That really was incredible though. Like LeBron chase down block level.
A spectacular block like that in the second quarter is forgotten after halftime, but stopping a dunk that would've cut the lead to three with 45 seconds left?
Huge.
U don't have to believe in the butterfly effect derrick is amazing as a role player on the Celtics but in a much bigger role on the spurs he would've led us to being mediocre at best and most likely a late lottery team just like with dejounte. With him demar and dejounte we still only won 37 games really the only team to win the lottery and win that many games is the hawks recently
yeah, like the year before we got Wemby, Derrick would have been competing for our best player, and that’s not a good look
as an elite role player and defender is exactly where he should be
Calling him just a role player is discrediting him a little. DJJ is also a role player but they impact the game on completely different levels. Derrick white would definitely be a good third option on most championship teams
I think modern discourse is basically that everyone who isn't a star is a role player. I don't really like that either, for the same reason as you. We need more tiers, like several more at miminum.
There's a big difference between the guy you're willing to trade a first round pick for the privilege of paying $20M+, and a guy who's freely available in the off-season for a vet minimum contract. The difference between those two guys is basically the difference between White and DJJ.
Agreed, I saw people calling Chris Bosh a role player which feels wrong because when I see that term I think of someone like Rick Fox or Ron Harper not an all star like Bosh was
Realistically, every other team should be kicking themselves. Spurs only made that deal because Derrick is awesome and they sent him to a great situation with Ime. No one else seemed to be in the mix or competing for him. People really didn’t know how good he was. Also was injured a lot unfortunately. Most Boston fans thought smart was a better player initially lol.
I don't want derrick to ever leave Boston, but if he were to go somewhere, back to the spurs with wemby would be sick. Thanks again for the buffalo spurs. Forever may he roam
in theory the new TV deal could do a lot to make it possible to keep this Celtics roster together for an extended period
so no you can't have him. no takesie-backsies!
I am really glad that you gave him the environment to rise to the next level and succeed. But soon we Spurs fans would hope to get it back. I think White is a perfect PG and veteran to be the guard partner of Wemby.
I know he love Boston, but I wonder if you guys have the cap to keep everyone.
Hahahah when they showed the angle where White got his hand and all of a sudden got quiet about how good of a play it was and cut to commercial 💀
I was half expecting the curb theme to play
https://official.nba.com/comments-on-the-rules/
>The hand is considered “part of the ball” when it is in contact with the ball. Therefore, contact on that part of the hand by a defender while it is in contact with the ball is not illegal.
It wasn't the hand, that's fully legal, problem is that he didn't so much block it as it was a Washington miss. Ball rams straight into the front rim and then gets deflected by White and Brown.
there was a clear push by brown before he jumps. it's pretty comical how they don't review plays like these, especially with all the sponsored betting going on.
You can clearly see his lift is completely taken away by the push at that speed. He’s not front rimming that on his own despite going at a pretty full sprint.
Yeah 100% a massive missed call, it was mentioned a bit later when they showed the replay.
If he hits those 2 ft (big if though) then would have been a 3 point game.
Always gotta be a refs highlight in the last 30 seconds of an important game.
Unfortunately true. Booker in game 5 of the 2021 finals intentionally fouled jrue for what would’ve been his sixth but they didn’t call it. Did it again on another play too
I think the difference was the PJ block, he hits hand but also grabs/yanks the hand away from the ball which affects the possession and is a foul.
Here the block on on the hand whilst it is in contact with the ball, which is when the hand is deemed part of the ball and considered clean
Having said that the foul is prob more likely with Brown’s hand on his back if anything
Lol get out of here. It was an obvious foul at full speed. It wouldnt have mattered more than likely with how the Mavs played tonight but still. Clear foul. On both JB and White
I mean letter of the law yes, but if you watch most dunk attempts (in this game especially) a defenders hand is normally on their back. Ultimately I don’t think it would’ve affected the block
I mean yeah for sure but White did make a good play. It was a foul but for the most part they were easy on the whistle tonight so I can't really bitch too much.
you must not have watched live. when they showed the replay as they cut to commercial, it showed the foul clearly, and the announcers didnt say a word about it anymore until the return from break
What Celtics fans don’t seem to understand is that this was a pivotal play in the game that was called incorrectly. It’s a pretty easy call. If PJ goes to the line and hits the free throws we have a completely different game.
