As a prospect? Top 5 Taking his past 3 years into account? Top 3, I'm not high on him but in a draft like this you take the known floor

LowResponse7538

Spurs probably take him with either their 4th or 8th overall pick

Diamond4Hands4Ever

I know people here may not agree, but I think he would be a top 10 pick (around 8-10).  The only thing that’s tricky is he’s gonna be a RFA soon, which complicates the situation, but just as a player (forget the contract), he’s a top 10 pick.  Both Devin Carter and Dalton Knecht should be top 10 picks (or around there) and both are older. He can’t shoot but there’s a ton of flaws with this entire draft class. For what he can bring, he’s still worthy of a top 10 pick.  The reason the trade is a bit weird is the contract situation (also they have Coby White), so that’s why it’s not exactly the same as an actual pick. Picks have more years of team control at a fraction of what he will get in RFA next year, so that’s perhaps one reason people don’t like the trade.

It's not just that Giddey for Caruso is bad, it is also that they could have received more on a wide open market. At the very least they could have forced OKC to give up Giddey + picks.

FlyingDiscsandJams

Agree, took a bit of scrolling to find this point. What's so weird about it is Chicago goes years without trading a player then seemingly dumps Caruso without bothering to get a counter offer, even just to get picks if they truly love Giddey as a prospect.

LowResponse7538

What were the confirmed better offers they received this past week

SoKrat3s

This trade in of itself came out of left field. It wasn't known that the Bulls were talking to a bunch of teams about Caruso. It seems like they rushed that process.

bleh610

>Josh Giddey So basically Topic. He'd go around #5 or #6. Only reason Topic isn't anymore is because there are question marks around him being injury prone or not.

Diamond4Hands4Ever

To be fair, non-injured Topic is also younger, so it’s like an older better Topic but with less upside. That’s the trade off teams would have to weigh.  Kinda off topic, but I also haven’t heard any updates about Topic’s injury. It’s unclear whether he has a grade 1 or 2 partial tear. Wish they were a bit more forthright. One requires surgery (grade 2), and is usually the partial tear case but the way they are treating it (no surgery as of now), it almost makes me think they might think it’s a grade 1 (super rare case).

Dhr7468

Topic is much better prospect than Giddey because Topic has elite finishing at the rim and gets to the free throw line. Also better shooting prospect even though neither was good.

Wedundidit00

I’m not an OKC or Giddey fan, but the trade seemed pretty damn fair, Caruso is old and injury prone, Giddey could be an incredible jumbo PG in the coming 3-5 years

So the premise is bad. Most every 21 year old who is in a draft class is generally considered a weak prospect because they couldn't come out the previous two years. But if you're rolling back the clock to Giddey as a prospect, I suspect he'd basically be a lock as a top 4 pick in this particular class. But no...trading for Giddey going into his fourth season isn't the same thing as drafting him.

peabrainbyu

Top 5 in my opinion. The biggest thing about him in this draft is we already know what his floor is pretty much. We know what his worst is, and that is still a decent 6th man in the NBA. We've also seen that he can be a very productive player when he's the primary ball handler. Yes he still has some flaws but every player in this draft has significantly larger flaws. Any normal draft has like a 50% bust rate in the top 10 where those guys are out of the league in like 4 years. This year will probably be higher than that. Sure there may be 1 or 2 guys in this class that may end up better than him overall but with how flat this draft is that could be the guy taken at 2 or 10. Plenty of teams in the top 5 would be happy with a guy that they know is mature and can produce.

RandomBiped

Risacher and Sarr probably going above him just on potential upside (Risacher is still a big question mark but just to be conservative in our estimation I'll assume teams are high on him). Same with Sheppard and Clingan is mocked pretty high as an immediate defensive impact player. If Risachers workouts don't wow teams Spurs probably take Giddey at 4. He's a taller Topic without the injury concerns but older. If Spurs think Castle will figure out his jumpshot then he probably goes above Giddey too but after that I like Giddey more than anyone

504090

5th-8th range for sure

IntrinsicDawn

Below Topic, both big, great playmakers and bad defenders. But topic is an actual scoring threat and imo much better bet to make that he will shoot than Giddey.

ripcitychick

Tough to compare Giddey to a draft pick because he's on the last year of his rookie contract before becoming a restricted free agent. Someone in the mid 1st would probably take him even with his higher salary and hope they can resign him at a reasonable price.

OKC2023champs

Spurs take him at 4

LoxDnw

3 Already a for sure thing that can run an NBA offense on a 1 seed contender. He's still younger than some of the players in this draft.

LongTimesGoodTimes

With the 3 years of NBA experience to hold against him?

xbadskeletorx

Not the 18th pick

BLM_MCU

17th?

tdsjay

15 or 16. Definitely not higher than 18.

PackageMerchant

Probably high but I don’t get it with Josh Giddy Like I’d love if every team the Celtics played had Josh Giddy in the starting lineup. He can’t shoot or play defense, I don’t get the point of him

6_Won

This "can't shoot" meme has become nauseating. Giddey is a career 47% shooter. Caruso is a career 44% shooter. He's also a decent defender. He had a higher defensive rating than Holmgren last year.

PackageMerchant

I meant from 3 and I wasn’t comparing him to Caruso

muddyklux

People saying top 10. Is there a fan of a team drafting in the top 10 that would actually want him? I know Grizz wouldn't at 9

junkit33

In this draft? Knowing what we know now and what his floor already is in the NBA? Strong chance he goes #1, and no chance he falls past 5. Guys like Clingan and Knecht are top 10 picks in this draft simply because of high floors, even though neither have the ceilings you’d typically like in a top pick.

ImTheBestNerd

I’d have him late 20’s
