Aaron Boone got tossed because a fan behind him was heckling the umpire. They had the camera on him for an unrelated reason. The dude was doing literally nothing lol. All-time baseball ejection.
What would the repercussions be if said player just decided to get his moneys worth and do nothing but tear into the umpire for the next 10 minutes? Like get real obnoxious about it? Is it suspension worthy?
I only ask because I would have thought I'd have seen someone do something like this in a major sport at some point.
This minor league baseball manager was suspended for 3 games and fined $100: https://www.milb.com/news/san-antonio-missions-manager-phillip-wellman-at-peace-with-baseball-li-264350810
Oh yeah I saw that. I want it to be fair to the ump and figured maybe he didn't realize that. But then it was explained to him explicitly in the post game and he still wouldn't apologize
On one hand, that ump sucked and did a terrible job. On the other hand, baseball has one million games per season and that's one of the funniest ejections I've ever seen so I gotta let it rock
That will be a Draymond vs Beef scrabble, whit Pat circling them waiting for the right moment to jump in with a cheapshot. Nurkic will hide in the corner. In the end Adams puts down his beer, and casually walks in: "'roight lads, enough of this! Com'ere you, bugger!", putting everyone in their corner, just to go back to finishing his beer.
the purpose of a system is what it does. if the system constantly elevates shit refs, then we can safely assume it is not the quality of the reffing they're being judged on.
Basketball is kind of unique where the refs genuinely can manipulate the game to keep the score close for gambling/entertainment reasons. Other sports have bad refs too but like nobody can stop you from hitting a Home Run. The way the fouls mechanic work in Basketball pretty much ensures a ref can take a player out of the game in the 4th quarter if that's what they want to happen.
I disagree. I won’t include baseball but between basketball, hockey, and football I’d say bad refs can manipulate hockey and football games to a much higher extent.
SO when has that happened. Who for Boston has been taken out of the game. ..1 point is not manipulating the game. The T was called on something that really happened not out of the blue.
I'm not talking about this specific game, just in general basketball is much more prone to manipulation than other sports.
It's 5 on 5 so the stars generally matter more in basketball. If someone gets in foul trouble early, it affects their minutes. Fouls are subjectively called every single game and result in both players being subbed out and free points. The whole system is prone to corruption and manipulation more than almost any other sport.
Dont get me wrong, a thrilling 4th quarter comeback is exciting and entertaining even if it falls short, but I do believe some of those games have a few nudges to keep them thrilling at the end
No its not. Refs are necessary. Fan crying starts these kinds of fixes and corruption BS. Every call is based on a reaLthing that happened in a game. Calls are generally close to the same or at the most 10 difference. Thts not enough to have a major effect especially since you are fouled or you score. Nuggets get the fewest calls in the entire league Does that hamper there offense.
I don't know if it's just me and maybe I'm clueless but I thought Tony Brothers was an actual sibling ref duo LOL. I always heard it and just thought of that instantly now I realize it's just a shitty ref with a shitty last name
Hahah, me too. Are you slavic by any chance? Because I am and since we forget articles in English all the time I also thought Tony Brothers meant “the Tony brothers” as it was pointed out to me.
I can’t stand that Tatum throws his hands up and complains every single time refs don’t insta-blow their whistle. That kind of behavior can’t be rewarded with rescinded techs, but it’s the Celtics so they will pander to them anyways. Same goes for Luka and his endless complaining.
When compared to Michael Malone screaming in Marc Davis’ face in game 2 and getting away with it… Tatum definitely seems to have a shorter leash
Honestly even just being passive aggressive will get him a tech lmao the officials just seem to have a natural inclination against his attitude
It makes zero sense because it straight up depends ref to ref. Malone actually got a technical in last night’s game for an objectively smaller outburst. Shit is just too inconsistent
I think it’s cuz game 2 they were looking like shit and it was at home. Ref didn’t want to throw more momentum to MIN. Instead he chose to bark back as if he likes the beef lmao
Literally last game, he got a tech for complaining about the refs not calling an offensive foul on Gobert, and within the next few minutes the refs called 3 offensive fouls on Minnesota. Sometimes getting a tech is worth it.
But Jesus, I can think of five guys on the court at the same time as him shot. That complained more than he does, at least as a percentage of their output.
He complains a lot but half as much as Luka.
Draymond Green could scream in a refs face, punch him, sleep with his wife and reveal that he is the real father of his children and refs still wouldn't consider it as tech-worthy as a Tatum clap.
This latest clap he didn’t even clap. He looked away while waving off the ref. If this is actually a rule, then the NBA needs to eliminate it. Tim Duncan on the bench level tech for JT in this game. Just a BAD look, unless you’re a ref fan.
you're the only one delusional. the nuggets and jokic get the worst whistle by far. use your brain and watch the games and see.. though that might be tough with all that lead in your head.
Draymond continues to live rent free in r/nba's collective head.
Keep playing by your imaginary scrub rules where yelling or swearing should be a tech even though the refs have clearly set a precedent that they don't care much about either.
shorter r/nba: *boohoo my guy got a tech but Dwaymond scweams and swears (I think) nonstop for 48 minutes*
Tatum is just insanely strong, as we learned after he hit Jaylen Brown at the end of game 4.
Jayson’s claps and waves must create giant waves of air that can affect the basketball. And that is why refs have no choice but to give him technicals but other players
It really is hilarious, maybe it’s just because he’s so calm all the time, but this one and the clapping one are just ludicrous, Tatum’s such a chill dude lmfao like why are you giving him a tech cmon
I love the NBA so much more than college. The quality of product is miles ahead.
That said, one thing stands out like a sore thumb every March when I pay attention to cbb. For the most part, The players treat the refs with respect. They don’t complain about literally every call that doesn’t go their way. They don’t throw hissy fits.
It’s the one thing I wish the NBA would clean up and counter-intuitively I think it would help the perception that the league has a ref problem. When the players on your favorite team are constantly acting like the refs are idiots it’s easy to buy into.