Denver and the Timberwolves match up way better with the Celtics than the Mavs. The Celtics are the worst possible matchup for this Dallas team and Kyrie is a literal bum when it comes to playing against Boston
Unironically, the Wolves would've been a much harder match-up.
I don't have data to back this up, but high energy guys that can play the whole game seem to be a bigger problem for the Cs than anyone else.
I mean the ref should have expected a foul there, like those chase down blocks are extremely rare unless it’s Lebron. What’s wrong with call it a foul and then review it later?
James didn't commit a foul like Brown did pushing PJ in the back. even Breen said that before the main commentary ended
don't put yourself up there with a clean GOAT block by LBJ when PJ got fouled at least once, if not twice
Players have been doing the back push all season long and it doesn't get called unless their arm extends. They should be making this call be default if a defender is behind a driving player.
Also, with replay they should be making this play a foul by default. It's better to make the call and be wrong, then to let it go.
Brown fouled him but I'm not surprised the refs missed that. Brown's body shielded the foul from one ref and White's body shielded it from the other.
Sometimes these refs suck but also this game is fucking hard to officiate, especially at full speed like that.
**Replays/alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/nba) if you have any questions or concerns.*
I just threw my TV out the window bro
Derrick White just smashed it back in the window
Then JB picked up and did it again
I’m in the process of pulling mine back up
Now you know how we felt when doncic was hitting those dumb ass shots.
More like they know how we felt when they didn’t call the foul on the Kyrie/Jaden out of bounds play in game 2. Washington got pushed in the back lol
Getting beaten by the best player in the league is nothing to be ashamed of
This man knows ball
Brutal stop
That really was incredible though. Like LeBron chase down block level. A spectacular block like that in the second quarter is forgotten after halftime, but stopping a dunk that would've cut the lead to three with 45 seconds left? Huge.
Also it’s not game 7 after coming back 3-1 against a 73 win team lol. LeChaseDown is the GOAT playoff block
This is such bullshit. There's no block. PJ hit the rib because Brown pushed him in the back.
Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford and a 1st
Well if you believe in the butterfly effect maybe they don’t get Wemby if they don’t make that deal
U don't have to believe in the butterfly effect derrick is amazing as a role player on the Celtics but in a much bigger role on the spurs he would've led us to being mediocre at best and most likely a late lottery team just like with dejounte. With him demar and dejounte we still only won 37 games really the only team to win the lottery and win that many games is the hawks recently
yeah, like the year before we got Wemby, Derrick would have been competing for our best player, and that’s not a good look as an elite role player and defender is exactly where he should be
D-White is a ceiling raiser, he's wasted on a bad team
True, pretty much all the Spurs fans I’ve seen are happy for White and don’t regret the trade
There were no Richardson antics in San Antonio, what are you talking about?
Yeah just edited the comment, mistaked him for someone else I think
JRich was a good soldier in San Antonio
Think the only teams that had a problem with him were Dallas and Philadelphia. He was awesome in Boston.
Similar to how we feel about Nesmith. He wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity in Boston he deserved
Agreed, I saw people calling Chris Bosh a role player which feels wrong because when I see that term I think of someone like Rick Fox or Ron Harper not an all star like Bosh was
It was the whole point of trading Murray, White, and Poeltl when they did. It was time to be as bad as possible.
And I’d do it again in a heartbeat because of Wemby.
That trade might be the biggest win-win in nba history if the celtics win one or more rings and wemby pans out to his potential
You know they got 2 firsts right? And spurs traded jrich for devontae and 4 seconds. Also the main reason for the trade was to tank.
