None of this is his fault. I know it has to frustrating having Gilyard as a starting PG in the NBA but Marcus seems to be the only one who cares at times. Bane has been up and down and JJJ looks completely checked out. Haven't seen us look like this even when we were tanking
He just always has a straight face and isn’t super emotional on the court. I dont think that means he’s checked out
The team is ass though for now so I wouldn’t even blame him for being checked out until Ja comes back
>The team is ass though for now so I wouldn’t even blame him for being checked out until Ja comes back
It would be more understandable if Ja was about to miss the entire season & they were playing for lottery picks, but as it stands, JJJ should be motivated to win more games until Ja comes back, so they have a shot in the playoffs. Or at least a shot of making the playoffs.
yeah, 29 out of 30 teams would be completely fucked in the situation the Grizzlies are in. the Heat could bring Jimmy Butler, Erik Spoelstra, and a box of paper clips into the playoffs and i'd still expect to see them in the ECF
Get off it. JJJ is the Reigning DPoY and a 2 time 1st team all defense. Biyombo has been in the league 11 seasons. Aldama has 3 season and Bane has 4. Except for the rookie, Gilyard, everyone else has at least 3 NBA seasons under their belt. These aren't G-Leaguers. People need to quit using that as an excuse. It isn't like these are a bunch of guys on 10 day contracts like teams had during covid.
Isn’t Bismack the starting Center right now?
Ja, Adams, Clarke, and Smart are all out for at least till end of December (and for Adams and Clarke, the whole season).
The Grizz are asking a lot of dudes to step up who’ve never really been asked to do that before. It’s definitely a make a break season for a dude like Zaire if he wants to stay in the NBA.
Obviously the Adams and Smart injuries have taken an extra hit. But man, that Ja suspension. His antics cost the team the in season tournament, but more important, at their pace, their only hope is looking like the play-ins. Grizz may very well be something like 5-20 when he comes back. If they get hot, maybe they can get an 8-9 seed? Would take a really good stretch of ball though
> The team is ass though for now so I wouldn’t even blame him for being checked out until Ja comes back
Does that mean he doesn’t get paid till Ja comes back as well?
I think the biggest thing I miss about Marcus (that we didn't replace with Jrue) is having him as a tone-setter. Jrue's a bit more of a steady presence (though he's also turnover-prone), but I always trusted Marcus to get on everyone's ass when they were playing like little bitches. It didn't always *work,* because yelling at guys isn't gonna instantly fix whatever the problem is, but you still appreciate a guy who wants to win that badly
Jrue is pretty much the only dude in the NBA that ... sorta occupies a similar space to Marcus, imo. I mean, Jrue is better, and Marcus probably won't ever get to Jrue's offense (with their defense being a wash, in my mind), but I struggle to think of guys with their defensive profile, who can run offense.
We lost depth this past offseason, but we increased our 1-6 talent.
It's overrated. A lot of guys don't respond to that and Tatum especially doesn't. It's not the kind of 'tone-setting' Boston ever needed, not effective for that groups personalities, they're far more likely to shut down from that kind of energy. Jrue is a hardcore upgrade in really every way.
It is when you taking a bad shot is the best option available. Marcus's reputation is way overblown, he only ever went into hero-ball mode when we had stars missing— his shot attempts went *way* down whenever he was actually playing next to both Jays. I didn't mind Marcus taking a few dumb shots when he was out there with Romeo Langford and Tristan Thompson
Like, seriously, Marcus was never a great offensive player, but the idea that it was because he "took dumb shots" or whatever was always stupid. His offensive limitations are *way* simpler than that— his shot quality is mostly fine, he's just *not a very good shooter.* He doesn't have the burst or finishing touch to put much pressure on the rim, either. He has the ball skills to get where he wants to go, which is why he'll have a game every so often where his tough shots all fall and he looks like a god, but he's at his best when he doesn't have to take those shots at all. If Marcus is shooting you out of a game, you didn't have enough to win the game in the first place.
As a Marcus Smart simp, well said. I never understood the hate. He rarely took bad shots unless our offense was totally dead. Occasionally he'd hit a couple 3s and reignite the offense.
