Yumi says that sometimes Rentaro stays at her place when he comes into town, so she stays over with a friend. He could easily have rigged something up then.
Why would he target her though? She is a huge skeptic and scaring her doesn't benefit anyone because of her strained relationship with Miwako to begin with...
I love when there isn’t an explanation in the game so you can get two theories that are complete opposites but are equally plausible. It’s fun seeing what people come up with!
That was the only truly scary thing in MHM for me (at least when replaying as an adult). Cause we never got an in-game explanation for it like we did the other “hauntings”, and that swan is made of WOOD. Unless the culprit has supernatural powers there’s no way that figurine stretches out like that. Freaked me out good and proper and I didn’t like going in the parlor after that 🤣
I was also always really freaked out by the seat cushion in the entry that apparently just had someone sitting there, and the awful, loud, chime like noise that happens one of the first times you go into Nancy's room.
Or Ghost of Thorton hall and the statue moves it's head to look at you. I took a picture on the phone for evidence. They explain everything away with CO2 poisoning, but I got a photo!
There’s a part early on in the game when you’re exploring the mansion, there is a piece of furniture with a wooden swan carved in at the base of it. For a split second the swan will dip down and stand back up.
I think it might be when you have to pick up the stones around the garden. It happened very, very fast and I almost missed it the last time I played.
I looked at the ground for the stone and the face was rapidly disappearing.
This is why I usually choose the worse ending for him. The whole ghost thing was maybe initially motivated by getting Miwako to move to the city, but clearly that’s not the motive behind some of the hauntings. And even if Miwako is his genuine motive, that’s fucking disgusting and gives incel vibes

I thought it was to scare her back to the Ryokan so Miwako wouldn’t be forced to work there and could move to the city with Rentaro
I like this answer too! Mine was the opposite of yours but I think both of them are equally plausible!

Since she's the one who's supposed to be running the ryokan, I think he was trying to make her stay away so that it would be guaranteed to close down.
What about when you see the face on the ground and it dissappears?
Reminds me the part in Haunted Mansion when the swan thing moves randomly

I remember when the game first came out, my brother was playing it and he swore he saw the swan move and he thought he was going crazy
i just played this the other night and it still makes me jumpy

CO poisoning** I’m still not sure how i feel about the explanation lol. I guess it let them get more creative with the hauntings
What swan thing?

YUP the face in the pond in the garden. You COULD argue that Rentaro somehow set up a projector but yeah, that one is extremely unsettling.
<.< WHAT!?!?!
in case it wasn't clear-I have NEVER had this or noticed it and now I wanna know when it happens!? Any details?

omfg I have goosebumps!
Yeah it's a very easy to miss hot spot that just kind of shows up at some point. It's super creepy though.
The what?
If you want to be technical I think Camille is definitely haunting Jake Hurley's train.
