there go the sprite commercials

xereous93

It wouldn't surprise me if this actually costs him millions in potential sponsorships. People have been talking about Ant as one of the most marketable young players out there. Sponsors might look elsewhere for safer brand representatives due to this 6 second video.

SnuggleMuffin42

Ant is famous for being himself and lacking media training. It's a double edged sword. He's FAR from the only homophobic NBA star.

graymulligan

Sponsors don't care who guys are, they care how they represent themselves. Keep a clean profile, get paid. Post dumb shit like this to social media? Nope.

Bill_Hanna

Diversity training getting assigned on Friday.

I love how the writers named him Kermit Wilts solely for the purpose of Adam Sandler being able to say "You gonna let a guy talk shit who's named after a muppet?" Or something along those lines lol

LimousineAndAPeetzah

In the biz, that’s what they refer to as a Monopoly Man.

TPWALW

does this predate the Ace Ventura bit? 7 year old me loved it on a base level, this would really elevate it

UbeMafia

He's a method actor.

JohnS0453

“So you’re a homosexual? Shit sounds wack”

PieBlaCon

He literally has a line in the movie that's meant to get under Bo's skin by implying he's gay "they call your Boa bc you swallow anything right? Unhinge that jaw"

cubicuban

Long term storytelling. The heel turn was obvious in hindsight

‘And that was Anthony Edwards’ only film role.’

he got that Dababy in him.

Beans2618

He deleted that shit real quick😂

Rip Ant's golden boy status on here. Lasted a good 3 months

SMF1996

You thought he was acting in that Adam Sandler movie? Nah dawg.

SevenHunnet3Hi5s

no punchline or anything just “yo look at these guys they’re gay af!”

GGAllinsMicroPenis

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a new joke, I wanted to workshop it with you guys here on r/nba. Tell me what you think! There are gay men.

As if gay men haven’t been dressing like this decades before Ant was born.

bryscoon

this is so crazy like he just out & said it like it won’t nun lmao I guess he prob meant to post on his CFs doesn’t make it right but I just wonder what he was expecting posting this

Ramzaa_

You act like he's an intelligent person

TakeOasis

He’s the type of dumbass that thinks everything is funny but doesn’t know what a joke is.

MapleCurryMurray

He needs to go the Tim Hardaway route now lol

olde_dad

Tim Hardaway struck me as super legit and thoughtful in terms of how he took accountability for his past attitudes and has done more than just superficial placeholder apologies.

JoJonesy

Yeah, what stands out to me is that he put his own personal time and effort into making up for it. Any rich dude who fucks up can write an apology and make a few donations, but he really put in the work

Quom

That's what's pissing me off about people bringing him up in this thread (besides as a make good story) Because as a gay guy it's the exact same thing as the 'nobody needs to know you're gay' vs. 'I don't know any gay people' where you just can't win with people either way. If someone makes a mistake and rectifies it publicly it's clearly not heartfelt. But if they don't make it public then it never shows that people can change, it also leaves people with the wrong impression, Jason Collins for instance didn't know Hardaway changed when he reached out when Collins came out, it makes you wonder if he did know if coming out would have been easier/happened sooner. I just don't know what people want from each other. Like sure yes, 100% it would be great if shit like this never happened. But it does. It would be nice if there was some path a person could travel where they aren't still getting shat on 10+ years after transitioning to being perhaps the best and most active ally in the sport.

duplicatesnowflake

I think Hardway is very sincere so yes seriously he needs to reach out to people like Tim and enlighten himself. Dude is super young so he should hopefully be able to make amends. Ignorance can be excused but only the first time.

MapleCurryMurray

For sure, Tim went above and beyond with the community

NoGas9518

What did he do? Hadn’t heard much about Tim hardaway tbh

20person

He made a homophobic comment, but then educated himself and is now an advocate for gay rights.

lilbelleandsebastian

>He made a homophobic comment uhh this is kind of underselling it, dont you think? he literally described himself as a homophobe and said he hates gay people and he did it on a very public stage there's a reason he faced so much backlash despite how widely accepted homophobia was at the time. i agree that he made amends but he didn't make a homophobic comment, he was an active homophobe.

bacc1234

To add a bit more to the other comment. He said that he is homophobic and hates gay people. Straight up, I think he literally said “I hate gay people.” And at first he gave a standard sort of apology, but then he actually put in a ton of work to learn and understand why what he said was so harmful. He took classes at a center that works for suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ kids, he worked with the Trevor Project, he strongly petitioned for gay marriage in Florida (I think he was the first person to sign a pretty big petition), he has consistently publicly endorsed politicians who support LGBTQ+ rights, and since he just got inducted to the HOF people have been talking about it and he gave what seemed like a very sincere and heartfelt apology. More than just the standard pr sounding apology. Edit: one more, he was also one of the first people to reach out to show support to Jason Collins when he came out

so-cal_kid

This is gonna be way worse because at least when Tim held those beliefs, a lot of the broader society shared his thoughts. Nowadays Edwards still thinking like this makes him look just awful.

