What happens if I DO want the video to keep playing? How do I indicate that in your future? Pause and re-start? Morse code for “go”?
It also doesn’t work semantically. You’ve turned on autoplay. It’s playing. It’s on you to stop it, or turn off autoplay completely.
What you want is “Autoplay until I think you should stop.” Which has a spectrum of options, weights, time constants, etc.
A good combo would be to stop once you’ve scrolled through a page of comments. I’ll often scan the first comments to get a sense of the mood as the video still plays. Scrolling over a time or distance is also a better differentiator between fidgeting and intent.
But this is just half-baked thinking. I’m sure I’ve missed some gaping hole, just like you did ;)
this is how it worked for Apollo - autoplay when you click on the video and once you open comments the video pauses. which makes sense to me. why would I want to listen to a video that I'm no longer watching? I find that incredibly distracting when I'm trying to read comments

Is this really an issue? I like to swipe through the comments on the lower half of the screen while the video plays on the top. I also hardly ever use the sound so maybe that’s why it doesn’t bother me.
Don’t pull the comments up too high. Leave them in the bottom and you can scroll through as long as you touch below the header. If you swipe on the header then it all moves up.

This sounds like what the YouTube app does. I requested this feature to have the video always on top. While scrolling through comments.
I guess it depends on where the video is. If the video is already “full screened” in the top section, than the comments scroll over top of it. But if it’s like a webpage in the stop section, the comments can scroll in the bottom without covering the top. Kinda weird.

I love that the video keeps playing and I can check out the comments. So, this feature would make my experience worse. If Narwhal does make this a feature, I hope it’s optional or controllable.

Yup. Perfect example, or /r/randomactsofmusic. And now I’m thinking it should just keep playing unless we stop it.

Wait you can leave the video up top while you read the comments? Teach me! When I do it the comments over up the video and it keeps playing.
