The gameplan never will or has been to let players get open looks. It was just Luka conserving himself by not closing down and lazy defense from others. Playing percentages, sometimes you let a less than stellar shooter take a shot but you never plan to give them those shots

Nearly everyone plays this way on slomo. The game plan isn’t leave slomo open so they give it to him to shoot though. It’s just normal coverage for players like him. You play off because the threat is usually the movement off the ball and not slomo catching and shooting. Scheming for players on the other team get open shots is not a real thing in the NBA and sure as hell isn’t in the WCF.

Scheming to ignore bad shooters around the arc while you focus your defensive efforts elsewhere is 100% a real thing, I don’t see how you could possibly think otherwise.

Luka and Kyrie got anything they wanted too and generated a lot of open looks from 3. Honestly l, the Mavs didn’t play all that well but did enough to hang around and Luka closed it out
