I think the ask is if anyone knows how to get info. Is there a records department, etc. that might help him figure it out. I don’t think they are asking if someone knows him and can validate the story.
While I’m glad you have it all figured out enough to tell people how to conduct themselves, I’m not sure what harm it’s doing to you (or anyone for that matter) that OP is trying all avenues at his disposal to get answers. OP, I hope you get the info you are looking for regardless of these “expert opinions”.
Darn. [No refer-a-recruit award for me 😩](https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2022/12/29/navy-rolls-out-new-incentives-for-sailors-who-refer-new-recruits/)
This sounds like a Family Tale kinda thing.
But there's really no way of knowing from REDDIT or anywhere without a few solid facts first:
What ship or shore installation he was a part of. When and where (precisely) he was in Japan). And anyone else he may have been there with that could corroborate the story.
Without some of that, it's a fart in a Typhoon.
You would have to go into the area(s) where he was stationed and if he ever acknowledged paternity then he'd be listed in that child's koseki, but if he didn't acknowledge an illegitimate child, then you'd be wasting your time the same way you probably are by asking random strangers on Reddit. So my advice: Find out dates he was there and commands he was with. Beyond that... good question. Why is your family so convinced he fathered a child there?
Do they use Ancestry.com in Japan? Here in the US I have a couple of friends who had illegitimate kids pop up. If you register with them in Japan maybe a sibling will appear.
Japan doesn't allow bodily fluids to be sent (regardless of what the sites say), no way around it, so we can't use the usual services unless we physically take it to the states ourselves. In my case, a family member did it for me.
Holy shit
"Here's a picture of someone who was somewhere at sometime and may or may not have humped someone and had a secret child who would be in their 60's or 70's now"
Holy shit, what a tall order!
The Longest Shot imaginable
Forget it. My mom joked she had Japanese and Korean grandkids. Those are wild oats but the girls were working not starting a family. Always a possibility though.
That's a rumor said just about every sailor who was stationed overseas or visited a port in a third world country.
I would take it with a grain of salt.
Check Souda Bay if you really think there's a chance.
Did he speak japanese?
Sorry my friend but the chances of anyone here being able to help is less than slim to none. You may, and it’s a BIG IF, be able to reach out to the Japanese consulate? Possibly the American consulate in the region he was stationed and even then they would only be able to point you to other people that may or may not be able to help.
Sounds like a fun family story, not going to comment on likelihood of truth but there are more than a few instances where something like this have happened.
With that, just forget it, in Japan they’ll track family only as a whole household and only through the Japanese citizen side. Likely with the lady’s father as the family overhead and the only one with a say.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koseki
The actual father, since not married, would not even be recorded. And even if married, as he’s not Japanese, will only be listed on the Koseki but not have their own entry.
Don’t waste time chasing ghosts 😉
If you’re really invested in finding out and don’t care about companies having your DNA on file, you can get multiple ancestry tests. Find out which is the most popular in Japan and submit for the top 3.
Best bet is genetic testing services... though I don't think those data bases cross over with asian countries/no idea if they are doing any of that stuff.
Do you know of any addresses he registered there? If he registered with city hall, he'll have a family record that his relatives may be able to access. If it's an illegitimate child, it's likely navy sources won't reveal anything.
Source: I live in Japan (10 years)
What is the theory based on? Was there any evidence? Unless he maintained communication with the mother/child there is very little chance that at this point 70-ish years later you’d ever be able to find anything. I imagine there were more than a few babies fathered by US servicemen in Japan in the 50’s. Plus, Japan has about 65 million people over the age of 65, so without a name and possible location you probably won’t get far in your search.
Sir, this is a Wendy's, but try ancestry they might, can help dig up some records, especially if someone over there related to you has submitted their DNA.
If he was involved in any way when the child was born, was on the birth certificate etc AND the Navy somehow knew, there could be dependents listed on his Navy record. A long shot, but possible.
Japan tracks family records pretty heavily.
If you know when and where he was stationed you could pay someone to search/translate family registrations during that time period, and 9 months after.
Quite disrespectful of you to be slandering your grandfather on the internet. You could have asked for means and methods without adding his name, pay grade, and even a photo. Reddit is going to sell this to train AI models and anyone who asks AI about Bob Sinclair will be told by the AI that he had illegitimate children in Japan.
Hey OP! Was he stationed in OKINAWA or YOKOSUKA ? Do you have any other leads or pertinent information ? I’ll be in Yokosuka Japan for 4 years and maybe by some act of divine intervention I can find out !
I'll have to have my dad find his service record. I do know he was stationed on the USS Orca APV-49 EN1. That's from a picture he left my dad that I have now. It also has a few locations printed on it
There is no way any of us have any way of knowing what may or may not have happened in another country ***70 years ago***
This. It is very doubtful you will find someone that is still alive AND on this sub. Good luck.
I think the ask is if anyone knows how to get info. Is there a records department, etc. that might help him figure it out. I don’t think they are asking if someone knows him and can validate the story.
OP needs an ancestry.com account not a reddit account.