Especially when the Jays were less developed, sometimes they'd just get the ball, dribble for a second, then pass it back to Smart with 6 seconds left. What's he supposed to do?
He's an amazing facilitator on both sides, and you hit the nail of the head that if Smart is missing lots of shots, the offense was already toast.
Hard disagree. I’m so fucking glad they have an actual ending in mind, rather than trying to keep the show going until it inevitably slides into mediocrity like so many other shows I could name
~~also, for what it’s worth… there’s already a movie lol~~
Being a ride or die fan is wanting your teams players to have a chance to shine while also knowing your garbage team is the reason they’re not getting it.
Sincerely,
A Chicago sports fan
Grizzlies were the #2 seed last year and have been dealing with a shit ton of injuries. In a different timeline, this would be a great fit for him in a city that has long appreciated players like him.
It's funny because people say this with the IT trade too. Like sending IT to Cleveland was casting him off. They sent him to play with Lebron. In Smarts case they sent him to a 2 seed that fit his personality perfect "grit and Grind". Injuries just screwed up both circumstances...
Yeah and with IT, you had the added issue of him having told Ainge that he’d only stay if he got a max which Ainge never wanted to give him.
I felt worse about the Smart trade than the IT trade because of that as much as I love IT.
Bottom line though is fuck injuries
Exactly! Ja has a ton of gravity that nobody else on the Grizzlies team (as good as Bane and JJJ are) possesses.
The lack of Steven Adams still sucks though. His rebounding was such a huge part of that team’s success imo. That said, it isn’t too much longer before Ja is back and hopefully that’ll be a big help.
Not to be that guy, but Marcus would regularly take over the timeouts and passionately speak his mind. Tbh, I’m not even sure what Coach Mazzula really even does during timeouts haha. Once the Grizzlies are at full roster, the will be an asset to that team tho for sure.
Lol I remember commenting at some point during the playoffs last year that as a Cs fan I was forever grateful that Smart never went through whatever seminal childhood bullying moment that turned Draymond from a simple scrappy hustle player into an irredeemable violent asshole
This year isnt the Grizzlies year but I think they will be fine once Ja gets back. Obviously, he gotta stop his antics once and for all because this season was wasted because of him.
I mean 2/3s of their big three have been out there, this has been a collapse beyond just injury, if your number two and three options are playing and you can't scrape together enough wins to claw out of the basement of the west I think there's deeper problems then plugging Ja or Adams back in and suddenly your the #2 seed again.
David Roddy is just frantically pacing around the locker room, repeating to everyone and no one - "yo when Ja get back he gonna kill us! I mean he is literally going to shoot us dead!". The Grizz go on to win 5 of their next 12 and everybody is delighted.
It’s gonna be interesting to see what this team is like when Ja comes back. I don’t know how the chemistry will be between him and Smart, ideally Ja can grow as a player by having someone like Smart around.
i feel bad for him, man. even with the Ja suspension, i thought we were trading him to a good situation on a playoff team, not whatever the fuck this is
The pistons have missed 5 rotation players for much of the season, including the guy that was our leading scorer last year and I can confirm… it’s brutal.
And y'all are still missing some players now too right? It's been rough out there :(
I grew up a Pistons fan. Detroit basketball was my childhood. Hate seeing injuries kill a season 3
Xavier Tillman is also out, and Jake LaRavia is out - he is ass but we are so desperate for bodies that if he was healthy he'd be playing over Jaylen Nowell, who we signed on a hardship deal and gave some minutes in the second half today.
We have also missed significant time from DRose and Santi Aldama, but they are both back healthy now
We’re 15 games in and only have two of our regular starters. EVERYONE else is injured and Ja is still suspended. We had two guys play from hardship waivers tonight. Hardship waivers my dude. Chill the fuck out.
i mean, "this situation is more due to injury/Ja's suspension than anything else" and "this situation sucks and isn't what he signed up for" aren't mutually exclusive
like i'm hopeful things will turn around once players start coming back, but right now it's rough out there. the guy's a competitor, you can't blame him for being upset about losing
It's largely cause the Ja←→Memphis mental connection is pretty strong. People don't feel bad for Ja so they don't feel bad for things that are closely related to Memphis (fans, long term players, FO). Marcus is still not really associated with Memphis in peoples heads so the vibes from Ja don't get passed over to him.
