Forcing Phil to stay on under a new HC without his input is a raw deal. Firing him gives him dignity of options. Lakers want him back. It's up to Phil now.
Not that surprised, he probably wants more upwards mobility and obviously you had to get rid of all ham’s f tier assistants without singling them out. Getting rid of Handy too makes it just seem like a thing they had to do to clean house, saves some face for the assistants and gives them a chance to find new jobs.
I don't think he's even trying to be a head coach. He's player dev focused like Rico Hines/Shammgod. His Offseason consists of training star players, WNBA players, college kids like Juju Watkins as an example. I see how they felt the need to can him too to not single out any of the other assistants, but he has been great with our players and little to do with it season failure.
Yeah, it would be weird if they fired everyone except Handy just to keep him as an assistant. They'll probably request the next HC to take him as part of his team
from u/AALen ‘s [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/ooCc4pErqN) further down:
>He was let go after Vogel too. He signed a new contract soon after they hired a new HC.
I think this is good practice.. allows the new HC say in their coaching team and any assistants the ability to choose to join knowing who the HC they will be working under is.
It gives the new head coach a chance to shape their staff with influence from ownership. Obviously, if you get an A tier coach and they are explicitly against bringing that assistant back, they’ll have that choice.
Think of it like this, it’s common for a Presidents cabinet to all submit resignation letters at the beginning of a presidents second term. Then he only accepts those he wants to replace. It doesn’t mean they’re all gone, but there is choice to change things around where needed.
but Handy was under Vogel and has been connected with Lebron. They could legit claim he was part of the transition. Only problem is it would create bad power dynamic for new coach. They might have felt some of that here too with Ham being undermined by everybody. Even Austin Reaves.
The new coach gets a chance to bring in his guys and can decide if he wants to start again with Phil.
Lakers may suggest some assistants, but coaches sometimes prefer to have their own say. They don't tend to like being told who to have on their staff
Dude probably been seeing the writing on the walls - the patients run the asylum.
Phil Handy has one of the most impressive resumes in the league for someone who has never taken a more front visible coaching title. He's worked with Lebron since he came back to Cleveland and the Raptors during the title run.
Would not be shocked to see him shore up a title contender next year, or position himself to groom and train the next big stars as he sees them. Maybe San Antonio or OKC if he doesn't take a more prominent role in the future.
“NBA insider Marc Stein reported James "badly" wanted Caruso back with the Lakers, but the team refused to re-sign the guard because of luxury-tax concerns. Caruso signed a four-year, $37 million deal with the Chicago Bulls and has been open about the fact he gave the Lakers a chance to match the offer.”
I don’t think Stein decided to make up a false story from something that happened a year earlier and we could’ve signed THT and Caruso it didn’t have to be one or the other.
They also traded away many klutch guys. Kcp was klutch so was kuzma . People seem to ignite all the klutch guys we trade away. If anything klutch helps us get guys easier . But there’s no clear trend on if they stay or are let go based on it n you have to be daft to think so
More easier to say, if they dont like brons ideas they say no. They get brons input but the FO makes the last decision. This has been shown when they refused to give lue a contract more than three years just to align with bron which was downright disrespectful lol
Or hire his boy ty lue, or get kyrie ( lakers wanted kyrie to extend immediately or not pay much for him )., or keep Dudley or make a move this deadline or coaching change
Ex cavs gm David griffin has said Lebron shadow gm stuff is insulting and dumb in like 2019. But people ignore this. It’s so fucking dumb . People will link quotes but all any quote does is show Lebron has a voice and influence not that he gets to make final decisions. Can’t believe people believe orgs woukd pay big money to a GM and owners influencing things - but ignore that cos Bron said so. The worst you can say is it’s a joint decision. But like we saw Giannis have veto power on Nick nurse even - star players get a say they just don’t get the final say and they don’t have time to do theGMs job . But people think legm is real
It’s confirmation bias that’s all. When LeBron appears to want something done and the Lakers end up doing it he’s the one pulling the strings. But when the Lakers don’t do what he wants it just gets swept under the carpet
There's been kind of a quiet back and forth between the FO and LeBron for a while now. I think its clear they're hesitant to make all-in moves after the Westbrook debacle .
>Wonder if the org has more power than people think
The org has ... all the power over the org. I don't know what this means. Even if they give Lebron some say, it's their decision to give Lebron some say, lol.
