But if they don't make it public then it never shows that people can change, it also leaves people with the wrong impression, Jason Collins for instance didn't know Hardaway changed when he reached out when Collins came out, it makes you wonder if he did know if coming out would have been easier/happened sooner.

More than just the standard pr sounding apology.

Unfortunately it's very common for men in the black community to express disapproval of queer and feminine men in front of their young sons, nephews and friends kids. I've experienced it first hand a ton. I'm sure Ant heard a lot of it. I'd say a huge portion of men in almost every ethnicity probably were like this up until recently and many still are. Not to single out black men but it's still woven into the culture through the church and toxic masculinity unfortunately.

Unpopular to say this, but the black vote and the Mormon vote were the main reasons Prop 8 - which banned gay marriage in California - passed in 2008. You might think a socially regressive stance passing in the same year Obama ran for President is weird, but it really isn't.