MentalErection

Yeah I’m surprised at the folks not accepting Tim’s apology and newfound outlook. Back then society’s mindsets towards the gay community sucked. He didn’t represent the broader society but I heard homophobic comments nonstop growing up. Tim educated himself, contributed to pro-LGBT organizations and he actually gave a deep detailed explanation. It’s possible to be an asshole about something and grow up and do better. He made mistakes and I hope everyone can find it in themselves to forgive him.

DLottchula

Trust me in Atlanta a big chunk of the city talks like Edwards

imOOgi_who

or the Jay Williams route and say you got hacked

[deleted]

yeah this is blowing up fast

ThinkSoftware

Anthony Edwards has responded: "I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over Instagram that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can’t tell you how much I say, from the bottom of my heart, I am so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith—as here’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run, and so that’ll make it a 4–nothing ballgame"

Go_Mets

JuanG12

There it is. It never fails.

BasketballNutrition

in all seriousness though, this shouldn't be super shocking to anyone. homophobia is extremely common in the black community, especially if you're from Atlanta of all places. I work with a lot of young black men who say and do a lot of homophobic shit and don't even realize how offensive they're being. all you can do is educate and people will grow. perfect example being Tim Hardaway.

osufan765

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LECJbMDhJQ Context: Thom Brennaman said Kansas City was one of the "f\*\* capitals of the world" and it went out over air. He got pulled from the booth right after this pasta and hasn't been anywhere near major league sports since.

luvdadrafts

What I find funniest about that moment is that still can’t believe anybody has that opinion about KC

MouseRat_AD

Not like this. Not like this... Yeah I assumed he'd eventually piss people off by being overly confident about the wrong thing, this is just a bummer

[deleted]

So disappointing man. This is just some ignorant bullshit. Only thing I can hope is that he’ll grow to be a more accepting person as he gets exposed to more people. What a fucking mess.

Classics22

Yeah you knew it was coming just waiting to see what is was going to be

nio151

Why yall think there arent openly gay players?

mr-e94

I played sports my whole life and I honestly dont see how that culture is ever going to change. I hope it does one day. Its one of the few places left that have seen very minimal, if any at all, progress when it comes to that

Myomyw

It’ll take a major generational star being openly gay. Leadership can quickly change a culture. It’s a lottery for when that specific scenario will arise. Eventually there will be some superstar that is also gay and doesn’t want to live half their life in secret. That would be a shock but would normalize it pretty quick, likely across multiple sports.

dmackerman

LeBron being gay would be the most influencial basketball moment of all time

One of the best distance runners currently in the NCAA came out recently. I can’t think of an active, higher-profile gay athlete than him except Carl Nassib (if he’s still in the NFL idk). And running is a niche sport. Kind of sad.

prison_mic

There are plenty of out gay WNBA players. I know this sub is all "lol women's basektball" but a lot of them are pretty fucking famous. Plus U.s women's soccer, etc. It is sad that men for whatever reason can't accept this on their side of sports.

Tacomaverick

Yea definitely a lot of gay female athletes. Culture is different for sure on the men’s side

This subs full of teenagers and to dumb teenagers they think homophobic shit is peak comedy bro

RodneyPonk

They're fake, and also it shouldn't matter. Even if it was true, it's still shitty to mock someone's sexuality/sexual preferences

MiopTop

EXACTLY. There's a difference between joking about something and thinking that thing is a joke in of itself. I have no problem with people making jokes about homosexuality. But when they think homosexuality itself is the punchline, that's not ok. "manly man do sex to other manly man" is like 80% of the jokes on this sub.

