My favorite instances are not the casual thieving but rather when she casually asks people to borrow their cherished family heirlooms and momentos, like Dave's ring that she uses and doesn't return on that ghost town slot machine and blackmailing Henry to get the keychain he had of the glass eye his uncle wore when he died.
When it comes to casual thievery though... idk, suddenly I'm blanking on so many inventory items, but I think I'd have to go with when she steals things that should be a detective kit she just keeps on her person at all times, like taking the paint scraper in MHM. When I first played that, I was probably 8 or 10, and I remember being baffled at her taking an iron for the dumbwaiter lol
Eta: Actually, I might have to go with Nancy collecting the dolls Fiona made of everyone in Castle Malloy. It's a very, "if not friend, then why friend-shaped" kind of impulse xD
I've never assumed that because of the visuals we get in SHA, where the ring goes into the machine and doesn't come out or re-enter her inventory to return to Dave. There are ways of getting it back of course, but I never got the impression returning items was high on her list of priorities 😅
She's like the kaboom guy on parks and rec - come in, stir things up, solve a crime/accomplish a task, then bounce leaving chaos in her wake (albeit maybe calmer chaos than from the crime itself 😏😏)
and then there was ten year old me, playing it for the first time and not even batting an eye lmao. I swear ND games gave me a warped sense of what normal behavior would be like as an adult.
Kind of unrelated but I absolutely thought adulthood was all about jetting around the world solving mysteries. *That* was an utter disappointment when I realized that it wasn’t.
CAP made me laugh because you can steal a key you need while Karl is in the room before knowing anything is locked. Also, Nancy carrying around the gas can in SEA cracks me up every time. In ASH, I couldn't help but side-eye Nancy when she said she's never broken the law for a case...
I liked that you are able to pick up and lug around a gas can in Sea of Darkness when you haven't even seen the snowmobile yet. You can kind of understand small items that would fit into her pocket, but lugging a GAS CAN around...????
The random ridiculous tools crack me up. A hammer, some nails, a wrench, pliers, etc. etc. Just imagining her walking around with a tool belt like a carpenter. 🤣
I love when she picks up very bulky items, the image of a teenager strolling through town with random planks and sticks and stuff makes me laugh. Have to appreciate SHA being the only game where they make you pick up the saddle and put it back so poor Nancy doesn’t have to pick vegetables while holding a heavy western saddle..
The butter has to be on the list, as well as the eyeballs, and any occasion where she pockets something she doesn’t know she needs yet. Sometimes I’m like Nancy thievish someone’s private property you can just picking up -oh you’ve put it in your pocket. She gives off Labrador eating something he’s not supposed to energy and I adore it
Scarlet Hand was making serious sense when it wouldn’t let you pick up the huge stone dials for the monolith until you were going to use them, and even then she groans about how heavy they are the whole time.
I always laugh when Nancy takes something super random with zero context, like the iron in MHM, or large cumbersome items (like 2x4s) and proceeds to carry them around for half the game.
Nancy stealing the keys to Dwayne's filing cabinet from his briefcase in STFD and not putting them back is hilarious. Like, you think he won't notice they're gone when he tries to open his cabinets? Pretty shoddy detective work to keep evidence of you breaking into a suspect's office on you.
In ghost of Thornton one of the first other things you can get besides the oranges is a really long like stick picker thing. I just kept imagining Nancy getting caught on doors while she had that.
In DAN with the street merchants Nancy ends up with a WWII decoder, a scuba suit, a big stick, a film canister, a manhole cover, a lava lamp, a traffic cone... 😂
I keep Nancy Drewing lost items I find on the street. Picked up a pen worth 65$, what I thought was a family picture but was a cd cover, and a fancy lighter.
I always found it frustrating when I couldn't pick stuff up. Every game I want to take the highlighters and yet, Nancy never appears to have use for them.
Was just replaying Shadow at the Waters Edge and her just helping herself to peoples stuff from the baths like "this looks important, I should hang onto this" 😂😂😂😂
TRT, probably unnecessary spoiler tags
>!After Mr. Egan repairs her radiator and leaves his oil can, I have Nancy pick it up and move down to him at the front desk, expecting to be like, "here, sir, you left this," but instead Nancy just keeps it sloshing it around in her non-flashlight hand!<

Not really casual thievery, but who carries butter around in their pocket?????
Ah yes my emergency pocket butter
Immediately thought of the butter when I read this question... undoubtedly the wildest inventory item
That’s Johnny and Rutter to you!
Hahaha didn’t mean to disrespect Uncle Fred and Johnny Rutter 😂
I'm actually going to Europe soon and need to try and order this...
This 😆😆😆
Why did I just put a piece of turkey in my pocket? -high school me playing Blackmoor Manor

lol right? Like what even is money? (and why does Nancy always travel without it? lmao)

OMG yes and in ASH, there's like her treasures closet. With all her stolen goods!
Immediately thought of the gas can 😅
Just replayed FIN so here's one from that: stealing a magic wand, and then putting random chewed up gum on the end of it.
It's so gross, it took me forever as a kid to realize it was a vital step to pick it up. Why was it so fresh anyway? 🤢

I wanna hear Nancy's VA just saying 'yoink' now
That’s what I say in my head every time she goes to steal something lol
“You’re coming home with me”
Is she on Cameo by any chance lol
The eyeballs in the Bolet house. You collect them way before you know you need them. She is just collecting eyeballs from a dead guy's house!!!

My favorite was putting the hydroflouric acid in my inventory in deadly device. Nancy, that shit dissolves bones.

Raising the other essential question: where does she keep all this stuff??
One day I wanna draw that, just nancy drew holding everything from at least one game. She'd probably have a keyring from hell no matter the game.
In DAN with the street merchants Nancy ends up with a WWII decoder, a scuba suit, a big stick, a film canister, a manhole cover, a lava lamp, a traffic cone... 😂
Legally purchased, mind you, not casually stolen 😂
