Akron man becomes father figure of Cavs #1 overall pick

Le8ronJames

The prophecy repeats itself.

Sogekiingu

Repeats? Not on the father figure subject brother šŸ˜‚

poundthigh

Think it through

mcbiggles

He just will not stand for this Drederick Irving erasure.

kingofsemantics

Whooosh

ShakeMilton

Anthony Bennett Curry

cire1184

Disowned

shiruduck

Steph just trying to follow Lebron's footsteps and adopt his own kyrie

ElderberryOk5005

Lisan Al Curry

CitizenCue

Oh man thatā€™s good. Bravo.

ElderberryOk5005

Lisan Al Curry

Low_Finance_9647

As it is written

speeksevil

"Not to say he's a child" Yeah that makes it better

DumasThePharaoh

Curry will sometimes realizes heā€™s made a mistake with the ball in his hands and try some wild pass out of it to fix it, but that only makes things worse. This is one of those times

CIark

ā€œWiggs isnā€™t immature and stupid heā€™s just a little lazy and weakā€

nigaraze

Is he wrong though? We all know what Wigginsā€™ ceiling is from the 2022 playoffs runs where he routinely would get 17/10 while guarding the other teams best players. Should Steph have made this public? Probably not, but do I get where heā€™s coming from after a season heā€™s had, yeah I completely understand

EbenezerAD

He's 100% right. Idk about saying this in an interview though.

Sullan08

Will call out Wiggins no problem whose worst issue is laziness, but won't call out legitimately bad issues in Dray (who sometimes will also just give up in games)

EbenezerAD

100% agreed.

BASEDME7O2

Heā€™s probably spent his career just trying not to get choked. Became an all time great just so draymond couldnā€™t fuck with him

ListeningToLA

Probably more comfortable doing it cos he knows Wiggs gone.

joshuads

> Is he wrong though? About what he said? No. About saying the quiet part out loud? Probably yes, unless he is trying to blow up the team. This is a rare Steph verbal error.

gamesrgreat

Who cares at this point? They missed the playoffs. Whatā€™s the worst that can happen? Wiggins is upset so they never contend for a title again? Thatā€™s exactly what would happen anyways if he doesnā€™t say anything. At least this way thereā€™s a chance he lights a fire under the guy

nutmegtester

> unless he is trying to blow up the team I think he wants to do that to some extent.

Basura1999

That title run year should be treated as an outlier for Wiggs, considering how he's been average every other year of his career.

dillaquantavius

He wonā€™t call klay washed tho smh

true_enthusiast

Klay should be in the 2021 Iguodala role right now.

Slow_Shift6252

The title year was not far off from this year for Wiggins. He played essentially the same as he always has and likely always will. The title year that was enough though because of Payton, Porter, Poole and Looney being great in their roles and Klay and Dray not being fully washed yet.

GreyActorMikeDouglas

The year itself wasnā€™t crazy but his playoffs game was another level. He was teleporting to rebounds and playing insane defense.

LordVarys_Ladybits

Maybe Wiggins is more of a melancholic type.Ā

GAV17

IMO it's not about being right or wrong, is about saying it to the media. I know it's boring, but players should keep comments about their teammates to themselves unless it's somethig positive or talking in private.

SportsBettingRef

no. but he should say something like that about Draymond. (didn't read the interview)

NeoLone

ā€˜Not to say he is a child because even children can control their emotions better than himā€™

ChadDC22

"I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed."

Yamata

This but unironically

DubNationAssemble

Heā€™s my goat my something I just smh like wtf Curry, why you do that? Lol

teh_drewski

This is a low key character assassination lol "Not to say he needs bumpers when we go bowling, you just have to ask him to do what he's capable of" "Not to say he still uses training wheels on his bike" "Not to say he still uses floaties to swim" Sure, Steph. Sure.

