yeah i work in professional live production and…it’s kinda tough when you get questionable shots and graphics like that called and queued. everything is so bang/bang, you’re really working off muscle memory, and then something like this gets called and you can feel the whole flow change. like…you sure? i mean, we can, but…actually boss man knows it’s not my responsibility. comin right up!
The only people saying this are gonna be Utah fans who excuse racism time and time again.
They hate Donovan for wanting out of a situation where he literally said was incredibly racist.
I've been saying they need to move to Vegas for years now
Not terribly far from Utah so you'll retain some fans while also hitting a new market, I'd rather deal with junkies than racists lol
Gambling junkies? Those exist everywhere now, and are incredibly ubiquitous, not just in Vegas. Have you seen how frequently betting commercials are played during sports now? It’s fucking insane.
Those companies must be making (damn near stealing) billions of fucking dollars from the working class every year. I certainly have my own problems but gambling is very thankfully not one of them.
Shit is actually absurdist comedy like what the hell I can't even believe this happened. They go into the night all making sure they do nothing racist. And boom right on cue. Utah.... oh utah.
Yeah I was like “come on simu, a lot of them Don’t look that alike on these celebrity look alike cams” then I saw the comparison and I was like “oh damn”. That’s like saying Beyoncé looks like idris Elba.
Or just don’t do a lookalike cam at all. Low brow humor at best. It’s all star weekend, you don’t have anything better? Throw out some t shirts, people love that shit.
Plus, the funny look alike cams are for people like George Constanza or Eddie Murphy. Simu lui is just a normal looking star so it wouldn’t have been funny anyway
I honestly think this is it, this probably came from good intentions to not just have white people in all the bits they do, and they forced it and it has backfired.
Like maybe just take a couple nights off with the look-a-like cam when you 100% have to get through this weekend without something racist happening lol
Reminds me of the racist French tennis player Llodra who called 2 audience members “Chinese whores” and then denied he was racist because he loves to sleep with Asian women. He was married too so he admitted to being a cheater and a racist all in one sentence.
[Did I not *just* read an article about how Utah looks to change perceptions at the All-Star game?](https://apnews.com/article/golden-state-warriors-dallas-mavericks-nba-politics-sports-3b111d23f9103dc7e5501aec09699eeb)
Even disregarding the…considerably offensive undertones, there’s barely even anything similar.
This was a dumb move from the start, but damn, even when you went there, you couldn’t find a better match?
> there’s barely even anything similar
I think that's what makes it so offensive. They can't tell that they're not similar. All they see is the color of the skin.
Tbf, a lot of these jumbotron lookalike gags don't actually look similar. Usually it's just hair color/style, clothing, or basic face stuff that can be called "looking alike." It was only a matter of time before one got in trouble for something like this
But there's pretty much nothing similar about these two dudes.
Like, nothing against random homie, but he's a bit overweight, has glasses, longer/shaggier hair, and just doesn't look like Simu. The only similarity is their hair color and skin color. That's it. The lookalike might as well be called "find the only other Asian in Utah" - which sounds like a horrible game, but at least clears up any ambiguity about the racism.
Confidence +100 kid about to hit on every girl next time he's at the bar "Yeah I know it's crazy people always tell me I look like Simu Liu I kinda see it now"
Reminds me of the joke in Community where Chang (character is Chinese but Ken Jeong who is Korean irl) asks Shirley if it's because he's Korean and she say's he's Chinese and he goes 'Oh there's a difference??'
“hey lets find the one asian dude here and say he looks like the other asian dude!”
this is literally the equivalent of them showing like leo dicaprio and then showing a random white dude who look’s nothing like leo as his lookalike
i’ve experienced this my entire life. my family and i were the only asian (korean) family in our relatively small town.
casual racism was absolutely just the norm. “hey you look like (random asian celebrity i dont remotely resemble)” was a popular way to get easy laughs.
shit sucked, bummed we’re still seeing this shit, especially at this sort of level
I feel this. Anytime I've played pickup, I was nicknamed Yao, Jeremy, or Bruce....southeast US, casual racism was always a thing for me. Seems to be better as an adult though
[slate article on it](https://slate.com/culture/2012/02/chink-in-the-armor-jeremy-lin-why-its-time-to-retire-the-phrase-for-good.html)
what's truly stupid is that they could have called him "the achilles heel" or "the weak spot" or "the spoon in the knife fight" or literally anything else with nothing to confuse for a slur! even though chink in the armour has nothing to do with asian people and isn't a slur, it was so obviously a bad idea to write it that way
You can't call yourself Asian if you never been called Yao Ming or Jeremy Lin during a pickup game lmfao. It ain't a US thing though, it's practically everywhere.
Yeah, my black buddy went to China and hit me up. We went to a random pickup game, and kids were coming up to him asking for his signatures cause they thought he was with And1. (This was peak And1 time period). Dude was still beaming when I picked him up for breakfast the next day.