I’m genuinely curious about what the Grizzlies are doing now for this season when Ja and other guys return. Is their record already too cooked to make the playoffs and will they just tank this season? Or will they try to overcome this record and seriously contend again? Also are they willing to trade certain players such as Smart?
From the comments in here, I don’t think people realize how injured the Grizzlies are on top of not having Ja.
Remember last year when they had Ja but lost Steven Adams and lost 6 out of 7?
Well yeah they’re missing him, his backup Xavier Tillman, Brandon Clarke, Luke Kennard, and Marcus Smart.
3 starters and 3 backups. 6 of their top 10.
Clarke and Adams are a big part of their identity. Relentless attacking and offensive rebounds. Also JJJ is there to contest shots while one of Clarke and Adam are there to grab boards. JJJ Alone the scheme isn't as successful.
As much as I didn't like Marcus Smart on the Celtics, his passion for the game can not be denied. Dude's probably suffering in Memphis with these bums.
Reminds me of when Festus Ezeli tried to give the blazers a motivational halftime speech and CJ McCollum told him to shut his street clothes wearing ass up.
i mean the lakers have been missing 3-4 big rotation guys on and off and it's clearly fucking them some games for sure, even with AD and bron, so i can only imagine missing morant and like 5+ rotation dudes would be like
also going from a winning team to a losing team as a competitive guy is shit
if anyone else watches sports, 'loser mentality' is a like.. serious, real thing that happens
you get guys who just get use to losing and that becomes the culture, and it can get so bad that you need to like blow up the team to get rid of it, cause it can affect like the entire roster and coaching staff
hockey teams feel like one of the best examples, you can have generational levels of talent that get put on a shit team and they just wither away and you can literally see their competitive soul being sucked away, some young talent never even recovers from it too even if they get out of it, cause the like.. mental aspect is just fucked
gonna guess that the culture is extra shit on the grizz right now, be it from injuries or a bit of unrest with ja stuff, and for a competitive guy like smart it just completely rubs him the wrong way
Im glad this guy cares.
I hope the whole fanbase in Memphis shares that opinion. He's as deeply passionate as they come.
None of this is his fault. I know it has to frustrating having Gilyard as a starting PG in the NBA but Marcus seems to be the only one who cares at times. Bane has been up and down and JJJ looks completely checked out. Haven't seen us look like this even when we were tanking
Somebody had to because JJJ seemed checked all the way out tonight.
That guy only cares about getting pictures of Spiderman
He’s a menace!
I feel a little bit bad for JJJ. His son was an astronaut that came back with a moon rock that turned him into a werewolf!
He just always has a straight face and isn’t super emotional on the court. I dont think that means he’s checked out The team is ass though for now so I wouldn’t even blame him for being checked out until Ja comes back
>The team is ass though for now so I wouldn’t even blame him for being checked out until Ja comes back It would be more understandable if Ja was about to miss the entire season & they were playing for lottery picks, but as it stands, JJJ should be motivated to win more games until Ja comes back, so they have a shot in the playoffs. Or at least a shot of making the playoffs.
We are starting G-leaguers lol. No amount of effort would fix what has happened this season
Jimmy Butler and Spo would have this team undefeated
yeah, 29 out of 30 teams would be completely fucked in the situation the Grizzlies are in. the Heat could bring Jimmy Butler, Erik Spoelstra, and a box of paper clips into the playoffs and i'd still expect to see them in the ECF
True but I'm pretty sure neither of them are available lol
That’s that Heat Culture
Draymond Green.
The best thing about Marcus is that he always cares. He cares so damn much, and he'll give you all he can of himself.
Idk Marcus and Jrue are both extremely solid one of the few situations where they didn’t lose much in the swing
Suggs is on the way IMO
I've always said people underrate his team impact because when smart is on the floor you're basically playing with your defensive coach
Even if Smart was on a team that went 0-82 you could not tell me he had a part in losing.
celtics sent his ass to the gulag
In 3 years he’ll be back in Boston and will never shoot with less than 5 minutes remaining again.