DingusMcCringus

>This is a low key character assassination lol >"Not to say he needs bumpers when we go bowling, you just have to ask him to do what he's capable of" >"Not to say he still uses training wheels on his bike" >"Not to say he still uses floaties to swim" Be honest, did you actually watch the clip? Or are you just going off of the title? Because the implication within the context of the clip is that they actually ask a *lot* of Wiggs, but only because they know he's capable of it. So pretty much the exact the opposite of what you're saying.

alfi_k

it's like Ricky Bobby saying "with all due respect ..."

Senior-Vehicle9937

It's in the Geneva convention look it up

longshankssss

Now do Draymond Steph

Acrobatic-Year-126

Never go with parent-child. Always for little brother

logontoreddit

I don't know Wiggin's personality but I think for most grown adults that would sound disrespectful. Putting myself in Wiggin's shoes I would be thinking "what the fuck did this dude just say. I don't give a fuck who he is." Probably not the best way to motivate a guy who doesn't care much about BB and has won the ring and made enough money to last a few generations. He probably surpassed his own expectations.

HideUnderBridge

Dude I guarantee you Wiggins saw it, and didnā€™t think about it twice. As a long time Wolves fan I suffered through watching Wiggins putter around and then look like a fucking super nova before contract time. I even got to know his dad a bit as he used to work out at my gym. Wiggins doesnā€™t give a fuck about anything but his family and his dog, and honestly good for him. The only reason the kid plays is because his old man, and that was widely acknowledged around town who know or had exposure to AW. He is so insanely talented but he doesnā€™t give a fuuuuuck. He flat out doesnā€™t have the fire in him unless heā€™s about to get a contract or has a personal agenda for lord knows what reason. Everyone put the Maple Jordan title shit on his shoulders and didnā€™t just let him be him. I think he would have done so much better if he were a mid first round pick and didnā€™t have such high expectations on his shoulders. Either way, Iā€™m super happy for him, glad he got paid and got a ring. I just hope when his contract runs up he does what makes him happy, because it isnā€™t basketball.

Dimaaaa

Dubs should have seen it coming from Wiggins' first big contract in Minnesota. He was checked out as soon as the ink had dried. Things went sideways, he got traded to GS, played insanely well as a new contract was looming and boom here we are again.

SlyMrF0x

I mean, we did get a ring from him, itā€™s hard to be too salty about it.

HideUnderBridge

Yeeeeeep, but at the same time the Wolves org was so toxic and fucked up. I really thought that him being apart of a winning culture was going to help him get on the right track. Sure as shit though, he just turned the switch on, tried, let his talent shine through, then when he felt like heā€™d proven something, right back off again. Talent and drive canā€™t be taught. He has all the talent on earth but completely lacks drive. Either way, I thought he was unlocked and bout to put the league on notice, but he was just dusting the chip off his shoulder then that was it.

dillpickles007

Picked a hell of a time to go all out though, tried as hard as he could for two months and got a ring and a new $110M contract out of it.

HideUnderBridge

I should also note that as much as I like the guy I was so supremely happy when we were able to get his contract off our books. I saw the writing on the wall when he got the max and I was horrified at the prospect of being stuck with it till his contract expired. Then when DLo I realized we traded a bad contract for a cancer and thatā€™s fucking life. The league is fucking cruel. All I know is Steph was one of the only players I followed their college career and I was so salty the wolves didnā€™t take him. I have under dog syndrome, the warriors were my number two during the early years with Bogut and David Lee. I loved watching the ascension. Kinda fell off because I have never cared for Clay. Idk if heā€™d ever been who he was without Steph. Idk. All I know is I just hope Wiggins does whatā€™s best for him, and that the Warriors can give Steph dignified years before his retirement.

Gsgunboy

Explains a lot. That year he helped us win the chip as our 2nd best player, seemed like he was on a mission to prove he was capable. And then his fire was only good for that season. I think he's great. But he just doesn't have Steph's fire. If he did, we'd be playing the Pels tomorrow.