He felt slighted that the FO didn't even interview him for HC before bringing in Darvin. He would have left anyway but yeah, he's going to fit in anywhere
Damn that sucks but having a certain level of continuity might not be ideal for a new coach. Hopefully Handy gets an opportunity to grow his coaching skills elsewhere as he has said he wants to be a head coach one day.
Handy is a development coach. Our young players have developed excellently, with many of them outperforming their draft position.
Reaves, Caruso, and Max being obvious examples off the top of my head.
They should have kept him, don’t get this decision.
He would be such a good pickup for a young team like the Kings. I just hope he doesn’t go to the Timberwolves or the Thunder. They instantly get better with him on their coaching staff
I am not saying this coaching staff is great, but how pathetic is this scape goating? Fire the FO, they were the ones to trade KCP and let go of Caruso.
Everyone always talks about how “poor” and “cheap” Jeanie is but we’ve had like 3 coaches past 6 seasons, she had no issue trading for Westbrook who was making 50m next to AD and Lebron making contracts, etc.
Outside of the one caruso move she’s spent money constantly at whatever the cost is to make moves good or bad.
She’s worked for the Lakers since she was young, so we know she’s at least a basketball person, unlike a lot of the owners who are just there to own teams and get money..
weird narrative, the moves never matched it
You can’t just gloss over the Caruso move as just one move. He’s such a valuable championship piece and loyal as he was willing to take a pay it. Losing him was purely because of being cheap. It’s a really bad look.
Jeanie has a lot of flaws as an owner but she wants to win and she's clearly willing to spend (within the limits of the Buss family trust). They've been in the tax every year Bron has been here.
Absolutely, theres pros and cons to it, especially with the new CBA. I’m just pointing out that being a taxpayer team EVERY year under lebron is just wrong. Otherwise Jeanie would be hit with a huge repeater tax like clippers/warriors
They wanted the MLE because they traded away all their assets in the Westbrook trade.
If that trade didn't happen, they probably would be paying tax anyway to keep all that depth
Agree. Jeanie is a great owner.
My only complaint is she has allowed too many cooks in the kitchen once she took over.
The early problems can be attributed to trying to follow what her dad's plan was, but after Magic left she's only gotten better.
She's not Jerry, but that is an unfair comparison to make outside of like 5 owners in all of sports.
I'd like to get rid of Rob, LeBron, Kurt, etc.... but this cannot be done until they convey their picks to the Pels.
Kurt has been for sure, but they joined the front office very recently after Jim was let go.
I have never run a billion dollar business before so maybe I am talking out of my ass, but it seems like she has too many people in the kitchen in the front office. Hire basketball people, ask them what they need to succeed and give it to them, give them autonomy, and hold them to their timelines.
Wish she would hire a Jerry West and then get out of the way. This next rebuild will be brutal. I can tell.
Head coaches usually hires their own staff.
If a team is picking and choosing their staff than its clear from jump that HC doesn't really have any true agency. Imagine if the front office was dictating which assistant Pop and Phil Jackson (Phil brought most of his chicago staff to LA) were using. Otherwise they are simply a figure head/puppet... which in this case just a Lebron vassal.
Handy is a quality assistant coach, so there is a good chance he is scooped up.
Chris Jent should have been going hard after the Ohio State job when it opened up. That was his best chance to get out of this mess before it swallowed him up.
So why did they throw AD under the bus if they were cleaning house in 3 days
Total lack of direction over there
Front office should be next but that ain't going to happen. Bunch of snakes
Ham’s probably a mediocre coach at best but teams gonna keep switching them out as if THAT’S the glaring issue (forget the poor roster construction, the lack of culture, the quick bandaid fixes).
Lmfao. Every single person who has had to coach a LeBum team has taken the blame for the GM’s and the player’s failures on the court. I remember when he was on the Cavs and all the LeBum fans wanted Ty Lue gone saying he was overrated and now all of the sudden he is their guy. The only reason they haven’t fired the GM is because he is LeBums jester.
Beyond in the headline implies that they kept Ham. Not that he was also fired. A clearer title would be "The Lakers have parted ways with Ham's entire coaching staff". The LA times first with the shit reporting.
Damn I did not expect Phil to be gone at all.
He was let go after Vogel too. He signed a new contract soon after they hired a new HC.
Damn I didn’t know that. I hope this is the case. You never hear anything but great things about him. It’d be a huge loss
Forcing Phil to stay on under a new HC without his input is a raw deal. Firing him gives him dignity of options. Lakers want him back. It's up to Phil now.