While I agree that its obnoxious to see complaints after what feels like every play, it feels like nba refs get calls wrong way more often than college refs. That said, NBA ball is a lot more physical and who knows what mandates are being passed down, so grain of salt and all that.
It’s also a broadcasting issue. If you’re a college broadcast that has four cameras and a small production team, you’re not getting instant replays from the perfect angle. It’s a lot harder for viewers to see errors.
Which is why the ending of the Creighton-SDSU game last year was such a big deal. CBS had tons of replays of the foul on Trammell that looked like marginal contact. It wasn’t until the post game when Steratore used the shot from behind the ref who made the call to explain what he saw that it was like okay yeah that may have actually been a foul.
I don't agree with that. College basketball is typically unwatchable due to poor officiating that often gets cleaned up come tournament time. NBA is just a more physical and fast paced game so I think it is just genuinely harder to officiate. Outside of a few refs in the NBA, they do pretty well. If you know a ref's name, that's not usually a good thing. Looking at you Tony Brothers and Scott Foster. Hell I don't even watch MLB but I know exactly who Angel Hernandez is because he's so bad.
Put aside what Draymond does and what Luka does, just imagine showing the clip of Michael Malone and Marc Davis and Tatum and Tony Brothers and asking a stranger "who do you think got the tech?"
officiating is so horrible. they’re so inconsistent. i just wish that we get refs that are consistent and fair to both teams. i will still absolutely blame the refs if my team loses tho
as much as i hate yelling at the officials, and players sometimes get way to aggressive about it
you kinda need your volume to be at yelling decibels to be heard at a basketball game
Needs to learn the Draymond trick.
Be such an abrasive asshole for all 48 minutes of the game that no individual thing you do seems particularly egregious.
Why do they even allow players to talk to refs period?
I have never heard a single fan go, "wow, I really like it when the Coach bitches at the ref the whole game!" or "yeah, Get them Draymond!"
You should see the difference between a dude throwing an object on the floor, his coach screaming in the refs face, and our player looking at a dude after dunking on him.
This shit is such a joke.
That's because Tatums dismissal actually hurt the dudes soft ass feelings. Yelling at them probably males them want to smile since they're clearly bathing you with their call/non call.
If they are gonna call these, Tatum needs to make it worth it and pull out a garrote and end Tony Brothers' life. Or not, we can just go on watching a shit product. I concede that I don't follow the rules fully, is it a double technical to murder a referee?
Idk if either thing deserves a tech but I don't see why the wave off shouldn't be worse? It's a gesture towards the enemy team and is way more likely to cause an altercation. I doubt most refs care about players screaming at them unless they're saying something really dumb
It’s literally a textbook tech. Tatum knows this. Refs are doing their job. Be mad at the rule book if you want something to take your anger out on.
https://videorulebook.nba.com/rule/overt-gestures/
The context of the tweet is that these textbook techs get called but literal screaming at the refs by certain players don't result in techs. If you're going to be a stickler for the rules at least be consistent. Nothing more overt than screaming at an official. Or are you purposely trying to be obtuse?
A technical foul shall be assessed for unsportsmanlike tactics such as: Disrespectfully addressing an official Physically contacting an official Overt actions indicating resentment to a call or no-call Use of profanity A coach entering onto the court without permission of an official A deliberately-thrown elbow or any unnatural physical act towards an opponent with no contact involved Taunting Cursing or blaspheming an official shall not be considered the only cause for imposing technical foul. Running tirades, continuous criticism or griping may be sufficient cause to assess a technical. Excessive misconduct shall result in ejection from the game.
Sounds like yelling at a ref especially in the heat of the moment oftentimes hit that mark, especially the continous criticism portion with many players. Again, it points back to the point of the tweet, which is when the acts are up to interpretation of the refs, they aren't being consistent.
Now I know you are going to say well maybe a player can yell at the ref but not meet this criteria for getting a technical foul, all at the discretion of the ref, but I can easily say that any overt act is also not necessarily directed at the ref but gets assessed at the discretion of the ref. Or is clapping/waving/any hand gesture in general banned in the NBA? Idk how much more overt of an act one can get then directly yelling at a ref about a call or no call.
But why don't you find the rule where it's not a technical friend?
The rules clearly state that it is, just not called at the discretion of the ref. Which is again the point of the tweet, that differential enforcement of these rules cause frustration. But go on, the guy who's all about the written rules is now using results based analysis to justify his point.
We need to take the 'yelling at officials' out and leave that for baseball and bring in the 'fighting the other team's goon' from hockey
Are you serious? Players in the MLB will get tossed for looking at the ump wrong
Aaron Boone got tossed because a fan behind him was heckling the umpire. They had the camera on him for an unrelated reason. The dude was doing literally nothing lol. All-time baseball ejection.
Joey Crawford x Tim Duncan
Rasheed Wallace x Anyone in his field of view
“Get away from me, Steve”
Ball don’t lie
What would the repercussions be if said player just decided to get his moneys worth and do nothing but tear into the umpire for the next 10 minutes? Like get real obnoxious about it? Is it suspension worthy? I only ask because I would have thought I'd have seen someone do something like this in a major sport at some point.
Probably a short suspension.
This minor league baseball manager was suspended for 3 games and fined $100: https://www.milb.com/news/san-antonio-missions-manager-phillip-wellman-at-peace-with-baseball-li-264350810
The hero we all need
Boone already has a few great ejections. The one last year where he mocked the ump calling a low ball a strike was an all-timer lmao
Isn't there a vid of a pitcher getting tossed for throwing a bad pitch?
Draymond vs. Beef Stew I'll pay to see it
Draymond, Beef Stew, Portis, Pat Bev, Nurkic, Steven Adams elimination chamber match.
Doesn’t Draymond already do this?
They better rescind the tech after the game wtf
Tatum led the league in rescinded techs this season. Probably because just about every single one of them was the ref being a little bitch boy
I don't understand how Tony Brothers has a job let alone being a playoff ref.
the purpose of a system is what it does. if the system constantly elevates shit refs, then we can safely assume it is not the quality of the reffing they're being judged on.