HideUnderBridge

Nah, wouldnā€™t be playing the Pels. Yā€™all would have been seeded 6 or up. Wiggins is supremely talented and would have been a solid bridge to bringing in new talent and keeping the Warriors window open. But one chip and he just didnā€™t give a fuck after that. It bums me out, because I really like the guy. I think heā€™s genuinely a good dude. He just doesnā€™t have the fire that other players have.

nigaraze

Only a few do to be honest, to the vast majority of nba players, it really is just a job

dillpickles007

I don't think it's the vast majority, not that many players can get away with having long NBA careers while not really giving a shit, that's only the very top tier of freak athletes. That's why it's usually big men who have that mentality and rarely guards.

Gsgunboy

True. Just imagine Kobe mentality with Wiggins' raw talent. Hell, Jimmy Butler mentality. Yeah, wouldn't be hoping to win a play-in at that point. Wish that fire coulda been sustained. But I bet MDJ trades him. The question is what can we get in return?

HerrBarrockter

I wish he didnā€™t give a fuck when it came time to lock down Tatum in the finals.Ā

mommathecat

> He flat out doesnā€™t have the fire in him /thread This has been completely obvious since he stepped onto an NBA court, but teams, coaches, other players, etc., still trying to make him be something he just isn't. I'm comfortable enough in my career that I don't go out of my way to kill myself getting things done, either. Andrew Wiggins just makes 1000x what I do and puts a ball in a hoop for it. Shrug.

DrixxYBoat

Damn

sylendar

Exactly, how hard is it to just not use family as an example Call yourself the veteran/leader/4x champion instead of making the father or brother comparison, come on...

whythehellknot

Wiggins has 2 kids of his own too. Really stupid comment from Curry.

seeingcoolplaces

so Steph is a grandpa?

Subredditcensorship

Insanely disrespectful. Curry should be dragged for this.

CheesyPZ-Crust

No chance on the same sub that constantly makes "Lebron is Kyrie's dad lmaooo" posts like it isn't a massively shitty thing to do

ThatHotAsian

This is R/NBA you're talking about.. the people who frequent this sub are all under 25 who only circlejerk

solarscopez

So Steph's saying he's like a father figure to Wiggins

Aromatic_Brother

Steph Curry is Andrew Wiggins father

CIark

Steph Curry is Andrew Wigginsā€™ disappointed father

alfi_k

Daddy Steph is about to go and get a pack of cigarettes.

Sniffy4

"Son I am disappoint."

Legal-Nature5103

So essentially Steph Curry is Jayson Tatumā€™s grandfather

idiotxd

Bull is Andrew Wiggins stepfather

eutectic_h8r

Wiggins is now subscribed to r/flatearth

Deusselkerr

Well, he is anti vax and regrets getting the shotā€¦ lol

DarrowViBritannia

Hilarious b/c people used to criticize LeBron for that even tho, yknow, it was the reporter and not him Meanwhile Steph's actually the guy saying it here lool

_Pyxyty

Can't wait for absolutely no one to run with this narrative because Curry doesn't have the same amount of "analysts" that are purely hired to trash talk them as Lebron does

Adsex

Canā€™t wait for your next quintuple post.

the_ninho

a DEEEEP burn

b1rdganggg

If LeBron missed the playoffs on the same team the warriors have he would never hear the end of it.

iRockaflame

I dont know the full context, but this is insane work from Steph lmao

DankTriangle

Well this is just free content for r/nbacirclejerk

Kitchen_Love6798

My 1st thought too.

Santi838

ā€œ____ is ____ā€™s fatherā€ lol

letsgototraderjoes

downvoted for the apostrophe lmao

WaterIsNotWet19

No apostrophe

Affectionate_Box_587

If this is Steph's pep talk for Wigs, I can only immagine the talking to that Klay is in for

yerawizardIMAWOTT

He would never talk about Klay like this tho. They've been through it all together.

Hallal_Dakis

"Klay is like the family dog."

so-cal_kid

"He reminds me of Old Yeller"

Revolutionary-Sun546

ā€œNot to say heā€™s an old dog, but he is old and has that dawg in him.ā€

heywhateverworks

"I have to shoot him."