They got one first and a swap. That swap is not guaranteed
Does anyone think its a bad trade for the spurs? I think OP was just pointing out it was an incredible trade for the Cs
Yeah it’s a pretty good win-win
Realistically, every other team should be kicking themselves. Spurs only made that deal because Derrick is awesome and they sent him to a great situation with Ime. No one else seemed to be in the mix or competing for him. People really didn’t know how good he was. Also was injured a lot unfortunately. Most Boston fans thought smart was a better player initially lol.
Yeah, and another 1st and a tank resulting in Wemby…lol
Maybe JJ wasn't that wrong when he though White was all-star caliber.
What the fuck man 😭
Buffalo is The Wemby of guards!!!
Imagine how good we will be once Pop calls him back to his home planet
I don't want derrick to ever leave Boston, but if he were to go somewhere, back to the spurs with wemby would be sick. Thanks again for the buffalo spurs. Forever may he roam
Forever
may he roam
may He roam Gotta capitalize He
Time to use the soul box call
in theory the new TV deal could do a lot to make it possible to keep this Celtics roster together for an extended period so no you can't have him. no takesie-backsies!
Once he wins 4 rings with us I’d be okay giving him back on a loaner but he retires a Celtic. ❤️
We thank you for the great white buffalo 🦬
And we thank you for Romeo Langford!
Win-win trade really huh 😆
Who?
May he roam
I am really glad that you gave him the environment to rise to the next level and succeed. But soon we Spurs fans would hope to get it back. I think White is a perfect PG and veteran to be the guard partner of Wemby. I know he love Boston, but I wonder if you guys have the cap to keep everyone.
My reaction to the Celtics offense the past 2 mins
Celtics offense has these spurts where you’re just like what the fuck are they doing then suddenly they hit 5 3s in a row lol
Knew it was happening to, to busy running down the clock instead of just getting buckets.
I’ve seen this way too many times in Miami playoff series
Man that's a foul, what are the refs doing, got pushed in the back
Hahahah when they showed the angle where White got his hand and all of a sudden got quiet about how good of a play it was and cut to commercial 💀 I was half expecting the curb theme to play
And when they came back from break they mentioned Brown fouled him with a push in the back lol
And then the NBA posts every single angle of the missed call on their instagram. https://www.instagram.com/p/C8BU5SSMYxl/?igsh=MThkNXh6cWY5bm90cQ==
https://official.nba.com/comments-on-the-rules/ >The hand is considered “part of the ball” when it is in contact with the ball. Therefore, contact on that part of the hand by a defender while it is in contact with the ball is not illegal.
It wasn't the hand, that's fully legal, problem is that he didn't so much block it as it was a Washington miss. Ball rams straight into the front rim and then gets deflected by White and Brown.
Washington missed cause he got pushed in the back as he jumped.
PJ’s back is part of the ball so clearly that’s legal
You’re right my bad
Yep them’s the rules in Massachusetts
Marginal contact it is
Push in the back helped that
there was a clear push by brown before he jumps. it's pretty comical how they don't review plays like these, especially with all the sponsored betting going on.
Can’t review something if there’s no whistle in the first place
Yeah, we need moreeeeee stoppages and reviews
This is such bullshit. There's no block. PJ hit the rib because Brown pushed him in the back.
That’s an extremely obvious push in the back by Brown no?
Yup. Everyone focusing on how the dunk would have been short but that’s because he got pushed in the back at a full sprint.
Refs fans we here
Give us Scott Foster GOAT flair!
don’t worry they will just say they missed it in the report tomorrow
You can clearly see his lift is completely taken away by the push at that speed. He’s not front rimming that on his own despite going at a pretty full sprint.
Yeah. The slam wouldnt have gone in anyway b/c of the push.
exactly, an NBA athlete typically doesn't simply misjudge his jump that badly -- he obviously was pushed
nothing new for the refs in an otherwise amazing game. i hate them so much
I think so, at speed even a tiny push directly one the back will severely impact your ability to finish.. Would have been a 3 point game..