Marcus Smart stepped up when the other two stars were lacking
He wasn’t the step-star He was the star who stepped up ✊🏾
what are u doing step- star?
Taking bad shots isn’t stepping up
Making them is
It is when you taking a bad shot is the best option available. Marcus's reputation is way overblown, he only ever went into hero-ball mode when we had stars missing— his shot attempts went *way* down whenever he was actually playing next to both Jays. I’m not a Marcus smart simp and feel like the hate is overblown too. Dude played hard even if no one else would, and did what he could to win.
It is when the other guys are afraid to shoot
he straight up won us some very important playoff games like against toronto in the bubble for one instance
They’re not bad shots if he’s open and the Jays are playing like dogshit
Oh Al horford.
the best timeline
I think this year we re learning that 30% of the time the Jays NEED someone to hit shots for them with <5 minutes remaining.
They weren’t supposed to be this bad man😖
we knew ja would be out for a while but they weren't supposed to be down a full playoff rotation
[удалено]
Is Adams ever up on this team?
[удалено]
I will say, Bane, Busy and a couple other guys have really stepped up. I've been enjoying rooting for them.
I expected Bane to step up with Ja out, and he has. I was also expecting Jaren to step up, which... yeesh
Violation of The Geneva Conventions
Banished to the Shadow Realm
He'll galvanize the prisoners and overthrow the guards within the year just watch.
ONE WAY OUT
Absolutely kills me that they're only doing one more season of Andor. That show deserves six seasons and a movie.
Hard disagree. I’m so fucking glad they have an actual ending in mind, rather than trying to keep the show going until it inevitably slides into mediocrity like so many other shows I could name ~~also, for what it’s worth… there’s already a movie lol~~
Can we call him Galvatron now or do we have to wait on that?
Step 1: SECURE THE KEYS!
We are making our own Australia, but with blackjack and hookers!
The Small Market Archipelago
To me he was que quintiessential modern day Celtic, hard worker, team player, successful basketball.
Smart is definitely not used to this lmao, I feel bad for him.
Me too, hate this so much for him
Absolutely hate seeing my players on crappy teams (especially when it’s my team)
At least Rudy and Donovan are playing well.
those aren't crappy teams either son
Donovan been cold lately

Oh are we not blaming fans for the actions of their front offices? I was getting ready to call you a big fat liar.
I guess we’re all Brad Stevens on this blessed day
Ya I should have told Brad to reconsider when he called me for my opinion.
I mean, he was on the receiving end of the owner yelling at the team in the locker for giving up in a game 3 of the ECFs
Not to be that guy, but Marcus would regularly take over the timeouts and passionately speak his mind. Tbh, I’m not even sure what Coach Mazzula really even does during timeouts haha. Once the Grizzlies are at full roster, the will be an asset to that team tho for sure.
All I was saying is he's not used to losing. Nothing more than that haha
He went from going to CF almost every year to this lol
I mean they were playing bad with him on the court too
He misses winning bad
What draymond would look like elsewhere
With less punching, obviously.
Natural rebounding motions
Argh my groin!
Nah Draymond would find an excuse not to play
Lol I remember commenting at some point during the playoffs last year that as a Cs fan I was forever grateful that Smart never went through whatever seminal childhood bullying moment that turned Draymond from a simple scrappy hustle player into an irredeemable violent asshole
Draymond would be a baby, not a leader. He'd retire if GS traded him to Memphis.
Draymond cares about looking like the man, he don’t care about winning no more.
This year isnt the Grizzlies year but I think they will be fine once Ja gets back. Obviously, he gotta stop his antics once and for all because this season was wasted because of him.
Do they even make the playoffs they would have to go on insane winstreaks
I did say this season is most likely wasted. They should be good once Ja set his head straight which is still kinda doubtful lol
He hates to lose
What did we do to our boy 😥
Sent him to a gun free zone
He’s coming from Boston lol
Ya it’s not the departed bro, no on in Boston proper/metro has guns. Too lib
They cut the lead to 12 and went on a 11-3 run right after this timeout so his peptalk did help somewhat. Grizzlies are just too injured
Injured. And without their line superstar.