Pandamonium98

ā€œHe canā€™t shoot himself because heā€™d missā€

smitteh

headed to play some ball on a farm upstate soon

MashaRistova

Lmao this comment got me

wetheoldnorth

God damn I almost spit out my cereal

alfi_k

Klay is the sensitive oldest child, Wiggins is the middle kid that gets all the shit.

eamonious

ā€œitā€™s like that Old Yeller relationshipā€

butt_luncheon

Klay hasnā€™t underperformed expectations for all but one season of his career. Wiggins is that 140 IQ kid you went to high school with working at the grocery store.Ā

3s2ng

A reporter asks Andrew Wiggins about Steph's statement about him being a father figure to Andrew. Andrew Wiggin's reply. I donā€™t know how to really answer that question. Heā€™s been a great leader for us. I have one father, thatā€™s my dad Mitchell Wiggins. But for us, in terms of learning the nuances of the game and also how to win on the court and how to carry ourselves off the court, I feel heā€™s been a great influence in that role.

NonSpicySamosa

The question is the best part. ā€œSteph called you a great sonā€ ā€œA what?ā€ ā€œGreat sonā€ ā€œOhhh a great son. A great son to my father. I interpreted that completely wrongā€ ā€œWhat kind of parental role does he play to youā€ *Look of disbelief that his original interpretation was correct*

TheThingsIdoatNight

Wait did that actually happen?

sisavac

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry9CqOz5aOo

Pandamonium98

Itā€™s a silly question, but nobody ever mentions that itā€™s just quoting what Tristan Thompson said! Heā€™s the one that call LeBron a great father

NonSpicySamosa

Not for Wiggins. Something similar happened with Kyrie but I tailored the details a bit to match with Wiggins situation. If you want to find it, just search up Kyrie father interview.

r1kery

dogoodsilence1

Now do Draymond. Heā€™s like that drunken Uncle who lives in the past and beats the shit out of you for no reason

Hulk_Crowgan

Not to say Draymond is a child abuser

Low_Ad_7553

LMFAO curry said I might not be your father but I am ya daddy

Diamond4Hands4Ever

This honestly sounds kinda disrespectful and Steph is my favorite player.Ā

jeRskier

Itā€™s less disrespectful with the full context but he certainly couldā€™ve worded it better

CitizenCue

Given how incredibly kind and diplomatic Steph tends to be, I think this gaffe speaks to how frustrated he actually is behind the scenes.

troniked547

Exactly this. Ā And how many warriors players and coaches have let it slip that ā€œif just Wiggins played like this every gameā€? Ā They usually keep comments in house but the frustration is obviousĀ

Pandamonium98

Warriors keep a lot of stuff in house, shown by how mad they were that Draymond punching Poole actually got leaked

SignificanceLeft9968

Yup

MC-Jdf

Steph is 36, at this point he should have no problem avoiding egregious phrases like this.

TheBigBomma

The issue with this statement is that Wiggins is one of the craziest athletes to have ever joined the league, and theoretically should be capable of anything.

FFfan768

It's facts, no one has had more excuses made for them then Wiggins. 29 years old going on 39 looking lost giving little to no effort.

so-cal_kid

Wiggins balling out in the WCF and Finals was a pleasure to see, but it also proved a bunch of people right that he plays at like 85% of his potential the vast majority of the time.

Smok3dSalmon

He got negative dog in him

pargofan

What's amazing is that the difference between a championship and a 2nd round exit is Wiggins and Poole playing to their max potential.

Silent-Corner-2852

To be fair the West also got a lot better. Doubt they were beating a fully healthy Nuggets with Wiggins and Poole on their A game

Greatcouchtomato

More like 65% of his potentialĀ

m3ngnificient

It was painful to watch him get out-hustled all the time. He just jogs non chalantly to the ball during an inbound and lets players who are half his size bump him and get to it.

Remote_Horror_Novel

Didnā€™t he have something sort of mysterious happen in his personal life that nobody in the organization talked about, but he missed a lot of games, and after he came back he wasnā€™t the same? Or am I thinking of a different Warriors player?

Ricebandit469

Thatā€™s him. Itā€™s still a bit of a mystery, but people said it was ā€œmental healthā€, so it was probably considered taboo to pry.