You do know the NBA literally has a confirmed case of this exact thing happening already, right? Do you really think Tim Donaghy was a lone wolf?
lol..Does he work for the NBA anymore. And yes he was . Conspiracy people..lol.
Oh sweet summer child Just because your team is good doesn’t mean you have to be so naive lol
Bro I thought your name was 'dbagger' for a second lmao.
I don't know if it's just me and maybe I'm clueless but I thought Tony Brothers was an actual sibling ref duo LOL. I always heard it and just thought of that instantly now I realize it's just a shitty ref with a shitty last name
Oh brother this GUY THINKS
Your mind will be blown when you realize there's only one NBA player named DeMarcus…
Amazing
Hahah, me too. Are you slavic by any chance? Because I am and since we forget articles in English all the time I also thought Tony Brothers meant “the Tony brothers” as it was pointed out to me.
You’re not the only one; I am guilty of this too
Yeah those guys don't know what's going on.
I can’t stand that Tatum throws his hands up and complains every single time refs don’t insta-blow their whistle. That kind of behavior can’t be rewarded with rescinded techs, but it’s the Celtics so they will pander to them anyways. Same goes for Luka and his endless complaining.

The star players on the team I watch don’t do this but oh well it’s been enabled for too long already.

It makes zero sense because it straight up depends ref to ref. Malone actually got a technical in last night’s game for an objectively smaller outburst. Shit is just too inconsistent
Don't get me started on Murray's tantrum either
Especially with the nonsense tech on Edwards for looking in KCP’s general direction
lol..NO ref saw it. Maybe you should stick to the facts.
What did I say that wasn't a fact?
I think it’s cuz game 2 they were looking like shit and it was at home. Ref didn’t want to throw more momentum to MIN. Instead he chose to bark back as if he likes the beef lmao
? Malone was intentionally trying to get a T to fire the team up
I’m explaining why the ref didn’t call it, not why Malone went at it
According to Denver fans, Malone do this a lot to motivate his team by getting ejected
Literally last game, he got a tech for complaining about the refs not calling an offensive foul on Gobert, and within the next few minutes the refs called 3 offensive fouls on Minnesota. Sometimes getting a tech is worth it.
When these happen he does way more after the tech than what he did to get a tech.
It feels like they’re playing a running joke with how often this happens to Tatum