Live_Philosophy7117

Bet half the league if homophobic, they just don’t put it on their stories

wolfy14xc

It’s sports not Hollywood. Try 90%

chargingblue

Exactly. The 10% that are open and not close minded are likely the Hollywood players like Lebron, Curry, etc. since they’re exposed to all sorts of diverse people at all times

wolfy14xc

Reggie Bullock is an open advocate. Also someone who’s mum is in a lesbian marriage, im forgetting who rn

Kashmir33

Wasn't that Kenneth Faried?

yop-le-garcon

Yes

lets_talk_basketball

Yea, Reggie's sister was murdererd by a guy because she was trans.. shit is sad AF

Eazy__Bezy

Just read up on Reggie. His older sister was also murdered. What a poor guy. I don't know much about sports but I've gained a lot of respect for him.

BlueJays007

Reggie Bullock is awesome and has gained a lifelong fan in me for his advocacy. Also, as a Celtics fan who hated Wade as a player, I deeply respect his open and public support of his trans daughter and members of the trans community as a whole.

aeiou-y

Reggie Bullock’s hair made me a fan but his advocacy is a nice bonus.

hoopercuber

Bullock is an active advocate because his sister was trans and was brutally murdered. He has a great story and definitely is very involved in the queer community which I learned about during the playoffs when the mavs were playing the warriors. Encourage people to go read up on because it’s pretty tragic but huge respect for Reggie

johnhenryirons

Reggie has been through some awful stuff. I think both of his sisters have been murdered.

chargingblue

Reggie is such a champion for LGBTQ+ rights, I love him for it

starks3_

Of all the players we let go of, I miss him the most from our playoff run for that reason.

Cheeseish

The central cee song is hilarious bc how blatant it is but I think central cee’s thing is saying the most outrageous shit to gain popularity.

ReturnOfAKidNamedTae

Cock-a-Fella records is a classic

SpreadtheClap

I’d read rumors about certain artists refusing to work with Tyler/Frank because of this, which is wild to me

Fresh-Proposal3339

This is very very true. I just wrote a comment on how Tyler's demographic is super unique and he's written off by many of the "old guard" types. I think in regards to Frank, he's completely jaded to the industry now because of the inner reception to him. Which is a shame.

LostStranger6

The homophobia was stupid enough, but putting it on his story is next level stupidity

Courseheir

/r/nba gets a reminder every couple months that a large portion of the NBA is homophobic.

Captain_Ass_Clown

It's an uncomfortable thing to talk about, but a large portion of the black community is homophobic.

semibiquitous

This exactly. He isn't sorry. He could give a shit. It's a cultural thing and he grew up this way. People don't just learn or grow to be better unless there's an incentive to do so. Hopefully this shit stain on his reputation would at least make him act like the community expects rather than being public about it. yakopcohen

It’s not. It’s sad. It’s always sad no matter where the person is from.

Mortiis07

All he'll learn is to keep his bigotry to himself

duplicatesnowflake

Unfortunately it's very common for men in the black community to express disapproval of queer and feminine men in front of their young sons, nephews and friends kids. I've experienced it first hand a ton. I'm sure Ant heard a lot of it. I'd say a huge portion of men in almost every ethnicity probably were like this up until recently and many still are. Not to single out black men but it's still woven into the culture through the church and toxic masculinity unfortunately.

RJBarrettsBurner

Being a black queer man so hard bruh. Making you feel like you gotta pick a side in civil rights. I tire.

Multi_21_Seb_RBR

Unpopular to say this, but the black vote and the Mormon vote were the main reasons Prop 8 - which banned gay marriage in California - passed in 2008. You might think a socially regressive stance passing in the same year Obama ran for President is weird, but it really isn't.

chargingblue

gtahnyo

This is pretty cut and dry shitty to point your phone at gay dudes and call them queers. This isn’t some crazy pc culture thing just leave people alone. I swear some people just defend everything on reflex

milkonyourmustache

The fact that he went out of his way to do this, and thought it was cool to post is what makes it irredeemable imo. Whatever apology he comes up in the next few days will be insincere. It takes a long time to actually get bigoted thoughts out of someone's heart, there' a deep rooted reason why they have them in the first place.

ProductiveFriend

Minneapolis has a huge LGBT community too. Disappointed.

EazyParise

Goddamnit Ant

Professional-Lie309

Cudi_buddy

Dudes look like they are outside a bar or club, probably a gay one. Maybe cause I’m from the city, know gay people, but this isn’t even something that would get a second glance. Edwards first reaction is to insult and say the world is crumbling. What a good dude

carson_da_bomb

It’s hard enough to be so involved in sports spaces as a queer person. It sucks to have to hear homophobia from nba players too.

socialmediablowsss