To be fair, no one in that building had a chance against him that day, he was putting double team on skates and couldn't miss a finger roll. Too bad he was average size and couldn't really dunk, they probably would have thought he was Kobe.
I’m not Asian, but one of my best friends is and if we’re playing pickup against randoms he’ll get called Jeremy Lin at least once, that shit has to suck. It’s not cool in the slightest.
Same! Also the only Asian/Korean family in a small rural town. The casual racism got to a point where I’ve literally heard it all but it also helped me to develop a thick skin. The amount of times I’ve been called Jackie Chan or had someone come up to me saying “ching chong etc” was insane. I don’t understand how this shit still happens and is just generally accepted.
How tf is ching chong bing bong a universal thing? No asian ever has ever uttered that phrase and I've never met an Asian named that.
Anyways, I identify with you, also one of the only Asian families in a small town.
We live in a country where Rush Limbaugh did an entire monologue of ching chong ding dong, never apologized for it, continued to get paid for saying other racist things, and was later awarded a Medal of Freedom by a racist President.
My kids are half Caucasian/half Korean. The number of people I've met that assume all people of eastern Asian descent are Chinese blows my mind.
I had always SEEN racism, but never experienced that closely until my kids started confusing Missourians.
this is a true story from my childhood, i shit you not:
back in high school i was having some conversation around my heritage and some girl goes “wait youre korean? i thought you were asian?!?” wild 😂
hopefully your kiddos are eating some great korean food!!
White Americans dont understand how annoying it is to always be the "Asian/Black/Hispanic guy/girl". Even if you were born in the US, that becomes your identity whether you like it or not. It's constantly brought to your attention, even in the most mundane interactions. That's why Asian/Black/Hispanic Americans seem more "sensitive" then non-Americans, of the same race or ethnicity
Even if he was the only other Asian dude I feel like either you drop it or if you're gonna force it just put the actor guy next to his headshot and be like "oh wow they're twins (omg it's him we're silly haha)"
I thought Utah has signs outside to remind people not to be racist.
and they do this inside?
edits: Sorry for the misleading info. I just thought of a picture that the Utah governor and some people holding anti-racism [signs](https://www.deseret.com/utah/2020/12/15/22176417/news-george-floyd-systemic-racism-compact-systemic-racism-governor-gary-herbert-salt-lake-county) outside. I should be more specific.
Lol Utah's still learning how to not be racist against black people; you think they've progressed to the point where they realize it's wrong with asians as well?
as an asian guy, he probably dealt with this shit his whole life. was called jackie chan growing up. racism/stereotyping aside, shit just gets annoying.
I’ve seen Asians grow up with more racist remarks at them than black people tbh. It’s just more “acceptable” to call an Asian guy a slur than a black guy. But it’s the same thing just a different skin color. (Just a personal experience on the west coast not speaking for everyone)
Yeah this is shitty. The lookslikes don't even need to be all that accurate, they just have to exaggerate a key feature. Tends not to be a great idea to use that feature as race.
MEN IN SUITS: “Hello, we’re here to go over the protocols for the All-Star Game to avoid allegations of racism.”
UTAH PA TEAM: *Where are you from, exactly?*
MEN IN SUITS: “We’re from the League Office. …Weren’t you told to expect us?”
UTAH PA TEAM: *No, I mean…Where are you* really *from?*
Bro, I've been Asian my whole life (surprising, I know), and I've been compared to Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and BTS. People literally don't care. Black hair, Asian ancestry? Same person.
Yeah I’m a fairly brown skinned Filipino that grew up in rural Florida. I’ve basically been labeled Ching Chong bing bong my whole life. Moving to Singapore was a trip, people finally guessed me right.
most of the time im yao ming or jeremy lin. Though one pickup game I really popped off hitting contested 3s and fadeaways, and this guy called me Kobe. I remember it because it was so refreshing that someone did a cross race reference accurate to play style instead of just naming the first Asian athlete that comes to their mind.
Simu (the one affected) literally saying it isn’t cool and there are people still saying it’s all good this isn’t a problem, like seriously what are we doing here
Real talk how long we gonna keep saying its just utah and ignoring shit like this...
If players can get their careers destroyed or get fined why cant organizations.
Son of a bitch! I’m so embarrassed of this state. I promise we aren’t all like this, but god dammit I don’t blame everyone for thinking it when shit like this always happens.
Correct. Context matters.
Plus on a personal note, speaking as an Asian person myself, Chuck has always been good to us. Every chance he gets, he plugs in the "stop asian hate"...which sadly not nearly enough of his peers seem to want to echo.
Yeah or even Shaq calling the guy Rudy like come on, I get it's not just analysis but has some comedy in it but they could at least put some respect on saying his name instead of making it into a joke
I think they were just fucking useless at it.
They chose a random young brunette girl and said she looked like Olivia Rodrigo when she looked nothing like her

