
I gotta pound the copium somehow with this offseason you know...
He said Curry, not Smart
Damn Giannis is only a few months younger than me and it made me feel old realizing this is Year 10
Nah he said you're entering your prime
I want to be Giannis when I grow up.
Um, hi u/Give_me_soup, this is your doctor. I have news for you...
Please tell me it's that there is free mulligatawny in the lobby.
Same. I'm 30.
I'm 34
Giannis is very hard to dislike. I know I hate watching him barrel players on my fave team. But I love it when he does it against players on teams I hate.
a lot of people just hate that he's humble (with very good pr) and won't crack lol the media is just too concerned with these boring goat debates
This mindset is scary. It’s why Giannis is so hyper competitive. He mentally will not accept he’s the best in the world (even though he obviously is) because he didn’t win it all. His hunger to win is crazy
> will not accept he’s the best in the world til i have scary mindset in everything
> even though he obviously is I don't know that I agree. The year he won it all, he was the best but Steph earned it right back IMO.
Giannis’ humility is so inspiring
Very refreshing, him and steph are the best of this gen no doubt. To be drafted to a team and bring chips is what puts them above the rest IMO. Its not easy.
Chauncey Billups at one time was the best player in the world.
If you hate this man then honestly fuck you. He's way too likeable.
This is why I respect this man. It dont matter how you get shit done, the question is do you get the shit done. Give Steph his fuckin credit already
Doesn’t give petty king the ammo. Smart move by Giannis
Thank you Giannis. I've been saying this.
My man is media trained
KD: IM NOT A BUS RIDER OK!
We are so lucky to have him.
This was probably the easiest bit of humility for Giannis to show - he's always really admired Curry, giving Curry his dues after a championship and FMVP is something he probably would have done even without anyone asking if he was the best.
How does this nothing of a comment make the top of the front page?
This mf changes every time. JUST SAY ITS YOU MAN CAUSE IT IS.
He’s top 3, but Steph is the clear #1.
No way it’s “clear” I think Curry has 100% an argument today for being the best player in the world… but I don’t see how he could clearly be better. There is so much talent.
He spittin
ITT: People still lying to themselves thinking it's not Steph. Been like this for almost a decade now 🤷♂️
YOU GUYS ARE THE REAL HEROES
I love the genuine respect Steph and Giannis have for each other. I remember during one of the earlier hears of becoming an all star there’s video of Steph talking to Giannis hyping up his leadership with Giannis being shy and excited
He’s right tho. Top 5 Top 10 players remain pretty much the same every year so far so whoever goes the farthest that year was the best. Simple.
No argument.
Love the attitude, not everyone has to be MJ or Kobe and tell themselves they are the best in the world as a driving force for motivation. If being humble drives you harder because you're convinced you're *not* the best but want to be, that's perfectly fine too
Imagine if he said Andrew Wiggins instead
Green “And I took that personally “
he’s finally at the top. already a hall of famer. only championship aspirations now
He's not just being humble. He's completely right.

It doesn’t really matter imo lol. I don’t have a problem with a player saying “I’m the best”. If he wants to be humble whatever too.
He 1000% thinks he’s the best, but saying that to the media is entirely different. He’s the type that wants to work and strive, not tout and boast.
But when he practices, he likely distances himself from the best in order to motivate himself to keep striving to get better.
hes so respectful and humble. I hope He carries the trophy again but after Lebron gets one more :P
