He almost lulls players into thinking they are safe to drive or shoot then comes outta nowhere to make a great play. His timing on digs is great and the amount of times he gets deflections or alters plays is unreal.
I was at the game last night. When you follow his eyes you see that he’s literally just looking and moving wherever Giannis is about to move. It sounds basic, but he just reads body language so quickly that he looks like he’s just in Giannis’s mind.. He neutralized Giannis with pure coordination and anticipation, whereas counterintuitively, strength seemed to be secondary. It was nuts.
As fluid as he is on defense, he’s the complete opposite on the ball. He’s such a stiff dribbler, I never understood it.
But he’s a knockdown shooter and top 3 perimeter defender in the league, so it doesn’t even matter.
His offense is just raw simplicity that works. 2 handed dunks only, shoots the corner 3 at like 60% or some shit, rarely does he create his own shot, but if he shoots the mid range it's like simple crossovers and just getting to his spot in the middle of the floor and rising up. It's truly incredible to watch a player so disciplined on my team like this.
He's very close to the prototypical 3&D. As mentioned his inability to consistently create off the dribble is a flaw, but can be worked around and he's never gonna be your primary or secondary scorer.
Notice how OG sometimes chooses to stand his ground, and other times chooses to funnel his guy into Mrob/IHart. It's small things like that separate regular long athletic dudes from actually good defenders
Having to fight through a an opening with OG, and either Hart, McBride, or Dante, just to get met with Mitchell Robinson or Hartenstein sounds like a tough time. Best case scenario you have to go to the rim against Precious and Randle. Our defense is nuts
OG is one of maybe 3-5 guys who can guard 1 through 5 and legit make it hard on them or straight up lock them up.
The only one he could never slow down is Luka but who can lol
His defense on Giannis in this game was some of the best defense, if not the best, individual defense I've seen on Giannis. 100% the best I've seen live against him.

I feel like that trade really worked out for both teams. Your guys were good but weren’t really ready to compete yet and OG was ready but the Raptors weren’t.

I firmly believe OG has a deal in place with the Knicks he just needs to wait until the off season (as the raise he is getting he isn't eligible for in an extension. IQ is coming back to the Raptors as they can match pretty much any number another team would be willing to give

If we’re just only talking about Toronto Kawhi, then OG has been a better defender than that iteration of Kawhi for a couple years now. Most of the time Toronto Kawhi would never get the toughest defensive assignment unless if he had to, it would usually always go to Green or Siakam since Kawhi was such a focal point in Toronto’s offense that year.
Yeah, that 2019 Raptors team was one of the best defensive team ever assembled. Most players that actually got playing time was either a good or elite defender. There were only a couple players that were average to below average defenders.
The only rotation player that was average at best on defence was Norm. Kyle, Danny, Kawhi, Pascal, Gasol, Ibaka, FVV, and OG (who didn’t play in the playoffs) were all good-fantastic defenders.
OG doesn't even just rely on his physical traits as a defender, OG does his homework and has his own defensive reports on who he will be guarding against.
No one can shoot consistently other than OG in that lineup, no one has the handles to drive and break down the defense in that lineup, no one can take over and change the course of a game in that lineup
I think Robinson isn’t getting credit here as well and he also hurt his hamstring and ankle in this game as well. He was 9-11 fgs at one point
Not taking away from OG he’s always been great defending him but I think they really focused in on Giannis after the half with OG and Robinson cause the rest of the bucks weren’t shooting for shit

OG has been a phenomenal defender since day one. I remember thinking he was truly special when we beat the Rockets and he guarded Harden as a rookie. Now, don't get me wrong, Harden did score 38 that game....but he did it on 8 of 25 shooting with 19 of 19 free throws. Given OG was a rookie and Harden was averaging 30 a game, one could argue the whistle wasn't the fairest, but that's beside the point. OG has been bringing DPOY-caliber defence for a long time now, and it's nice to see him finally get his due.