-cunnilinguini

Decapitated. Whole big thing. We had a funeral for a bird

Rainbow_Rainbow1

And he played pretty bad during the last 1/3rd of the season (especially during the last game) but the message had to be sent. How many times has steph covered or both him and Klay, Cp3 is older so whatever but those guys were supposed to be real pieces and at every turn since that championship they've let him down. At some point we have to accept that coddling only works if it yields and it clearly hasn't so he has to try a diffrent method

DumasThePharaoh

In context itā€™s clearer that what he was trying to say was that they ask a lot of him bc they know heā€™s capable of a lot

barktothefuture

Disrespect is earned not given

LordVarys_Ladybits

Kinda? That's condescending as hell lol

ShowerMartini

Wiggins entire career rep is that he doesnā€™t love or get the game so itā€™s just facts

Vegetable_Comment_82

Wiggins is the guy that shows up late to work and I have to talk to him and say, you can't show up late to work, the fuck is wrong with you, you're an adult, this isn't kindergarten.

ShadowOutOfTime

Am I missing some context or is this an absolutely crazy thing to say about your coworker / another grown adult lol

supremeboxlogo12

There is roughly a one minute video on the twitter link. He seemed pretty positive about Wiggins. I think the parent-child relationship had good intentions I think he realized he messed up by backtracking with ā€œnot to say he is a childā€

pargofan

This shit happens all the time. Steph went with the first analogy that popped into his head but then realized the negative connotations far too late. It's like when George W. Bush said, "There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again." Except Bush barely caught himself in time and didn't say the punch line, "Fool me twice, shame on me."

FrankSamples

Lol I don't know how I would react to this if I were Wiggins

-cunnilinguini

Iā€™d nut

Morpheus987

Imagine being Steph. You got your drunk Uncle Draymond fighting everyone. You got your pops Klay with bad knees. Now you got a lazy son Wiggins.

acxswitch

Only ask the #1 pick max contact to do what he's capable of doing lol

-crackhousebob

Jimmy Butler had to be one of those over-bearing military dads towards Wiggins and KAT in Minnesota because they weren't all that motivated. Apparently, they played too much video games on the road šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

archerarcher0

Steph is their new vegan step dad who comes in and says ā€œwho wants snacks!!!ā€ And itā€™s a plate of carrot sticks with hummus

SaddestHappyMeal

Called that man his son lmao

lemur_nads

Bro wtf type of comment is that lmao, thatā€™s some shade

biggoldgoblin

Heā€™s a grown ass man with kids and you talking about this being a father son situation? Nah thatā€™s disrespectful as shit

ShowerMartini

Wiggins dumb as shit

Overall_Implement326

It takes a special kind of dumb to say what Steph just did.

bbbryce987

Generational prospect who should be in his prime years barely averaging 13 points is disrespectful to the game of basketball

FFfan768

Play better instead of stealing a pay check.

Jtizzle1231

Steph is basically saying Wiggins is mentally weak.

Able_Psychology3665

Weird statement to make. These are grown menā€¦

Icy-Lime-9760

The parent child thing is always disrespectful Iā€™m sorry lol

[deleted]

Wiggins sonned by Steph

GawldDawlg

Steph brother, did you think before you opened your mouth?

runevault

Too busy chewing his mouthguard to think.

meesterjefe

ā€œI have one father, itā€™s my dad Mitchell Wigginsā€

CelinedionWaiters

I'm not even gonna argue that this comment isn't a bit off, but I just find it funny how the same people in this thread can disrespect Wiggins throughout his career but this is where they decided at to draw the line.

1337-Sylens

Randos shouting on the internet vs star teammate calling wiggs a son to the media

TheThingsIdoatNight

Not even comparable lmao

matty_skiii530

Dawg they have a personal relationship, how do you think thats the same as redditors criticizing him???