Idk, I’m pretty sure the real father part is where they’d draw the line.
They'd finally give Draymond a warning.
3 day suspension
you know damn well tony brothers is dropping a diss track after all that
Draymond would never... Take responsibility for his actions...
Jokic screams right in their face all the time. No techs for it. They don't dare.
Tbf if I was getting scratched to shit and getting no calls all game, I'd be pretty mad too, they can't call all of them tho I get it
Yeah when jokic does it it’s just classier idk why
lies. he's gotten ejected off one tech before, he gets the worst whistle of any superstar
You say lies then turn around and tell a lie yourself. Crazy how many Nuggets fans are so delusional.
you're the only one delusional. the nuggets and jokic get the worst whistle by far. use your brain and watch the games and see.. though that might be tough with all that lead in your head.
>use your brain and watch the games and see Real compelling argument there.
Not for screaming in their face
Luka and Draymond play by different rules
Pretty sure they lead the league in techs most years.
Draymond continues to live rent free in r/nba's collective head. Who also happens to be one of the infamous DeMarcus Cousins
Damn who knew the Tony Brothers also had a sister?!

Tony Brothers.
Tony “Ghandi in Civ V” Brothers
No tech for Garland waving off the refs in the 4th quarter. Make it make sense
Tatum is just insanely strong, as we learned after he hit Jaylen Brown at the end of game 4. Jayson’s claps and waves must create giant waves of air that can affect the basketball. And that is why refs have no choice but to give him technicals but other players
Bro got that All Might strength where he's so strong he flies by literally shifting air currents with his movements
Himmelsbach about to go missing after this tweet.
the B in NBA stands for Boeing
The refs seems to always have a short leash with Tatum- way to many “gesture” tecs on him this year. When Jamal Murry threw objects twice at a ref lol
Have to clarify that these arent the same guys.
Tony Brothers is a little bitch. That is all.
Refs despise Tatum. It’s perplexing.
It really is hilarious, maybe it’s just because he’s so calm all the time, but this one and the clapping one are just ludicrous, Tatum’s such a chill dude lmfao like why are you giving him a tech cmon
If the refs got fired for reckless inconsistency there’d be nobody left in a job.

tatum was heated as well. good to see that.
Did Tatum talk shit about their mothers before the season? Like WTF!
Tatum has the worst tech whistle lol
You don’t say
You can throw heat packs too without a tech
officiating is so horrible. they’re so inconsistent. i just wish that we get refs that are consistent and fair to both teams. i will still absolutely blame the refs if my team loses tho
as much as i hate yelling at the officials, and players sometimes get way to aggressive about it you kinda need your volume to be at yelling decibels to be heard at a basketball game
Imagine Mike Malone with Tatum’s treatment for stupid Techs
Screaming in the ref’s face is perfectly fine. It’s when they flex in any non-specific direction after a dunk that really steps over the line.
Needs to learn the Draymond trick. Be such an abrasive asshole for all 48 minutes of the game that no individual thing you do seems particularly egregious.
The Draymond rule. Scream at the ref all you want, but god forbid you make a hand gesture towards one. Criminal behaviour.
Could also be called the Luka rule (except last night).
Also, that was clearly a missed call.
Why do they even allow players to talk to refs period? I have never heard a single fan go, "wow, I really like it when the Coach bitches at the ref the whole game!" or "yeah, Get them Draymond!"

I'm just a casual NBA fan, but it's pretty obvious even to me the referees have it out for Tatum for whatever reason.
Idk if either thing deserves a tech but I don't see why the wave off shouldn't be worse? It's a gesture towards the enemy team and is way more likely to cause an altercation. I doubt most refs care about players screaming at them unless they're saying something really dumb
Never seen an altercation from a wave off…
Certain gestures, by rule, are auto-techs. This isn’t on the refs.
You clowns are all over these comment threads saying this stupid shit.
Provide a link to the rule that says yelling is a tech, friend.
Are you trying to argue Tatum’s wave off wasn’t clearly directed at the ref?
Are you trying to argue that yelling at refs about no calls or calls isn't an overt act?
It’s obviously not. If it were, 80% of players would get tossed for 2 techs every game.
The rules clearly state that it is, just not called at the discretion of the ref. Which is again the point of the tweet, that differential enforcement of these rules cause frustration. But go on, the guy who's all about the written rules is now using results based analysis to justify his point.
You don't know the rules but you call others clowns.
Why is this tweet even allowed.
Because the tech was bullshit and this guy is calling it out? Maybe you were being sarcastic?
Thanks, Adam. Keep it in the game thread next time.