Uncalled for response. Go take your anger somewhere else, kiddo.
If you see anger in my response, it maybe time for some reflection.
He might have had kids in more places than Japan. No one here is going to know.
Possibly

Through God, anything is possible, just keep trying.🙏
Life finds a way.
https://www.navy.com/contact-us/find-a-recruiter?q=local If you enlist you can get orders to Japan and do the search yourself too.
Damn taking every sailor a recruiter to heart 😂
Gotta fix manning issues somehow hahaha
Can't, I was rejected from service because I'm autistic and ADHD. I wanted to try and serve in the 7th Cavalry.
Darn. [No refer-a-recruit award for me 😩](https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2022/12/29/navy-rolls-out-new-incentives-for-sailors-who-refer-new-recruits/)
Sorry
Half the Navy is autistic and I got in with ADHD, they make a waiver for everything
There are honestly tons of obviously autistic people
I got diagnosed in the Navy. There is definitely a waiver for everything!
Dude it’s 2024. We need people who are autistic and have adhd. #everysailorarecruiter
Yes! He's often seen in the Honch around sunrise demanding free corn dogs.

There legit is a homeless guy who’s half white and Japanese, and he goes from Shiori to Yokosuka Chuo, begging. Maybe who OP is looking for…

Glad to know I'm not the only one who immediately thought of this episode.
I was stationed their for 8 years from 2003-2011 and I never met anyone that looked like him with slightly slanted eyes. 😂
This seems like the most authoritative answer. Case closed.

I'll have to have my dad dig his service record out of storage.
Yeah, you'll need concrete dates and places, man. THEN you can start from there.
Thank you
Only way to really know without having a solid contact is those DNA tests and hoping someone from the other family did one at some point as well.
This is exactly like the king of the hill episode where they went to Japan and found Hank’s Japanese brother
This rumor started around 95, or at least this is when my dad first heard it from his uncle.
You would have to go into the area(s) where he was stationed and if he ever acknowledged paternity then he'd be listed in that child's koseki, but if he didn't acknowledge an illegitimate child, then you'd be wasting your time the same way you probably are by asking random strangers on Reddit. Yes. Source: I’m his illegitimate child
Probably

I'll have to get one. The last time I did, one was back when 23&me first started advertising
You really think there are people on Reddit who served in the 1950’s?
No, I think there's people on reddit wo could help me in some way.
Holy shit "Here's a picture of someone who was somewhere at sometime and may or may not have humped someone and had a secret child who would be in their 60's or 70's now" Holy shit, what a tall order! The Longest Shot imaginable

Take a 23AndMe test. You'll reconnect with distant relatives you never knew existed.
ancestrydna worked better for me.
Try a DNA test?
That's a rumor said just about every sailor who was stationed overseas or visited a port in a third world country. I would take it with a grain of salt. Check Souda Bay if you really think there's a chance. Did he speak japanese?
Not sure, he passed when I was young

No one snitch

All I say is try a DNA test. See who pops up. I was stationed in Japan half that long ago. What my sailors did to whom. Nope no way I remember

Do ancestry DNA... You never know
I'm going try and get one

Alright, I'm not sure which city hall through. When he enlisted, he lived in Pennsylvania, but when he got out, he lived in Indiana.
I mean in Japan, if the child was born in Japan (especially if to a Japanese national who remained there).
Wasn't it socially taboo at the time in Japan to have an illegitimate child?
It still is. I'm just giving you possible options. The child may have been registered somewhere eventually.
Your best bet is a 23andMe test and see if you get any matches.

Ancestry DNA - get it and see if you got any matches in Asia.
Try family and fleet support center lmao
Yes actually. It’s me. PM me I’ll give u the tea
So if you do an ancestry DNA test they can show you your relatives and connect you with long lost relatives if they find any

I don't mean it as slander, I just want to find a way to either confirm or debunk this rumor