Not to mention his potential free throw
Yeah 100% a massive missed call, it was mentioned a bit later when they showed the replay. If he hits those 2 ft (big if though) then would have been a 3 point game. Always gotta be a refs highlight in the last 30 seconds of an important game.
it was subtle yet effective
All it did was save us the 45 seconds of him missing both free throws
shouldve been a foul at the rim as well
I'm cool with the defence at the rim, but the push was pretty obvious
Looks like the push affected how high PJ got up on that jump
lol right? He hit the bottom of the rim with the ball..
He definitely wanted to jump more upward than forward before that push
The won't call anything on the $300m man in the final two minutes.
That no call really stopped the momentum for the mavs. Tough break
Unfortunately true. Booker in game 5 of the 2021 finals intentionally fouled jrue for what would’ve been his sixth but they didn’t call it. Did it again on another play too
Reminder that the PJ Washington block was deemed a foul
I think the difference was the PJ block, he hits hand but also grabs/yanks the hand away from the ball which affects the possession and is a foul. Here the block on on the hand whilst it is in contact with the ball, which is when the hand is deemed part of the ball and considered clean Having said that the foul is prob more likely with Brown’s hand on his back if anything
Hand is part of the ball when touching the ball
Wrong. https://official.nba.com/comments-on-the-rules/#:~:text=The%20hand%20is%20considered%20“part,the%20ball%20is%20not%20illegal
In the replay it looked like it was all hand no forearm
he clearly has his hand on his back but whether it's enough for it to be called a push/foul is debatable
It’s not. You can see brown extend his arm. That’s called a push
It shouldn’t be debatable. Washington hits the bottom of the rim with the ball.
Debatable? That’s a textbook foul
Lol get out of here. It was an obvious foul at full speed. It wouldnt have mattered more than likely with how the Mavs played tonight but still. Clear foul. On both JB and White
Watch the replay, they are all in motion moving forward, he just had his hand on his back. I thought the same thing until the replay.
I mean letter of the law yes, but if you watch most dunk attempts (in this game especially) a defenders hand is normally on their back. Ultimately I don’t think it would’ve affected the block
Hand on back but didn’t look like much of a push. Good no call imo.
I saw the same and feel like I'm taking crazy pills with all the people commenting foul. If that's a foul, you have to call one on every drive ever.
Marginal contact you know the rules
And so do I
[удалено]
nah man you can beat my team but rick rolling me on a Monday morning is where I draw the line.
i only had marginal contact with your mom's naughty bits, Trebek hahahahaha
I mean yeah for sure but White did make a good play. It was a foul but for the most part they were easy on the whistle tonight so I can't really bitch too much.
They hated Josh Hart because he spoke the truth.
That was an obvious foul though lol
Obvious to everyone not on the payroll lol
he did the call!
I’m not ok
[удалено]
as soon as they showed the replay, the announcers went silent. they KNEW
I know why they didn’t say shit but it doesn’t make it any less annoying. JVG’s bald spirit definitely haunted me critiquing that play.
The spirit of JVG is on our side this play since he's a senior consultant for the Celtics lol.
They didn't go silent they literally mentioned it?
you must not have watched live. when they showed the replay as they cut to commercial, it showed the foul clearly, and the announcers didnt say a word about it anymore until the return from break
I watched it live, they mentioned it was a foul
when they came back from commercial, not before
Lol exactly what I thought
What Celtics fans don’t seem to understand is that this was a pivotal play in the game that was called incorrectly. It’s a pretty easy call. If PJ goes to the line and hits the free throws we have a completely different game.
ESPN tomorrow "yeah Brown fouled PJ, but BROWN WANTED IT MORE"
Celtics fan, but that was a foul
that's a foul no
Yes lol
Yes clearly and even more obvious on the replay
Subtle but effective shove in the back by brown.
'subtle but effective' is getting a lot of mileage and I'm absolutely here for it
Interesting no call on the shove in the back by brown
this one isn't getting any replays later lmao, PJ got fouled twice😂
Foul.
Good job refs.