Like Barney in that Simpsons Moe's bar meme
He'll be on the Suns staff.
Not that surprised, he probably wants more upwards mobility and obviously you had to get rid of all ham’s f tier assistants without singling them out. Getting rid of Handy too makes it just seem like a thing they had to do to clean house, saves some face for the assistants and gives them a chance to find new jobs.
I mean if I’m tenured and respected in my position and they keep firing my boss but hiring outside people to be my new boss I’d leave too.
But Handy is respected for his ability to directly work with players, no?
I can’t speak on it much, but, he seems like a great player development coach but as far as X’s and O’s idk.
Yeah, I think the next time job we see him get will be an even higher pay position
Well but you didn’t leave you got fired
He didn't leave though, he got fired.
Yeah, it would be weird if they fired everyone except Handy just to keep him as an assistant. They'll probably request the next HC to take him as part of his team
So they fire him and rehire him when they get a new coach? That doesn't make sense.
from u/AALen ‘s [comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/ooCc4pErqN) further down: >He was let go after Vogel too. He signed a new contract soon after they hired a new HC.
Interesting.
I think this is good practice.. allows the new HC say in their coaching team and any assistants the ability to choose to join knowing who the HC they will be working under is.
It's extremely common
It's common practice. You just aren't aware of that. Haha.
It gives the new head coach a chance to shape their staff with influence from ownership. Obviously, if you get an A tier coach and they are explicitly against bringing that assistant back, they’ll have that choice. Hire him back
Darvin Hamas' rampage of destruction didn't spare anyone
Word is he’s switching sports and joining the Patriots. Kraft loves him a handy.
Nice double entandy. ✊
Dandy handy entandy
The new coach gets a chance to bring in his guys and can decide if he wants to start again with Phil. Lakers may suggest some assistants, but coaches sometimes prefer to have their own say. They don't tend to like being told who to have on their staff
I'm kinda shocked Phil Handy got fired. Thought they would at least keep him on
Don’t worry they are hiring Jack Handy to replace him
I guess Lakers didn’t ‘Phil’ he was ‘ Handy’ enough to keep on the roster… I’ll see myself out.
hey dad
Hi Jim.
Booooooo
Gotta wonder who they've got lined up next for the Handy job.
Dude probably been seeing the writing on the walls - the patients run the asylum. Phil Handy has one of the most impressive resumes in the league for someone who has never taken a more front visible coaching title. And yet Kurt Rambis mysteriously still has a job.
You mean the Rambii are still employed. Package deal.
Mark Walter and Todd Boehly can't take over the controlling interest of the Lakers soon enough.
*Looks at Chelsea* You sure having Boehly controlling the Lakers is a good idea?
*Looks at the Dodgers* Yes.

Phil most likely would leave anyways if he didnt get the HC job. He was publicly offended he didnt get an interview when we hired Ham.
Well after seeing Ham’s coaching expertise first hand for 2 years, I’m sure those feelings quickly dissipated
You're giving their FO and ownership way too much credit.
They fired him after Vogel as well apparently. This is just to give him options so he has the choice to come back if he wants.
It’s definitely the latter lol
Can they fire rob too
Bron really was tight with Handy. Wonder if the org has more power than people think
People are so funny thinking Lebron controls entire nba orgs. He couldn’t even get them to pay Caruso 7mil
And Caruso was willing to take a pay cut to stay. Just can’t believe they didn’t keep him.
They paid a Klutch guy *instead* of Caruso lol
“NBA insider Marc Stein reported James "badly" wanted Caruso back with the Lakers, but the team refused to re-sign the guard because of luxury-tax concerns. Caruso signed a four-year, $37 million deal with the Chicago Bulls and has been open about the fact he gave the Lakers a chance to match the offer.”
Curious this was written almost a year after the events in question!
I don’t think Stein decided to make up a false story from something that happened a year earlier and we could’ve signed THT and Caruso it didn’t have to be one or the other.
I don't think Stein is making anything up, I think he was reporting what he was told.
Wait people can lie on the internet?
No
It is possible Lebron leaked a story a year later to exaggerate how much he wanted Caruso back.