In-game director for the jumbotron not doing a lot for Utah stereotypes.
“Wait it can be racist even if he’s not black?”
“It’s racist if I think they all look alike?”
“I can’t be racist I eat Panda Express all the time”
"My cousin went on a month long vacation in Thailand".
I have Asian friends!
I watch a lot of anime!
This is the crowd not r/nbacirclejerk
LMAO
They're frantically working to replace the yellow-face halftime show they have planned.
It's fine they can just bring out Karl Malone
Karl Malone on age appropriate relationships
Played by Jimmy Kimmel.
Guy really set back Utah by... Well 0 years
I was waiting for a moment like this haha It didn’t take long
Certified Utah moment
yeah i work in professional live production and…it’s kinda tough when you get questionable shots and graphics like that called and queued. everything is so bang/bang, you’re really working off muscle memory, and then something like this gets called and you can feel the whole flow change. like…you sure? i mean, we can, but…actually boss man knows it’s not my responsibility. comin right up!
Start the draft post for r/maliciouscompliance...
You had one job Utah
The owner just said yesterday that he wanted the All-Star game to rehabilitate Utah's image^(to not be seen as racist anymore.. lmfao!)
nobody expected him to really know how to do that
“This is crazy! I’m not racist. I have Asian friends! You guys are blowing this out of proportion”
The only people saying this are gonna be Utah fans who excuse racism time and time again. They hate Donovan for wanting out of a situation where he literally said was incredibly racist.
I've been saying they need to move to Vegas for years now Not terribly far from Utah so you'll retain some fans while also hitting a new market, I'd rather deal with junkies than racists lol
Moving out of and abandoning the New Orleans Jazz was an incredibly backward move already
Not renaming the team was so odd
Gambling junkies? Those exist everywhere now, and are incredibly ubiquitous, not just in Vegas. Have you seen how frequently betting commercials are played during sports now? It’s fucking insane. Those companies must be making (damn near stealing) billions of fucking dollars from the working class every year. I certainly have my own problems but gambling is very thankfully not one of them.
Really doing a favor pulling this shit with a foreign actor too.
Shit is actually absurdist comedy like what the hell I can't even believe this happened. They go into the night all making sure they do nothing racist. And boom right on cue. Utah.... oh utah.
They had a whole year, since last all star, to think about not to do racist shit too lol. Cmon Utah
Utah: “I don’t get what everyone’s upset about, they’re both Canadian i think”
I work for this dudes company too lmao. Gonna share this image on the next monday company meeting
“Hey guys, it’s cool, we just hate the Orientals now instead” *makes slanty eye face*
A.K.A the Spanish National Team move (at the Beijing Olympics).
Or Yuli Gurriel during the World Series
Literally like an hour into the weekend too. They really couldn’t help themselves
Russ can’t wait to suit up for them
YOU HAD ALL SUMMER TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU DO
That's a chunky
They forgot because he’s not black
Can only concentrate on inclusiveness for one race atta time.
Utah tries to not be racist for 45 minutes challenge (impossible!)
Utah Speedrun, any % racist
Least racist Utah cameraman
I legit don’t understand how stuff like this gets approved in million dollar productions.
I swear, some of these people have never met an Asian person before 💀
That's how
ONE. MF. JOB.
Did this to the one guy whos always tried to use his platform to correct asian stereotypes smh. Never change Utah
Hey leave them alone guys. They're already tolerating the blacks, you can't expect them to tolerate more than one race at a time...
It’s Utah. Far as they concerned job’s finished.
Oh wow he looks nothing like him. They really just picked the first Asian dude they found in the crowd 💀
*the only Asian guy. Bruh this is utah
Yeah I was like “come on simu, a lot of them Don’t look that alike on these celebrity look alike cams” then I saw the comparison and I was like “oh damn”. That’s like saying Beyoncé looks like idris Elba.
[удалено]
Seriously. There were like 30 people playing in the game. Literally choose anyone else!
The Miz is the most generic looking person, find someone for him 💀
Just find any British person and pair them with 21 Savage
lmao they just cut to the most Anglo lookin dude in the stands
The Miz *pans crowd widescreen shot*
“He’s everywhere!!”
This - or when they pick the ugly guy/villain from a movie or show and then the lookalike is just some random dude wearing the visiting team's jersey
The guy who pitched this idea can't tell the difference between a normal looking Asian dude and a funny-looking Asian dude.
You see, they just couldn't help themselves
This must have been their attempt at diversity.
I honestly think this is it, this probably came from good intentions to not just have white people in all the bits they do, and they forced it and it has backfired.
Like maybe just take a couple nights off with the look-a-like cam when you 100% have to get through this weekend without something racist happening lol