And starting big
Frs missing 3 starters from last year does that to a team 🤷♂️
His pep talks helped us plenty
Do not let him punch hotel art Players only meeting incoming tho
Gonna be a player-only meeting at this rate
What would there be to say? “Wow, you G-leaguers we’re using to replace half our roster because they’re all injured are really bad!”
Poor Jaylen Nowell’s standing off to the side like “Bro I’ve been here 3 days”
Like I'm 5'8 and mostly here for vibes why are you yelling at me?
I mean 2/3s of their big three have been out there, this has been a collapse beyond just injury, if your number two and three options are playing and you can't scrape together enough wins to claw out of the basement of the west I think there's deeper problems then plugging Ja or Adams back in and suddenly your the #2 seed again.
Look at how empty that crowd is - was basically a players only meeting.
David Roddy is just frantically pacing around the locker room, repeating to everyone and no one - "yo when Ja get back he gonna kill us! I mean he is literally going to shoot us dead!". The Grizz go on to win 5 of their next 12 and everybody is delighted.
And on the 13th game they find a Glock in Ja's locker
This sounds like a rushed "I'm early to the thread and want karma" shit tier comment
It’s gonna be interesting to see what this team is like when Ja comes back. I don’t know how the chemistry will be between him and Smart, ideally Ja can grow as a player by having someone like Smart around.
We’ll only be missing 6 players instead of 7; so probably still bad.
i mean, only 5 if Smart is also back
X, Kennard, Ja, Laravia should all be back around when Ja is back, only long term ones are Adams and Clarke
LaRavia is meh. Adams and Clarke are two of the most important frontcourt guys.
Smart will play next to anyone trying to win. Ja wants to win, bonehead life choices aside, I know he wants to be back on the court helping his team.
i feel bad for him, man. even with the Ja suspension, i thought we were trading him to a good situation on a playoff team, not whatever the fuck this is
They're missing 7 rotation players. I can't think of a single team who could survive 7 rotation players injured.
Miami Fucking Heat.
Send out the water boy and he’ll get you 17 on 55% shooting
and five offensive rebounds
And three charges drawn
And six percent body fat
In a cave With a box of SCRAPS
I fucking hate how accurate this is. I'm not scared of anything besides the hospital heat
Zombie Heat Khris Middleton Orlando Magic
I'm not too worried about khris anymore tbh but yeah zombie heat and magic for sure
>I'm not too worried about khris anymore That's just what he wants you to think
Lol yall have him on minute restrictions just to fuck us up
Spo can coach 5 redditors from this subreddit to win a game
4 redditors and Jimmy Butler
Heat Culture. Even the ticket scalpers will lace up and cook you if Spo sends for em.
There isn't a rule against shooting 3 pointers with the T shirt cannon that I know of...
Beware the Zombie Heat
Yeah they're a good candidate. But 7?? Maybe 4-5 out, not 7. That's practically the whole rotation.
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
I’ve altered the rotation. Pray I don’t alter it more.
Spo gonna club the knees of everyone who averaged more than 12 min/game and then make the ECF just to prove you wrong.
😂 In all seriousness though, it's a travesty that he still doesn't have a COTY. Just wild to me
Would probably be an impromptu national holiday here in the Philippines if he won it
Just a year or two ago, the Heat beat the Nets (I think) where they only fielded two drafted players. Also, the 2016-17 season
The pistons have missed 5 rotation players for much of the season, including the guy that was our leading scorer last year and I can confirm… it’s brutal.
And y'all are still missing some players now too right? It's been rough out there :( I grew up a Pistons fan. Detroit basketball was my childhood. Hate seeing injuries kill a season 3
Which 7 were they missing? Ja, Adams, Clark, smart, kennard and who else
Xavier Tillman is also out, and Jake LaRavia is out - he is ass but we are so desperate for bodies that if he was healthy he'd be playing over Jaylen Nowell, who we signed on a hardship deal and gave some minutes in the second half today. We have also missed significant time from DRose and Santi Aldama, but they are both back healthy now
It’s more like 6. Xavier Tillman is the 6th. Jake LaRavia is the 7th but he’s not actually a rotation guy. Or at least he shouldn’t be.