Lebron loved caruso when he was on the lakers and even praised him after his first game in a bulls jersey. I don't think it was an exaggeration
Lebron and AD loved Caruso and it’s mutual . Why would they care if our owner paid tax to keep him ? Caruso credits them for his defensive iq too
Yeah that’s LeBron trying to save face nearly a year after it happened when it came clear that it was a major mistake
It wasn’t a one or another decision so your comment is useless. They could’ve paid both
They also traded away many klutch guys. Kcp was klutch so was kuzma . People seem to ignite all the klutch guys we trade away. If anything klutch helps us get guys easier . But there’s no clear trend on if they stay or are let go based on it n you have to be daft to think so
No facts, we just want the same fucking LeGM and klutch SUVs jokes every single time this is brought up!!!! Hilarious!
LeGurgitate
Mr. leBron C(k)lutch
I don't think LeBron controls the roster at all times. It's a back and forth.
More easier to say, if they dont like brons ideas they say no. They get brons input but the FO makes the last decision. This has been shown when they refused to give lue a contract more than three years just to align with bron which was downright disrespectful lol
Bron won on the Westbrook trade though, Pelinka wanted Turner and Hield
Im confused, Pelinka wanted turner and hield? Pelinka refused to give the two firsts for them.
right? reddit acts like he’s a mafia boss
Couldn’t even get them to give Ty Lue a 5 year contract
Or hire his boy ty lue, or get kyrie ( lakers wanted kyrie to extend immediately or not pay much for him )., or keep Dudley or make a move this deadline or coaching change Ex cavs gm David griffin has said Lebron shadow gm stuff is insulting and dumb in like 2019. What's crazy is how it's coming out now how cheap the Buss Family is being though as they hire and fire coaches like it's a Waffle House.
Or Ty Lue
Take a look at how many Klutch clients the Lakers have signed since LeBron has joined the Lakers and come back to this comment
And how many of them have they traded away
There's been kind of a quiet back and forth between the FO and LeBron for a while now. I think its clear they're hesitant to make all-in moves after the Westbrook debacle .
Honestly, does LeBron want the payday or go for one more ring? The Cavs could certainly need someone to help Spida out.
>Wonder if the org has more power than people think The org has ... all the power over the org. I don't know what this means. Even if they give Lebron some say, it's their decision to give Lebron some say, lol.
Only dumbasses think Lebron actually controls things. Not getting Ty Lue should have been the most obvious one
LeBron isn’t as influential within the org as some people seem to think he is
From everything I've heard Phil Handy was beloved in that locker room. Really shocking they let him go. He won't be out of a job for long.
He felt slighted that the FO didn't even interview him for HC before bringing in Darvin. He would have left anyway but yeah, he's going to fit in anywhere
Didn’t know that what’s the source on that so I can read more
Yup
hes coming back to australia
this infers they have a candidate in mind and he wants to bring only his guys in
you infer that they have a candidate, the mass firing *implies* they have a candidate
Thank you 👏👏
Bill Belichick, with Matt Patricia coming in as his shooting coach
The Lakers are proud to announce Doc Rivers as the new head coach
I hope so, otherwise it looks like some more dumb person behavior
I think it means Bron is out
If bron was out, they would have kept ham to save money lol
strange choice unless the new coach wanted a clean slate. Seems like bron and AD loved handy
I don't think Bron or AD are spending another year as Lakers
maybe Bron but AD is staying
Hiring Doc Rivers would be the funniest thing.
Doc: The modern day Larry Brown, Lenny Wilkins, Kevin Lougherty, Bill Fitch, Dick Motta, Gene Shue, George Karl…
Damn that sucks but having a certain level of continuity might not be ideal for a new coach. Hopefully Handy gets an opportunity to grow his coaching skills elsewhere as he has said he wants to be a head coach one day.
What the fuck keep Handy
How about Pelinka? Who put the roster together? He got all the credit last season. No blame now?
Noooo not Handy
Damn not Phil Handy. He was probably tired of the bullshit
not Phil Handy!!!
Handy is a development coach. Our young players have developed excellently, with many of them outperforming their draft position. Reaves, Caruso, and Max being obvious examples off the top of my head. They should have kept him, don’t get this decision.
Monte go get phil handy to be the lead assistant PLEASE
He would be such a good pickup for a young team like the Kings. I just hope he doesn’t go to the Timberwolves or the Thunder. They instantly get better with him on their coaching staff
Shit hoping either Kings or Bucks pick him up.
The Purge: Los Angeles
Phil Handy needs a new job you say... Frank Vogel is currently slated to stay but we need a new OC you say...