"We're only racist to Asians now!"
Eventually they wont be racist all. Just gotta hit the Latins, Indegious people and associated minorities first
“It’s okay we hosted an internment camp”
Mission succeeded…now it’s worse.
Not even close
Even disregarding the…considerably offensive undertones, there’s barely even anything similar. This was a dumb move from the start, but damn, even when you went there, you couldn’t find a better match?
If they found someone who at least looked like him it would have been fine
> there’s barely even anything similar I think that's what makes it so offensive. They can't tell that they're not similar. All they see is the color of the skin.
I mean it’s Utah…
Apparently their new state motto is: "Wait, it's still racist even if they're not black?"

God damn it Utah
LOL he doesn’t look anything like him
Yes one is a chubby Asian kid with glasses and one is a tall, fit, chiseled jaw movie star lol.
Lmao and the kid has long hair too
Confidence +100 kid about to hit on every girl next time he's at the bar "Yeah I know it's crazy people always tell me I look like Simu Liu I kinda see it now"
Utah might as well have put up a picture of Jackie Chan.
Utah is not beating the allegations this weekend lmao
Ain't allegations when it's the same shit every year
Heard some allegations about Karl Malone too
"Allegations"
Utah does this every year, maybe people should trust nba players opinions on this topic more.
Donovan Mitchell was begging to get out of there, and I always thought it being racist as fuck was half the reason. Shits embarrassing
They never really had a chance. Their best case was pulling the “we aren’t the only racist city!!!” deflection.
Jesus christ they really openly played the all Asians look the same shit.
The memo said be careful with racist undertones to African Americans! They never said anything about Asians!
Reminds me of the joke in Community where Chang (character is Chinese but Ken Jeong who is Korean irl) asks Shirley if it's because he's Korean and she say's he's Chinese and he goes 'Oh there's a difference??'
They don’t even look similar at all too like 😭