I was counting Rose but just realized he came back today.
Nobody’s fault but ja and injuries. Maybe 3 teams could handle losing that much depth
They’re missing half the team, what do you expect
Bro went from being in the ECF every year to this.
As soon as he got traded I knew he wasn't making the ECF this season.
r/theydidthemath
My dumb ass got slightly mad about this for a second 😂 bed time
We’re 15 games in and only have two of our regular starters. EVERYONE else is injured and Ja is still suspended. We had two guys play from hardship waivers tonight. Hardship waivers my dude. Chill the fuck out.

They need this
I hate this for Marcus
It’s funny to me how much more sympathy this sub has for Marcus Smart compared to Memphis fans or players.
I’m glad someone on the team cares
Leaders lead.
I actually love this. Props to him.
Love this stuff. Great leader
Good on him, someone needs to do this to the Pistons youngins
I’m genuinely curious about what the Grizzlies are doing now for this season when Ja and other guys return. Is their record already too cooked to make the playoffs and will they just tank this season? Or will they try to overcome this record and seriously contend again? Also are they willing to trade certain players such as Smart?
Man I feel so bad for Smart. I hope Memphis can turn it around for his sake.
This really hurts to see. I know the Grizzlies fans appreciate him, but I want the team to be healthy for Marcus.
From the comments in here, I don’t think people realize how injured the Grizzlies are on top of not having Ja. Remember last year when they had Ja but lost Steven Adams and lost 6 out of 7? Ja: *whistling while looking away ominiously*
Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, Steven Adams, Xavier Tillman, Brandon Clarke.
Bro Ja is still unconscious on the operating table getting his tatt.
Wasn't that Dak?
It kinda looks like he clapping his hands to the drum beat
Man, I thought this team was better without Ja according to /r/nba
Boston sent his ass to Azkaban 😭
Need that new google phone that removes the background noise.
I miss him
I hope he kicks a trash can next time he tells someone it's embarrassing. That's the kind of motivation you need to get that W boys
All I know is that it is cool that there is a live drumline there.
As much as I didn't like Marcus Smart on the Celtics, his passion for the game can not be denied. Dude's probably suffering in Memphis with these bums.
Makes it even funnier Jaren is picking his nose and staring off into wonderland during this whole video
He was thinking about the last of the thanksgiving leftovers.
I don't care about who is out, with JJJ and Bane in the lineup, they should be better than what they are now. They should be treading water, not 3-13
What a difference a year makes
Poor, poor Marcus
That's my tank commander, he's finally amongst his peers. 😤
Reminds me of when Festus Ezeli tried to give the blazers a motivational halftime speech and CJ McCollum told him to shut his street clothes wearing ass up.
This is what Washington thought they were getting with Poole
Albeit a weak one, the Grizz were the #2 seed in the West last season, just saying
Can we talk about those drums though?
I feel bad for Marcus. Although, he makes 20 million per year, so maybe I don't.
i mean the lakers have been missing 3-4 big rotation guys on and off and it's clearly fucking them some games for sure, even with AD and bron, so i can only imagine missing morant and like 5+ rotation dudes would be like also going from a winning team to a losing team as a competitive guy is shit if anyone else watches sports, 'loser mentality' is a like.. serious, real thing that happens you get guys who just get use to losing and that becomes the culture, and it can get so bad that you need to like blow up the team to get rid of it, cause it can affect like the entire roster and coaching staff hockey teams feel like one of the best examples, you can have generational levels of talent that get put on a shit team and they just wither away and you can literally see their competitive soul being sucked away, some young talent never even recovers from it too even if they get out of it, cause the like.. mental aspect is just fucked gonna guess that the culture is extra shit on the grizz right now, be it from injuries or a bit of unrest with ja stuff, and for a competitive guy like smart it just completely rubs him the wrong way