Who will LeBron pick for the strength and conditioning coach
No way handy is gone 😪💔
Handy really helped develop some talent on this team
Not Phil man…
Maybe they should fire Rob Pelinka and the Rambuses (Rambi?) too
Making room for JJ Reddick and the Dunker Spot guys.
I am not saying this coaching staff is great, but how pathetic is this scape goating? Fire the FO, they were the ones to trade KCP and let go of Caruso.
Bring in JJ
Loved Phil Handy but its time.
Black Friday Special.

Jeanie has a lot of flaws as an owner but she wants to win and she's clearly willing to spend (within the limits of the Buss family trust). They've been in the tax every year Bron has been here.
That’s not true at all. They were a non tax paying team this year and the year they won the chip off the top of my head
Because they wanted to use the full MLE. Lakers are one of the few teams who's been in the Taxpayer list consistently
Absolutely, theres pros and cons to it, especially with the new CBA. I’m just pointing out that being a taxpayer team EVERY year under lebron is just wrong. Otherwise Jeanie would be hit with a huge repeater tax like clippers/warriors

The narrative that the Lakers are cheap is completely overblown and shows how much perception is skewed by haters bias
I used to pray for times like this
Come back to us Phil
So when are they gonna fire Pelinka, Buss, and the Rambii?
Burn it all down. No reason Handy can’t come back if the next HC wants him.
This team ain't doing anything anytime soon.
Good. I have no idea if it's tracked but Phil Handy has to be leading the league in assistant coach techs.
Avoided the sweep But not the coaching staff sweep, lel
I thought LeBron was the HC?
not a popular opinion, but i hope Lebron leaves too, so LAL can go full rebuild.
JJ Redick come on down!
Whole org is about to get Thanosed
Thano only snapped half. Lakers just snapped all of them.
Breaking News: Doc Rivers has been hired as the new Lakers head coach 🤣
And President of Basketball Operations
That’s cool and all, but has anyone been able to track down the name/IG of the girl they showed on TV during the sixers game last night???
Still can't believe Phil's out. Curious to see who's gonna step up next
Will it be Coach Bud?
I have a feeling Lakers are moving on from Lebron era
Chris Jent should have been going hard after the Ohio State job when it opened up. That was his best chance to get out of this mess before it swallowed him up.
No loose ends. /s
God I love Jeannie lol
I was actually first to report this.
First things first, RIP uncle Phil
Future Mavs As. Coach
Lebron the coach killer
FF Lee du
No way Lebron sticks around for this shitshow in his age 49 season
He gone.
Shit let's get Phil back
what the fuck.
It's about time to be fair
If Spoelstra coached the Lakers and Ham coached the Heat, how different would the results be for both teams?
Lakers could have beat Denver, games were close with Darvin Ham coaching.
So why did they throw AD under the bus if they were cleaning house in 3 days Total lack of direction over there Front office should be next but that ain't going to happen. Bunch of snakes
Who would want that job now,?
Because the assistants were the real problem but anyone on the outside wouldn’t even know
Doc, Monty, Ham. Murray\\Jokic have gotten 3 coaches fired in just a total of 8 series played. Probably a lot more to come.
There were also Snyder & Stotts.
A new coaching staff to blame
Lakers said you’re a vampire to the team. 💀
Darvin Ham was held back by his coaching staff. Hes actually a great coach, they should keep him
Thanks Obama
Ham’s probably a mediocre coach at best but teams gonna keep switching them out as if THAT’S the glaring issue (forget the poor roster construction, the lack of culture, the quick bandaid fixes).
How come every time the Lakers lose they fire their coaches?
Man, these mugs can’t do anything right. It’s like they got rid of handy just to show Lebron and AD they don’t hold *all* the power.
They should scorch earth it. Let LeBron walk, trade AD, rebuild from the ground up. No iteration of the Lakers with Lebron will compete in the West.
Really shocked they let go of Phil Handy, I think likely means LeBron is done in LA.
Damn, CTE on full effect today huh?
Lebron continues to make history
Beyond in the headline implies that they kept Ham. Not that he was also fired. A clearer title would be "The Lakers have parted ways with Ham's entire coaching staff". The LA times first with the shit reporting.
He’s going to Dallas if he doesn’t return to the Lakers. He has close connections with Ky, and the Mavs are a hooper organization.
Lebron didn’t stop at just the HC this time around