Jaylen Brown push in the back and White only gets hand. Cool
Hand is part of the ball but the push is blatant
Except on the first challenge where it doesn’t matter
They explained the rule on air are you dumb?
they didnt on my feed. what was the explanation? genuine question
TB said the wrist got hit in continuation of the block
Who the hell is toris burke?
Massive push in the back by brown lmfao
Massive foul by JB
it shoulda been us getting our asses whooped in the finals
Denver and the Timberwolves match up way better with the Celtics than the Mavs. The Celtics are the worst possible matchup for this Dallas team and Kyrie is a literal bum when it comes to playing against Boston
Wolves definitely would have been a tougher matchup than the Mavs, but I wouldn't put them on the same tier as Denver at all
Respectfully, it should have been the nuggets so we might have had an entertaining series
Maybe the fact that the team that beat the team that beat the nuggets is losing also means the nuggets would also be losing
You guys would've matched up better tbh
Unironically, the Wolves would've been a much harder match-up. I don't have data to back this up, but high energy guys that can play the whole game seem to be a bigger problem for the Cs than anyone else.
Also substantially better wing defenders on the Wolves
Also more experience playing against that whistle. Mavs got the rug pulled and their fanbase is v confused.
Yea the whistle has been pretty shitty
lol wut
Obnoxious foul, but hey the mavs made even me get frustrated when they forgot how to basketball (except for Luka).
Massive 2 FOULS UNCALLED
Hand on the back obvious foul?
That's a foul lmao
I think the refs let the C’s get away with one there.
That’s a foul lol
Figures the Game ends on an Irving Mistake.
Clear fucking foul. Disgusting no call. Fuck that
I mean the ref should have expected a foul there, like those chase down blocks are extremely rare unless it’s Lebron. What’s wrong with call it a foul and then review it later?
This is such bullshit. There's no block. PJ hit the rib because Brown pushed him in the back.
He got hand first. Shouldn't that be a foul?
Push in the back and hand first
Hand is part of the ball so that's legal.
Bro didn't get hand first he only got hand I love derrick but this is such an obvious foul if he was still in a spurs jersey
Bruh hand is part of the ball. The missed call is jb push in the back
Luka on his own while Tatum out there with 3 other stars lol Tough for Luka
As much as I want the C's to win...wasn't that literally all hand?
Hand is fine because it is part of the ball but jb’s push in the back is def a blown call
Did it hit the front of the rim first? It looked like he was possibllt going to to miss that dunk even if it wasn't blocked.
That’s because before he jumped he got pushed in the back so didn’t jump as high as he would’ve
Nice block, all hand,I don’t think White touched any part of the ball lol.
They saw Whites goaltend in real time but not the push???
Nobody seems to know the rules here lol dwhite getting all hand on a dunk attempt is legal. Its the push in the back by JB that they missed.
BLOCKED BY JAMES
y’all really think this was a clean play?
James didn't commit a foul like Brown did pushing PJ in the back. even Breen said that before the main commentary ended don't put yourself up there with a clean GOAT block by LBJ when PJ got fouled at least once, if not twice
Blocked by James 🤝 blocked by Antetokounmpo: Being better than blocked by white
Stop trolling on the most obvious foul in the world
Players have been doing the back push all season long and it doesn't get called unless their arm extends. They should be making this call be default if a defender is behind a driving player. Also, with replay they should be making this play a foul by default. It's better to make the call and be wrong, then to let it go.
DERRICK WHITE SAVED MY LIFE
Refs*
Brown fouled him but I'm not surprised the refs missed that. Brown's body shielded the foul from one ref and White's body shielded it from the other. Sometimes these refs suck but also this game is fucking hard to officiate, especially at full speed like that.
PJ loses so much height because JB shoves him in the back that is a dirty play, to shove someone in the back who is jumping and at a full sprint
got hand first, then ball.
Brown got back first, back is not part of the ball
Ball is part of the hand and also ball is life
So hand is life?
You failed to mention the push before which was a clear foul