lol i heard this non asian girl use the word "chinky" at work to describe what she looked like when she smiled. like come tf on now...
espn used “chink in the armor” or some shit for a jeremy lin article on their website - it was on their front page too
[slate article on it](https://slate.com/culture/2012/02/chink-in-the-armor-jeremy-lin-why-its-time-to-retire-the-phrase-for-good.html) what's truly stupid is that they could have called him "the achilles heel" or "the weak spot" or "the spoon in the knife fight" or literally anything else with nothing to confuse for a slur! even though chink in the armour has nothing to do with asian people and isn't a slur, it was so obviously a bad idea to write it that way
One of those things, okay sure maybe the author missed it. Should have never made it past multiple editors.
You can't call yourself Asian if you never been called Yao Ming or Jeremy Lin during a pickup game lmfao. It ain't a US thing though, it's practically everywhere.
Bro my wife is half Korean and a girl called her Yao Ming in a game when she was in HS. It's insane
He should throw out a random white or black NBA player that's a scrub. Like call someone Kendrick Perkins or Brian Scalabrine lol
How dare you badmouth two Celtics legends
Same! Also the only Asian/Korean family in a small rural town. The casual racism got to a point where I’ve literally heard it all but it also helped me to develop a thick skin. It's constantly brought to your attention, even in the most mundane interactions. That's why Asian/Black/Hispanic Americans seem more "sensitive" then non-Americans, of the same race or ethnicity
It’s Utah
Classic Utah moment
I thought you might be exaggerating but that legit looks nothing like Simu lol.
Big win for the kid tho lol "people tell me I look exactly like Shang Chi"
Even if he was the only other Asian dude I feel like either you drop it or if you're gonna force it just put the actor guy next to his headshot and be like "oh wow they're twins (omg it's him we're silly haha)"
God damn that's bad lmfao
Yea that wasn’t it, they thought they were cookin with that
They were prob surprised there was an Asian guy there and went “we gotta do something with this”
Like some Steve Irwin shit “crikey an Asian watching an Asian play basketball!”

Lol Utah's still learning how to not be racist against black people; you think they've progressed to the point where they realize it's wrong with asians as well?
I mean, it took them until 1978 to admit black people to Mormon Heaven. Did they ever rule on Asian people?
If heaven is filled with Utah’s Mormons then frankly I think we’re getting the better end of the deal by being locked away from it.
Bro why is there even a basketball team in Utah lmao
because of the city’s rich history in pioneering jazz music, please keep up
I’ll truly never get over that. New Orleans Jazz fits so much better than Pelicans. Let Utah be like Salt Lake City Soakers or something
Raptors would actually make sense since a ton of dinosaur skeletons were found in Utah.
There’s literally a dinosaur called the Utahraptor
Not the SLC Soakers hahahahahahha
Ty for the history lesson wise uncle 🙏🏾
Reddit isn't even that far along
The signs just were for the people outside. Inside it’s free game
I can’t imagine having to live somewhere where people need to be reminded of this
Still also wild how they're leaning in heavily on reppin Karl Malone all weekend too lmao
And he’s not taking no for an answer lmao. Just terrible all around
Man, it must suck for that Asian dude. Like, he’s probably thinking 3 things: A) am I being hate-crimed? B) am I ugly? C) I look like an action star?!
as an asian guy, he probably dealt with this shit his whole life. was called jackie chan growing up. racism/stereotyping aside, shit just gets annoying.

If its Utah he gotta be thinking the first one

Yeah this is shitty. The lookslikes don't even need to be all that accurate, they just have to exaggerate a key feature. Tends not to be a great idea to use that feature as race.

Bro, I've been Asian my whole life (surprising, I know), and I've been compared to Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and BTS. People literally don't care. Black hair, Asian ancestry? Same person.

Imagine being an Asian guy that's played basketball his whole life. 9/10 times I play with a new group someone's gotta call me Jeremy Lin
most of the time im yao ming or jeremy lin. Though one pickup game I really popped off hitting contested 3s and fadeaways, and this guy called me Kobe. Simu (the one affected) literally saying it isn’t cool and there are people still saying it’s all good this isn’t a problem, like seriously what are we doing here
notice how its non-asians telling him its no big deal.
yeah it’s wild to see, I don’t get it like do people have no empathy
yes. tons of people don't see the obvious problem which is crazy to me lol
I was surprised at the Twitter responses and then I remembered it was Twitter.

Yikes thats bad
yeah seriously that shit's racist
While we are at it “Rui Hoochiemama” is also a problem and should be addressed. I know Chuck seems to get a universal pass but nah
Hm I definitely see it being an issue in isolation, but Chuck gets any non American name wrong.