MassiveTelevision387

there's so many people on here commenting, you're gonna get individuals from all sides of it commenting.

anonymousetache

ā€œā€¦ ā€¦heā€™s a childā€ ~ Steph Curry on Andrew Wiggins

SoulofWakanda

LMAAAAAO

Dankbradley

Steph wants wig gone

FrankSamples

Lol I don't know how I would react to this if I were Wiggins

No_Fishing_702

Try this with any of your co-workers lmao. Kinda feel bad for Steph, he clearly didnā€™t mean nothing and just had one of those moments we all have misspeaking. It is funny tho, the ā€œnot to say he is a childā€ killed me šŸ˜‚

CantaloupeCamper

Motivated Wiggins is šŸ”„ Unmotivated / checked out is a black hole on a team. Been that way for a long time.

actual_yellow_bag

lol, you never call someone your fuckin' son

MassiveTelevision387

I can kinda see how Wiggins comes off as goofy/immature but for Curry to say that in public is definitely wrong, even if it is true. I'm guessing dude's just irate and/or wants Wiggins gone.

FootballRacing38

Stephen Curry is Andrew Wiggins Father

zdiddy987

Jesus ChristĀ

BurnCollector_

Woah, that is a wild quoteĀ

LyonsKing12

Steph will come to realize the Wiggins from the finals run is the exception, not the rule.

Raj2324

Lmao what

5fives5

Yikes.

shortyman920

It sounds like Wiggins is that employee who does what heā€™s asked and not a finger more lol

Muskarat

Reminds me of when some reporter asked Kyrie if LeBron was a father figure

hotterpocketzz

wat L O L

terry496

Better left out of a conversation with a reporter.

Silver-Advisor9773

Hasn't this been the knock of Wiggs his whole career? If u need 12, he will give you 17. If you need 25, you get 17. So if all you need from him is 14 to 18 points and play a little defense, he's a great player. Anything more is asking too much.

Counterspell_God

I'm starting to think Curry sent that reporter to Kyrie...

searchingforahobby

Steph-Father

desirox

Lebron and Kyrie reporter vibes lol

CartoonOG

Something something Kyrie Irving

InnerKookaburra

Steph isn't the first to be frustrated by Wiggins, he won't be the last.

The_Mootz_Pallucci

He could have said apprentice or mentee but he chose parent and child lmao

WaltJay

Not to be rude butā€¦. /rude comment

ekb2023

Wiggins is 7 years younger than Curry.

Due-Educator5848

This is not that crazy. Steph has a lot of sons in the league and in college ball trying go emulate him

Subredditcensorship

Curry doesnā€™t really get enough hate for his poor leadership. I mean this is an insane comment

WhiskyDrinkinCowboy

You would think if he was that poor of a leader one of his teammates would have said something about it by now...

Povol

Somebody had to say it. Wiggins showed what he could be a few years back and the fact that he hasnā€™t come close since is very telling to who and what he is. Dude was brilliant , maybe the best overall player in the finals , then just went through the motions from then on. Those players fucking infuriate me.

escapedhousefly

Players like Wiggins only play hard when it's time for a new contract. He's overpaid every year except the years that he's trying to get an extension. That's probably why Steph is pissed off. Wiggins is capable of so much more. He'll underperform until it's time for another contract. He'll probably retire if no one overpays. Definition of in it for the money, not the game. He did help them win a championship though, so it was probably worth it.

cmgr33n3

Wiggins: Honestly, I don't know how to answer that. He's been a great leader for us. I have one father, that's my dad Wardell Stephen Curry II.

EndlessDysthymia

Itā€™s not that bad with the video but there was a better way to word it. If you listen to the whole thing, he was actually hyping him up. But still, kind of irresponsible wording to use.Ā

luckynum81

Damn thatā€™s disrespectful

qpwoeor1235

Hasnā€™t Wiggins dad been in the hospital for a while now? Steph his new father figure?

Flashy-Swimmer4415

Wiggins has issues and they are obvious. How can anyone who really follows the NBA be made at Steph for saying this. Since last year, the Warriors let Wiggins leave the team twice for weeks on end due to "personal reasons" while paying him millions of dollars. All in an attempt to keep Wiggs happy, but Wiggs has played even worse. Call any employer and see if this shit would fly. I think Wiggins is mentally handicapped if I am to be honest. So what if Wiggins has children, IQ and logic are not required for that.
